I bought my TF as a toy/media consumption device but I'm finding more and more reasons to use it for work. Especially after enabling ad-hoc wifi to connect to my HTC HD2.
With 2X RDP (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.tux.client&feature=search_result) and the citrix VPN client (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.citrix.Receiver&feature=search_result)
I have the power of my virtual servers at my finger tips.
Polaris office is passable as is the browser and the office talk app keeps me "present" on office communicator (https://market.android.com/details?id=ocs.android&feature=search_result)
Who else is using their TF for work and what pros/cons/apps/tips have you discovered? Anyone got any war stories yet?
No war stories yet. Considering droid/tablet apps for the fed govt. The platform is gaining ground now that the feds are contracting with Google for cloud services.
That's strange, I didn't have to enable ad hoc WiFi to tether with my Droid Incredible (running CyanogenMod 7.0.3)... but it was terribly slow and the Market was basically unusable. I wonder if that's why?
Using Splashtop (well, MyCloud) inside my LAN for work purposes... No war stories, really.
I have apps for web development (mostly putty and some text editor with ftp access) ready in case I have an emergency situation when I'm out of home. But never had to do it yet. It wouldn't be easy because I don't have the keyboard dock yet.
Working in IT I've found myself using my TF101 for 75% of my work. With tools like LogMeIn, Wyse Pocket Cloud, Overlook Fing, andSMB, SharesFinder, ASProxy and Connect Bot I can basically do everything I need at my clients right on my tablet as long as they have a WiFi AP.
The only thing that is seriously lacking is serious Office document work. I've tried the 4 major Office suites, and yes I paid for all of them, Docs2Go, Office Suite Pro, Quick Office Pro HD and the included Polaris Office. From my experience, Polaris Office is hands down the best of the bunch overall and its good that it was included in our TF101's but even with the best android tablet optimized office suite editing and generating serious documents is cumbersome at best. It takes me almost 4 times the amount of time to copy an invoice, rename it, edit it and send it out even with the keyboard dock.
So I still use my ThinkPad for serious office document work, printing and to connect to devices via serial ports like Cisco and FortiNet network devices.
Now if devs can get something like Ubuntu to dual boot on our tablets then the Office document problem is solved with OpenOffice and if drivers can be made for USB ethernet and serial adapters to work with Honeycomb then I might just sell my laptop.
I had purchased the TF for 1/3 play, 2/3 work, when on the road - thinking I could use it as a secondary monitor for my thinkpad using idisplay. Fact is, idisplay's refresh rate is worse than I thought - it is virtually unusable (mouse moves way too slow), but still I'm using it to view my emails, to-do list, or specs for a project...
Yeah I use it all the time, I didnt even buy it for work reasons, but I found that it makes my job a lot easier
I work as a marketing assistant and its my job to document the production and make production instructions to the products my company produces.
So I bring my TF down from the office to the warehouse and make articles on our internal production wiki and take pictures. I couldnt use a regular laptop since I have to be quick and agile and walk around and between the machines we construct.
Working with my TF works SO much better than running up and down with papers.
I write a lot for work, so I am planning to use it as soon as I can get the docking station (not readily available in our parts yet).
How did you manage to connect it to an adhoc network? Or did you find a way to establish WiFi tethering in the AP mode? I am still at loss for this issue.
I would love to start using mine for work but this current company moved away from Citrix & Webapps (which work on android) to using App-V & SCCM instead... which done.
That plus the fact of Lotus Notes instead of Exchange = Fail. I'm stuck with a laptop for the moment
I also want to see usb to ethernet , then maybe my company will give it a go... but why is typing this reply soooo slow almost 1 second delay
I am kinda using it for work as I have my corp email account setup and my EVO does native tethering.
I have a blue tooth keyboard coming tomorrow for typing longer emails/documents.
I just need to get VPN Connections working for my offices Cisco VPN so I can RDP to servers and desktops via 2X.
I use Dolphin HD as my web browser and it does a great job over the stock browser.
Citrix client - how is your experience
How is your experience with the Citrix client?
I have it installed since I got the transformer with intention to use to open our work applications. It works, but it takes extremelly long to establish the connection (5 minutes) until the application is fully opened. Its not the network problem. I hit the same Citrix server from a laptop and use the same wifi, it works reasonably fast.
The issue is only with the connection time that is so long, once its connected, it works pretty well.
If I hit it from our internal network, it runs like crazy-very fast.

