Devs! - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I am personally not a dev but returned my xoom for the 10.1. The poor screen quality and size are something I must account for if I am spending $600. The developer pool for the xoom seems quite large and BRD is making some top notch kernels. I really don't want to have to go back to the xoom because of no developer support. I suspect since the best developers I the world all got tablets at I/O we should be good but who all is going to try and develop for the Galaxy tab and what can u possible bring? Thanks

[Q] Should I wait, or should I just buy?

So, A few really good locking tablets came out of CES 2011, The Notion Ink Adam, and the Motorola Xoom. Both run basically identical internal hardware, the only difference between the two being the OS (stock 3.0 vs a heavily modified version of 2.2). I am trying to decide to get the Adam now, or wait a few months, so I have a few very specific questions:
1. Which wifi only version will be cheaper, and how much will each cost.
2. Which OS experience will be better.
3. Which one has the best extra features (Does the Adam have something cooler then a barometer?)
thanks.
Xoom will have the best tablet designed OS, at least u would think. But then again the adam has been in the works for about the past 2 years lol so it should be in good shape.

Just letting you know that the Motorola Xoom was only running a stock version of 3.0 in the videos shown of it. I think the adam will supply you with the best of both worlds with eden and then swipe up and have normal andoird. Also Notion Ink is going to update the Adam to 3.0 when it comes out and they plan to work fast and hard on it to get the update out. Personally i think you would be sacrificing a lot of extra features such as full size usb ports, Pixel Qi display, A lot of community support and other features. Also just because Motorola has 3.0 first doesn't mean its going to be the best. A lot of companies will learn from their mistakes and improve as time goes on. Look at motorola's mobile phones with andoid some people love the ui and some people hate it.
I preorder a Adam but I cancel my order after I saw the xoom at CES. I know the xoom doesn't offer as much of features as Adam but one thing a really hate is companies making their own UI to go but their products. I like my android experience stock. The xoom is going to be a bit more expensive but you get what you pay for.

The Xoom does have a custom ui. Blur. It was running stock 3.0 at ces but it won't be when u get it. And all you have to do is swipe up and you have stock on the Adam. From what i've read the Xoom is shipping with 2.3 and will be upgraded to 3.0 at a later date.

I have a hard time seeing that happen.
at this point they seem close enough in comparison that im going to buy whichever becomes available first since i missed the first preorder of the notion.
I can't wait until the reviews start coming out!
Correction on my part. I guess Xoom is shipping with honeycomb. It was the fact that it won't ship LTE capable but will be upgradable to it later. Sorry for the mistake.

I pre-ordered Adam, my first tablet, and am looking forward to its delivery.

No dude. Do the research. The Xoom is shipping with stock 3.0 but an update is going to be pushed to have Blur integrated.

And the Xoom is going to cost at least $800. Forget that. Adam all the way.

The same link you reference has since being updated. Xoom is not having moto blur, stock 3.0.
UI's are pretty pointless, seeing you can just root and throw a custom rom on it. If the adam gets good reviews and dev support, you can bet a stock ui will be made. If you get a xoom you may even be able to throw eden on there, as long as motorola doesn't lock it tight.
So no fighting guys.

I read that the xoom will be $800, and the cheapest Adam will be $375.
the path is obvious, considering the fact that they have nearly the same internals.

+1 , Motorola makes garbage , I use their products almost every day . Notionink Qi or bust !!!
I pre-ordered a NI Adam and I'm anxiously awaiting it, but I am impressed by the Xoom. The Xoom display is higher resolution, the bezels appear to be much thinner, and it comes stock with more internal memory. It will be interesting to see how the screen quality compares on the NI Adam to the Xoom. On the other hand, the swivel camera of the NI seems pretty cool -- although some find it to be gimicky. And it's still not clear to me how the HDMI works on the Xoom -- is it a mini/micro HDMI, through a dock, or regular HDMI right on the tablet?
If at a later point in time Motorola releases a Wifi only model at a lower price point (even with only 16GB of memory), I might be interested in picking one of those up...
i'm more interested in overall quality of the UI and apps that support tablet. Those who pre-ordered Adam did so with the intension of being upgraded to Honeycomb. Honeycomb is truly where all the tablets need to be at, because the all current Market application are not optimized for tablets. I went with adam because of the PQ. it might not be the cutting edge high end resolution, but my battery life is great. i can go though 12hrs easily...make me wonder if i should do a time lapse photography of how long the battery on the Notion Ink can last. but yes, the XOOM does has its advantages. if only the two can merge some how lol!

