[Q] Bending the Leo/HD2 - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi there,
Is there anyone in here who's experiencing hangings when "bending" the Leo/HD2?
Strange question? YES!
But the thing is... I keep my mobile phone in the pocket of my jeans. They're not that tight, but when I sit down they're stretching in the part where the pockets are. That makes the phone "bend"/twist from the force which also causes it to hang almost every time. The only way to start it again is to remove the battery pack. I've tried "bending" it carefully outside of the pocket to summon the problem which also is done with ease.
Is it the Leo/HD2 that is fragile in general or is it my phone that's got so many bends and twists that it's broken?
Thanks for your input.

I have my phone in my pocket as well but have never had this problem. My advice would be... don't leave phone in pocket
On a side note, how cool would it be to have a flexi-phone?!?

The thing is my phone has got a few hits when my daughter beat the crap out of Talking Tom. That's why I'm checking around to see if it's just me... so far it seems so
Flexi-phone would have solved it. Great idea!

My screen has several cracks and mine now flexes quite a bit, especially as you say when you sit with it in your pocket. I'd hazard a guess that you have either separated the glass from the screen, or a mounting screw has come loose. All the stiffness is in the glass and screen.

quick question....did u leave it in the side pockets or the back pockets? because i believe hd2 arent that fragile. i always put it in my back pocket and never had a scratch or bending of phone.

I've never had my phone flex at all. That's crazy

hehe, whats crazy is the sinking feeling when you hear it creak in your pocket, and the glass grinding together and squeaks a little. (I dropped it, about five long cracks from one corner)
One of these days ill hear it snap, im sure.

yikes, that would scare me. I'm rough on my phone. I accidentally stepped on it when i dropped it on a gravel road once (ahh the beauty of alcohol), but I had to go down on my motorcycle with it in my pocket to make it crack. But I did right that time, nice little spiderweb. Bought a replacement screen, broke a ribbon cable taking the broken screen off. Got up and threw it in the trash.

WOW, you all are crazy... But a quick solution.
Take better care of your phone really thats all that needs to be said here.

who has Drop it

Hey who has drop there 8125.. i kinda did from a foot off the ground.. It was soooo perfect. Now im mad. I wouldnt consider the scratch big but i like my stuff pretty much perfect. What about u guys?
Dropped mine from the second floor down the stairs. Broke completely and I'm pretty upset now
MAN
I feel sooooo bad.. and i thought i had it bad.. did u get a replacement or another phone?
I will file a case with my insurance company - I doubt that they will cover it, but you never know...
Was chasing the FedEx truck, don't ask why. I had it in the case that came with the 8125 which leaves the corners exposed. It unclipped and dropped on the cement sidewalk, the corner near the volume control is mashed in and two other corners are pretty scraped up the screen is fine because it was inside the case.
Ironically, if that FedEx guy didn't make me chase after him I would've gotten my activecase and anti-glare screen protector.
Thankfully after putting on the activecase not so much of the scratches can be noticed or felt.
i actually dropped mine for the first time today... i was about to sit down and i was putting it back into its case, and it fell (maybe 2 feet)... but the case cushened the blow. good thing
Wow
Man i drop my today UNPROTECTED.. man i cant believe.. it was soo clean and now it is.. Im soo mad also
Several times....
no major malfunctions yet, but lots of chipped paint.
I dropped mine in the street getting out of a car because I had it in my hooded sweater pocket like a big dummy. It sounded like it broke in half or something (found out later it was the stylus ejecting), but nothing really happened to it besides a few corner scratches that aren't noticeable.
Sorry to hear about your drops and losses!
Does the Activecase for the 8125 have a flip cover for the screen?
Yeah the activecase covers both the back and the front so you can slide it out without altering the case. It uses hinges to cling on but I figured if I used the hinges it would loosen the front from the back so I cut off the hinges and used double sided tape to stick it to my phone.
Droped 2 time by my baby. . . she really likes my wizard. but my baby is more important than my wizard hehe.. rather have a lot of scratch on my wizard than a tiny one on my baby girl

