If their brains are functioning correctly, they'd just hire several of XDA's members. Ideally, they'd integrate supercurio's work on Voodoo into their next Froyo firmware.
Something is NOT better than nothing. I hope they take their time and optimize the stinking releases that have been leaked so far.

You think they'd need to hire developers from forums to change the filesystem used on the phone? If they wanted to, it'd be a piece of cake to them. They simply don't plan on doing so. Why would they? It would be like officially accepting defeat of their own filesystem, which none of the big companies would be willing to do unless absolutely necessary.

Because some jackass at Samsung with a big ego can't admit that their filesystem is rubbish and needs to die. Even though they could easily swap it for a better one and give the phone a massive performance boost.
Whoever it is should get fired. Surely their engineers realise this, there must be someone stopping them from doing their job properly.
I hope they do something about it. It really is a strange problem.
JPH certainly wasn't fit to be officially released so I'm not surprised by a delay.

Same here in Romania, samsungmobiles.ro said the update will be available around October, 15th...
I prefer to update my phone in October instead of updating it tomorrow with another damn crappy firmware. These koreans have very strange policies about firmware development
I would be very surprised if samsung change filesystem so close to the release - this is not typical for a large company. The leaked roms should be by now a good indication of what to expect. The reason samsung came up with rfs is because of older flash technology, they just seem to feel safer and more comfortable with continuing using in-house solution. Frankly, I don't expect they would ever switch - it would require significant validation, support tools, coordination ... Sgs is probably already an old story internally and they are working on next gen devices...
this is really sad....cant believe a company like samsung shipping millions of phones all across the globe cant have a 15 member elite team compile a froyo build which works really well....thats really a shame for samsung imo. We're not talking about needing engineers from another planet with large sized brains to be cracking this one....it just needs a well coordinated prioritized approach.
Wonder when samsung would realize the importance of having a good software team....looks like only HTC has realized the importance of packing in good sw improvements over an os as a winning differentiator.

Agreed. I really like the SGS but this lag issue can't be ignored. If they really refuse to replace their terrible RFS system it seems like an insult. There is no good reason to keep it, we have already had people on this forum come up with significant improvements to the lag by implementing other filesystems.
But then the problem is, who do I go to next
I'm not afraid to switch manufacturer, I do it all the time. Nokia lost me due to crap software, HTC suck at sound quality, SE are super slow with Android updates (their flagship phone is still on 1.6, haha)...

There are still rom releases for their omnia 2 device, previous flag ship device. It may mean they won't abandon galaxy s so quickly.

Yeah, I don't think that Samsung will abandon SGS soon. I had i900 Omnia and the best firmware for this one has been released may be a year and a half after it's promo. Funny ha? I remember the first firmware. It was AWESOMELY crappy and sluggish. Sad story
@Maddmatt: I totally agree with you. Now Samsung have a really BIG chance to grow their market share with great phone like our SGS, but they should be fast and quick, fighting for their customers. Because we didn't spent 500$+ for their ignorance policies
i got omnia (the first one, 16GB) and only managed to see one official firmware update, and that's it. Then it was all about Omnia II. Hopefully, they won't do the same with SGS and come up with SGS II anytime soon.

I can't remember exactly but I think Hero didn't get the 2.1 update until after code dropped for FroYo...Sucks being a version behind. And considering track record its the only OS Update we will see official. I highly doubt we will actually get GingerBread from Samsung/Sprint.