The initial connection for an application is something about 15 seconds to our unif. Once it is running, there is no more lag. You might want to look into it with your IT department and/or citrix. 5 minutes seems much to long!

Hi Kovla,
you need a modified version of the file called wpa_supplicant - then push that file to the right directory on your TF and set the correct permissions.
I followed these instructions and they worked perfectly for me - I used the third method listed. I have a rooted device - I've also done this using root explorer instead of adb. the modified file is attached to the thread.

My experience has been exactly the same as yours. Slow to conenct but then works fine. I haven't tried it internally because when I'm on the internal work network i don't need a tunnel.

I have noticed some typing lag in certain situations. Email and documents have been fine but typing into the browser sometimes gives me a small slow down. This did seem to get a little better with the firmware updates and then a little better again when I flashed Prime 1.4 - but that could be unrelated.
I take mine to work since we have software on our network that doesn't allow you access to certain sites (based on keywords I believe). Simply tether to my Inspire 4g and away I go!
Yes, I use mine at work...
to listen to tunes! Will also be using it to test HTML5/CSS3 websites for Androib tablet devices, and that other iOS (shudder) thing when I get some down time.

I hear your pain, we use Lotus Domino at work too, however we have IMAP enabled on our server, so that with Kaiten Mail makes it usable. Still waiting for Android Lotus Notes Traveller which I believe is very good. Ask your IT manager.

Hi,
I want my transformer to do everything my old netbook did and prove that is indeed possible. As you all probably know this does take some workarounds.
My mother always told me, if you're I doubt then someone else probably also is.
There for Ill post this up and my reason why.
One thing I cannot get working on Android is java sites like my online banking system. I'm sure with time it'll be possible but for now its not, so I thought of a work around which works for me with my setup.
I have a HTPC in my living room running Windows 7, it runs our TV, movies, recordings and such. I set up a user on this server which I use for when I vnc into to run stuff I can't on the Transformer, however it was annoying that the media center would have to shut down in order for me to do my vnc stuff, so I started looking around the net for a solution.
Hence this post. There is a way to get multiple users onto windows 7 simultaneously
http://www.ehow.com/how_6820442_allow-multiple-remote-desktop-sessions.html
The above article explains exactly what you need to do, easy easy...
Now I can view TV while getting banking done through a rdp connection.

I recently tried vlc direct and vlc remote app on my tab, and it is awesome! Now I want the full power! I want to full access to my pc with pc interface( like team viewer or log me in) but over wifi. The reason I choose wifi because my internet connection isnt fast enough to make it smooth. So is there an app for that?
I personally use Splashtop. It's fast enough for me to play racing games using a ps3 controller over the wifi.
I use splashtop.if you have a static IP from your provider you can log into your desktop from anywhere in the world with internet-including tethered to 3g.just some configuring in router needed.
I didn't like Spashtop so I went with 2X Client. Works great! Also you do not need a static IP if you don't feel like paying for it. Go to http://www.no-ip.com/ and get a free dyndns account. Also some routers (like my Cisco) have built in DynDNS.org capabilities.
Splashtop HD works fine for me.
I use "Unified Remote"
Find it amazing for controlling my PC, tons of preset remotes, custom remotes, free version available.
2x works flawlessly and is free.
I actually had not tried Splashtop, it was a different prog. Going to try it out from when I am home. When not at home, i'll use 2X.
Edit: Tried it and it doesn't support multiple monitors! Doesn't really need to buy it should deactivate the others like RDP does. Also it unlocks your computer, so anyone sitting there can see what your doing and could take control if they wish. Needs more work but good concept cause it's fast!
I choose Remote RDP, easy and fast
bought splashtop twice once for my phone and once for my acer a500... (hd) love them... can use it over the web too with cable modem
Splashtop HD works great inside the house and out. Even connected over tethering through my cellphone's 3g. Best $10 I've spent. HD is different (better for iconia) from the normal version. Although the normal one is free at GetJar.com right now (save $5 - works good on the Dell Streak 7). Very easy to control my computer just like sitting in front of it, and even though it has to change the resolution settings on my pc it doesn't screw up my desktop either (It changes the resolution so there's no scolling on the tablet 16:9 screen even though my desktop is 4:3).

