We don't even have froyo never mind gingerbread. Honeycomb is next and that's 3.0 and they haven't even started working on that and your worried about ice cream being 2.4. Ice cream would be 3.x since google goes in alphabetical order

Fair enuff but gingerbread was just finished. I'm sure there taking a short break and then working on honeycomb. I wouldn't expect 2.4 our ice cream in the summer if this rumor is true

Honeycomb is all but done my friend. It's been seen running on tablets already and rumor has it we may even see a Honeycomb tablet next month.
Here's Google's leaked demo of Honeycomb. I'm pretty sure that's not all CG'ed.
EDIT- I can't help but notice that FroYo was released last Summer, Gingerbread released during the holidays, Honeycomb will be showing up in late winter / early spring, and Ice Cream again in the summer. Interesting!

My guess is that they renamed gingerbread to "ice cream" for the phones instead of calling it gingerbread also

I am pretty sure Honeycomb is tablet only. Thats what I took from that video anyway.

I didn't realize honeycomb was done already. From what I see is honeycomb will be tablet only. My question is if the tablets get 3.0 and smart phones get 2.3 what's going to happen after 2.9?
I never realized there update schedual to you pointed it out.

The OS version dubbed honeycomb may be tablet only, nothing about that means that phones won't see past 3.0

Unified versions. Phone OS and tablet OS will eventually merge into a single OS.

Yeah, all signs point to Honeycomb being tablet-only. It looks like they will go to 2.4 for Ice Cream and at some point they will merge the two as muyoso mentioned.
I'll bet Google put a different team on Honeycomb then they did on Gingerbread; I'm sure they collaborated but since Honeycomb is going to split off as the Tablet branch of the Android tree, they've probably got a separate team working on all the Tablet features like sorting out app / resolution conflicts and tablet UI enhancements. Anyhow this would explain the relatively short time between launches.

From my understanding Google wants the Chrome OS on tablet and netbook. I think honeycomb is something to hold tablet people over til Chrome is ready. And Android has already jumped a lot of numbers they can easily jump 3.x and go to 4 for phones.

Chrome OS is going to get dropped or at very least put on the shelf for a while. Android is too popular for Google to abandon it at this point. Its on everything. Also, at this point chrome os is no where near ready to publicly launch for consumers. Consumers would hate the OS for the most part. It offers zero advantages over android. Also, it looks like Honeycomb is running some modified version of chrome, so I am sure chrome OS apps will work on honeycomb. Maybe it wont be natively, but if there is a reason to do it, XDA will provide.

I'm waiting till they get to "S" then it will be android 10.0 called "SKYNET". yes.. get me some guns!

Gingerbread is released, Honeycomb is confirmed and is due out in a couple weeks, Ice cream sandwich should be fall of this year (my guess)
I don't think Ice Cream Sandwich will be 2.4. As a consumer, I would be thrown off if I was trying to buy a phone (or tablet) and 2.4 was newer than 3.0. It just doesn't make sense and just adds to the fragmentation that android is already plagued by.
Also, honeycomb is confirmed to work on phones as well as tablets (dive into mobile conference, Andy Rubin) so why would it be 2 dot anything?
Most Likely ICS will be 3.x, as a bugfix and enhancer to honeycomb, similar to what gingerbread was to froyo.
That’s right, in a move that shows there is some kind of cover-up of the mistake of the lack of Android 2.3 devices on the market (aside from the Nexus S) 2.4 will still be called Gingerbread, as the only new feature it adds will be this ability to support dual-core apps on a single-core device.

Makes sense, developers will start making apps that only dual core devices can handle. A casual update to phones to support dual core apps will please consumers and calm everyone down while waiting for honeycomb on their phones.

From what i've heard about it i'm not sure i'm going to like the graphical changes in Ice Cream. In fact i'm so enamoured with the stock GB look i don't want it to ever change

2.4 Is meant to be also Gingerbread, with a small update (as mentioned before, like 2.0 and 2.1) the first link you posted said 2.4 as a guess (by the poster of the article I believe), but it's been said already that a second gingerbread version is coming out as 2.4

The rest of that article is right, there is an Ice Cream version coming out with some honeycomb features, but it's likely to be higher than 3.0 (or 2.5 if they're splitting the version numbers for tablet and phone)

So now that we have a pretty stable sense 3.0/android 2.3.3 rom thanks to virus. Whats next for the evo world? Ice Cream Sandwich AOSP*possibly* will run on evo(ill explain why in paragraph 2).Sense 3.1(or whatever will be next sense)less probable to run(if it does it will have EGL issues up the A**, of course).
At Google IO 2011, google had some pretty cool sh*t([email protected]=dope). But with ice cream sandwich coming, will google up their hardware requirements(possibly,50/50).Especially with those cool google apps coming(google music beta, awesome)
Another topic covered by googleis that a number of vendors:Verizon, HTC, Samsung, Sprint, Sony Ericsson, LG, Tmobile, Vodafone, Motorola, and AT&T have comitted to providing the latest updates for their devices for 18 months. Now, the HTC Evo 4G launched on June 4, 2010(Duh),now adding 18 months to that makes it December 4, 2011. Now, Ice Cream Sandwich is *Rumored* to be released in late November or early December. So their is hope evo will get ice cream if its hardware still supports it, but htc may get lazy and still give us sense 1.0.
Remember, that this is all based on my own *opinions*, and is to be taken as possible outcome.

oops, my mistake.
Based off off all information gathered at google io and google.com, i beleive it will get it, but will be stuck at sense 1.0, but our devs will fix that.