I agree. Everyone getting their hopes up for Gingerbread for the Galaxy S phones, I think are setting themselves up for a big let down. I haven't seen any phone (besides Droid and N1) receive more than 1 official update. And considering Samsung's update history, I definitely don't see them supporting this phone beyond 2.2

Not just tablets - Just better than 2.1 was with large screens (over 4.5 inchs).
GingerBread should add native video calling, a new UI, and a few other surprises.
And suspected release of Google Music.
Hopefully the ball keeps rolling until it gets to Sprint. Post any rumors you hear on this thread so we can keep track of this "gradual" rollout.
I agree that its unlikely we will get anything after 2.2...it seems like every Android I buy this happens to me lol. Oh well

I believe the reports for gingerbread are 4th quarter of 2010. That's probably why everyone thinks it's coming soon. Other gingerbread info was from the last IO (they showed the music player streaming music from cloud) and just general quotes from google engineers about trying to get rid of carrier skins and what not.
Having said all that, didn't they just hire that webOS designer a few months ago? He's supposedly the lead designer for gingerbread, so could it really be coming in q4?
As for support, i think it'll be awhile but it will be supported. I feel like sammy has to support the galaxy line at this point w/ their 5 million handsets sold and the imminent galaxy tab (which they already stated will have gingerbread at some point). This is my first sammy phone and it's pretty apparent people have gotten burned by them in the past, but it would be a customer relations nightmare if they did this w/ the galaxy line.

Maybe it will be a good reason to upgrade galaxy s phones because of the name similarities, now whether they have any similar parts inside I doubt but kind of gives us some of that 'hope' it will come out for phones also.
They have a development center here in Irvine, ca..... I will mission impossible into the facility and retrieve the release date in the laser protected vault room.

Actually it will be released with phones that have a 1Ghz Processing chip and at least 3.5 inch screen or larger.
Google themselves stated that gingerbread will require ATLEAST the N1's specs bare minimum. I read that a LOOOOOONG time ago though so idk...
But ayways, sammys rep for the tab mentioned honeycomb...
What if honeycomb is the start for android tablet OS and gingerbread is the continuation for the phone os?
I mean, tink about it...honeycomb isn't a sweet snack...atleast one that I know of...

Honeycomb is both a delicious treat as well as a continuation of the alphabetical nomenclature Google has chosen for their OS's. If they were going to branch off and make a separate lineage for tablets alone, I doubt they would interrupt their alphabetical naming scheme for phone based OS' to do it.

Mmmmm honeycomb is delicious! I got a chunk of white chocolate covered honeycomb from a local confection shop and it was DELICIOUS.
But I agree.... I dont honestly believe that any of the Galaxy phones will get anything past 2.2.
By the time 2.2 is FINALLY pushed to all the galaxys, new and better phones will be out.
I've never seen ANY android that had more than 1 system upgrade that wasn't a leaked developer made upgrade.

A huge shocker... not a big surprise though as Mr. Sanjay Jha already pointed out some big changes were about to happen when he said they are out not fishing for patents and are ready to fight all those infringment charges, last week.
For motorola its good or not is something i cant understand, but for google this is going to be a huge win as moto is one of the biggest patent holders and one of the hurdles stopping El Goog from dominating the smartphone market.
At the end it also means, google will have android as an open source platform n also means that we are the blessed ones who owns a motorola phone...
Kudos to both Motorola and El Goog...

I wouldn't count on it. I think the Nexus will be released before the transaction is completed.
Also, at CES, Matias Duarte told Engadget that the next version of Android wouldn't requires hardware buttons like all previous phones.
Well we didn't know that google was buying Motorola right. So they might have planed the nexusrola too.

I feel like they're stressing the patent portfolio so that they don't have to worry about antitrust issues, I feel like there will be quite a few more nexus style phones and the attic might be treated more like a nexus.

Well, today, the Galaxy S 2 AT&t got official ICS 4.0.3; a mere 8 months after its release, while we still have at least 3 more months before ICS is official and our phone has been out for over 16 months. Something smells fishy to me.

Phone already does everything I needed it to. By the time ICS comes out there will be Jelly Bean devices coming out anyway.....
Different phones get upgraded at different rates. The Atrix saw a lot of updates in the first few months. The updates from Motorola may have slowed down but the updates from CM and other ROM devs haven't. There's plenty of life in the ol' beast yet.
Check out Jokersax' CM9. A few things aren't quite there yet, but if you work around them you'll have a near-full functioning CM9. Once ICS is official the few remaining driver issues should be worked out.
My moms Android still has Froyo.
You will NEVER win when it comes to cell phones. Or with any electronics.

