That was one of the featues, that the camera was supposed to be better.
Is this true? Can some people on 2.3.4 post some photos?
My wife thinks the photos are better.

I hope it is. My sis's Inspire, even though it has an 8 mp, still far out-performs my Atrix, above what just three more mp's should get. Even my Torch took better pictures. But, hey, I got a dual core. I can deal with it.
It better!

For those saying its better, can you post some photos taken on 2.3.4??
How much better?
Not sure if the quality is better but the camcorder and camera has an on screen zoom button that works really well.

In 2.2.2 you can zoom with volume buttons, so that isn't anything new. What I noticed in 2.3.4 is that you can move the focus box...so you basically get manual focus!
Looking at pictures is subjective. We need real data to show that pictures are better, if in fact they are. Everyone naturally just expects them to be better cos' they went to 2.3.4 (asian beta), so natural tendency is to "believe" they are better just because.

I've taken many photos with my atrix, and other phones and cameras and I'll be able to tell if colours look any better, as would other people.
The best thing owuld be taking a photo of an object on 2.2 and then on 2.3 and posting both, but I would still like to see the photos from 2.3

Exactly.............you need identical comparisons with both firmwares. That means exact same camera position, lighting, subject, etc. Taking many photos really doesn't mean ****, as does what we perceive as a better or worse photo. I would trust a professional photographers eyes with this, but the rest of us just look for what "we" perceive ourselves to "look" better.

Not really if you are looking for accurate reproduction of colours, etc.
Why would we have any posts about cameras being better otherwise? You either want a camera which takes pictures which are accurate, or you don't need to post that your phone takes crap pictures, cos' nobody gives a crap then.

When two phones are compared and the camera is compared - they take photos of the same thing. By us looking at the comparisons we generally make our own decision about which colours we think look better.
Why are any photos posted in single phone reviews? Yes they comment on colour reproduction and such but ultimately its so people can see how the photos look; not to compare it with a DSLR. I want to see how the photos look.
Apparently the benchmark scores are low but I see most people that are replying with the 2.3.4 just installed say the phone feels faster either way.
Anyways, what point are you trying to make? I want to see photos posted with 2.3.4. There are many topics for other phones where people post photos from their phone, so whats the big deal if I want to see photos from 2.3.4 since its SUPPOSED to be better now?
If somone takes a photo of a red ball at noon in their house with a 100 watt light bult on the ceiling as their only source of light, I think we will be able to tell if the photos look bad or not.
Point is that its not hard to look at a photo and tell if it doesnt look good. Please just leave this thread alone if you're not going to contribute and you're going to just be negative about it.
So far two people have said its better, now I give more of a crap about seeing some photos because of those replies.

My point is that people jump on this "what is better/worse" bandwagon on a beta build which isn't even for the US, (where almost everyone is who is flashing the HTKW 2.3.4), and try to compare before and after.
Everyone expects it to be better, and so you all perceive everything you see as better. If you want to compare, stop saying "pictures look better now" and post real comparisons.
Yeah, sure, I can take 2 pictures with the same phone, (and a 100 watt bulb and red ball), one in the morning, one at night, and with different firmwares. Because the one at night looks better with the newer firmware, does that mean the phone is taking better pictures? No, it doesn't!
I am not being negative, and no I won't leave a thread where what I consider my valuable contribution is asking for proof of pictures being better. I simply want more than people saying pictures "look" better.
If you can't provide some form of proof, and can't/don't want to argue why real comparisons are required, then why don't you leave this thread, as it seems your contribution is nothing more than a 100 watt lightbulb and red ball!

I am also asking for proof, I'm asking for PHOTOS. (see title of topic)
If the Photo looks better, what does it mean? Photos are now worse?...
"Everyone expects it to be better, and so you all perceive everything you see as better"
Thats kind of an ignorant thing to say... maybe it IS better. Are you using it?
Come on man, be realistic, you havent made any contribution. Honestly.
Caelan, come on now.. me asking for pictures is me ASKING for proof, so why are you asking ME to provide proof?...
Why are you saying I am contribution a red ball and such? ... I am ASKING FOR PHOTOS in this thread, I am not really contributing anything untill people actually post photos - then I am contributing a source of photos for other people that want to view them.
Please stop this
why dont we have people take a picture of something then post it (on froyo) then take the same picture (on gb). good plan? xD isnt that the point of this thread? im too lazy to go back to gb or i would, i took two random pictures and they turned out "okay" but that was with flash, flash seems to work alittle better as in it doesnt falsh at the wrong times now. i dont see why the quality would be any better since this is a beta not even for our phones. they also said there is a performance boost and other stuff but none of that is in this version, i cant even zoom in with the camera without getting fc. id hold on a bit before comparing.

