like a ninja i grabbed it so it was under for maybe .5 of a second, i dryed it out over night with toilet paper and a hair dryer, it doesnt turn on, but when i plug it in over usb, windows see;s it and instead of a green light for charging i get a red one.. can my exec be saved?? i love her dearly

the title is thus, as i have dropped my $1200 mobile into a bowl of water on this mobile is stored my day to day running of my company, it is 11pm on a sunday night and i have lost all the infomation i need to pull a pay cheque for the following week, so i belive the title is not retarded i belive it is fair.. lets see what you say when you drop yours in a pool/spa..

Normally when you get a red light it means that your exec is not recognizing that there is a battery inside it.
Perhaps check the battery? Is it seated right after the fall? could water have got inside the battery? Maybe your exec is OK but your batt is dead
I read somewhere that drying with heat ie hair dryer is a big no no - they need to dry naturally.
I shudder at the thought of this happening to me - but i read elsewhere that a guy dropped his in a puddle and it lived - so maybe you'll be lucky too.

cool, im over it, im sure its dead, so all i can do i pull it apart and clean all the boards and hope for the best..
as soon as it hit the water i pulled the battery pack off it, so less than a 3 seconds wet, then with a hairdryer on low.. i heated the case so i belive i got most of the water...
now.. when i plugged i tried to active sync it.. it didnt sync.. but windows found a usb device.. unplugged it.. ready to be pulled apart.. i got my t9 torx screws and switch cleaner anti static gloves/cloths also called into work sick,,.
still not sure about the red light tho.. atleast i got a light i guess.

cool im happy now, after doing an all nighter, and reading the serivce pdf, i pulled it apart blasted it with board cleaner and soaked all the boards.. dryed them by hand.. 6hrs and 14 cups of coffee later its back up :lol:
its up 110% i say 110% because before it took a bath it was looking grubby, bits of crap in the cracks etc etc.. now it looks brand new and works..
now if this should happen to anyone else i took the following steps
as soon as you get your hands back on it.. pull the battery out straight away..
wrap in a clean cleaning towl and gently shake the excess water out of the device
now this part is open to debate
i used a hair dryer to dry the device before i opened it.. on a low heat.. not directly onto the device.. but to heat it..
i rested the device on the heating vent for 4 hrs before cracking it open.
i have to say the confidential service manuel PDF is great thanks guys!!..
after opening the device.. i noticed a few spots of residual crap.. not much, it was easy to clean, few hairy moments put it back together fired it up and now its on the active sync doing its thing, the screen is bright and very clean

I'd just like to point out to anyone reading this that if your Universal is looking a bit on the grubby side, chucking into the cat's water bowl and taking a sickie next day to get it all dried out is probably not the best way to go about cleaning it. You run a fairly good chance of a broken phone, and a scratched nose from your very pissed off cat. :lol:

We have a radio technician as one of the moderators over on MTekk and he recommends Isoprophil Alcohol (from **** Smith) to expel the water. Ironically it was only a couple of days after he told us what to do that I dropped my XdaII down the toilet (flushed fortunately)!
Steps:
1. PULL THE BATTERY! It is current PLUS water which damages the boards.
2. If you have one (and can)... pull the backup battery.
3. Hold the thing tight and spin it around at arms length to spin out as much water as possible.
4. Open the thing in a clean area on some kitchen towel (or whatever) and fairly drown the boards in the Alcohol, this dispels the water. Use a number of orientations to get the stuff everywhere - under components is the important place. Try not to drown the screen itself, any water in there will disperse over a few days.
5. Use some canned compressed air to blow under suspect areas - gently and not too close or condensation forms, it's cold stuff.
6. Allow the device a good few hours to dry in a naturally warm, but not hot, area. Do NOT use a hair dryer, it can overheat the tiny compnents and literally blow them off the board.
7. Cross your fingers/pray/whatever and fire it up.
My backup battery didn't survive as I couldn't remove it and it shorted out, but the device has been pretty good since, all things considered. A few tiny marks in the screen is the only visible sign.
p.s. While I understand your feelings the post title really is crap, I nearly didn't bother to look.
Dear Mofotron, sounds to me like your device not restarting had more to do with your heating it up for 4 hours. Next time go straight for the isopropryl (aka rubbing) alcolhol and flush all the water out that way. :twisted:

