[Q] How do you talk? - Streak 5 General

The question to all Streak users - since the device is quite big, how do you make calls/answer the incoming calls? Do you feel uncomfortable using the device? Please, vote in the poll as well.

I hold it to my head, yeah I said it. I do get wierd stares though. At least the screen turns off when your ear touches. Long conversations I always use ear piece though.
It actually does not feel bad holding it as a phone. And since the Streak is so large, the mic for the mouth piece is very close to my mouth.

People laugh at me until I pull it feom my ear and they see how awesome the screen is etc. Then it ecomes eye candy. I had it 2 weeks ago at an ATT store and omeone asked how I was talking on a PSP. Then I showed them what it qas and they just loved it. Almost everyone in the store hax to play with it lol.

Yeah, that's really funny!!! When my colleague (he is very slim guy) saw my Streak for the first time he also compared it with PSP then took my phone and rashed to the mirror holding it at his ears. I said that he looks ugly - this phone is not intended for slim guys with small heads...

I almost always use a bluetooth headset to talk on my streak.

I just started using mine today. It doesn't feel as weird as I thought it would holding it to my face.

Does not bother me one bit i am very proud i have it

For long teleconferences I always use a headset no matter what the phone.
For short social calls I use the Streak directly.
I think the "people staring" thing is a myth, it's just me being awkwardly self-conscious and propagating the myth.
I do think it would be tough to market the Streak as a phone though because of the built-in prejudices everyone has that things must be smaller/thinner/faster etc. But it will struggle as a tablet because iPad pretty much is the baseline.
So Dell have an opportunity to define their own category and be the first in it. I hope they're smart enough not to kill the Streak but to stick at it and own the category.

was going to reply to the OP query with "my mouth" but I'm feeling less sardonic than usual..
my mate was playing with my streak the other day and said "what you really hold it up to your ear?" then he gave it back to me and when I held it up to my ear he said "ok so it looks like a normal sized phone when you hold it"
I guess it helps if you can wrap your hand around it so that I can quite comfortably over touch forefinger to thumb in portrait mode...
the Streak isn't big.. all the other phones are abnormally small

I also just hold it to my ear and take calls. The only annoying part is not the size but my ear browsing the internet or playing with my home screens. It seems better with 2.1
It is an excellent phone. Even better now I use adw launcher instead of of the Dell screens

I use my Dell streak directly. it's perfectly fine. The only people that tend to snicker are IPhone users. this is easily solved. I often say say "let's compare phones... Mine can do more useful stuff than your Iphone.." whan asked "like what?"..... I remove the battery and put my spare in. Obviosly, they cant do that and go away sulking...

But where's the other one?

I use the Streak as a phone by holding the thing up to my head. I don't give a $#!+ what anyone thinks when they see me using it this way. Middle age and a happy marriage do have their advantages (wait, I used to have of those... maybe I'm on a winning streak now).

I hold it up to my ear and make sure they see the Dell logo... then have a look on my face that says, "my phone is better than your phone" look; or "unlike your iPhone, no one else has this **** in Canada" look.

My button has been recessed since I got it, no problems. It might Depend on which version you have, and what screen you actually have.

Ya know, never noticed that it is recessed... but it sure is. Could probably cut myself if I pressed hard enough but have no need to do so.
It shouldn't be pushed in on either screen. Looking at my DINC (only a week old) its perfectly flush with the screen.

Yep I'm in the same boat. Very nice though and no complaints about mine. Only slightly recessed on the inner circle, otherwise just about flush around the edges.
My trackpad is flush with the screen but I did have a refurb that the trackpad stuck out a little bit. For some reason I kind of liked it out a little more.

anyone else think these nubs on android phones are pointless?

I can see where it would be aimed to fit in your hand..but its such a pointless little nub.
On Android phones they tend to have these odd nubs I.e. Droid x, vibrant, Droid incredible.

Any thoughts?