Hi guys, In just finished my Galaxy S review and would appreciate any constructive feedback

It might also be useful for anyone trying to decide on buying one.
Thanks.
A comparison between the SGS and the Nexus with GPS test would be usefull.
Good, well writen review. I noticed the same thing, when I handed my phone to others, they always comment on how light it is. After unlocking, they are dazzled by the screen quality. The majority of my officemates use smartphones and know what OS, specs of their phones; Blackberry, Android, Symbian (Nokia) and iPhones and they comment on how nice the Galaxy S is. I have disabled TouchWiz for obvious reasons.
nice review, thx!
i will receive mine tomorrow. i feel like a little child on the day before christmas
I disagree with your interpretation of the camera test. The galaxy shots are much better. They show much better dynamic range. Look how the n1 clips the sky all over the place. Its almost hard to look at. The shadows are also very very dark and lack very much detail. Then look at the galaxy shot. The sky is clipped, but much less so. There is still detail in the clouds. In the shadows, there is also far more detail than in the nexus. The second photographs may not be as extreme but they certainly show the galaxy dealing much better with the high dinamic range situation. I would say the galaxy completely trounces the n1 in those two test shots.
edit: I think you are confusing global contrast with detail.
GPs test please
PS. I really enjoyed your review. It seems like a review from a real person not someone paid to do it or etc. man that phone takes great vids!
Also, canyon play with the camera setting & retry the pic test?

Also, it's a bit strange you didn't even try touchwiz.. I tried launcher pro, but the look and feel of touchwiz is much more consistent with the rest of the native apps. The speed of touchwiz (specially after nolag fix) is very good, no difference with launcher pro.
What i also like is the samsung market where you get, otherwise paid, apps for free. Like Vlingo Voice Command, Asphalt 5 and some other stuff..

Yeah, when I got it I was thinking more as a user and not a reviewer. I should have tried TouchWiz for a day to be able to give my own opinion on it, then switch to a different launcher so I can compare the two.

The white balance of the n1 is a little cool and the white balance of the sgs is a little warm. The white balance is a personal preference. The n1 has a higher contrast curve and really poor dynamic range. The increased contrast is pribably what makes you like the photo more. The problem comes why you want detail in light and dark places. You can't do it. You can't reduce contrast in software in any helpful kind of way. The sgs has a rather flat contrast curve which can be increased using software or even another camera program to suit your tastes. It also will work in more diverse situations.

Just read the article on Gizmodo.com that was posted this afternoon.

Yep, Samsung Epic 4G.
Not surprising though since I'm very happy with my camera.
As a smartphone camera, I think it's as good as it gets.

What a ridiculous test. Who runs these websites? Highschool kids? Middle school kids?
They are "testing" cameras while they:
- Take the photo from different angles
- Take the photo with different color clothes on the subject
- Allow the subject to change her hair
- are taking pictures on different days?
- What is this Censor word when talking about camera?? 7 times???
REALLY?!

As a person that came from an HTC Hero I can truly say that the Epic4G has made me believe in taking camera shots from a phone again. The 5 Megapixel camera on the Hero just doesn't compare.
I wish HTC would focus on installing a quality sensor rather than upping the Megapixels to make phone look better on paper. Its kinda like overclocking a CPU and Marketing it at that speed knowing damn well it well it would be more stable if it was clocked down a bit with similar performance.

Yea, the test was absolute garbage, but I do believe that the Epic has the nicest camera of all of those phones they tested. They could have easily taken pictures of stationary objects like fruit while placing the cameras sitting still in the exact same place. Same for the contrast shot of that chicks face. Put the phones on a stationary surface so they are not moving, and then take the pictures while telling the subject to be as still as possible.

