I'm sat in traffic on a hot day (28*C) using my streak as a satnav and just had a message to say battery stopped charging due to overheating. I checked the status and it was at 59.8*C. I immediately turned it off and took it apart, putting the parts over AC.
My question now is, have I broked it?
Back on at the moment and sat at 39.9*C...

I don't think so friend. It protected itself and quit charging. Is it working now?
It is working fine now, I'm just worried I've damaged it by allowing it to get to that temperature.
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
The entire point of having such a feature in the Streak is to prevent damage to the battery, not to mention prevent damage to you from a exploding battery.
You've done no harm to the Streak and no harm to the battery.
I shall take your word for it.
Even though it did get extremely hot to the touch I imagine it takes a higher level of heat to do any damage..

I had an iPhone and it would overheat and shutdown regularly. Never had any long term damage or problems... Well other then it being an iPhone.

While it is ok to compare, I'd rather compare one streak to another, who knows if there are more delicate parts susceptible to overheating in the dell than another?
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
I've started seeing a lot more total device crashes of late. I can't help but think it's temperature related and GPS is the main culprit. I have it in the car with an official Dell holder. Even with AC on, the sun on the holder doesn't seem to help, but I can't help but feel the design restricts airflow and cooling.
Normal operating temp seems to be around 91f. Running GPS takes it to over 95f. This is going to be a problem since ambient temperature here in NY is often in the high 90s during the summer. It crashes without GPS running too when hot, but I'm sure the GPS chip generates a lot of heat and exacerbates the problem.
Set cpu is restricted to a max 1GHz. Running DJ's 1.9.0.

I was having that problem idk get stuck at the dell logo alot...I called dell and got a warrenty exchange...if your in a year of buying it I'd suggest it...got my streak in 3 days its a refurbished model but he'll it looks good and and works...when mine was overheating I had to use a 20 dollar samsung phone cause mine got so bad...once it overheating its all downhill from there
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Mine has only done so once while in traffic on one of the warmest days of the year so far. Since then it has not gone above 34*C. I've moved the streak car holder to a position over a vent which blows cool air directly onto it should I get another day like this.
Hopefully it wont happen again, but should it do so I will get on the blower to Dell.

Hey folks,
I had my X10 a few days ago and since then I've been fairly happy with it's performance apart from the power consumption issues we're all experiencing. Anyhow.. recently, after powering down due to running outta juice; I've notice there's loads of speckally bits under the glass. I'm wondering is this normal? Or is my handset defective?
Thats not normal, unless you have opened it, or dropped it
Not done either!
Think ud be calling for a replacement.

Anyone notice on the section that has the speaker and light sensor front camera etc joins the screen is not flush? First one had a problem I returned it saying I had wif-fi problems as thought they would not take back over that..Now i got a different one and on one side the top section is lower than screen on other side higher so can feel edge of screen..surely its not just me with two streaks that turned out like this!
Just "felt" up my streak and can confirm that the left is a lil bit off level
Ps I have us beta.version
I have one from dell unlocked and my left sticks up a bit so its either a design fault or ment to be like that
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I have a direct dell unlocked and it too sticks up a little. If I press it down it sticks back so its the same level as the screen. But after an hour its unstuck itself and raised up. Not by much probably 2mm but def noticeable.
Not sure if I should send it back due to build quality.
Yeah, now that you mention it. Mine does that to, got mine direct from O2, never noticed it before, I can press it down, but eventually pops up again.

Can't see any noticeable gap on mine or any dead pixels which would be worse
Mind you the tin can battery cover is a joke.
I dropped it when changing the sim and the paint chipped off a bit
Mine's an o2 one.....seems to be level for me....
Mines slightly raised on the left side at the top.
Not enough for me to care about though.
I think we should get replacements for units that are built well! These are the Bentleys of the phone world and build quality should be nothing but perfect!
Yep, mines raised too. Demo unit in the o2 store was too.

Got mine 2 weeks ago. Screen wasnt flush. The speaker stopped working couldnt hear calls. O2 swapped it for a new one and the screen on this one is perfectly flush

The question to all Streak users - since the device is quite big, how do you make calls/answer the incoming calls? Do you feel uncomfortable using the device? Please, vote in the poll as well.
I hold it to my head, yeah I said it. I do get wierd stares though. At least the screen turns off when your ear touches. Long conversations I always use ear piece though.
It actually does not feel bad holding it as a phone. And since the Streak is so large, the mic for the mouth piece is very close to my mouth.