Well its been almost a week now and i cant belive my luck, everytime i look at it, i get flashbacks of seeing it sitting in the bottom on the water bowl with the camera flash flickering.
ive had a zillion pda over the years from the palm 1x to the newtons 900/2000/2100 psions etc etc so ive had a fare experience when stuff goes wrong, just this time i think emotion really come over me.
being so late at night at the time 11pmish on a sunday i wasent really in the clearest of minds.. i had to get as much water out of the device as soon as possible, so resting on the a/c vent on 24deg and gently warming it with a hair dryer where the only options i had.. then i started digging in the garage for my old techie kit at like 1am, when i found most of the tools i needed and even borrowed a few off a local off this board!!! as soon as i cracked it open i felt better it was clean water so most of the water stains where easy to remove.
but now it works and thats all i care about.. no visable damage at all, no dead pixels or keys only werid thing is everytime i sync it now the date/time changes to 2-may-2004 3am, but i can live with that.
the sequence of recovery can be explain thusly
retrive device
remove battery and back up battery if you can
try and expell as much water as possible
crack it open
Iso Alcohol everything ( i used isorub its an australian product, from supermarkets, for general household use )
let everything fully dry out before reassembly ( 2-3 days i covered my boards in an anti static cloth for a day and a bit )
carefully put everything back together the video cable cant be bent at a certain point so you only have like 1-2mm or wire to fish thru the connectors.. all should be well if not, im sorry get another device and use it as parts.

On the topic of thread titles, how does one become part of the Mod team? I see a lot of posts here relating to the title, and I would have been happy to change it =)
I had it less than a week. I have NEVER gotten a phone wet in my life (45 years old.) and I had this one for less than a week and my dog rammed into me (Big dog.) while I was standing near the sink, texting, and bloop, it goes into the soapy water. I got it out with moments and popped the battery out.
I must mention that when I pulled it out of the water it was vibrating constantly and the LED's on the back were blinking quickly.
It was soapy water with dirty dish crap in it. I got on line and read immediately. I followed the directions to a T. Soaked it in distilled water for about an hour and then let it dry by the exhaust port on the back of my computer.
48+ hours passed and I attempted to turn it on. Insert the battery, nothing bad happened. Press the power button, after a second or two it vibrated and the screen lit up with the logo and my heart was happy. It booted into Windows and I was very relieved.
It was short lived. There are some issues.
There is obviously moisture trapped under the screen. There are dark spots, light spots, swirls, etc. You can't see it too much in Manila but when the screen turns a solid, lighter color (Like in Task Manager or Opera Favorites for example.) you can see the swirls.
People can hear me clearly when I speak but I can barely, oh so barely, hear them talking to me. The volume in the ear speaker is very muted.
The rear speaker, for music, nav directions, speaker phone, etc. is nothing but crackles. I mean you can hear and deduce what's coming out but it's buzzy and crackly the whole time. Just awful sounding.
The touch screen has some diminished sensitivity, maybe 10% less reactive all over and up to 75% less reactive near the edges.
It's so bad that I'm using some piece of crap back-up flip phone from eons gone by. I pray nobody calls me in public so I don't have to pull this piece of crap out. It's that bad. It's magenta too. (That's the manliest word I can think of for pink.)
In your opinion, do you think my HD2 will improve over time? Another full day has passed, back in front of the heating vent. The screen has changed some. I can't say that it really got better but it has changed. Some of the solid water lines that were there are now muddled. Perhaps a 5% improvement. The speakers show no sign of improving nor has the screen sensitivity, they are the same crap as yesterday.
The speakers are really the deal killer, if I can't hear people then it really isn't a phone.
Everything else on it seems to work fine. GPS, Wifi, data, etc.
Should I give up on it, dump it for cheap, and move on to something else like the Nexus One maybe, or wait until T-Mobile US gets their HD2s? (Is there a release date for the HD2 in USA yet?)
What is your opinion, hopefully based on experience on this?
I lost my job last week (Business closed.) and honestly, I'm more sad about this phone than I am losing my job. I know that's twisted but I loved using this phone. Loved everything about it. I miss it dearly, even though I know it's just a phone.

Anyway I'm sorry for your loss.. maybe you can get a friend's insurance cover it.. (figuring your dog has none). Also dry it some more..