Maybe I am lost on what you mean, but Team Viewer works for me over Wifi.
I can do IP connections at home, and non-ip based connections away from home.
The only thing is on the client, you need to enable Incoming LAN connections in the General options.
Or...Is there some feature that I am missing?
Teamviewer has an android app. works great over wifi or 3g. Put it on your PC and you can control any device from any other device, even wifi tethered.
you could even use your pc through your tablet through your phone.

I use Teamviewer universally on everything, phone, tablet and PC2PC then I use Splashtop and Pocketcloud as my phone/tablet to PC backup.
Teamviewer can be configured to use internal ips, so if your internet connection doesn't work well it can jump to the internal network instead.
Hi,
I have been doing some research and I just hit a wall and can't go any further.
I work for a software company that builds it's own products and has a lot of clients.
I've always liked the idea of webtop but never got around to even look at it as a laptop replacement till now upto an extent.
I installed Debian on webtop and tried to get vpn to work and failed miserably. Not to mention I haven't touched linux in 10 years.
What I need to keep webtop/lapdock:
Clean/Lightweight environment with fully functional browser.
Ability to remote desktop.
Ability to connect to vpn on clients' side and remote into servers to fix small issues.
Ability to mess with the portal we have to update quick changes for clients.
I know you can't do it all out of the box.
I installed Debian but got stuck on installing Cisco Anyconnect.
Installed openconnect but can't connect as it says no tun/tap driver found.
gnome-panel doesn't work but I can live with webtop panels but my OCD kills me having firefox and iceweasel both.
Iceweasel can't have flash and plugins as I could not find any plugins for armel.
All plugins are for i386 or amd64.
My simple question is:
Can I do all this from this webtop or I should just keep carrying laptop.
Can I carry lapdock when I go for vacation and stuff to not worry about a $1500 laptop and just carry $200 lapdock so I can still do something if sh*t hits the fan.
I think I wrote a long enough story to give you guys a basic understanding.
Any help/input would be greatly appreciated.
If lapdock can't replace laptop for basic needs of a software developer then I might as well just sell it and move to Droid 2 Global.
:flameSuitOn: just in case
Thank you in advance for your time and effort.
I just don't think the webtop idea is quite there yet. Im personally in the IT industry and tried to use the atrix as my primary device while being on the road and simply failed. I was able to get gnome-panel working amongst other things but its far too sluggish. Try logmein and see what happens lol. The concept is truely amazing but that's as far as it goes.
Now if all you need to do is vpn, log into routers/switches etc it will do the job. Its much easier then pulling out a laptop and waiting for windows to boot. But anything extensive, Java or Flash based is impossible.
Just my. 02 cents.
It's a little difficult to try to use the lapdock as your primary device. I personally use it as my laptop at college (i have a desktop in my room) I can rdp into my desktop just fine, and access all programs from there, but the experience is definitely a bit laggy. You can try to get it a bit faster if you overclock, but that's a whole other can of worms. Firefox 6 runs, and can use most add-ons...
Personally, I might look into something like the ASUS Transformer Prime, once the dev scene there gets into gear. I think if they could get a full ubuntu (or any linux distro) running, it would be a far better experience on Tegra 3. But then you wouldn't have a smartphone...
Why don't you try it out? See how well it works if you try and use it as your daily work computer for a couple of weeks. I know other's have installed pretty much every ARM compiled program for ubuntu, including gnome panel, so it wouldn't hurt to try.
Faux updated his kernal to use zram this is supposed to help speed up webtop once activated
Just thought I'd add that in

Sorry to hear all of you failing with the Lapdock...
In my case it's been a great and convenient alternative. I work as a Network Administrator.
All I need is a browser, internet access (3G or wifi) and LogMeIn account (the free one works great).
I remote into my corporate computers and servers to do most if not all of my work. No need to vpn as before since all resources are available once I get on my corporate computer via LogMeIn. Just install LogMeIn on your main computer, secure it and you are done!
There's actually no need to mod webtop or add any other feature.