I don't use the keyboard much on my 8125, so that part of the case that allows for keyboard use would not influence my decision to purchase or not.
What I'm really after is to know if there is a flip lid that covers the screen, and whether or not it can be opened without disengaging the entire front portion of the case from the front half of the phone.
Thanks again!
Oop
i used the carrying case that came with it but i might stich some cousion stuff where the case leaves the edges exposed
had my 8125 for about 2 weeks then when i was getting out my 66 bronco i forgot i had it in my lap and it took a dive for the pavement luckly no major defects from it just a few chips outa the keyboard side.

man im sorry to hear that.. ugh i hate that i droped my phone but i kinda gotten over it
While closing the door it slipped and landed right on the topleft corner. Result was a crack in the screen topfleft to right bottom.
Of course this wasn't covered by warrenty and it cost me about 150 euros to get it fixed.
So when you drop it, try to drop it so it fall flat on it back
/Cacti
OUCH!
wow that is expenisve.. i tho i dont kno how much that is in US dollers i know that expensive.. i dont even think i could pay for that just to be replaced
Not only did i drop it, but kicked it just after... i freakin' drop-kicked it!
Was walking under a busy Moscow street and had my hands full when I received a call. I tried to answer the call while still walking and in true dork form, fumbled, dropping it as my foot came forward at the same moment and ended up kicking it another few meters.
upper corners were a little scratched, and the 2GB SD fell out, but I picked them both up, wiped it off, inserted the SD back in and it works great.
guess i lucked out!
Dropped mine multiple times. Stock case was useless. The alum case I have from BoxWave is equally useless. Damn thing flies open way too easy. And, my 8125 has therefore taken several spills.
So far, my personal best was when I essentially threw it about 7 or 8 feet from a height of about 3 1/2 feet onto concrete. It "shattered" in that the stylus came out, battery, sim, and all that came out. A couple of more dents and scratches in the case, but the display itself is fine. I do have a screen protector on it, and I quesiton whether or not that's the only reason the screen has been saved.
Other than that, mostly about 1 1/2 feet drops, generally falling out of the aluminum case while getting out of the chair at my office.
Rugged little device, that's for sure..

What ever you do don't drop it!!

My son woke me up in the morning i bent over to look at the time knocking my HD2 all of 2 foot onto my laminate flooring..... screen has completely shattered!! this is one fragile device. Thankfully its insured through Vodafone I took it into the store today, but there doubtfull it can be fixed as it also chipped a piece of casing off as well. Now I'm a bit concerned they have no stock of the HD2 . I'll be gutted if thats the case.
Another reason why I wont be having kids...
Hi, I rang Vodafone today and I think they have a few replacement unitsleft, as they said they'd bee shipping me out one in the next few days... see my thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611939
I hope its actually a HD2 they are shipping me and not another phone, fingers crossed!!
The direct replacement number they gave me was 08448540430 but I'm not sure if thats the right one for insurance but you can try it. Let me know how you get on
Sounds promising, thanks! If I get another i'll be wrapping it in cotton wool...

This is quite worrying. I mean sure dropping a phone would not be considered "normal use" but surely it should have been taken into account when designing the unit that phones do get dropped?
My Touch Pro has hit the deck on more than one occassion and it's unscathed!! I'm not the careless type either, I look after my tech but these things happen. It's worrying that a 2ft drop onto laminate could cause the screen to completely shatter.
Strange, dropped mine 6 feet onto a tile floor yesterday, i was like nooooooooooooo!, picked it up, still perfect, must have been lucky.

