So I just got my asus transformer the other day, and coming from an avid iPhone/iOS background, I feel a bit let down. In no way am I a fanboy, but theres issues im having with this android device that have never been as such with iOS.
Mainly, proxy settings! I was fortunate enough to get my device a day before the 3.1 update came out, and the update brought with it native support for manually setting the proxies.
unfortunately, these settings dont work. I set it up to work with my workplaces proxy server and even though the info is there, they dont work. not only that, they only apply to the browser. Two huge issues!! Now most people would just discard the device and go back to what theyre used to, but I want to give this device a chance before I (possibly) return it to the store.
Are there any apps for 3.1 that set a UNIVERSAL proxy setting? Something that not only will work, but also apply the proxy settings to youtube, the market place, and anything else that runs on the device. Before the update came out, I tried using AnyCut to setup a shortcut to the hidden proxy settings, but even then it was shoddy at best. Half the time id click on the link and it wouldnt even open up the proxy settings page. (note, Half. it did work sometimes)
Essentially, if I cant get this thing to run at work, its going back and will be exchanged for an Acer Iconia running win7. I really hope theres a solution here!
Yeah, I'm quite disappointed with the proxy support in they included in the update. If they couldn't apply it to everything, at least update the core apps to use it. I mean, I can't even get my email over the proxy.
i used to use TransProxy on my phone and it worked great.
you may not be happy about a honeycomb tablet, but a Windows 7 tablet wil absolutely drive you mad ..
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
so I searched for TransProxy in the market place. and found something called ProxyDroid.
tried it, what the hell, and it works Better. I still cant get the facebook app / mobile facebook site to work. but its a step ahead of the silly native proxy support. hmmm never had to go through any of this crap on my iPhone. grr

"The new OpenWeb browser will be an automatic install for Sprint customers who currently access the Internet on their data-enabled phones (Sprint characterizes availability as "virtually all Web-capable Sprint phones"), and won't require any additional action. Once installed, users will be able to access the Web just by clicking the Web icon on their phone's main menu. "
So..... we just sit, and it magically comes through?
i dont see how that will work unless we force an update like rom imaging, but if sprint does manage to automatically install software without our knowledge and intervention, we'd be looking at a new virus
if you click the openweb link from the link on this thread, it looks like its more like a proxy that changes the web serverside for us...maybe no software will be installed?
I might be wrong, i only glanced at it quickly.

yea, im sticking to just using opera mobile for now. it renders right on your phone and im liking it so far.
With Gingerbread and Honeycomb being talked about ... I was curious if anyone knows if there are any solutions to two issues that I personally think should be solved.
Web proxy - I use wifi at work but I need to use a proxy to get to the web. I am aware of some techniques to get the proxy working but haven't seen a good, simple way of turning a proxy on and off. The best would be to have the proxy settings associated to the wifi profile.
Incoming Voice Recording - Last time I looked into this there still was no way to directly access the incoming voice ... most programs suggest using speakerphone and it picks up the incoming voice through the mic. This is not a good solution.
For the proxy, you could use an application like Tasker (or Locale) to create a widget to run necessary shell commands to change the network properties. I think. I'd have to play with it a bit to get it to work, I imagine.
For the voice recording, my understanding is that it is a hardware limitation based on where (and at what level) the voice call is processed.
No and no.
Voice is Android system intended limitation, AFAIK.
Proxy switch isn't there yet, and no app has been written for it. Generally, WiFi management isn't quite there yet.
I've seen the proxy configuration screen on cyanogens ROM, have not tried it.

Very surprising & disappointing that there is no wifi proxy... It is a very basic requirements that should not be missed out.

Cyanogen has it. Flash and enjoy.
There is WiFi proxy in custom ROMs, but the problem is that it's global and it can't be turned on-off easily, only through settings.

Come on, it is so basic and should be built-into the stock rom. I am not expecting any mods to do this basic trick. This is the most disappointing thing.

There are lots of basic things that should be in the stock rom but aren't.
That's what custom ROMs are made for.
If you own a Nexus One and are not even willing to use (or even try) a custom ROM, then you will never fully enjoy the device. Google is RELYING on the openness of Android for people to enjoy their devices...

1st, I am a rom and kernel developer
2nd, This proxy thing is so basic that it has been already implemented in ipod touch N years ago.
3rd, while I can (I have) applied the wifi proxy things into MY CUSTOM ROM, I still think that this is a basic thing that should not waste my time to do such a customization
4th, I am sure you are not using wifi proxy and do not realize how important it is
5th, NEXUS one is a great phone. When you first boot it, it asks you for your google account (great!), however, sorry, because you are using wifi proxy, you cannot connect to the internet. So, if you cannot connect to the internet, there is no point for using a "GOOGLE" phone. That is why I say it is a basic thing.