Well it was longer than a half second. It slipped under some dishes and I fumbled awkwardly a little bit trying to get it. I would say total submerge time was probably 6-7 seconds. It looked very wet to me. When I popped the battery there was definitely soapy, dirty dishwater coming coming out of the insides. Maybe I did more damage by soaking it in distilled water but it was overwhelmingly recommended on the internet when I searched for wet phone.
Edit: I'm in the US and this phone was not released here. Is there a way to have insurance on a phone not purchased through typical channels?

Regarding the speakers, you are probably SOL. I think you'd be surprised what you can sell a busted phone for on ebay.

This actually makes me very nervous because it reminds me that personal digital (the aussie dealer for the T9193) didn't accept AMEX, so I used my normal Visa... sigh. Off to buy a warranty.

That's a good idea, I'll give that recalibration a shot.
Are the speakers made of paper? Did they get wet and become permanently damaged? I've since read dozens and dozens of stories on the net about wet cell phones and I've heard nobody mention anything about permanent damage to the speakers. Does the HD2 have some kind of unique sound system which might make it more susceptible to water damage?

Honestly, if I can get the dang sound to work half way decently I will be able to live with it for a while. I blew some compressed air (Not high pressure but a decent blast.) into the grills but no difference on either. I can't imagine what's in there, other than a torn speaker, which could make the cones not move efficiently. Maybe some kind of corrosion in the magnetic motor behind the cone possibly.

remember when you search for solutions online to check the date when it was posted.. that distilled water trick maybe worked for nokia 3310's.
Also be carefull with air when it's wet.. if it is paper, I don't know.. but imagin what happens to it if it is and it's still wet.... I'd carefully use a hair dryer... and leave it dry for a week, not 48 hours..
I've seen a Dutch insurance company that insures your phone online without questions.. you just pay a fee for stepping in (€25). There must be something like that in the states. I don't know if you have home insurance, but some companies nowadays also cover mobile phones and laptops, even when your on the move.

I do have home owner's and that's an excellent idea. I will call and pick their brains first thing in the morning.
You may want to query one of the parts replacement sites to see if they can get you a speaker. Something like truesupplier.com or cnn.cn (Just as a reference, I'm not vouching for the legitimacy of these sites.)

the non capacitive touch screens are indestructable compared to the HD2's.. anyway.. I would have tried without first..
I know my comment didn't help much after the damage was done but it just seemed like the last thing I would do.. that's all. what's done is done. Let's just see if you're insured..!

Cover the phone in a cloth and sit it on top of your television for a week.
Don't forget, you let the phone sit in distilled water for an hour, that's plenty of time for water to soak deep down into the nooks and crannys.

That's pretty much what I'm doing now. Only difference is that it's sitting behind the exhaust vent on my computer which seems to be a nice temperature for drying without being too hot. My TV is a plasma and has no flat surface on top.

HARD RESET <<<< & don't use your phone with battery cover for few days so water evaporate
at this point i would be wondering if soaking it in ethanol / alchohol would do it some good. my reasoning:
-Alchohol / ethanol / similar is a water dispersant and evaporates very quickly
- the liquid is much thinner than water so will get into every nook and cranny
- its wort a go since it seems like its a bit buggered anyway
From what I've read the 99% denatured alcohol rescue is split between two camps, both far on one side of the option or the other.
I guess getting it under the screen might help but I can't see what it could do for the speakers.
If I do this, and I'm very hesitant to do it, it will be a total last ditch effort when I've given up all other hope.
I think some long term drying is in order, and maybe a couple of fingers crossed.

he is better using >>>> the spray for cleaning microcircuits, I have try it in the past and it works very well.
Take out the btery and spry it n all parts. It will dry by it self in few minutes time

Do you happen to have a product name you can recommend?
cover it with newspaper, then go get uncook rice, cover the phone & newspaper with rice, leave it for a week for completely dry.
Or have a lot of dry silicagel, you can use it as well. If what you have is those type usually found in dry food, make sure it dry otherwise it won't observe water. If it brand new like those found in glossary store, then just put phone in big zip lock bag with the silicagel (or something where air cannot go in or out).
Just remember, don't heat it (like hair dryer, hot air, etc) as that will speed up the oxidize and have rust on small parts in your phone.