Your Touch Pro also happens to have a plastic screen. Sounds stupid comparing it to a thin glass screen, doesn't it? You make it sounds like it's the coming of the apocalypse because the HD2 is the first of its kind to have screen cracked when dropped. Take a look at iphones, droids, hero, etc...
People here freaked out because it's probably the first capacitive screen they've owned and continue using it like it's plastic like past HTC phones. Be extra careful. Period.
You were extremely fortunate, either that or I was extremely unfortunate. Ive been reading about the HD2 apparently theres alot of internal stress so although the screen is pretty much scratch proof its not so good on when struck. Very annoying as Ive been very protective of this phone
its actually pretty tough

I'm not saying your wrong, but things like "drops" should be taken into account at the design stage of a device such as a phone.
Your car keys are not meant to be dropped, but they'd survive wouldnt they? A mobile phone, by it's very nature, is prone to a drop or two over it's lifetime...
Your reply is very condescending and poorly thought out.
Seems like the phone is a bit like an egg. Squeeze an egg from the top and it won't break. Squeeze from the middle however...! So some drop the phone and it shocks the "middle" while others drop it and it shocks the "top". Some are lucky, some are not. Hey ho, them's the breaks! (No pun intended)

I recall at list 7 users in this forum having broken screen and so on, so it seems to be taken in consideration >> a hard protector box be highly recommended.

Seriously. I let it drop like every god damned day from the 24th to the 1rst, and it's still pristine. no scratches. I even let it drop from my height (6 feet 2) while drunk and playing with a girl who tried to snap it out of my hands, my heart skipped a beat, but when I took it up, again, no scratches. I was like, God exists!
But neverthless, I ordered three different cases. I don't want to run out of luck.
Dropped mine from 1,5 meter on a stone floor, nothing happend....
Thank god!
I've dropped my HD2 more than 6 times already (usually from holding height, so about 4 feet) sometimes with the leather case sometimes without. It is still in perfect condition. Come to think about it, it think it always landed on the ends so that may prove the egg theory. I do not have it insured so I'm not gonna go prove that theory just yet
It really must depend the way it lands, but trust me 2 foot (bedside cabinet height) was enough to write off my new love lol. Or maybe someone didnt build mine and the other poor bast*rds phones right... maybe forgot to do up a few screws haha, but anyway all I'll say is be damned careful and take out that insurance it really is worth it.

Condescending? Poorly thought out? Like how you're comparing dropping your brick of a phone with plastic screen to a thin one with GLASS screen? LOL. I'm not even going to vilify that judging by your lack of common sense and logic.
Of course it's taken into account during the construction of the phone. Some people enjoy the finer things in life, and that means sacrificing some structural integrity for form factor. I'm sure being as naive as you are, you probably didn't think about that. You see, Syphon, the HD2 is like a Ferrari F430 comparing to your Civic of a Touch Pro. It has carbon fiber exterior mated with 490 ponies strapped to the back, and like any other cars out there, it has been crash-tested. It's expensive because of lightweight material, because of exquisite engine design, and because of engineering. All this to ensure that the driver gets the most thrill and satisfaction out of driving it. These cars are well maintained and pampered due to the common sense that these owners have and to be able to understand that these toys are expensive and you'd take the utmost precaution to enjoy them. Now the majority of the people who own these cars are smart, successful people who take pride in taking care of their valuables...the kind of stuff that you lack.
Your Civic, on the other hand, are a dime a dozen...and are the stuff that junkyards are made of. They're cheap, easily to get thrown around and can be easily fixed. The fact of the matter is, your civic is nothing more but a rolling scrap metal that attracts door dings, bird poo, and a variety of things that happen to a car with as much of a presence as a piece of rock. In case you're still clueless, your touch pro should never be compared to an HD2. It's a giant slab of plastic that doubles as a door stop.
Now, I was going to stop but you made another grand of a post. In case you haven't noticed, most car key FOBs are PLASTIC. Yep. Quite a shocker huh? You know what else is a shocker? It doesn't have a screen. All it is, is a small PCB board with a round battery attached to it. Though I wouldnt expect you to understand that based on your inane inability to understand what plastic is and what glass is. I suggest having a running start and smashing your head through your car window so you'll know what the difference is.
....I should aso tell you to put on a helmet to protect that smart brain of yours.

OK. How fragile is the screen, really?

