Official froyo to be available end of next month - Galaxy S I9000 General

@Samsung_Mobiles: @hellopraveen Froyo will be available by end of next month.
They just replied me on twitter.

Congrats Samsung. Three months after every other company. When will they learn that software development is just as important as hardware development?

they probably read XDA's bashing of JPH and thought "oops, we be gettin this shizzle aiight!"

It will likely come sooner to some locations

If their brains are functioning correctly, they'd just hire several of XDA's members. Ideally, they'd integrate supercurio's work on Voodoo into their next Froyo firmware.

Something is NOT better than nothing. I hope they take their time and optimize the stinking releases that have been leaked so far.

Another month or even two is fine with me. I'd rather they do things properly than rush to please an impatient minority

You think they'd need to hire developers from forums to change the filesystem used on the phone? If they wanted to, it'd be a piece of cake to them. They simply don't plan on doing so. Why would they? It would be like officially accepting defeat of their own filesystem, which none of the big companies would be willing to do unless absolutely necessary.

The real mystery though is, why did they come with RFS in the first place?

Because some jackass at Samsung with a big ego can't admit that their filesystem is rubbish and needs to die. Even though they could easily swap it for a better one and give the phone a massive performance boost.
Whoever it is should get fired. Surely their engineers realise this, there must be someone stopping them from doing their job properly.
I hope they do something about it. It really is a strange problem.
JPH certainly wasn't fit to be officially released so I'm not surprised by a delay.

Same here in Romania, samsungmobiles.ro said the update will be available around October, 15th...

I prefer to update my phone in October instead of updating it tomorrow with another damn crappy firmware. These koreans have very strange policies about firmware development

I would be very surprised if samsung change filesystem so close to the release - this is not typical for a large company. The leaked roms should be by now a good indication of what to expect. The reason samsung came up with rfs is because of older flash technology, they just seem to feel safer and more comfortable with continuing using in-house solution. Frankly, I don't expect they would ever switch - it would require significant validation, support tools, coordination ... Sgs is probably already an old story internally and they are working on next gen devices...

this is really sad....cant believe a company like samsung shipping millions of phones all across the globe cant have a 15 member elite team compile a froyo build which works really well....thats really a shame for samsung imo. We're not talking about needing engineers from another planet with large sized brains to be cracking this one....it just needs a well coordinated prioritized approach.
Wonder when samsung would realize the importance of having a good software team....looks like only HTC has realized the importance of packing in good sw improvements over an os as a winning differentiator.
bah!

Agreed. I really like the SGS but this lag issue can't be ignored. If they really refuse to replace their terrible RFS system it seems like an insult. There is no good reason to keep it, we have already had people on this forum come up with significant improvements to the lag by implementing other filesystems.
But then the problem is, who do I go to next
I'm not afraid to switch manufacturer, I do it all the time. Nokia lost me due to crap software, HTC suck at sound quality, SE are super slow with Android updates (their flagship phone is still on 1.6, haha)...
Damn, they're all crap in their own way
Samsung don't make me write you off for good by screwing the SGS owners over

There are still rom releases for their omnia 2 device, previous flag ship device. It may mean they won't abandon galaxy s so quickly.

Yeah, I don't think that Samsung will abandon SGS soon. I had i900 Omnia and the best firmware for this one has been released may be a year and a half after it's promo. Funny ha? I remember the first firmware. It was AWESOMELY crappy and sluggish. Sad story
@Maddmatt: I totally agree with you. Now Samsung have a really BIG chance to grow their market share with great phone like our SGS, but they should be fast and quick, fighting for their customers. Because we didn't spent 500$+ for their ignorance policies

i got omnia (the first one, 16GB) and only managed to see one official firmware update, and that's it. Then it was all about Omnia II. Hopefully, they won't do the same with SGS and come up with SGS II anytime soon.

Where is Flash 10.1

Ok so now that I've gotten your attention with the o' so "loud and in your face" title of this post, on to the main point. I'm REALLY dissapointed that samsung hasn't stepped up to the plate and included flash with the latest update, leaked or not, 2.1 or not. I'm tired of having to use that piece o' crap skyfire broweser that only works half the time on certain sites, and that's if I lucky. It seems to me that this phone may be destined for the veritable technological garbage dump that so many other phones have been. Samsung has yet to deliver on ANY of the promised fixes, including froyo, although maybe this leaked version of the update isn't the final one, and I'm starting to doubt if we'll EVER see froyo. Is anyone else as pissed off as me? All I know is I'm gonna boot my vibrant for a n1 if something doesn't happen soon. Sorry to any mods or users for the incoherent rant and/or cursing in the aforementioned post, I'm just venting.