I cracked my screen pretty badly this weekend and am planning on ordering the replacement parts this week (debating the just glass or the new glass/LCD options). But I've noticed since then(last 2 days) the battery has drained pretty fast. Normally I get 2 days from a charge, today I pulled the phone off the cord at 8am and now at 3pm I got a pop-up saying <10%. The phone has only sat on the desk. No calls, no emails, no text, no web surfing.
Maybe the screen is getting mixed signals, being cracked and all.
Any ideas?

I am not really knowledgable about the exact interworkings of the HD2's internal hardware. But I do think it would be a pretty fair assumption that the cracked screen could be the cause of the sudden battery drain. You know your HD2 better than anybody else would as far as daily functionality of your HD2. So if it was not having a battery drain before you cracked the screen. And now you do after and this is the singular change in the state of the HD2 be it hardware wise or software wise. Then logic would say that is it.
Have you thought any about it might not just be the screen that is cracked. What about the internals. How hard did it hit, and how hard was the object the phone hit????
One last thing, be nice to your HD2, it is nice to you. ha ha ha....... But really take it easy on the hardware.
I trimmed the tape on it down to only covering the glass (finger protection mostly) and got it off the edges and out from around the back. This seemed to really help. I've noticed from the beginning of owning this phone that there are some sensitive spots on the sides that when pressure is applied the phone acts like a button was pressed etc. So I must have been causing this. Even with the screen off it was still reading a button push and having to process this action, using power.
I need to find a hard shell for the phone. The rubber thing that came with it is useless as it sticks in your pocket, I need smooth hard plastic I guess. The phone slipped out of my hand as I was getting out of the car and landed face down. Pure accident.

I too have notice the same thing about my HD2 that ertain areas around the edge are sensative, like you said almost like you were pressing abutton of some sort. I am glad you figured something out that helps stop the battery drain. I know that can be agrevating as hell.
If you have a T-Mobile HD2 like I do you could try the Body Glove. I have one on mine, it is a two piece hard plastic cover you HD2 slides up in. ig has a pull out kickstand on the back also, I really like it. It has help protect my HD2 several times when I accidently dropped it out of my hand. I do warn you though after having it on your HD2 for awhile it will make to little scuff marks of the clear coat on your battery cover. Also I have notice I have to make sure I have a ferm grip on it when I pick it up cause the plastic cover is a little slick not like when gou have the rubber case on it. I attached two photos of the cover, oh and you can buy it from T-mobile store or from the T-Mobile website. I suggest website it is cheaper there.

Is there anyone in here who's experiencing hangings when "bending" the Leo/HD2?
Strange question? YES!
But the thing is... I keep my mobile phone in the pocket of my jeans. They're not that tight, but when I sit down they're stretching in the part where the pockets are. That makes the phone "bend"/twist from the force which also causes it to hang almost every time. The only way to start it again is to remove the battery pack. I've tried "bending" it carefully outside of the pocket to summon the problem which also is done with ease.
Is it the Leo/HD2 that is fragile in general or is it my phone that's got so many bends and twists that it's broken?

The thing is my phone has got a few hits when my daughter beat the crap out of Talking Tom. That's why I'm checking around to see if it's just me... so far it seems so

My screen has several cracks and mine now flexes quite a bit, especially as you say when you sit with it in your pocket. I'd hazard a guess that you have either separated the glass from the screen, or a mounting screw has come loose. All the stiffness is in the glass and screen.
quick question....did u leave it in the side pockets or the back pockets? because i believe hd2 arent that fragile. i always put it in my back pocket and never had a scratch or bending of phone.

hehe, whats crazy is the sinking feeling when you hear it creak in your pocket, and the glass grinding together and squeaks a little. (I dropped it, about five long cracks from one corner)
One of these days ill hear it snap, im sure.

yikes, that would scare me. I'm rough on my phone. I accidentally stepped on it when i dropped it on a gravel road once (ahh the beauty of alcohol), but I had to go down on my motorcycle with it in my pocket to make it crack. But I did right that time, nice little spiderweb. Bought a replacement screen, broke a ribbon cable taking the broken screen off. Got up and threw it in the trash.
WOW, you all are crazy... But a quick solution.
Take better care of your phone really thats all that needs to be said here.