Hello everyone.
I got my HD2 a couple of weeks ago and as usual with new toys, am still taking some extra care with it. I had a Touch HD before that withstood quite a few bumps and two small drops. I saw people carying iPhones in pants pockets, back and front. Given that HD2 screen is significantly larger, how fragile is it, really? I usually carry my phones in jacket pocket, screen towards the body, without any case or sleeve. Do I need to take so much care for it or is it actually more resilient than it seems? Yes, I've seen the threads with broken screens. Anything can break, given enough force.
Any serious feedback is welcomed. Thanks.
Cheers, R
Well I have had mine since it was released in the UK and have had it in my right hand side front pocket in my jeans/trousers etc, sat on floors etc and all sorts and nothing has ever happened to it at all. Its a pretty tough screen I think, as long as when its in you pocket its not at an odd angle, I cant see any problems keeping it in there. I certainly have no problems.
Scratch test
There is a YouTube video of a scratch test of the screen of an HD2, its in foreign but gives a good idea of its screen tolerances (those of a nervous disposition may wish to look away towards the end)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcEaehKWr2s
Hmm I can only speak for myself and my HD2... but my screen has 2 (really small) scratches..
I think these are from a keychain or maybe a lighter in my pocket. I don't really know where the came from - but not from dropping it.
I would recommend to use a (thin - not that thick vikuti) foil to protect it against scratches.
--> Question: What would you recomment regarding a foil to cover the screen? I bought 1 Vikuti foil and really disliked it - it is sooo thick
Edit: I think the knife in the video would be able to scratch the screen... only a matter of right angle an pressure
I dropped mine on new years eve - drunk and the only thing i noticed the following day was that i had lost the backplate lol
Someone on here very kindly gave me a replacement.
Other than that - no scratches so far
Had mine three weeks, using front trouser pocket though I am very conscious of checking the pocket for keys etc first.
I have a full body invisibleSHIELD skin, and i'm extremely happy with it.
I've knocked it a few times on the edge of tables and chairs, once on the metal hand grip on a bus seat, and theres not a mark on it anywhere.
I have a screen protector that covers the entire screen, and carry the phone in my pants pocket in the leather case that came with the phone (I'm waiting on a holster from eBay).
The screen is in perfect condition, however, I did scuff the corner of the HD2 by dropping it (in its leather case) as I went to put it in my pocket coming out of a movie theatre...dropped onto cement.
: /
I use a screen protector and have a very nice silicone case for it that fits very snug, but I'm just being careful.
I believe that common sense is enough to keep this device from being damaged. As you can see from the linked video above, the screen is very resiliant, but it's not scratchproof. Also, why on earth anyone would put it in the back pocket of their trousers and sit down is totally beyone me, but people have done it (and probably still do), but they end up on here asking how to fix their damaged screen. (My advice to them is to hook up a flex capacitor to their car, drive at 88mph, go back in time to before they broke it and slap themselves round the face and say "STOP BEING SILLY!!!")
It's tough, but not unbreakable. Just treat it with respect, look after it sensibly, and DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR BACK TROUSER POCKET OR FRONT SHIRT POCKET!!!
As the meerkats say... simples

Yes, and even moreso if you have a hernia! Good to see that xda is also responsible for good health advice too
I can't wait for mine to arrive next week. I can tell you from experience that the IPHONE has cracked 3 times in pocket when I put too much pressure. Apple does replace them on a regular basis. They allow for what they call a hairline. If it spiders they won't replace it but a hairline is within their tolerance and is common enough for them to replace it without question. That is how I ended up with a new replacement recently. I wasn't using the phone much but my HD battery died on site so I put the time into the IPHONE to use it. I squatted with the IPHONE in backpocket and CRACK. I probably should check my beltline while I am at it..
They replaced it and that worked out anyways as I am going to sell it. Keep my HD and Bold as backup.
The glass looks pretty solid and as many people reported it a good solid piece of hardware.
i keep mine in the case it comes with when i am carrying it around... any pocket really.
i just make sure i dont sit on it! lol
the screen itself is extremely resilient when it is out and in use.
I leave mine lying around all of the time out of the case and it still looks brand new.
I dont use any screen protector.
screen strength
being a kapasitive screen it uses a propper glass cover instead of ****ty plexi glass or resistive glass as most phones use, this naturally gives it a more scratch proof serface but makes it less resilient to actually breaking. like one guy said it all has to do with angle and preshure.. and abit of bad luck when it comes to screen protection i recomend invisiShield. they are nice and thin, VERY clear plastic so it doesnt disturb teh screen quality. and last but not least, the fabric its made of is teh same as teh stuff that they use to cover helicopter rotor blades with, so it comes with a 30 year waranty.
Thanks for all the replies so far. I suspected as much, but it sure is nice to hear other people's experience