They just launched the Fascinate, and now they have their phone on all carriers. Sure, it would have been great to have Froyo by now, or launch the Fascinate with Froyo, but I don't think they'd want to fragment their US Galaxy S so much. I'm sure it will come, especially now that all the phones are out. I have a feeling they are going to develop Froyo for all the Galaxy's at the same time. Whether the carriers decide to push out Froyo as soon as it's ready is another question.

Seriously I can understand peoples frustrations but venting on the forum isn't going to change a thing. The OTA for Froyo is speculated to be released in September and its still September isn't it? On that note it's only speculated not confirmed. People are in fact working on getting 2.2 to our phones not just Samsung, all I can say is be patient. If you don't want to be patient then shut up and get a G2 when its released if we don't have Froyo by then.

Well I kinda understand the frustration in the OP as flash support means a lot more on the web. I miss watching news clips on CNN website and shows on Hulu on the gorgeous Vibrant screen. But I have no doubt about Samsung's commitment to Galaxy S especially after reading the results of leaked firmware. Instead of losing patience and shouting in forum I would wait for Sammy to roll out a stable Froyo update on this fantastic phone and then enjoy all the goodies. I am sure nobody still has question on whether Vibrant will get Froyo or not after seeing all those videos of european version running froyo. It may be September or October, but I can wait.

Not to be an ass but, why don't you use the advanced version so we can see the CPU gain and not just the lagfix gain. The lagfix makes some things faster and other things slower...the original lagfix that is. I haven't used the voodoo one, so I can't comment on it. I know there is a CPU gain on yours as the most I've seen just with lagfix is in the 2200's. So I assume you have a different rom and/or OC'ing.

Not necessarily. Your custom rom is on top, but a stock Galaxy S is still below a Nexus 1 running froyo. If we want to throw mods in the game, a custom N1 or Droid 2 may beat yours because they have froyo and you don't.

2. the galaxy s line does have hacked froyo on it, just look through the forums
3. idc about this comment
anyway, we'll get froyo soon enough, look at the evidence, it's been confirmed already, maybe not for a specific one in a specific country, but hey, once one country is out, others follow quick, besides, the galaxy tab, which is basically the same hardware as the galaxy s, runs froyo, it's probably the bug fixes thats taking them a while, be patient and you'll get it
edit: forgot to add, you can use skyfire, you got a galaxy s, skyfire will not lag at all, its a browser that has full flash capabilities, and actually the video button thing is better than having youtube playing a video straight out, at least you can control it that way, but yea, skyfire, look in tha market

With the Galaxy S, I became a new Samsung Mobile customer and I'm a little bit disappointed. Not because of the froyo delays, i can survive that. But the lack with standard rfs is horrible given the technical specs this phone has.
Nevertheless, Samsung is one of the best manufactures for notebooks and TVs. In Germany, their support for notebooks is perfect. I've got experiences for a long time with these guys...
Let's wait a few more weeks, life goes on.
If Samsung are seriously considering Gingerbread they will need to up their game - their current speed of development is appalling. If Gingerbread becomes the most popular Android platform in the near future I will definitely consider selling and switching to HTC (Desire Z/HD)

Yes they are a great company, just don't have a clue about firmware development.
Symbian on Samsung sucked, bada sucks and now android on Samsung sucks as well. They should just focus on the hardware and leave the firmware development to Google. That's not ever going to happen though so I guess we'll just wait for the next nexus, which I still believe will be developed eventually.

I agree with your statement.
People need to remember that the Galaxy S phones have been in the market place for only about four months now. Many so-called "promises" have been speculative promises by random people, not by Samsung. They only promised to release the Froyo update when it's ready around September or October, and they are trying to keep that promise with the recent release in Europe. If you have any understanding of the software development and testing process, providing a major update in four months after the initial release of the product isn't great but not horrible as people say. Besides, we have great fixes that make the phone work really well now anyway. Just use these fixes and be a little patient! ^^ I love my Galaxy S for now...many thanks to VooDoo project and Samsung for at least giving us a great HW device!
BTW, I heard, from the most popular Korean Android website community- iroidcafe, that they discovered some issues with the JPM version and therefore, are pulling the release momentarily to fix the discovered issues before continuing to release the Froyo to the rest.

Wait Samsung are thinking? Didn't know they could do that. If they thought about it a little, they would take care of their customers better. A modern-day twelve year old has a higher level of skill in communication than their entire PR section. Actually, based on the mess they call Kies, that twelve year old might be better at programming, too...
Their hardware is pretty awesome though.
OK returning to subject, loosely translated that means a 5-10% faster ROM is coming out in february? march maybe? I have stopped believing them a while ago.
who cares?
I can't upgrade to it anyway, until now I can't make Kies working for my SGS..
(still have no gut to flash using odin..)
Samsung = the worst aftersale support I have ever experienced. And, I haven't had major issues. I would hate to think what it would be like if this phone started playing up (like for some on this forum). Really gives Android the bad name. Hardware = top of the line, no argument about this.
Here is a noble idea Samsung. Spending a little more on your communication to the public will increase our support for your brand. Don't lie or guess. Over estimate rfs dates for releases. You will be suprised how long people are prepared to wait, if they know the exact date. If you company has no credibility with your customers however, no matter what promises you will be making, you simply will be laughed at.
I personally do not believe anything that Samsung are saying. This is my first and the last purchase from this company.