I voted Yes btw... mine has it too.
My phone's camera is fine.
Thanx!
But, considering the fact that DHD owners that join XDA do it for unbranding, upgrading, rooting, etc, and do not come here ONLY for the camera problem, I believe that, if all of them vote (even those that do not have the problem), we will get a good percentage sample.
It is something like the exit-poles while voting . Use a small sample from the crowd. It usually gives good results, close to reality.

I think it's a good idea too. Maybe once enough people have voted we can send the results to HTC repair center
Yeah, the results could be a good "attachment" with the DHD for service
Mine is fine. No problems here.
Yes mine does,
Mine is currently with HTC at the moment, in for it's second repair in 4 weeks. The first repair was for the original blur on the left but when I got the phone back from them last Friday, the blur was still present and after a few hours of use - the camera started producing really fuzzy and bad photos and so I rang HTC up over the weekend and they re-booked the phone in for another repair. Weather the blur problem and this new fuzzy photo problem are related I don't know.
Liam
Camera works fine here.
Works fine for me. Using leeroid.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
everythings pretty fine since day 1
@ stock btw.

Well my point of view is that a lot of people are completly unable to make the difference between blurred and non blurred photos. Believe me, a lot of people don't care about that because that doesnt look like a problem for them. It's like sounds and colors, humans don't react the same way.
That reminds me, just look in the thread I started, the two first pictures on the beach, the blur thing is higly noticeable on the left. But some people came and said they couldn't see anything wrong. That's the way humans work. We're all different.
Also, this problem doesn't occur in low light condition, because low light condition make noisy pictures, and the blur is nearly impossible to determine in that case. Even outside in good light condition, if you shoot a close subject, the blur thing may not apear. It really shows in good light condition when you shoot things like landscapes, buildings or trees.
Many people will come here and vote "no problem" because they just don't simply have the apropriate pictures. If they vote after indoor pictures, it will not help and the vote doesn't mean anything.
Mine is faulty, and two friends of mine got faulty devices too. There were quite a good bunch of report about this issue on the forum. We can't say for sure that a lot of DHD are concerned, but well, who can seriously say the contrary ?? (except the die hard HTC fans ... hehe I know there are some here and there ..)
Anyway, I think there's enough to say that there is a little quality control problem at HTC

So... which group is right?
Luthor_70 is right. For instance, I rarely use the phone camera, and it took me 8-9 days after purchase, and motive from XDA-DEVS to test the camera and spot the problem (make the test with outdoor pic and good light cond.).
Junta_mpb, my friend, the point is not which DHD user doesnt care about the problem and who does. The point is that we have spent a good amount of money, and we need a 100% working product. It is the customers right to have in his hands exactly what he paid for.
IMHO, no one should neglect defects like these.

My point is to address the insinuation that a participating group is providing false information. Saying that if one phone has a camera problem and concluding that those who say otherwise just don’t care to notice or lying because of a blind love affair with HTC is not logic I would subscribe to. I could be wrong with jumping to that conclusion, but thats why I posted my question.
I agree that we paid good money for something that we would like to be perfect. I am not contesting that. There are phones with defects. The topic, however, is about the camera and I think this should be isolated.
I checked my images again, indoor, outdoor, with trees and one with a 5-legged cow. They are fine and I dont think its because I'm just inclined to say so.
Junta, you have a point here, but, as in all votes and researches, the factor of "error" always exists. You cannot be absolute about anything in this life. I am just trying to track down an approximation of the problem, and nothing else.
What I was trying to say is that, if you purchase a phone for, lets say, 200 euro, you cannot expect the quality of a phone that costs 600 euro (like DHD). Yes, the possibility of faulty devices is always there (only God can make something perfect). But, according to this vote (up to now), approximately 1 out of 3 has it. I personally know 2 more people (friends) with the same problem. Only my father's DHD is OK
And it could still be OK, although the size of the problem, IF HTC accepted that! They keep neglecting us, and fooling around with us. My phone is 10 days at service now, and when I called them they said that they still have no further info about the problem. For crying out loud, HTC has my phone more days in their hands than me! And according to previous experience, maybe a second visit will be required! This is the insane part.
Oh! I almost forgot! Please send me the picture with the 5 legged cow!
Kostas
(Sorry for my bad English).
Personally, I had 3 HD Desire HD and 2 had the perfect camera, but the strange thing is that the cameras are not only bad ones sold with the first phones, but also the latest build are defective, so it's a matter of luck in my opinion...
However, I propose to upload a photo of all those who vote, so we really understand the situation...
I start:

