Well, thanks for everything!
On saturday, i received my 4th LCD from hong kong in the mail, and on sunday i replaced the broken one on my phone. I dropped the streak with my 3rd screen from my lap and onto the carpet floor, so the LCD broke (not the glass).
This time, tuesday morning, i dropped my streak about 10-20 cm onto my laptop - and well, the brand new LCD broke.
Seriously, I'm tired of replacing that LCD, so now i'm quitting!
Anyone else with experiences like this? Is there something fishy about these hong kong LCDs? I've never broken the glass in front of the LCD, but i've always broken the LCD itself...
I can't keep my Streak out of its Otterbox for more than a few minutes. It's a delicate device, I'm not sure why people would hold it and think otherwise.
Not my experience at all that the Streak is a delicate device. It's taken all the abuse of hundreds of pocket removals, an occasional in-pocket bump on railings and after a year of heavy use still looks nicer than my old HTC Touch Cruise. I have also dropped my Streak unprotected - running to catch a train in Japan from a too short pocket to the hard concrete. Didn't see any damage right away and thought wow! It survived. Alas a few days later I noticed there was a hairline crack in one corner of the glass which I could definitely live with. Now I have one of those thermoplastic resin covers on and have accidentally thrown it down on my bathroom tile floor where it did a good bounce and a cartwheel or three - not a scratch anywhere. Awesomely well built is my verdict.

mishandled mine numerous times, but nothing like that.
My LCD broke while the phone was in my pocket about 3 weeks ago. Called Dell, they replaced. 2 days ago the EXACT SAME THING happened with the "new" (re: refurbished) phone that Dell sent. I just called Dell and now they are out of stock and the guy said call back after September 21 and we'll help you and hung up on me. I'm very upset with Dell now. IF I can get another replacement, I will promptly trade/sell it for something else.
Ha, I am on my sixth screen. Last time I broke mine I purchased two replacments. Put one in and a few days later I noticed the spare was broken. Heck it was never even out of the box.
At 35$ US for a screen I will just keep replacing it.
I do have a defender on it after the last screen broke. Had the commuter.

Just in case Dell can't/won't replace, where do you get your screens @ $35.00?
I've had almost exactly the same experience, dropped my original screen a fair few times and the most I got was a small chip out of the glass. So I've been through two replacements already, one dropped from my lap onto carpet the same as 'olemartinorg' and the lcd broke and the other half a metre onto stairs and broke the same way. I'm beginning to wonder if the quality of the LCDs from China are any good or the same as the official Streak.

I wouldn't say i've mishandled my streak, it's just extremely brittle. I had a nokia one that where i had to replace the screen two times - but the case i have with the streak now is just outrageous.
I ordered a LG Optimus One yesterday - i'll miss the screen size and speed, but it will probably not break every other day..
I had about enough with this phone also I'm just praying that the POS lasts me till the galaxy note comes out... I can't stand how this resets, in my pocket I almost missed my son being born cuz of this trash was not working right my wife had to call 3 other people get the word that my phone that was in my pocket was stuck on the dell logo, then the battery was drained so it was pointless... that was the straw that ended my love for it... again I can't wait for the note to come out I'm getting far far away from crap dell and will NEVER BUY FROM THEM AGAIN

I ordered a screen from Hong Kong on the 18th August after I dropped it on a concrete floor and the LCD leaked. The rest of the screen died a few days later. I haven't received my screen yet and am stuck with a tiny Galaxy Ace at only 3.8 inches...
I've dropped my streak loads of times, hard floors, soft floors, from waist height, head height. It has broken 3 times - first time the LCD broke and Dell repaired it for nowt, the second time the glass shattered and i made an insurance claim.
I think its just pure luck that it hasn't broken more. They are bloody fragile, but i think that it just down to Dell's design.