People laugh at me until I pull it feom my ear and they see how awesome the screen is etc. Then it ecomes eye candy. I had it 2 weeks ago at an ATT store and omeone asked how I was talking on a PSP. Then I showed them what it qas and they just loved it. Almost everyone in the store hax to play with it lol.

Yeah, that's really funny!!! When my colleague (he is very slim guy) saw my Streak for the first time he also compared it with PSP then took my phone and rashed to the mirror holding it at his ears. I said that he looks ugly - this phone is not intended for slim guys with small heads...
I almost always use a bluetooth headset to talk on my streak.
I just started using mine today. It doesn't feel as weird as I thought it would holding it to my face.

Does not bother me one bit i am very proud i have it
For long teleconferences I always use a headset no matter what the phone.
For short social calls I use the Streak directly.
I think the "people staring" thing is a myth, it's just me being awkwardly self-conscious and propagating the myth.
I do think it would be tough to market the Streak as a phone though because of the built-in prejudices everyone has that things must be smaller/thinner/faster etc. But it will struggle as a tablet because iPad pretty much is the baseline.
So Dell have an opportunity to define their own category and be the first in it. I hope they're smart enough not to kill the Streak but to stick at it and own the category.

was going to reply to the OP query with "my mouth" but I'm feeling less sardonic than usual..
my mate was playing with my streak the other day and said "what you really hold it up to your ear?" then he gave it back to me and when I held it up to my ear he said "ok so it looks like a normal sized phone when you hold it"
I guess it helps if you can wrap your hand around it so that I can quite comfortably over touch forefinger to thumb in portrait mode...
the Streak isn't big.. all the other phones are abnormally small
I also just hold it to my ear and take calls. The only annoying part is not the size but my ear browsing the internet or playing with my home screens. It seems better with 2.1
It is an excellent phone. Even better now I use adw launcher instead of of the Dell screens

I use my Dell streak directly. it's perfectly fine. The only people that tend to snicker are IPhone users. this is easily solved. I often say say "let's compare phones... Mine can do more useful stuff than your Iphone.." whan asked "like what?"..... I remove the battery and put my spare in. Obviosly, they cant do that and go away sulking...

I use the Streak as a phone by holding the thing up to my head. I don't give a $#!+ what anyone thinks when they see me using it this way. Middle age and a happy marriage do have their advantages (wait, I used to have of those... maybe I'm on a winning streak now).

Well, thanks for everything!
On saturday, i received my 4th LCD from hong kong in the mail, and on sunday i replaced the broken one on my phone. I dropped the streak with my 3rd screen from my lap and onto the carpet floor, so the LCD broke (not the glass).
This time, tuesday morning, i dropped my streak about 10-20 cm onto my laptop - and well, the brand new LCD broke.
Seriously, I'm tired of replacing that LCD, so now i'm quitting!
Anyone else with experiences like this? Is there something fishy about these hong kong LCDs? I've never broken the glass in front of the LCD, but i've always broken the LCD itself...
I can't keep my Streak out of its Otterbox for more than a few minutes. It's a delicate device, I'm not sure why people would hold it and think otherwise.
Not my experience at all that the Streak is a delicate device. It's taken all the abuse of hundreds of pocket removals, an occasional in-pocket bump on railings and after a year of heavy use still looks nicer than my old HTC Touch Cruise. I have also dropped my Streak unprotected - running to catch a train in Japan from a too short pocket to the hard concrete. Didn't see any damage right away and thought wow! It survived. Alas a few days later I noticed there was a hairline crack in one corner of the glass which I could definitely live with. Now I have one of those thermoplastic resin covers on and have accidentally thrown it down on my bathroom tile floor where it did a good bounce and a cartwheel or three - not a scratch anywhere. Awesomely well built is my verdict.

mishandled mine numerous times, but nothing like that.
My LCD broke while the phone was in my pocket about 3 weeks ago. Called Dell, they replaced. 2 days ago the EXACT SAME THING happened with the "new" (re: refurbished) phone that Dell sent. I just called Dell and now they are out of stock and the guy said call back after September 21 and we'll help you and hung up on me. I'm very upset with Dell now. IF I can get another replacement, I will promptly trade/sell it for something else.
Ha, I am on my sixth screen. Last time I broke mine I purchased two replacments. Put one in and a few days later I noticed the spare was broken. Heck it was never even out of the box.
At 35$ US for a screen I will just keep replacing it.
I do have a defender on it after the last screen broke. Had the commuter.