I am with you on this. I am a server/desktop engineer and do some of the same tasks you speak of. it works great for a little bit I need. I am running the debian mod and the LXTerm is epic for what I need. I also use Citrix from my phone fullscreen and this also works really well if I am in a pinch and need access to our proprietary junk. I think if the CM webtop ever gets setup, it will be more of a linux box than a slim halfbaked ubuntu that moto uses(im hoping). All in all though, it works for what I need with my other tools. I also found I can use app "VPN Widget" over the 4G connection and I hook straight in to our network no citrix needed. It wont work for the wifi, but that is a limitation of the app. I agree, at times its slow for some flash based things, but really flash is a RAM whore anyhow. I also noticed a quirk with java not being installed, but I may try to tackle that this afternoon
Thansk Rayan, I thought about Logmein but I just think it's kind of slow if you want to do something quick and get out, you know?
LXTerm? What does that do?
I tried installing Cisco Anyconnect VPN and it killed webtop, started again and wondering what other vpn would work like cisco anyconnect client.
I'm a sysadmin, and I have completely replaced my laptop with the ATRIX and its webtop. But we run Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop at work, so I mainly use webtop or the android receiver to connect to my hosted apps and desktops. For that purpose the ATRIX really is the nirvana phone.

Hi everbody,
I've been using my transformer for about a month now and all in all I am very happy with it. It has been rooted and Custom ROMed since day 1 and I got a big amount of apps on it.
As I use the transformer mostly for things I did with my regular computer, it has now come to a point where I find the transformer a bit too less integrated with my android phone.
With my regular PC it's been a one-click-action to send my current browser window to the phone via "Chrome2Phone" and vice versa with "2cloud".
Now with the transformer I have to use a chat app or twitter or anything alike to transfer the links to my phone. It takes a little to much effort to open the chat app, open the message, click the link... you get the point.
But instead of searching for a solution limited to this particular problem, it came to my mind, to ask you, how you "connect" both android devices to get the most out of it:
How do you get the best symbiosis-like experience out of an Android Tablet together with an Android Smartphone?
I'm not talking about having contacts in sync or tethering the phone to the tablet, it's more meant like the above things...
Maybe how you accomplish having apps and their data in sync, easily transfer things back and force from phone/tablet,
make notifications appear on both, have ringtone settings, locks, themes etc synchronized, have the same media on both devices, have a permanent dlna server on one of them to be available at every time, use one device as the input device for the other and so on.
Please think about everything that connects both devices in a smart way. As you can see I'm suffering from a lack of ideas considering how to make most use of my devices.
Is there a way to make an app bought/downloaded from the market on the phone automatically appear on the tablet and vice versa?
I hope we can collect a good collection of input, app recommendations to get more out of our great devices.
I am happily waiting for your answers,
thanks in advance
modmatt
FYI: My setup consists of a Transformer 16gb wifi on the Revolver ROM and a Motorola Defy with CM7.2.

How about a Samsung Galaxy Note? http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxynote/note/index.html?type=find
EDIT: it's a 5" (or 5.3 maybe?) tablet/phone combo. Supposed to be able to fulfill both roles.
I have my tablet using my phone's internet when I'm not at home, I have my contacts and calandar synced on both and have a dropbox account. I also have the app Tablet Remote which isn't as I would like it yet but currently does allow me to control my tablet with my phone and vice versa.
I use my phone for music, texting, reading e-mails/news on the go and my tablet for when I settle down. I'd say they're working pretty well as a combo.
@Mutnat Isn't that a bit too big? I mean 4,65 inch is also enormous but it seems it's getting bigger and bigger!
By using more cloud services (Dropbox, Cashbase, etc) and using Tablet Talk for SMS stuff -- works waaay better than TexTab or Bluetooth SMS.