I have some doubts that NotionInk will be able to quickly release Honeycomb on their tablets. Unless Google has a major change of opinion -- it doesn't really make sense for Google to allow NotionInk to put Honeycomb on their device (at least with full Google Apps support) if NotionInk will really be including their own "market" on the device (aka Genesis). It will be really interesting to see how Google / NotionInk handle Honeycomb.
Regardless, I'm sure someone here at XDA-devs will get Honeycomb on the Adam pretty quick. It would be nice to see a merge of the NI adam and the Xoom. I'd really just like to see the Adam with really thin bezels (like their prototypes) and with a good quality display (higher resolution, good contrast/colors, and great viewing angle).

For those of you who are thinking about jumping to Xoom

Save your $ or wait for 10.1 Galaxy Tab or be happy with 7"

I spent nearly an hour today playing with a XOOM demo. I was impressed with the snappiness of the hardware, but incredibly unimpressed with Honeycomb.
Maybe its just a matter of being too used to something and not wanting to change.
But it seemed to me many things were out of place, and I couldn't do the things I wanted to do in the manner I have become used to.
I would be happy with a dual core Tab, but I dont need no stinking Honeycomb!
Hmmm. I think honeycomb is pretty cool.

[Q] Why so little action in the Dev forums?

Considering 5000 GTs were handout to developers at I/O I thought there would be a little more development chatter for this device. Is it lack of interest, difficulty with the device, or something else that has limited how much work could be done?
I may be wrong but I think it was more of APP developers rather than Rom developers.

Xoom's been out forever. only 5000 i/o tabs are out there. I think it'll speed up once it's available to the public.
But nevermind the dev section, the entire gtab10.1 section is quite dead. Shouldn't there be more buzz as it gets closer to launch date?

I agree.
Seems to be very little activity here for a product that is going to launch in less than two weeks!?!
Are people fed up with speculating? Posting in other locations? Is there a delay in availability?
I'm not looking for an answer, I just want to know when will the flood gates open?
Seems about right. There was almost no activity in the Thunderbolt section until about 2 or 3 days before release and then it started picking up. Xoom was also slow at first because it was 3G only at first and that kept a bunch of people away, it didnt really start picking up until the WiFi only version was released.
there is very little we can do at this point because the source for the kernal hasnt been released yet either. So we will have tip wait for that too
yeah, when it is released to the public, the kernel source should be released as well. Once that happens, we should start seeing some overclocking and stuff like that

That's because the developers went with the Transformer. It's good tablet with a micro sdcard slot and the price is great. Now we have OC to 1.6 plus honeycomb 3.1. I truely considered moving to the GT10, but no microsd was a turn off and very little dev support so far. I now have a 48gb tablet.
And this completely scared me aware from the GT10:

Once these tablets are actually released to the public, I think there is going to be quite a bit of developer activity.
As for the Transformer vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, I think they both have really similar specs, although the Tab is much thinner. The Tab does have a keyboard dock accessory available that is similar to what comes with the Transformer. It would be nice to have an expansion slot for memory, but I find the 32GB is plenty for a tablet. If I had to go buy one or the other, it would be a tough choice.
My co-worker and I both have the I/O tablet, and neither of us has had the screen issue. While it's obviously an issue with these I/O tablets, I don't really know how many out of the 5000 had the issue, and Samsung did have some time to address the issue before today.
The people that got them were app devs not rom chefs. Public release/sales is what will reveal eventual development.

These were really pre-production run models, and were more of a custom order (more by-hand work, less machines), so they probably didn't have everything hammered out yet. I have a Google I/O tablet and I don't have any issues with mine.