I have it in my side pocket, right one to be exact

I got my phone on the 12/26 and on 12/30 I noticed that it's bent rather severely at the power button and going up.. I was able to bend it back mostly but the frame now has a small crease at the power button Not sure how it happened. Must be that the dual sim port weakened the frame. It seems to take less effort than in the Iphone 6 plus videos. Guys, be careful with your phones.
I am going to contact Sony about a replacement or repair since it only the frame that is affected. I'm not holding my breath since it's an international phone and not sold in the States.
Such a shame, I really love the phone.

Do you put the phone in your pants/jeans pockets? I carry it in my pockets a lot (not with jeans), but haven't had any issues. It could be a D6633 thing.
I put it in my back pocket. I usually do remove before sitting. I have been doing the back pocket thing with all my Samsung phones (G2, G3, Note2) and my OnePlusOne without issue. I don't want to make a big deal out it with a Youtube video, just want it fixed and change my habit.

It only takes one time sitting on it to bend... Most of those other phones are plastic, and will actually bend back into their previous state. Where as the metal band around the Z3 is malleable and will still where you bend it(If bent enough)
I don't think there's anything to be fixed, it's just a draw back of making phones so big and thing.
I keep mine in my front jeans pocket all of the time, although I do adjust it or take it out if I feel it's tight.

I was able to bend the phone back and got scary pop as the glass reseated itself. The phone is now perfectly straight against a straight edge. Now the only complaint is the tiny crease at the power button. Hardly noticeable but I can feel it and I know its there. Looks like a bumper case or TPU case are in my future in order to hide the crease.
I will make sure my next phone has a strong mid plate like my Samsungs, OPO and OPPO have.
Just noticed that mine is bent too. Never got it in my pockets. Only in my jacket where there is enough space.
Just put the phone on a real flat surface and the bottom right end lifts slightly higher. Quite disappointed at that point for a phone at such a price, this shouldn't be happening!
I always put my phone on the front right pocket of my jeans and I have never bent any phone regardless of size (max is 5.2 inch) I'd say its more comfortable to put it in the front than in the back pockets. Never have to worry about sitting on it and quick access to it.
I don't like how news site emphasize "bendgate" and trying to make the phone and brand look bad. Every phone can bend depending on where it is placed.
*Of course assuming that you are using a case. I'm using a case for the Xperia Z3 and protects it fine from this bendgate phenomenon.
No bends on my Tmo Z3. I've had mine since late October, and it's an many pants pockets and much sitting.
Still no reply from Sony, it is the Holidays though.

Me too.
And it fall down three times without any case for the phone. And nothing happen, no scratch, damage. Sometimes i put the phone out of the case.
I agree with you, about the news.
I have the 6603 and while on holiday it has bent in exactly the same way as in OPs post, though I keep mine in the front pocket. Pretty disappointed as it was in a case too, have never had another phone bend. Will be contacting my phone provider after the weekend to try get it replaced, as the bluetooth doesn't work either (never did)... Shame about the build quality on these first batches of phones.

No, I was more concerned with straightening the phone. Next time I bend it, I'll take pics. I'm sure it will bend again.

My phone also only 1 month old has bent and blue tooth not working. This phone is not fit for purpose if so many phones are bending. The frame is not strong enough for the size of the phone! will be contaxcting Sony and Kogan for remedy otherwise Dept of Consumer affairs. Plenty of evidence here this is a fault with this phone.

I have my phone since Ocotber, always rides in my front pocket. No bending so far. It's not the phone, it's the user.
It must be a joke. Can't see how it is possible to bend this phone. Unless you do it on purpose of course.
Its definitely possible, the thinner phones get this becomes a bigger problem as the side "wall" for lack of a better word is important in resisting bending in addition to the internal frame. The front pocket can also create a a significant enough force when walking to bend it people just don't realize this.
Plastic is actually much better than metal for such thin phones as it bounces back to form. This a price to pay when people perceive metal (in this case aluminium which bends easily) as somehow being "premium" over plastics. At least people aren't asking for granite phones lol.
I have the D6603, Today i found it bent and i attempted to bend it back and the metal frame (near the dock connection) just popped out, (Attached an image) Luckily i contacted the retailer and they said they'll replace/refund/repair it
Wow, you are lucky, I would not expect them to that. I have been in situations where I slept on the phone and tight jeans, so far no issues though I was worried.