Not another Froyo Post..

This isn't a rant or anything, or I won't try to make it one. But I just came across on Android Central that the Droid is getting 2.2.1.
Now this is just so depressing already that we have a phone that's been out for about 5 months now and haven't seen Froyo (only in Unoffical leaked builds). The Droid has been out far longer, I know that. But Samsung is really dragging their feet. Froyo offically, when it comes out, better knock our ****ing socks off or it was a waste of time to wait for them to deliver.
I'm just saying, this just makes Samsung look that much worse.

There's really no debate that Samsung is WAY behind here. Yes. the Droid has been out way longer, but the Incredible and Droid X haven't and they've gotten Froyo a long time ago. Incredible got it around 8/30 and X around 9/21.
Assuming that Samsung does get it out this year, that puts them anywhere from 2-4 months behind the competition, depending on when they do finally release it.
That's really bad. Sure they didn't promise 2.2 at any particular time, but that doesn't mean I don't factor it in when making my next phone purchase. I hope everyone does. If not, it'll give the manufactures even more reason to withhold updates in the future and try to push new phones instead.
Just heard from Cyanogen's twitter that CM6 is finished for the G2. I'm sure the new my touch isn't far behind.

Yeah, but you seem to be ignoring the fact that the Droid already HAS an official Froyo, and the leaked build is a second generation update.
The Vibrant does NOT have an official build, and the way it's going, the Droid X may have Gingerbread before we get an official Froyo build.
How can you even begin to defend Samsung?
Yes, it is "just" another Froyo post. +1 Ignore!

Geez, people, of course Samsung is going to be behind. Motorola's and HTC's phones all have the same OMAP and Snapdragon cores they've used from the first Droid and Nexus One. No wonder they've all gone to Froyo before Samsung.
How many phones used the Hummingbird before the Galaxy S line? None. But I'll bet you that future updates will come faster now they've got Froyo figured out.

Designing the chip and modifying the software to work with the hardware are two different things. Just because you know the hardware, doesn't mean it's easy to make the software work with it nicely.
Only thing wrong with these threads is they are always full of hearsay. Rarely anyone states fact, just opinion. Who says sammy is holding it back? The leak came from tmo right? this pessimistic view is what makes ppl always have that "omg I have froyo & I hate it, its not perfect.... I want gingerbread" mentality. Life lesson, you'll never be happy with this attitude.
I, myself, try to look at the recent events of the "rumoured nexus s" that engadget posted pics. If this does happen to grace the GS community think of how fast, far, & easily we may make it to 2.3! Im no tech & I may be way off, but id like to think that this would give us the OPEN "NEXUS" development base we'd need to achieve that level of vanilla android base w/ drivers, code & hopefully working gps ;j (minus the new chipset, obviously).
Just be glad that we do have devs who do what they can & hope that sammy doesn't do anything else to screw us. I will be hoping (but not holding my breathe) for a nexus $ gingerbread port.

Exactly. Remember that Froyo was actually built for the Snapdragon, whereas most of the GS hardware is unlike that seen in other previous phones.

Apple doesn't seem to have any problems with doing this. Samsung is way bigger. They should have their crap together

Yey but we get to modify the crap out of one of the fastest phones with one of the best screens, and do whatever we want with it, thanks to some great sharing devs, to a device that's almost un- brickable.
Now thats fun!
Apple crapple, great form and simply reliable yet unbendable device to buy all things Apple dollars via only iTunes. No thanks. I'll take what Samsung doesn't have together.
Yes I've complained before but now I have learned a bit more and I have Froyo.

How come none of the people that rant about not having an official Froyo release remember that 1. we have they best hardware of any phone out, I can't recall how many times I've heard owners of other phones complain that they've run out of room for their apps because they only have 2gb internal storage, and 2. this site is XDA Developers not XDA stock software release news. If you want to rant about the official release go over to the T-Mobile or Samsung forums and do it.