I still have to upload it. Let me try using my phone.
Sony ericsson wants to control the brightness of their phones it seems. At first there was just no option at all to disable auto brightness and now they give the option where 100% brightness turns it off otherwise it will always be dynamically controlled. How pathetic is this? Well maybe someone likes the way they handle it but how can you possibly not give the option? Does SE think all it's users are noobs who need to be told how to save battery?
Then comes the camera compression issue. Once again SE thinks the users are noobs and would be running out of space on their phones and would complain and blah blah. While the camera is still really good for normal photos once you zoom in or crop it quickly becomes a pile of garbage.
So a beautiful display limited by the software, an awesome camera limited by the software. I know you can root and all but thats not something everyone wants to do.
It seems the design is like the only thing SE can get right, I really wanted to get arc S white which is like the best looking android phone I have ever seen. But I didnt mostly for the 2 serious problems I mentioned. Even if they fix them in some upcoming update the very fact that these are not bugs and are intentional decisions makes me wonder what other EDIT up SE is going to decide for it's customers in the future.
It's such a wasted potential it's really irritating.
Lots of things are changing at sony, software is a small part of it you know eventually you will be able to get the best out of the hardware in your own ways.
Still waiting for a dev to make a camera compression mod, arc s camera was a huge let down

While I agree that there should be a way to enable and disable the automatic brightness, I'm inclined to believe that SE has their reasons for the camera picture compression.
They wouldn't artificially limit the performance of the camera on their phone if they didn't have a reason, and I highly doubt it's because they think the users are "noobs". Also you have to remember that with ICS in the works, they're not going to put that much effort into fixing gingerbread issues, especially since the camera libraries/drivers are very different in ICS.
I know the camera compression issue has been around even before the ICS release, so it could just be some tradeoff/limitation in gingerbread and SE decided to opt for performance over quality (when taking pictures).
Just my thought on this, but I think it's a little too early to be judging.
So why are you going to post these things while almost people know it for a long time?

And then what will happen?
is there a way around the camera compression as of now? i hate the picture quality when i zoom in.
auto brightness
Maybe the camera backlit sensor is the reason. try this, slide the brightness to 0 then capture a very low light scene. then compare with brightness above 30 or 50.
it makes big difference. perhaps it's used to compensate. those coming from x1 might remember with camera was used brightness always go to maximum.
just my thought.

Maybe they will finally listen to the complaints? The internet has very big influence these days, we have seen this time and time again.

Well but thats never going to be enough, there is a reason why all other good cameraphones have a file size about 3x more at the same resolution.
as you say,it is the best looking android phone,so,don't complain
Seriously??? A new thread about autobrightness?
Could you be any more whiny?
The screen is JUST FINE, autobrightness-schmautobrightness...
You don't like it, get another phone and kiss us goodbye.
Although I bet a $100 that you will find something terribly and devastatingly wrong with it too.
PM me for my paypal account.
It controlls the brightness perfect.
Nothing to complain about.

These are NOT serious issues!
Can you view the phone display clearly? Yes
Can the phone take decent photos? Yes
You need to have some proper worries in your life to put things in perspective! Or you could just have a winge on twitter at them too!

You cannot review the picture quality when zooming in on the phone in the gallery app with Bravia activated. It does some odd stuff to enhance details on screen that also will make the picture look ugly when zooming in. At least I think it is due to Bravia engine, picture looks fine opening it in Quickpic on Android or on pc.
There is no noticeable jpg compression artifications visibile to my eye when viewing the picture on my pc, even comparing it to pictures from my dslr of the same motive.
You can use ProCapture camera app to take pictures with less jpg compression but I doubt you will be able to see any difference from the normal compression.

