Will 3.1 icreamsandwhich be ported for the glacier soon? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just wondering... icecream sandwhich sounds deliecious...

3.1 is not ice cream sandwich. That's going to be android 4.0 which hasn't even been released yet buddy.

Although 3.1 is rocking. Looking forward to the usb peripheral support. Toshiba thrive out next month. Grabbing it the day it comes out.
I read somewhere units with micro usb supporting 3.1 can still utilize this function with an adapter.
Fyi 3.1 is still honey comb

sorry 4.0 then. i ask because i saw a article somewhere from like may or somthin of 2010 that said wed be getting it soon so was just wondering if it ever came out. didnt know its not even in beta yet...

Ice Cream Sandwich is going to be farrrrr away. And I believe it's going to be 2.4
It's going to appear first on the Nexus 3 later this winter, probably around Christmas. So take account the time for Google to open source it, and then for Cyanogen to cook it up... We'll probably won't see Ice Cream Sandwich on this phone until early next year. Probably around Jan-Feb at the earliest.

Our first chance of seeing IceCreamSammich on this phone will likely be with CyanogenMod when ICS is released to AOSP. I'm too big a fan of some of the Sense underpinnings and apps (camera, browser) to use CM7, but for ICS, I might just go with CM8.

yea i use dolphin browser and the camera is the only thing i like about sense roms... aosp are so raw royal ginger is where its at ... bluemagic theme with adw ex is dope

I just read this article saying that the Nexus 4G will be Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich".

AOSP is the only way to go.
w/ either LPP or ADW/EX.

I think it would make the most sense to make Ice cream Sandwich 4.0. 3.x is tablets, 2.x is smartphones. since it doesn't fit in either specifically, it probably will need a new number.
And chances are it will leak out on to phones through the SDK at some point. I've heard that the emulator for the versions is released long before it is open sourced so devs can make apps for it. people are expecting it to appear in the SDK as early as Q3 this year. We can hope, right?

Honeycomb is all but done my friend. It's been seen running on tablets already and rumor has it we may even see a Honeycomb tablet next month.
Here's Google's leaked demo of Honeycomb. I'm pretty sure that's not all CG'ed.
EDIT- I can't help but notice that FroYo was released last Summer, Gingerbread released during the holidays, Honeycomb will be showing up in late winter / early spring, and Ice Cream again in the summer. Interesting!

My guess is that they renamed gingerbread to "ice cream" for the phones instead of calling it gingerbread also

I didn't realize honeycomb was done already. From what I see is honeycomb will be tablet only. My question is if the tablets get 3.0 and smart phones get 2.3 what's going to happen after 2.9?
I never realized there update schedual to you pointed it out.

The OS version dubbed honeycomb may be tablet only, nothing about that means that phones won't see past 3.0
Unified versions. Phone OS and tablet OS will eventually merge into a single OS.

Yeah, all signs point to Honeycomb being tablet-only. It looks like they will go to 2.4 for Ice Cream and at some point they will merge the two as muyoso mentioned.
I'll bet Google put a different team on Honeycomb then they did on Gingerbread; I'm sure they collaborated but since Honeycomb is going to split off as the Tablet branch of the Android tree, they've probably got a separate team working on all the Tablet features like sorting out app / resolution conflicts and tablet UI enhancements. Anyhow this would explain the relatively short time between launches.
From my understanding Google wants the Chrome OS on tablet and netbook. I think honeycomb is something to hold tablet people over til Chrome is ready. And Android has already jumped a lot of numbers they can easily jump 3.x and go to 4 for phones.

Chrome OS is going to get dropped or at very least put on the shelf for a while. Android is too popular for Google to abandon it at this point. Its on everything. Also, at this point chrome os is no where near ready to publicly launch for consumers. Consumers would hate the OS for the most part. It offers zero advantages over android. Also, it looks like Honeycomb is running some modified version of chrome, so I am sure chrome OS apps will work on honeycomb. Maybe it wont be natively, but if there is a reason to do it, XDA will provide.

Android 2.4 Ice Cream Releasing Summertime?