The promised 18 months of updates is only for hardware released from Google I/O forward. So we will be lucky if we get it.

GAYTC said "that the Evo 4g doesn't have the required hardware for 2.3 with sense" Which is another excuse to make you buy the new Evo 3D just so they can get more money off you, With that said it's most likely that the Evo 4g won't be getting ice cream and be left behind because of "the required hardware for it".

As far as the OP I don't think the question should be about Google updating the xoom really. Google makes honeycomb so i think the real question has to be whether they will update honeycomb again before ice cream comes out. As far as I can tell once the next version of android OS comes out the previous version seems to stop being upgraded (once froyo came eclair stopped moving, froyo stopped updating with gingerbread, etc). Will honeycomb stop with ice cream? judging by the past, probably.
As far as the future of early adopters, I think the best thing to hope for is that the xoom (tegra 2) will be sufficient to run ice cream and be compatible enough that it will appear OTA directly from Google. As far the xoom being the first device to get it, I highly doubt it. Odds are a new "vanilla" device be it phone or tablet will debut the OS (also with whatever developments have been made in mobile processors since tegra2 under the hood). Yes the naked truth is that it is a fast fast moving market.
The percs offered to early xoom owners from google have been: first to get honeycomb 3.1 and guaranteed invitation/acceptance to Google music. Beyond this I don't think Google has anymore special treatment up the sleeves. And I don't immagine they are that stoked about being subtly expected to do damage control for Motorola's 4g problems.
If there does happen to be a HC 3.2 upgrade before ice cream then perhaps xoom owners may be first to get it but at any rate i immagine ice cream ends up on the xoom regardles, either through xda or Google or of course both.
And I think that is the future for xoom owners.
Edit: and just to clarify, I dont think Google exactly promised that they would update devices for 18 months, but rather that their partners have promised to update their devices to run whatever compatible android versions are released for those devices for 18 months. I.e no being stuck on froyo forever even though your phone can run gingerbread. What we would want to hear iis tthat Google promises to release compatible updates for your device for 18 months, but this isnt what they said. Plus that would pivot around device release times which isn't possible. If a new device comes at the end of an OS cycle I doubt Google will carry version for another year because one phone hopped on at the last minute. Btw sorry to be so cynical guys, just calling it as i see it

My guess is that the xoom will definitely get ice cream sandwich given that its a pure google device. The nexus s just came out and its specs are worse than the xoom and nexus will definitely get ice cream sandwich. Now whether the other tablets get the upgrade is up to the manufacturer.
Hardware specs are not the limiting factor to getting android upgrades, its manfacturers modding android to fit their custom software like compiz or motoblur.

ice cream is for cellphones and tablets ( I think this is gonna be for 7" tablets and lower) and honeycomb is a OS optimized for tablets, so I think that we will see more honeycomb updates

No, they said it would be merging of the Tablet and Phone - so it should be any sized screen (although that probably just ranges from phone (can't think of lowest size, but lets say for the sake of argument 3" -> tablet 10.1"

I concur - that's how I read it all too
Also I imagine there may be a couple of bugfixes along the way but nothing major till ICS (4.0?)
so maybe 3.1.1, 3.1.2, probably not a 3.2 - only if there's a new feature they want to push out that is fairly big...
However - if google are responsible for the SD Card slot - then 3.2 may address that issue - else it'd probably just be a 3.1.1 update judging on how they have done updating numbering on the past...

I think Google had Moto add SD to be ready for Ice cream. Its my idea that that was the plan maybe im crazy but who knows

Wildfire didn't get official Gingerbread, so I can't see how on earth you people are linking HTC's posts on ICS, and, "waiting/hoping" for official ICS, no less.

I agree with 3xeno.

When they said they'll upgrade as many of their devices, the meant recent
devices. So what, HTC will upgrade the G1 to ICS? No go. And plus, they declared the Wildfire as end-of-life. Nullifying the chance.
I am not trying to say I don't want official ICS; I do want it very much, but there is a slim chance of it happening.

At this point, I am more worried about UN-official ICS, official be damned. (Again, I am repeating, Wildfire didn't get official Gingerbread, so I honestly don't know what makes us think even an iota that it will get official ICS)
Remember, the Gingerbread SDK Port DID run on the Wildfire (Jacob's GingerFire Alpha ROM), which is not the case with ICS, and arco has pretty much confirmed any attempts to have an ICS SDK port up and running are going to be futile, because the ICS SDK doesn't support the old ARMv6 CPU, period.

I completely agree with you 3xeno. The HTC Wildfire lacks GPU and the processor is too slow. So there won't be an Official ICS and probably not even an Unofficial port of ICS AOSP.

Well, even the Nexus One won't get official ICS, as Google says its hardware is too old.