No, I do not use a Wifi proxy but I know what it is and I am very aware of how important it is, which is why developers have added it in custom ROMs (like you did).
I am not trying to excuse Google for what they did, I am just saying there are alternatives and solutions to this problem so there is no point in complaining. Google will not be reading this, whining will not make them change their mind.
To add, Google couldn't even get Wifi sleep policy to actually work...ANY device can do that, but not our N1s...That's even more basic. I'm not whining on the forum for that since CM and others have worked-around this issue.
You (or anyone) cannot control Google, live with it.
I bought my TF as a toy/media consumption device but I'm finding more and more reasons to use it for work. Especially after enabling ad-hoc wifi to connect to my HTC HD2.
With 2X RDP (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.tux.client&feature=search_result) and the citrix VPN client (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.citrix.Receiver&feature=search_result)
I have the power of my virtual servers at my finger tips.
Polaris office is passable as is the browser and the office talk app keeps me "present" on office communicator (https://market.android.com/details?id=ocs.android&feature=search_result)
Who else is using their TF for work and what pros/cons/apps/tips have you discovered? Anyone got any war stories yet?
No war stories yet. Considering droid/tablet apps for the fed govt. The platform is gaining ground now that the feds are contracting with Google for cloud services.
That's strange, I didn't have to enable ad hoc WiFi to tether with my Droid Incredible (running CyanogenMod 7.0.3)... but it was terribly slow and the Market was basically unusable. I wonder if that's why?
Using Splashtop (well, MyCloud) inside my LAN for work purposes... No war stories, really.
I have apps for web development (mostly putty and some text editor with ftp access) ready in case I have an emergency situation when I'm out of home. But never had to do it yet. It wouldn't be easy because I don't have the keyboard dock yet.
Working in IT I've found myself using my TF101 for 75% of my work. With tools like LogMeIn, Wyse Pocket Cloud, Overlook Fing, andSMB, SharesFinder, ASProxy and Connect Bot I can basically do everything I need at my clients right on my tablet as long as they have a WiFi AP.
The only thing that is seriously lacking is serious Office document work. I've tried the 4 major Office suites, and yes I paid for all of them, Docs2Go, Office Suite Pro, Quick Office Pro HD and the included Polaris Office. From my experience, Polaris Office is hands down the best of the bunch overall and its good that it was included in our TF101's but even with the best android tablet optimized office suite editing and generating serious documents is cumbersome at best. It takes me almost 4 times the amount of time to copy an invoice, rename it, edit it and send it out even with the keyboard dock.
So I still use my ThinkPad for serious office document work, printing and to connect to devices via serial ports like Cisco and FortiNet network devices.
Now if devs can get something like Ubuntu to dual boot on our tablets then the Office document problem is solved with OpenOffice and if drivers can be made for USB ethernet and serial adapters to work with Honeycomb then I might just sell my laptop.
I had purchased the TF for 1/3 play, 2/3 work, when on the road - thinking I could use it as a secondary monitor for my thinkpad using idisplay. Fact is, idisplay's refresh rate is worse than I thought - it is virtually unusable (mouse moves way too slow), but still I'm using it to view my emails, to-do list, or specs for a project...
Yeah I use it all the time, I didnt even buy it for work reasons, but I found that it makes my job a lot easier
I work as a marketing assistant and its my job to document the production and make production instructions to the products my company produces.
So I bring my TF down from the office to the warehouse and make articles on our internal production wiki and take pictures. I couldnt use a regular laptop since I have to be quick and agile and walk around and between the machines we construct.
Working with my TF works SO much better than running up and down with papers.
I write a lot for work, so I am planning to use it as soon as I can get the docking station (not readily available in our parts yet).
How did you manage to connect it to an adhoc network? Or did you find a way to establish WiFi tethering in the AP mode? I am still at loss for this issue.
I would love to start using mine for work but this current company moved away from Citrix & Webapps (which work on android) to using App-V & SCCM instead... which done.
That plus the fact of Lotus Notes instead of Exchange = Fail. I'm stuck with a laptop for the moment
I also want to see usb to ethernet , then maybe my company will give it a go... but why is typing this reply soooo slow almost 1 second delay
I am kinda using it for work as I have my corp email account setup and my EVO does native tethering.
I have a blue tooth keyboard coming tomorrow for typing longer emails/documents.
I just need to get VPN Connections working for my offices Cisco VPN so I can RDP to servers and desktops via 2X.
I use Dolphin HD as my web browser and it does a great job over the stock browser.
Citrix client - how is your experience
How is your experience with the Citrix client?
I have it installed since I got the transformer with intention to use to open our work applications. It works, but it takes extremelly long to establish the connection (5 minutes) until the application is fully opened. Its not the network problem. I hit the same Citrix server from a laptop and use the same wifi, it works reasonably fast.
The issue is only with the connection time that is so long, once its connected, it works pretty well.
If I hit it from our internal network, it runs like crazy-very fast.