So,
Just for fun I thought I would share my story, of how I broke my first evo. I set my evo on the bumper of my car. Rearranged something in the the bed, and forgot my evo on the bumper. 20 minuets later I'm driving and looking for my phone. Well to make a long story short, the evo stayed on my bumper until I hit a speed bump in the parking lot of my apt. I drive all the way back home, and see it right next to the speed bump face down, screen shattered. The good news I have a tough case, and even though it was run over by a car, it still works! I would love to hear any other stories about evo destruction!
Dang. That's crazy that it still works even after being ran over, ha-ha.
I've only just dropped like crazy onto concrete, floors, etc, and it only has one tiny little crack by the search button and some dings.

Personally I'm pretty impressed with the durability of the phone. Extreme damage no phone can withstand, but I dropped it before out of the case and it holds up well to some of the older phones that I have dropped.
I dropped it by accident face first straight flat fall ON the face on my hardwood floor and not one single thing was damaged.
Edit: it was about a 4 foot drop.

They are so strict on that, they wont do it, why sell you one for 200 when they can get 500 from you. I'm surprised they didn't tell you about insurance, it's a huge money maker for them. They want you to have insurance. It sucks losing a phone

I'm on number 2. First one had the speaker stop working and the kickstand spring broke so the kick stand would flip in and it would fall over all of the time. I wasn't about to be responsible for it falling over and flying off the table so it was replaced.
This second one has been like two weeks and the kickstand spring is on the way to dying again. The kickstand squeaks - it slowly gets worse till the spring gives out. I'm sure the speaker will stop working on this one too.
With the luck I had with the first Touch Pro (12 of them in 10 months) I'm sure I'll be seeing the same crap here. I'm gentle to them, they just all fail terribly. I'm beginning to wonder why I bought another HTC phone after the Touch Pro and TP2 were so bad.
Asurion said 5-7 days for my replacement, and I got an email today saying it's been shipped and I'll have it tomorrow. Amazing...... What can I expect, a refurb piece of crap?
EVO #2 here, First one was fine except it had a cracked camera lens, Then i put it in my back pocket, almost sat down in the car and realized it was there. Pulled it out LCD was broken , Glass intact.
Second EVO - Perfect except for crack on power button. Not replacing it for that. And hopefully its my last one.

On my second one, it should arrive today. The assurion backorder thing is a joke. They said it would take 3-5 days, that was yesterday when i sent them the info. And fedex overnight is so damn fast. They must have a driver dedicated just to me.
In all honesty, the first one i got a big scratch on the glass, so i decided to buff it out with a whole bunch of different grits of sand paper and polish. Well i did a good job (i have done auto paint multiple times, it isn't much different) but the scratch was so deep i would have had to remove way too much glass to make it go away. So i bought a new digitizer off of ebay. Put it on, was very happy about everything and that very day I didn't have my jelly case on it because I had it off to put the new digitizer on and i dropped the SoB on the floor at work and the LCD went out. Digitizer didn't crack or anything though.
I told assurion I lost it in the trash compactor at work so that I could sell the digitizer and other parts to recoup some of the cost of the deductible and new digitizer though.
I will never remove my baby from it's case again.

I take mine just about everywhere but the loo, but my TF is fairly well taken care of other wise. Give or take dogs climbing over the screen and my backpack flying across the car here and there.

GUYS,
PLEASE BEWARE, the Galaxy S3 is no where as sturdy as the S1 which i previously owned or a S2.
Today it just fell off from my pocket and see what happened to the screen :-(
I had dropped my previous S1 a million times in the period of 2 years and not a single scratch
I am going to give it in on warranty, pathetic stuff from samsung
please everyone take care and use a casing.
Yikes
That's annoying. Hope you get it fixed mate.
I wonder if Samsung does that dirty trick of logging out the G sensor to detect whether it's been dropped or not and not accept warranty repairs based on it.
It was all fine after the drop. I used it for about 30 min. Then when i woke up in the morning, the screen was like this
it was a very subtle drop, this is pathetic quality and should be covered under manufacturer defect
Warranty don't cover clumsiness
G-sensor isn't a dirty trick to see if phone is dropped its proof
Sending back for warranty repairs saying you didn't drop it is a dirty trick
If you drop your phone a million times I strongly suggest phone insurance and a otter box case

To be fair, its pretty reasonable to expect that someone would at some point in a two year period drop a device that they will likely be carrying about with them ALL the time and removing it from and replacing it in their pocket frequently.
Just yesterday my s3, having only got it on monday, slid off the arm of my sofa because every surface of it is glassy smooth and bounced off the edge of a wooden table. Luckily it was unscathed but it is not unreasonable to expect a device of this nature to be able to withstand such an accident.
There is a certain amount of luck involved here though because obvioisly even the lightest tap at the right angle and position could shatter a screen.