I know you are joking, but as far as I could tell, less than a hundred were sold on eBay. So app devs still have around 4900 of them...
you could give it to every single android dev that there is and it still wouldn't really matter

I had a sylvania tablet for the the longest and manged to get Google Market and froyo on it (unless you had one, you know that was a GREAT feat!) and I was happy with it...unfortunately, circumstances forced me to sell it and when I did he had just gotten rid of his 7' Galaxy Tab, telling me that the simplest tilt would make it change orientation quickly. I was surprised that he chucked it for a sylvania. I plan on either getting a Color Nook next, or try to find a sale on an Acer a500.
Also:ironically, 3 weeks after I sold the Sylvania Tablet, the source code was finally released for it, which means development for it is soon to rise *sigh* real bad time, I guess...
We bought a bunch of sgtabs at work. Love mine from a practical standpoint, but the dev world is a bit behind. I don't think its lacking much, just a reliable cwm and then a complete set of stock files (modem, kernel, rom) and things will be moving. I expect the source will eventually come out. I hear that's what's lacking in the kernel dev dept. Personally I like samsung. When the 4g 10.1 is released I plan on getting that one. Despite the slow update releases, you have to admit, the galaxy s line rocks.

Acer Quality

I don't know if anybody here has heard, but Acer just teased a new tablet, amazing sounding one, to say the least, and I was just wondering everybody's opinion of Acer's build quality, and how well they update their devices currently, and just the overall performance that you get out of this tablet.

Mic isn't bad at all, just not very loud... Some voice chat programs (including skype and gtalk, unfortunately) mess things up, though, giving you weird background noises (not on all devices, though, it works for me). Other than that, the Acer devices are very well worth their money.

I agree 120% with this .. I have a birthday coming in MAY .. Giggles..
if my a500 does not get the support it should.. i might just wait and get a win 8 arm tablet.. and Dual Boot it .but there is always battery issues with windows . we will see what the tech word brings us in 2012.. for now my a 500 meets all the HAVE to have needs.. as if i really NEED a tablet.
Acer always seems to be giving the best bang for your buck, whether it is laptops or not tablets.
One gripe I have against acer is their bloatware. Some may like it but others (like myself) can't stand it.
Also keep in mind that acer is releasing the A200 soon. It's pretty much the same spec wise as the A500 but apparently has no rear facing camera. The pricing looks quite attractive though. I'm still happy with my A500. I actually have no desire to replace it with something newer and better, and I usually drool over the latest and greatest in technology.
I've had an a500 since november and the build quality is great. They have been providing adequate updates so far, and I expect them to provide ICS, but we will see.
Ive been wanting to get a second tablet bc my daughter always has this one and wouldn't hesitate to buy another acer.
Other than build quality ill be looking at development on market app as well as on xda
Gameloft and other game developers choose a500 as a flag ship for development another reason I choose this tablet over Asus, Samsung, and Mototrola. I contacted Gameloft before I picked up a 10.1 tablet around September and asked them what tablet to pick up they told me Acer Iconia because Acer has been the only company that was helping them out the most with developmental needs.. so of course when I went to best buy they were out of a500s and I had 300 bucks from trading in my Droid incredible and I didn't want to wait so I picked up the thrive because of the nice stuff included with it.. but ended up having nothing as far as xda & others so picked up tf101 loved it but it kept slipping out of my hands.. lol so bestbuy finally called me to tell me the Acer was in so I picked it up answer fell in love with it. So that my awesome story and we lived happily ever after
So I will most likely pick up Acer if top devs do aswell.

Thanks for the replies guys! I still have plenty of time to think this over. Acer is definitely a huge choice now though, and I like this community, way friendlier than the original Asus Transformer. Back before the Prime came out, I made a thread like this, asking about Asus and what to expect in the tablets, and it was immediately hostile responses. Terrible, but glad I didn't have enough to buy that Prime, so much bad reports about it. My choices are now this A700, thanks to your responses and some research, and the Asus TF700T.

The Acer bootloader does some checksumming and stuff that makes rooting hard on the newer FWs, but there's a rooting method around that works (downgrading isn't much of a problem). As has been said, just use the search.
Alright, I was just wondering though, different company's products usually have completely different rooting methods than others; I've only ever rooted all my HTC phones, but thanks.

UPDATE: Looks like this is indeed the A700. The folks at The Verge managed to find the new Iconia Tab lounging around in Vegas and discovered that it's packing a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as the aforementioned 1080p display. It's also got Bluetooth support, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI port. As far as release details go, the A700 is said to be landing sometime in the second quarter, but no other specific launch information is known just yet.