Likely, yes. Too big for a phone, too small for a tablet. But having never tried one, I can't say for sure.
First of all thank you for all the answers!
The answer from No_u is pretty much what I expected to read
Thanks to Spidey01 I learned about a new cloud service to manage my expenses.
I already read about the shared text stuff beforehand, but unfortunately most of my mobile to mobile communication has shifted to Whatsapp and while there is a solution to run Whatsapp on the tablet, it adds more conflicts, as the tablet left at home with wifi permanently connected catches all those messages I'd rather get on my phone.
Concerning the Samsung Note I go with Mutnat. But it's definetly not an option for me as I prefer to have to separate devices.
One thing I'd like to throw in is Skifta, which is a fairly simple DLNA Server/Client that can be run on any android device. Start it on the phone, start in on the tablet and watch all your phone photos on the big screen.
Still curious what others do, so keep the thread going

Cool thread idea. Hope we get some more responses coming in.
I've been playing with Evernote and it has some sync-between-devices features.
Box.net is great for cloud storage and with esfile explorer, you can view the contents as an on machine folder on android. Gladinet has a free program that lets you mount cloud services as local folders. Add foldersync from the market to android and you can sync cloud folders to all machines.
Not ideal and not the continuous client you're aiming for, but helps keep the folders (pics, documents, movies, etc) in Sync.

on exactly what you want, no, i have never seen and dont know. but if you are willing to make an app that collects this data and sends it to the likes of box.net or dropbox and receive it and open on the other device would be good.
Apps like Colornote, Astrid and Evernote sync so quick notes on the phone end up on the tab and Google Voice works on the tab too. I use that number for text messages.
I have found twonky mobile very good for sharing media between devices.
I recommend Google Chrome as your main browser so that you're synced across all your devices. However it works just on Android 4.0.
I'm using so a GNEX, a linux PC, a Windows PC, a Windows laptop and my Transformer and it makes life a lot more easier.
In addition I recommend Google Music makes the handling with Music over multiple devices much easier.
And last but not least Google Docs for documents.
The only thing which I'm missing is an app which gives me the possibility to sync all my ebooks.

I've been using Aldiko and Aldiko Sync. The pro version has an automatic sync to dropbox. The great thing about Aldiko Sync is it remembers where you left off reading and saves that state, so when you switch devices you can immediately start reading.
!!! updated 12/28/2012: add code to detect and use mobile hotspot to enable sharing among devices !!!
I'd like to invite people to participate an open testing session for app "PeerDeviceNet - sharing thru WiFi and WiFi-Direct".
It runs on android 2.2 and above. It is free at google play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xconns.free.peerdevicenet
I have done tests using Nexus 7, Samsung Tab 2.0, Kindle fire(1gen), Galaxy Vibrant. I'd like more complete coverage of devices and vendors.
It supports 4 kinds of device-device connections:
1. for devices at the same wifi net: start PeerDeviceNet at devices simultaneously will allow them find and connect to each other automatically.
2. for devices which are all wifi direct enabled: from system preferences, you can setup wifi direct group connection; PeerDeviceNet will pick up this group info and connect devices in group automatically.
3. if only one device is wifi direct enabled: you can use PeerDeviceNet to create a softwareAP/hotspot at this device (PeerDeviceNet->Connection settings->Create wifi direct hotspot), other wifi devices can use generated ssid and passphrase to connect.
4. for devices with mobile hotspot, you can use mobile hotspot to connect devices and enable sharing.
It extends android's "share/send" feature to allow sharing of the following data:
1. photos/videos (single or multiple) (gallery), audios(astro, solid-browser, or other browsers)
2. web pages (browsers)
3. contact info(Contacts)
4. pdf, word docs (astro or other file managers)
5. apps (google play)
I'll highly appreciate it if you can spend some time installing the app and try out some of the above scenarios. If you encounter Force Closure, please post your device info, android version, or ROM info.
Thanks!
This works fantastically between all of my devices, ranging from Ginger Bread, Honey Comb, and Jelly Bean.
WiFi hotspot also works very well.
This really is a handy app, something like this should definitely be implemented into base Android. Sharing files between devices that have NFC is a breeze, but legacy devices can be troublesome. This is an excellent solution for both worlds.