Maybe they contain things that make your phone work.
Presumably, OP is talking about the 'chin' of the G1, and the humps on the back of the DroidX & GalaxyS line....
-bZj
G1 had it first. It was just going for a unique design. The Hero kicked it up a notch and a lot of manufacturers have produced their own take on the "chin".
Just gives the phones a unique shape and personality, instead of just a flat black slab.
i think he's talking about the bumps on the back of the phone.
the only purpose they seem to serve is to show the orientation of the phone, if it's upside down or upright. i find this useful when i'm taking the phone out of my pocket.
i think it helps with gripping the phone so it doesn't slide off your hands like a slab would.
The only thing I do not understand is they do not make the phone have a "feel for right-side-up", making them so symmetrical causes that. The Nub or hump does not really provide the right tactile signal it is upside-down..........
When I first read the title I thought he was saying noobs on android community.

Atleast we don't have the antennagate like iPhone..
Well we do but its not THAT bad.
Cover the nub for a bit and signal goes down lol
I just tore down my Vibrant to do the gps fix. The antenna wire starts at the top and runs down the side and into the area underneath hump or nub you guys are talking about but the biggest thing down on that end of the phone is the vibration motor. You can see all this without taking your phone apart by watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOvt6atrin8
Good find.

I can agree with that. I'm always rotating the phone in my pocket to make sure the "nub" is on top so when I pull it out it's right side up. I'm OCD like that.
Another feature is that it keeps the back from wearing out too much. Phones with flat backs tend to wear a lot. Logos and designs wear to crap.

How to answer streak one handed

Found a "Shake to answer" app, works awsome, you can select the level of shaking, but it allows you to answer the streak with one hand.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
i have no problem sliding the answer thing with my thumb with the same hand holding the device... and i don't have big hands either. i'd say average, maybe a little smaller than average.
I can if I try, But while I'm driving, I tend to not want to take to much focus off driving. So a quick shake to answer makes like easier and safer...
Well, since driving with a cell phone attached to my ear is illegal in my state, I have to pull over to answer a call. Thus, I don't need the app.
Pretty cool though if you have only one hand free and it's holding your phone.

The streak is big and with one hand you need to concentrate on the slider getting it to the very end or you're stuck redoing it a few times and you miss your call.
I downloaded a push to answer app which just turns the slider into 2 buttons making it similar to the iPhone answer/cancel buttons.
I missed a few calls because of the slider so i found a simple solution.
Sounds like a good idea. but thanks to my Bluetooth integrated into my car i can answer the phone with the click of button on my stearing wheel.
Incoming Call Plus (beta) is a free app that replaces the slide to answer function with a tap to answer. I like it a lot better than stock. It also has a feature that lets you reject an incoming call with a text-message reply to the caller. Very handy while sitting in meetings, etc.

4 busted lcd displays - jumping of the streak wagon

Well, thanks for everything!
On saturday, i received my 4th LCD from hong kong in the mail, and on sunday i replaced the broken one on my phone. I dropped the streak with my 3rd screen from my lap and onto the carpet floor, so the LCD broke (not the glass).
This time, tuesday morning, i dropped my streak about 10-20 cm onto my laptop - and well, the brand new LCD broke.
Seriously, I'm tired of replacing that LCD, so now i'm quitting!
Anyone else with experiences like this? Is there something fishy about these hong kong LCDs? I've never broken the glass in front of the LCD, but i've always broken the LCD itself...
I can't keep my Streak out of its Otterbox for more than a few minutes. It's a delicate device, I'm not sure why people would hold it and think otherwise.
Not my experience at all that the Streak is a delicate device. It's taken all the abuse of hundreds of pocket removals, an occasional in-pocket bump on railings and after a year of heavy use still looks nicer than my old HTC Touch Cruise. I have also dropped my Streak unprotected - running to catch a train in Japan from a too short pocket to the hard concrete. Didn't see any damage right away and thought wow! It survived. Alas a few days later I noticed there was a hairline crack in one corner of the glass which I could definitely live with. Now I have one of those thermoplastic resin covers on and have accidentally thrown it down on my bathroom tile floor where it did a good bounce and a cartwheel or three - not a scratch anywhere. Awesomely well built is my verdict.