Just in case Dell can't/won't replace, where do you get your screens @ $35.00?
I've had almost exactly the same experience, dropped my original screen a fair few times and the most I got was a small chip out of the glass. So I've been through two replacements already, one dropped from my lap onto carpet the same as 'olemartinorg' and the lcd broke and the other half a metre onto stairs and broke the same way. I'm beginning to wonder if the quality of the LCDs from China are any good or the same as the official Streak.

I wouldn't say i've mishandled my streak, it's just extremely brittle. I had a nokia one that where i had to replace the screen two times - but the case i have with the streak now is just outrageous.
I ordered a LG Optimus One yesterday - i'll miss the screen size and speed, but it will probably not break every other day..
I had about enough with this phone also I'm just praying that the POS lasts me till the galaxy note comes out... I can't stand how this resets, in my pocket I almost missed my son being born cuz of this trash was not working right my wife had to call 3 other people get the word that my phone that was in my pocket was stuck on the dell logo, then the battery was drained so it was pointless... that was the straw that ended my love for it... again I can't wait for the note to come out I'm getting far far away from crap dell and will NEVER BUY FROM THEM AGAIN

I ordered a screen from Hong Kong on the 18th August after I dropped it on a concrete floor and the LCD leaked. The rest of the screen died a few days later. I haven't received my screen yet and am stuck with a tiny Galaxy Ace at only 3.8 inches...
I've dropped my streak loads of times, hard floors, soft floors, from waist height, head height. It has broken 3 times - first time the LCD broke and Dell repaired it for nowt, the second time the glass shattered and i made an insurance claim.
I think its just pure luck that it hasn't broken more. They are bloody fragile, but i think that it just down to Dell's design.

Sorry, first order, first served basis
I think people should know about this, including that Sony do not cover it at all in warranty, nor do insurers.
I left my phone on the dashboard of the work van for around 4 hours whilst out on site. It was a baking hot day and I never considered the heat to be a concern.
Come back 4 hours later to find a crack, yes a crack, in the top right corner of my screen. It certainly wasn't there before I left the van, I changed the screen protector on the drive down, as I was in the passenger seat before anyone says something
The crack is roughly two inches long and has affected the panel beneath the screen, push on the crack and the screen goes all funky.
Having spoken to various shops and Sony themselves. They all agree it's the heat. It was only about 25° Celsius, scorching for the UK, so for you in the hot countries, heed this... DON'T leave the phone exposed to direct sunlight. Sony don't give a rats ass if the screen breaks.

Ride it like you downhill it.
I doubt they would honor the warranty because it's not factory damage. The obvious is that you left it in an extreme condition. Many electronic devices have advise that do not leave them under direct sunlight. Especially, Z is black which absorbs a lot of heat when compare to other colors.

I've had CDs warp when left on the dash in direct sunlight.
I know it was only 25°C outside, but consider that the windscreen will magnify the sun's rays and the heat is also trapped in what is basically an enclosed metal shed.

Yeah, I got unlucky on this, It didn't seem warm due to the wind but silly me didn't think of that.
In my country, the Nederlands, there is a instance which helps customers get in contact with companies like Sony. It's called the 'Consumentenbond'. They wrote and article about these cracks and asked everyone with a crack to contact them. Sony gave a reaction and should now be working on the issues people claimed.
I definitely think Sony does actually care.
My Z is to repair for a loose back panel now, but I also contacted this instance about this. Sony would get in contact with me in a few days to solve the problems and complains.

There has been some days here in portugal that got over 45C and just leaving the phone for 10minutes on the passenger seat would make the glass extremely hot, it's like a sun-magnet. I reckon that 10 more minutes and something realy realy bad would happen like a glass crack.
Other than accidently placing the phone in the car on a hot day, I am more worried that the phone overheats itself when I'm using it to play games. What more living in a country that's has tropical weather all year long

All I know is that I have left it for 5+ hours in the car under direct sunlight in mid summer (40°C in Greece) several times while GPS, bluetooth, 4G was on and Google maps was running, the battery reached 58°C and my phone is still alive! No cracks, no melt downs, no back cover unglued etc.
25 degrees is not what your dashboard's temperature is. You should be aware that the dashboard is on a whole other level of freaking hotness under the sun. I don't think any company would honor warranty for cooked gear.

Leaving your phone in the car on its dashboard, on a hot day has nothing to do with warranty or any faults of the manufacturer! This is his own fault not sony's..