Ah don’t you just love the way the Google guys keep on with the sweet names for their Android operating system, sooner or later they will run out of ideas, but not for the next version of their OS which will apparently be called Ice Cream.
According to an article over on the Boy Genius Report by Andrew Munchbach, a report by Pocket-lint says according to “multiple sourse familiar with the matter,” the Android 2.4 Ice Cream operating system is to be released by Google sometime in either June or July of this year.
Furthermore apparently Google is expected to announce this during Google I/O 2011 in San Francisco in May. Android Ice Cream will be the next in a long line for desert-style naming from Google with the Android platform receiving Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread and then Android Honeycomb for Android tables, and now Ice Cream, one wonders where it will all end.
That’s all that’s known about the new operating system no word on just what to expect improvement wise or feature wise when Ice Cream finally makes it into the Android space. Any of our readers care to hazzard a guess at what Android 2.4 Ice Cream will deliver?

Nice info, thanks for sharing!
I thought the name would be Ice Cream Sandwich as mentioned in the second link.. still nice
But the versionnumber 2.4 is hard to believe when we are already at 2.3 even before Honeycomb. Even if (which I seriously doubt) Google would seperate their software in 2 different "branches" the newest branch will unlikely have a lower version number.
Just my 2 cents

Ice cream for DHD ?!

Google has now set the update support to at least 18 month.
and ice cream (4.0) will be released in autuum.
So we should get ice cream directly when it will be released from google am i right?
No waiting for HTC version anymore, one version for all (phones, tablets, ...)
Gingerbread just came out for the DHD and we're already getting threads about this.
Even if our phones get it, it will still take some time for HTC to put the Sense UI on it.
That's what I'm talking about..GB rom..what next??? Ice cream rom???? lol
I dont think we(DHD Users) will get Ice Cream this year if we will get.
I'll have two scoops please
It will likely start after the "agreement" between the manufacturers and Google. That is, phones made before the date will not be under such "agreement".
if i understood it google correctly the new ice cream rom (prop. Android 4) will be availible for every phone as soon as google has released it.
that would be a no sense version of course but who cares..
I'm happy with Gingerbread, but just wondering- anyone know if Ice Cream will have minimum hardware specs, such as dual core processors only? Getting very confused with all these different version now!
Also I heard they were going to combine the different releases, so we don't have one for phones and one for touch pads, can anyone confirm this?
ta.
We may not get it officially, but I am sure we will get it from the developer community ie cyanogenmod .

That's the way I read it in a previous press release. The reason being that there is now multiple versions all under the "Gingerbread" and "Honeycomb" monikers. The plan is to unify under the "Ice Cream Sandwich" (I think it will become ICS at least on here)
As for min specs, at present I haven't seen any though through official channels (Handset manufacturers) they have put limits on min specs for what they will release for each device. The Dev's on here on the other hand have had other ideas, and Devices which should be locked to Eclair have Froyo and even experimental (Slower than treacle) Gingerbread roms.
As others have said, the dev's on here will find a ways and a means to it. I guarantee there will be an ICS rom for the DHD, will it be useable? That is the unknown.
And hoqpus, Google will release it to the Handset manufacturers at the same time, and they release it to the users. each one has its own Apps it "forces" on its users (Except the Nexus line of phones) HTC will want to redo Sense (3.5 / 4.0?) for these phones, if the current line up can take it. Hey sense 3.0 supposedly requires a dual core chip. This could be the reason that we won't see an offical DHD ICS rom arrive.
The DHD will get the ics update when the xda finished the porting ... The xda is the best way

why are you posting in a 7 month old thread?

Does google plan on updating the xoom again?