looks good
Installed and gave it a test drive.
Works perfectly on our Galaxy S III, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Xperia X8, Packard Bell Liberty Tab G100 and Wildfire S - after adding the devices manually. For some unknown reason they don't see each other, though the local LAN has no restrictions put into place.
Hi, I´ve been testing this between SGN2 N7100 (Stock Rooted) and MyTouch 4g Slide (CM9.1 R8) and it works great (no FC etc.)
I have several questions though:
a) I´d like to buy you a beer. There is a paid version but that one is far behind the free one in updates...
b) chat works great (as long as I have signal. but within a flat its mostly great). Will there be an implementation into the full version?
c) if I buy the full version, will you be updating it?
Thanks! Keep it up!
EDIT: seems to me that your app fights with anyconnect VPN (even if that one is running in background I get FC from anyconnect and superuser permissions asked all time... I´ll look into the behavior a bit closer if I find some time) else everything works good.
EDIT: after reinstall of anyconnect it works flawlessly. Keep it up!

Agree with that. It's quite painful to close an app by going into settings instead of hitting some button from the home interface.
Testing now
Downloaded and tried it..
I have a GS3 that it seems to work on, and a Nook color (the original one) from like 2 years ago running CM7 that it just gives a black screen on. I can use the regular wifi connect from the Nook and connect to the hotspot from your PeerDeviceNet but there's no sharing of data back and forth, unfortunately. If the app worked on both I'm sure it'd be much better, but I don't suspect the older Nooks will be a big percentage of your users.

Thanks for your feedback. The failure to see peer devices in LAN could be related to one issue i fixed in the latest release; please give it a try.
Also PeerDeviceNet's "search and connect" is based on peer-peer "pairing": no one is acting as server and waiting for other clients. All participating peer devices must start search at same time or in same short time period so that they can find each other. If one peer finished its searching when a new peer starts searching, the new one cannot see the one just finished. It is for security reason.

I have been using File Expert to do similar things... perhaps I don't understand this program's full benefits or potential. FE also connects via bluetooth and runs both a web and FTP server.

File expert is a powerful browser with many nice features. PeerDeviceNet is a totally different creature.
As a app, it plainly extends android native "sharing" protocol (send/send_multiple) to connected devices, to allow you share content from one device to another. (As a framework, it provides the components and runtime to support connected mobile apps). It has minimal GUI to support connecting devices and monitoring send/recv sessions. It has strong support for connecting multiple devices, run multiple concurrent send/recv sessions, and running in background.
So normally you will use your favorite apps to browse/view content, and when you want to share the content with another device, you hit "share" button and PeerDeviceNet will be there to help connect to other devices.
So you can use Astro file manager or Solid explorer with PeerDeviceNet to share files across devices similar to file expert.
Also PeerDeviceNet allows you share contact info, web links, or apps from google play to connected devices.

how to close it

Agree with that. It's quite painful to close an app by going into settings instead of hitting some button from the home interface.

There is "shutdown" button for that : "Connection settings" -> "Shutdown". It will shut down all background services and clean up notifications.

Mmm, too many button presses to get there. It would be easier to have a "Shutdown" button in the notification shade. Otherwise well done! I tested sharing files between LG Optimus 3D (p920) and Xperia Mini (st15i) connected on the same LAN. Everything worked fine.
Can one add a function to "tether" a hotspot? but from wifi and not from 3g?
This would be really awsome.

Yo so I got the full version. The lite is good but wanted to buy you a beer... Managed to transfer 4gb of data in few minutes between my and friends Samsung phone (unfortunately in 3 steps because of the data amount limit). Very useful, the chat also works good.
When will we see full version updated with chat and unlimited data transfer?
Thanks

Not sure this will really help. because when connecting to PeeerDeviceNet hotspot, we already use wifi connection, so why not just connect to external wifi router directly?