How many times have you dropped your N1?

Just curious too see how many times people have dropped their phones.
Mine has fallen off my desk a couple times but nothing serious, no damage done at all.
None, but close a few times before I got the Seidio case!
none...try to keep the phone nice and clean.got my zagg screen protection the same day with my phone.so..unbox the phone and first thing i do was straight to install the screen protector(i got the whole body protector).and i don't even charge the battery or turn the phone first.
dropped it a lot. on the street and in the water. still works great. this thing is build to last. although i have a bunch of scratches and dents. LOL poor me!

1 time.
Hopefully never again. Luckily it was in the sleeve and from my back pocket to the floor.
Not yet. Almost dropped it in Costco onto the concrete floor once... luckily quick reflexes caught it.
My wife dropped hers several times really hard on rough surfaces. The screen is fine, one corner got dented inward, and 3 side scratches, on the volume key side, that show some shiny metal layer. Due to the dark colour, you still have to look for the damage to see it.
I dropped it face first into gravely gravel. =( Battery cover popped off, I stood there for like five seconds with my face = O
The chin has a gouge in it, and on the right side of the screen the metal has small gouges too.

Same exact scenario happened to me. Luckily the floor had carpet too. That sleeve is almost more slippery than the actual phone!
I've only dropped my G1 just ONE TIME in the 15 months I had it.
Bricked a few times learning about root, ADB commands, and flashing many roms.
My N1?
NEVER!
I'm even scurred to put it in my pocket with a little loose change, even with the silicone casing + screen protector!
Usually I'd never drop it, but I was doing something stupid and forgot it was in my shirt pocket and it smashed on the ground and the lid and battery flew off and the top insides came unclipped and loose - couldn't get the cover back on and I was really gutted - while my so called friends laughed their heads off. managed to get everything back in place but it has a scratch on the bottom and a few tiny dents on the side. owell. nobody wants to buy it now!
None thank GOD. the phone is so good i am scared to use it.. and the surface of the phone is not that grippy like google say.
Once, Put luckily it was in the sleeve and was only from where i was holding it to the ground, made a cute noise but not a scratch or ding on it! Hoping to never experience that again though

N1 got dropped, do I need anger management?

The screen impacted the floor squarely and the phone was naked. Bottom panel popped out of alignment, though thankfully it could be popped back in. There's a new scratch at the bottom of the front. FFFFUUUUUUUU.
I mean sure, it still functions as normal--and to this I must testify for HTC's build quality--but ****ing **** ****. It'd be one thing if I was the one clumsy enough to drop it, but it's a co-worker's clumsiness which sent me into quite a rage. I was this close to demanding that he either buys me a replacement or gives me the money to buy one, because honestly ****ing **** is it so hard to be mindful of other people's belongings, especially expensive belongings?
God.
Yea, it really sucks to drop a naked N1. I remember walking out of the gym once and I pulled my keys out of my pocket. My N1 decided to go along for the ride and jumped right out and landed on the ground. I was so pissed at myself. After noticing the scratches, I cried a little inside. But it's okay though, I just remind myself that it's just a phone and I will be getting a new one in less than a year.
I've dropped my nexus so many times I've lost count.
It really does suck though, it's so damn expensive that it's almost a part of you.
I have dropped my phone also, not a N1 but a Droid and the first time i almost wanted to cut off my clumsy hands, but as DOHCtor says i remember it's just a phone and if by any chance was broken i could do nothing but buy another (Although at that moment i didn't have enough money to do it right away).
Fortunately my droid keeps working
Yeah, I'm glad it's still working and come some time next year I'll be getting a new phone, but grrrrr. Right now I don't really want to change yet because the phone's nice and I like it, and even if I managed to squeeze the dude for a new-phone fund, I'd have been quite heartbroken.
My next phone's going to be aluminium.