???
I wish google would hint towards the future for us early adopters..
Forgetabout a new update lets see source!
Google promised updates for 18 months on new devices. http://thisismynext.com/2011/05/10/google-promises-android-devices-updates-18-months/
First tablet to market with Android 3.0
First tablet with Android 3.1
Google has announced 4.0 Ice cream.
Hopefully we'll be the first with 4.0 too
As far as the OP I don't think the question should be about Google updating the xoom really. Google makes honeycomb so i think the real question has to be whether they will update honeycomb again before ice cream comes out. As far as I can tell once the next version of android OS comes out the previous version seems to stop being upgraded (once froyo came eclair stopped moving, froyo stopped updating with gingerbread, etc). Will honeycomb stop with ice cream? judging by the past, probably.
As far as the future of early adopters, I think the best thing to hope for is that the xoom (tegra 2) will be sufficient to run ice cream and be compatible enough that it will appear OTA directly from Google. As far the xoom being the first device to get it, I highly doubt it. Odds are a new "vanilla" device be it phone or tablet will debut the OS (also with whatever developments have been made in mobile processors since tegra2 under the hood). Yes the naked truth is that it is a fast fast moving market.
The percs offered to early xoom owners from google have been: first to get honeycomb 3.1 and guaranteed invitation/acceptance to Google music. Beyond this I don't think Google has anymore special treatment up the sleeves. And I don't immagine they are that stoked about being subtly expected to do damage control for Motorola's 4g problems.
If there does happen to be a HC 3.2 upgrade before ice cream then perhaps xoom owners may be first to get it but at any rate i immagine ice cream ends up on the xoom regardles, either through xda or Google or of course both.
And I think that is the future for xoom owners.
Edit: and just to clarify, I dont think Google exactly promised that they would update devices for 18 months, but rather that their partners have promised to update their devices to run whatever compatible android versions are released for those devices for 18 months. I.e no being stuck on froyo forever even though your phone can run gingerbread. What we would want to hear iis tthat Google promises to release compatible updates for your device for 18 months, but this isnt what they said. Plus that would pivot around device release times which isn't possible. If a new device comes at the end of an OS cycle I doubt Google will carry version for another year because one phone hopped on at the last minute. Btw sorry to be so cynical guys, just calling it as i see it
No update no sd
It will most likely not be updated again and will not receive sd card support anymore.
HC 3.1 is the final version, next version is smoerrebroed 4.0.

My guess is that the xoom will definitely get ice cream sandwich given that its a pure google device. The nexus s just came out and its specs are worse than the xoom and nexus will definitely get ice cream sandwich. Now whether the other tablets get the upgrade is up to the manufacturer.
Hardware specs are not the limiting factor to getting android upgrades, its manfacturers modding android to fit their custom software like compiz or motoblur.

ice cream is for cellphones and tablets ( I think this is gonna be for 7" tablets and lower) and honeycomb is a OS optimized for tablets, so I think that we will see more honeycomb updates

Ice Cream Sandwich will be the latest version of Android upon release and will apply to everything (phone, tablet, tv). They are not going to continue Honeycomb as some kind of separate "large screen tablet" branch after ics as you seem to be implying.

No, they said it would be merging of the Tablet and Phone - so it should be any sized screen (although that probably just ranges from phone (can't think of lowest size, but lets say for the sake of argument 3" -> tablet 10.1"

I concur - that's how I read it all too
Also I imagine there may be a couple of bugfixes along the way but nothing major till ICS (4.0?)
so maybe 3.1.1, 3.1.2, probably not a 3.2 - only if there's a new feature they want to push out that is fairly big...
However - if google are responsible for the SD Card slot - then 3.2 may address that issue - else it'd probably just be a 3.1.1 update judging on how they have done updating numbering on the past...
I think Google had Moto add SD to be ready for Ice cream. Its my idea that that was the plan maybe im crazy but who knows

CM7, MIUI ... all great but without source for honeycomb not really
With the release of the Ice Cream Sandwich source they will get on the tablets for sure!
Questions or Problems Should Not Be Posted in the Development Forum

Moving to General
While it is probably possible to port CM7 to the tab 10.1, someone would need to do the work.
And I doubt anyone would want to port a phone OS to a tablet OS.
CM7 is gingerbread only, which is phone only (those 7 inch tablets running gingerbread don't make very good tablets to me).
I doubt honeycomb source will ever get released and thus not viable for cyanogen mod.
I would not be suprised however that cyanogen will port ice cream sandwich though, for which the source will be available. That might be called CM8 then.
This future CM8 may be ported to the tab 10.1 then...
However, if it ever comes, it will not be this year.