With today's technology and what it costs is the minimum that can withstand drops of at least 50 cm like my RAZR .........
If im not mistaken it seems as if all the white ones are the ones with the faulty issues... the cracked screens, the exploding phone, dead screen... dont you think that might be the reason they're releasing the white at a later time? to perfect it a lil more...i read something where that they had to redo the pebble blue because of some issues and maybe they're redo'ing the white version...hmmm makes sense....:good:
Unlucky mate, hope it gets fixed. I am fairly certain that my phone is going to get dropped sooner or later, simply because it's so big (even more so in a case) that I can't hold it securely in one hand and operate it properly at the same time.
Tbh I'm going to keep hold of it until the rumoured multiple Nexuses come out later in the year and then maybe sell it on to get something slightly smaller.

no. I think since the pebble blue was delayed due to Samsung's color issue, the bulk of what was immediately available were the white phones. Then when a few units had problems, they happened to be white.
My white one fell out of my hoody jacket as I was running for the bus, I was lucky that it landed on the cement, not the grass or I wouldn't have noticed it. Three corners have massive damage and there paint scraped off, it really did hit the ground hard. But the screen is perfect

I agree that if you drop your phone you only have yourself to blame if it breaks but having said that i also believe a device like this should be able to withstand some drops, they managed it with the S1 & the S2.
My advice would be to get it insured and get a case of any description, something is better than nothing, even if it's only a pouch!

After having this phone for 3 weeks (Today literally made it 3 weeks), the phone took a fall from my computer desk and the "gorilla glass" completely cracked. So now all that is displayed is a single green pixel and a line of about 10 white pixels.
I was really happy with this device up until this point, but a fall like that breaking the screen is unacceptable. Guess it's time to find another new phone.
Must have been a real unlucky hit. Mine has fallen from shopping cart height 3 times without even a scratch. Back went one, battery another...put it all back together and all was good.
I guess I will chalk it up to bad luck and hope for better next time. Just ordered the Epic Touch, so we shall see how that goes (and this time I got a case with it, lol).
I wanted to go back to HTC, but something about these Samsug phones has drawn me in.

Well I ended up losing the Epic 4g Touch auction by like $3, so I went looking for a nice SIII but in the end grabbed up the HTC Evo 4G LTE. Will have it on Wednesday.
I will probably grab up a bad ESN Epic at some point though just so I can have a backup phone (better safe than sorry). I really did like this phone and I figure the SIII would also be amazing, but I could not justify paying almost $200 more for the SIII than the Evo LTE.

And it was perfectly fine. Also with my Moment, I went to put it in my pocket, but I missed and it fell on the asphalt screen first, and the glass cracked. Like what?

If were talking about dropping phones during hurricane sandy. This was at night and the rain was over and the center of the storm was heading towards Philly so I went outside to record the storms force. While standing there a few seconds late a huge gust of wind blew pushed me and knock my phone right out my hand it fell smack down on its face on to the concrete I was like O_O I picked it up no crack in the screen just a dent in the plastic part around the phone. But now I'll never have warranty because somehow now my battery has half pink on it. If I had an iPhone 4S it would of been history for that phone. The epic records good night video by the way.

Just luck of the draw then I guess. I still can't believe that it broke from one tiny drop onto a soft surface, but these things happen. I guess I won't fully write off Samsung, but for now I gotta stick with what I know has worked for me in the past.
Recently my Nexus 4 got scuffed but I'm not sure how. Should I return the phone as it also rattles with minimal shaking and was made in January despite it being bought just around 4 days ago. This is the first phone I've scratched and I am horrified. It wasn't even me who did it, my mother dropped it while I was showing her it but no damage occured . The scuff then happened later for no apparent reason.
I love the phone and hate to lie and send the phone back but I could say it was also down to the rattling I was returning it?
What should I do?
is it ethical.