So you have your phone in your pocket with your keys? Seriously?
I dropped my phone once onto road, chipped a small bit off the top right, i felt terrible about it. Im very careful with it these days, i still haven't got any idea what a replacement phone would be like, the N1 is still the best imo.
noooooo you people are insane. or i am just OCD about chit like that. yes its just a phone if you look at it. however, that one scratch, nick or dent will haunt you til you get a replacement. I remember my first real cell phone back in the days. "NOKIA 8900" yes the slider. i cradled that thing like my first born. one day my friend asked to see it and she decided to close the lid by slamming the phone to the table. I nearly killed her. ever since then, when they ask, i say no and say its just a phone. LOL.
I don't know i am maybe little insane but i just cant over look the damage. i prob replace it or change out the casing. i done that many times. however, if you were looking to replace it no biggie.
PS. I know somebody who can take care of your coworker if you want.

How much are we talking about?
Not much..... lol.
Plus its different when others drop your phone. When you do it you can shrug it off but others.... i don't know I'd I can handle it.....

Bummer! Hope u can fix it up. I keep mine in a bank safe
yeah i'm terrified of damaging my N1 that i just got and the guy i bought it from had dropped it once and it has a few dings on 1 side at the corners from it.
this is probably the first phone i've had that will stay in a rubber case most of the time. its just too thin and small in my clumsy hand to use without it i'm certain i would drop it and these screens break even easier than older phones did because the glass is so close to the edge of the housing.
my G1 however took many falls and the screen stayed intact. i was surprised how well it has held up. i used it for 2 years straight with no case.
to the guy who keeps his N1 in the same pocket as his keys, thats a recipe for disaster. remember glass is hard and brittle. when objects that are as hard or harder than glass touch, press or hit glass like a key or a rock the glass is more often than not going to break and at the very least get scratched and scratches if good enough can develop into a crack pretty easily.
i always have and always will keep my phone with screen facing my thigh in my pocket opposite of the pocket i keep my keys in

Aluminum scratches and dents worse than plastic! I'd choose plastic over aluminum. But that Liquidmetal material (a special patented alloy of titanium and other stuff that has no ordered crystal structure) looks pretty good; it might be tough enough. Hopefully more manufacturers will start using it.
Yall dont use cases?????

Actually, no, the nexus screen doesnt scratch easy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfqwKa4bT74
I don't usually put my keys and phone in the same pocket, it just happen to be in the same pocket at that time. And besides, my keys only consist of a car key and house key. It's not like I'm a janitor.
You could be the most careful guy in the world, but it just takes one bad drop and your phone could be done. I haven't seen it happen with the Nexus, but that's because no one I know has one. I've seen it with a handful of iPhones and other touch screen phones though.. It's well worth the investment to protect a $600 device

Exactly. You can't very well punch someone over a phone, people'd think you are a complete lunatic. But the urge is there. Oh, how it is there.

Good god, you think this video is real? It's faked, he's not pressing hard at all.
Besides, it's not the "one time" that'll necessarily get you, it's the "every day" stuff that gets you. The screen will get dull, the paint will start dulling.. There's zero chance I'll ever put my phone in my pocket with keys, coins, etc. In fact I rarely put it in my pocket at all, 99% of the time it's in my Krussel case.
Yeah I work in the glass industry the thinner the glass is the harder it is to scratch but the easier it is to break.
My nexus has a hand full of scratches on the screen