The initial connection for an application is something about 15 seconds to our unif. Once it is running, there is no more lag. You might want to look into it with your IT department and/or citrix. 5 minutes seems much to long!

Hi Kovla,
you need a modified version of the file called wpa_supplicant - then push that file to the right directory on your TF and set the correct permissions.
I followed these instructions and they worked perfectly for me - I used the third method listed. I have a rooted device - I've also done this using root explorer instead of adb. the modified file is attached to the thread.

My experience has been exactly the same as yours. Slow to conenct but then works fine. I haven't tried it internally because when I'm on the internal work network i don't need a tunnel.

I have noticed some typing lag in certain situations. Email and documents have been fine but typing into the browser sometimes gives me a small slow down. This did seem to get a little better with the firmware updates and then a little better again when I flashed Prime 1.4 - but that could be unrelated.
I take mine to work since we have software on our network that doesn't allow you access to certain sites (based on keywords I believe). Simply tether to my Inspire 4g and away I go!
Yes, I use mine at work...
to listen to tunes! Will also be using it to test HTML5/CSS3 websites for Androib tablet devices, and that other iOS (shudder) thing when I get some down time.

I hear your pain, we use Lotus Domino at work too, however we have IMAP enabled on our server, so that with Kaiten Mail makes it usable. Still waiting for Android Lotus Notes Traveller which I believe is very good. Ask your IT manager.

Hi everyone. I got my Nexus 7 just yesterday. Im loving the tablet so far but was annoyed to find out the proxy settings didnt work for all apps. ( brother has the s3 and says it works perfectly). I was wondering if there is a solution to this without rooting the device. I have rooted devices before: ( HTC desire HD, the Sensation but always disliked two things about rooting: A) I find it very time consuming especially if its your first time on a device because you have to read a lot. B) You can no longer update directly as is the norm and that is again ... very time consuming.
Is there any way to get the playstore to work in my universtiy without proxy-droid / rooting my device? Why dont Google open all proxies by default? I find this very counter productive:S

Why is there no global proxy for Android? Good question. There are browser-specific proxies (which is all that can be proxied in most cases anyway). Have you looked into OpenVPN? You don't need to be rooted to use OpenVPN. I thought I'd read that there was going to be a global proxy for Android in ICS or JB but some quick googling I didn't find anything.
And updates when just rooted are a non issue. You can get updates etc. You'll need to use something like OTA Rootkeeper to not get un-rooted in the process, but even with a custom recovery (latest TWRP) you can install OTA's etc, no problems.
Its really annoying. I feel like rooting a device just for that reason is silly. If proxy-droid can give you a global proxy as easily as it does, google really have no excuse for not implementing this as a stock option, especially not when so many people use their phones/ tablets in Universities/ academic / business settings with a proxied connection. To me it just seems like this contradicts the very principles that Android was developed for/ based upon. And yes, this is a useless rant but I just find it extremely annoying that my device cant even access the playstore now :S
I know it's not relevant to everyone, but I've been contacted by a few people asking what's going on, so I figured I'd just make a post about it.
I decided to move the site to a more powerful server this morning. I regretfully trusted my web hosts "one-click" option and it royal botched things up. To make matters worse, it updated the DNS settings BEFORE the new server was up and running, which is why the site is down. I've reverted back to the old server for the time being, but it will take a while for the DNS change to propagate.
In summary: The site is down. I'm really sorry. I'm working on getting it back up as soon as possible.
Update @ 4:00pm PST: The DNS TTL is finally starting to expire, so the site should be coming back online for most. If it's not up for you yet, it should be within the hour. Again, I'm very sorry for any inconvenience this caused.

Its a great site and resource for all things Fire TV. I've used it many times. Hope you are back up and running soon.
Any chance you could post your DNS records here so I can get to it now?
My 2nd FireTV just got here today and I went to view your guides on how to avoid auto-upgrading (if I'm lucky enough to have an older firmware) and I couldn't reach your page.
Nevermind - I used OpenDNS's cache check to get your working ip (208.113.161.249) and updated my DNS server to hard code it.. Just have to remember to delete it tomorrow..
thanks
Thanks for posting it. I was worried some may have happen. Like amazon tired something.good to know you and the site are ok. Keep up the good work.
its back online yay
Had a few questions about Fire TV news:
Do you know if/when the netflix app will get a new UI? Any recent news on hbo go app? Will they ever allow you to place games on external storage? Those are really the only issues i have with the device. Thanks, love your site.
Thanks for your efforts on your site. Its pretty much the defacto standard for AFTV stuff. I go there at least several times a week.