Same with my Dad's XPRT. Trapped on Froyo right now. But unlike the Atrix, the XPRT has pretty much no developer community.

That's wrong. When purchasing a smartphone you SHOULD receive updates. We the consumer decide how we should be treated by the manufacturer. If a company doesn't provide updates then don't buy their merchandise. Also all manufacturers have agreed to maybe update for 18 months lol stick with the companies that actually deliver.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. It's the whole voting with your wallet thing. Unfortunately it's partially subjective. As I said the Atrix got several updates right out of the gate. The Xoom has been quick to get updates. From what I've seen Motorola is one of the top manufacturers from an update perspective.
But like others they do lag behind the Nexus line and they definitely lag behind all the developers out there (and here).
Remember that many of us purchased the Atrix on hardware specs hoping that there would be updates. At the time it was released dual-core phones were unheard of.
Fast updates are one of the things you risk giving up when you go the subsidized route. What you lose in updates you tend to gain in hardware and cost efficiency. The best route if you want fast updates is to move to the Nexus line. You'll spend more buying a new phone at full cost every year or two but you'll get updates a hell of a lot faster and end up with a stock device.

In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice they are different.
Go to a different manufacturer. The only one that consistently hasn't had this problem is Apple.
Atrix came out before that 18-month agreement was made.

It's true, Apple is only supporting three very similar phones right now. But they have been very good about keeping devices on the latest released software, albeit with reduced features sometimes.
As for other manufacturers, I'm reminded of the bad old days of badge-engineering with cars. Chrysler and their K-cars are a prime example. It reflects a "we build crap but we sure sell a lot of crap" mindset.

I guess the lesson here is that if you are not a Verizon customer, don't buy a Motorola product. Otherwise, you are treated like a booger...nice and shiny that gets lot of attention for a minute, and then flicked away and forgotten. Even though the Razor Nexus is a rumor, I think it will become a reality in the near future.
Oh yea, the other lesson here, don't always believe everything Motorola says. haha

Don't forget, rumour has it that there will be multiple Nexus devices coming out. We still won't know till they reveal them in a few days time at the event. So let's just have our fingers crossed that there are more choices for our devices (although I'll still ignore a Nexus from Motorola, they treat us customers like ****)

The issue isn't so much that ICS/JB is any better than GB.................it's more that it was promised and indicated on the Moto website, then the support was pulled for this development. They should have communicated more with the customers, and been honest about the plans for the future. Instead they have ended up losing a lot of consumers who would have been loyal had they not reneged on their promises.

There are a couple of reasons to upgrade to ICS/JB. One is security. There are enhancements (such as ASLR) which make it much more difficult for hackers to run their own code on your phone. The other is usability. ICS and JB is just way more usable IMO. The UI is clean, and requires less taps to get to common functions. I stayed on GB for a while, tried ICS and though, meh. But JB was a huge jump in maturity in the OS.

To expand on the previous post. There are many security flaws in GB. Look ho often desk tops are updated to close possible exploits. With smart phones becoming ever more popular they are coming under increasing threats. JB fixes many of the possible exploits. My phone contains most of my personal data including banking information. I want to keep that data safe.

^ Plus on top of that they started us with Froyo, when GB was already out.
The only "real" support the Atrix ever got was when BL Unlock got leaked.
I find it funny that the devs here made Motorola's team look like a bunch of chimps...

Motorola's dev are not bad at all. Motorola Management is.

But, what I see as the major beef from the majority of people is nothing more than the fact they didn't get the update. Most people, including those who frequent the XDA (Atrix) forums here, couldn't tell you what is different other than to say UI, face unlock, and kernel.