You have very low standards it seems, when the competition is offering better things it is a serious issue. We are in a mobile forum, you can talk about other issues of life somewhere else.
And when I am gaming in the dark I really donot enjoy having automatic brightness, I want like 50% brightness as 100% is too much and auto is too low.
Sony is being like apple, giving you ridiculous restrictions that make no sense.
Use an app for cameramagic. Uses digital zoom with not much compression. However even i tend to stick to stock camera because its just bang on

While I don't really care about this topic and not bothered about the brightness.
Why don't you leave the thread in peace? He wants to have a discussion so let him!

At first I thought I was dreaming but sure enough since the update the shutter lag is almost gone. It was a 230MB update, it seems like they updated a lot of stuff. Also my battery life is much better since the update from what I've seen.
Great stuff.
Mine seems better as well. My battery doesn't drop from 100 to 99 in the 1st 10 seconds anymore either lol
Seems about the same

Camera seems the same to me, I didn't have complaints before though. I think the reason it drops to 99 right away is because the phone charges to 100% then charging turns off and starts charging again at 99%, so you may have just unplugged at a more opportune moment.
Camera still lags massively for the front facing camera
Not seeing much of an improvement on camera lag here... Still pretty terrible.
Still lags and sucks. lol
I definitely got better battery and rear camera is a little better.. Front facing still sucks

You do realize what everyone is saying sucks is the very thing you say in your "p.s", right?
The fact you do have to wait so long before it focuses and takes a picture is what sucks about it. Any decent smartphone doesn't come close with how long this camera takes.
I tap it, it focuses, it takes the shot.
I must be missing the problem here.
I'm aware it has a slow shutter but that doesn't make it suck. It means I need to use it differently until they fix it.
It could be worse. It could take pics uber fast and never truly focus, ala gnex. There was no fixing that garbage camera.
This all reminds me of my wife. She has always taken my hand me downs. She wanted my Note 2, because it took great pics.
Then she got it and they sucked. Then she wanted my Note 3 because it took great pics. Then she said something was wrong because her camera shots came out bad.
Then she got a Note 4 because of the camera. She complains about the pics again. We went on a trip yesterday and both snapped pics. She doesn't understand why my Turbo pics look so much better.
I have a secret weapon: I let it focus. Too many people take pics on their phones and are too impatient to even let them properly focus.

That's the very problem for some of us - we don't have time to let it focus before we miss the shot we want. I have an 18 month old, if I can't capture something the split second it happens, the moment is gone. My S4 focused much quicker, and I've played around some with the G2 and G3, both of which are also faster. Don't get me wrong, the Turbo bests all of those phones in the categories that matter more to me, focusing and shutter speed (or lack thereof) is this phone's one flaw in my opinion. Both of which I really hope can be fixed with software tweaks. No reason this phone's HP shouldn't allow improvements there.
I definitely noticed an improvement in the front camera, even before I read any comments on here.

A phone camera has never been good for instant action though if you don't anticupate. They don't have the hardware for it imo. Ive seen people with ois make blurry shots snd blame the device.
Ive always learned to antcipate for good shots on a phone and is worked out pretty well. I'm sure the software will get improved. Last years motos had camera woes too that were largely addressed by software updates.

You keep missing the point here... the point those of us complaining is there are several phone's that exist today, many of which are generations behind the turbo that take pictures much faster than the turbo does (my GS3 and GS4 sdsurferbob mentioned being perfect examples).
Listen, I love my Turbo and have no regrets for choosing it, it's just super disappointing and almost inexcusable for any feature of a "flagship" to be worse than phones 3+ years old.

I think you missed my point. Im aware of the shortcomings but no amount of stating this will fix the problem. We as users can adjust until then, however.
Im aware of phones that snap better pics, because ive owned them. However somehow i take better pics with my turbo than my wife with her note 4. The only variable is the user right? Ive learned to overcome. We CAN take good pics. Or we can tell everyone the camera sucks and just suffer because we don't want to take the time to do better. I chose the prior and I get great pics.
I'll be happy when moto fixes the camera, but until then I will adapt.
Got my Moto Maxx today and I was expecting the camera to be very slow, and its way faster than what I've seen on some reviews. Still not as fast as it should be but I'm confindent Lollipop will solve all camera problems.
Lower the resolution and it takes them even faster.
It's a phone with a camera to me. If I'm going to an event and pics are important I have a camera to bring. If I need one spur of the moment this camera works fine for me. Just my opinion.