Get it phone case and kick your brother's behind. LOL. No seriously, get a case or tell your brother to get you a case.
The rattle you hear I hear it on mine as well. I feel like a little baby. Goo goo ga ga
The rattle is normal, its the camera auto focus (or the sim tray). Google wont accept a damaged phone unless you really do the dirty on them and say it came like that.
Seems like everyone with OCD owns this phone.
We have guys shaking phones like a etch a sketch, pressing against the back glass trying to hear cracking sounds, looking at the phone from awkward angles just to see if the the glass is separating from the rubber bezel and now we have a guy ready to commit a crime cause his phone has a scratch.

But I'm not entirely sure how it scratched so easily. I'm mythed how it got there. I've never scratched anything before. Even without Gorilla Glass.
I'm also convinced it could've been the bumper. It rattles even when moving the phone and not shaking it. The scratch has just made me lean towards a replacement more.
Will Google accept a scratched phone with a factory defect?
Yes they would accept it back with a factory defect but they could just repair the defect and send it back to you still scratched as that is not covered

as someone said before, the rattling is normal. every n4 rattles. a scratch won't hurt you and seeing how you caused it i don't think you should send it in. you got this thing for 299 $ which is a steal, they sold 10 pieces of it worldwide because they can't rival samsungs broadway antics - why putting even more weight on their shoulders.
this is why I got a case as soon my Nexus 4 arrived. Lmao! OP is gonna lie for it. Sure why not. Blame the phone companies for making the phone so easily breakable or maybe its the nature fault for the way it works.
Man threads like these why I enjoy coming to xda. It's full of wins!!!

I only bought it around 3/4 days ago. I could request a replacement. There is no way a phone should've scuffed/scratched that easily. I like the phone and don't want to live with scratches. I've seen people return scratched Nexus 4s to shops and they've accepted them. No I'm not going to lie. It's just that the scratch has made me lean towards an RMA.
Never have I scratched a phone.

Didn't you just say in the original post your momma dropped it? So do phones just magically get scuffed?
So how will you go about this RMA? Do they take phones back cause they got scuffed?

Yes she did but the scuff appeared a couple of days after. I still don't know what caused it. I would live with the scratch if it was my fault and was small but I did nothing to scuff/scrape the phone. The scrape is along the right convex edge.

You ever cut yourself and it bleeds a few seconds after?

Trust me the scuff wasn't there. I wasn't happy and inspected the phone in all kinds of light. I also cleaned it plenty of times.
I have just read two other threads today... one from someone who RMA'd a phone with shattered back glass that stopped working, but neglected to mention the broken glass. Another from someone who mistakenly connected a 12v car battery directly to the charging port and fried the charging circuit (among other things) and neglected to tell Google about that as well. I won't cite countless other post I have read from folks exercising similar behavior.
I almost feel sorry for Google... but mainly feel sorry for people who still play by the rules and take responsibility for their own actions as they will most likely pay for the unethical behavior of others via higher pricing and more hoops to jump through to get legitimate issues taken care of in the future.
I agree. I'm sure Google wouldn't take a phone back only because its scuffed. I'm sure the original poster will create some fake reason why he's returning the phone.

I won't. I hate liars as much as everyone else. Personally, I was expecting my mother to pay for it (which didn't go down well )
The volume buttons aren't easy to press and the phone's sim tray (not the lense) rattles with normal use. Another problem is a line on the top left edge on the phone (looks like a plastic mold mark). I do actually have plenty of reason to replace the phone. It's just the scratch has made me lean to a replacement more. Not only that, I received the phone 4/5 days ago and it was made early February; and without plastic nubs.
Do what you gotta do, whatever makes you sleep better at night. I'm not sure how Google handles returns but they could easily consider that as wear and tear deny an RMA.