mishandled mine numerous times, but nothing like that.
My LCD broke while the phone was in my pocket about 3 weeks ago. Called Dell, they replaced. 2 days ago the EXACT SAME THING happened with the "new" (re: refurbished) phone that Dell sent. I just called Dell and now they are out of stock and the guy said call back after September 21 and we'll help you and hung up on me. I'm very upset with Dell now. IF I can get another replacement, I will promptly trade/sell it for something else.
Ha, I am on my sixth screen. Last time I broke mine I purchased two replacments. Put one in and a few days later I noticed the spare was broken. Heck it was never even out of the box.
At 35$ US for a screen I will just keep replacing it.
I do have a defender on it after the last screen broke. Had the commuter.

Just in case Dell can't/won't replace, where do you get your screens @ $35.00?
I've had almost exactly the same experience, dropped my original screen a fair few times and the most I got was a small chip out of the glass. So I've been through two replacements already, one dropped from my lap onto carpet the same as 'olemartinorg' and the lcd broke and the other half a metre onto stairs and broke the same way. I'm beginning to wonder if the quality of the LCDs from China are any good or the same as the official Streak.

I wouldn't say i've mishandled my streak, it's just extremely brittle. I had a nokia one that where i had to replace the screen two times - but the case i have with the streak now is just outrageous.

I had about enough with this phone also I'm just praying that the POS lasts me till the galaxy note comes out... I can't stand how this resets, in my pocket I almost missed my son being born cuz of this trash was not working right my wife had to call 3 other people get the word that my phone that was in my pocket was stuck on the dell logo, then the battery was drained so it was pointless... that was the straw that ended my love for it... again I can't wait for the note to come out I'm getting far far away from crap dell and will NEVER BUY FROM THEM AGAIN

I've dropped my streak loads of times, hard floors, soft floors, from waist height, head height. It has broken 3 times - first time the LCD broke and Dell repaired it for nowt, the second time the glass shattered and i made an insurance claim.
I think its just pure luck that it hasn't broken more. They are bloody fragile, but i think that it just down to Dell's design.

Im sorry that you had a bad device experience with the S4. But I have to tell you, the S4 is far and away from laggy at all. Even in stock form. Several people that I know and many more on this site would tell you differently. I am going to say that either an app that you use caused the lagg, or the phone was a lemon. Heck, I have my S4 packed to the gills with apps and it is under clocked as well. And I get zero lagg.
Now, as far as the iPhone is concerned, I do not blame you in the least for getting rid of it. The company that I work for gave me an iPhone. After using it for a couple of months. I practically ready to smash it. So, I convinced them to purchase me an S4. For now and as far as a phone is concerned, I could not be happier.
Regardles the One seems as though it is a good phone. There are two things stopping me from owning it. This one is a big one. It is not on the Verizon network. And two, it does not have a micro SD card slot.

Not sure what awkward would mean, but the one heats just as any phone does, but the aluminum traps it and absorbs it more than say, plastic. That's not to say the phone itself is overheating, meaning for ex, u have a naturally 1.1ghz phone overclocked to 1.8ghz, that heat you're feeling is it screaming for it's life.
The heat on the one is just due to the fact it's aluminum, nothibg to panic about, I PROMISE YOU.
Why don't you get a case? Because you won't be able to feel it and well, as beautiful as it is, and as the case for all smartphones, drop it and it's gone.
Sent from my HTC One
The One feels hotter because the aluminum body conducts heat much better than plastic does. This is a GOOD thing. It means the phone cools off much faster when things get hot.
The power button is awkward to push but nothing that make me thing of using some crappy iPhone or the S4