[ YES / NO ] #NeverAgain Poll

For those not familiar - #NeverAgain Round 1 - May have brought you Froyo.
I was about to press "Submit New Thread" on the Official #NeverAgain Round 2 thread... but consulted those I consider wiser than me and was told to hold off.
At this point, I think I need to know how the community feels.
The reasons I felt strongly for now being a good time:
GB patches security holes (big for me), I want GB Source (CM7 w/ GPS) and I think Samsung would be hurting/listening if we REALLY DID NOT BUY THE TAB 10.1.
So, If #NeverAgain would work, it would take a COMMUNITY (BIG TIME) EFFORT, and it would take NOT buying the Tab 10.1. And telling people not to buy it. That was the whole intent before, we vowed to not buy their products based on lack of support.
A BIG reason to hold off on NeverAgain....
it honestly may not be Samsung to blame. WTF is going on with T-Mobile? Is the merger to blame?
This movement honesty may be better suited against/in addition towards T-Mobile.
It's in your hands.. you decide how we should handle it.
I just ask that you be respectful, think about it, and do not troll.
DO NOT JUST SAY YES WITHOUT CONSIDERING THE FUTURE.
EDIT: I posted the below comment after reading some posts...
Also.... I have thick skin. You are not going to hurt my feelings. I assure you, my only intention is to try and help this community.
Some thoughts from reading the comments:
Again, I'm not saying it's right, but it could help.
I felt like we should address it as a community, so the majority is on board. A movement doesn't work if it's not supported. By addressing it, having rational thought, we all win and are better off for it.
Sounds like the majority agree it's not right, or the right time. Good. Now the community needs to decide, what is next?
Wait? Question T Mobile? Assume we're the red headed step child of the Galaxy variants?
If not this... What?

...Larry King?
^ not a thread for jokes.
Certain developers
I'm not sure I see what the Tab has to do with this? Honestly, they're pumping out so many new devices at this point I have trouble believing that they'd even care. I mean how many Vibrant owners are even left, I wonder.
Personally, I've already decided against another Samsung device since the first, and original fiasco. Not to mention the whole GPS thing. It's just not OK with me that I purchased a defective product and neither T-Mobile or Samsung seems to care. In fact it was like pulling teeth just getting a replacement device when something completely unrelated went wrong. This, of course, is T-Mobile's fault, but nevertheless it's BS. At this point T-Mobile will be lucky if I stay with them, especially with the Death Star lurking to buy them out. Ugh. I left ATT for greener pastures, dammit.
So, anyway, my point is I'm still riding the original NeverAgain train. Do whatever, I'm down to ***** and complain some more.
This should be a #NeverAgainTMobile thread. There are a bunch of leaks for other devices on other carriers and internationally, the SGS has GB in many countries.
Id hold off a bit to #NeverAgain Samsung. They gave devs some SGS2's and used open source drivers, etc.
They aren't the problem. Carriers are the problem.

Def agreeing with this, #NeverAgain round two. I recently switched away from my Vibrant because of the lack of updates and support from Samsung. Its almost like we have to file a class action in order to get an update.
To top things off, they are continuing their "forced upgrade" mentality by releasing 2.3 for the SGS4G but nothing for the Vibrant, even though there is very little difference between them (its slightly different but minor).
Even worse, they think that because they gave ONE CM developer a SGSII that they have made up for all the mistakes they have made w/ previous devices, and publicized it like it was the second coming. What about the hundreds of developers that were working on SGS devices before the CM team wanted anything to do with Galaxy S devices (TeamHacksung needed to make an entirely seperate git for their port of CM).
Personally, I am done with Samsung, but I have a bunch of friends and family that are using Samsung Android devices that shouldn't get left behind
So.... #NeverAgain

They gave ONE developer a SGSII, and ignored everyone else. Also, a leak is not a official update, and doesnt make it to the majority of users. They need to officially update via KIES or an OTA. Lastly, TMobile just updated the SGS4G to 2.3.3, so the issue is still almost entirely Samsung's IMO. None of the US variants have an official release, and considering the phone is not even a year old, thats pathetic.
We haven't gotten ANYTHING from TMO or Samsung.
"but we got GPS" that leak was for Vibrant4G we're just lucky it worked for us.
Definitely. [insert french accent here] We're the resistance!
I think something needs to be said. EVERY other SGS device has Gingerbread except us. WHY? I think we deserve to know why we aren't being supported. Whether it's because of the merger or something else entirely.
Well I'll get flack for this, but I say no!
I mean, they gave in for Froyo, but lets face it. When we buy our Phones, don't go into the sell for what they might do or get.. but for what they can do at the time of sell...
the other reason, Samsung has shown support to the Dev's in recent events & starting another campaign to me is like spitting in there eye.. You also have to remember TMO Dropped the Vibrant for the Vibrant 4G, so any support / updates are carrier dependent but samsung might update it... who knows....
Just my 2 cents & not worth much, just give them a bit more time.

This is exactly what I mean.

I think they still sell the vibrant. regardless I see no harm from giving then some pressure. why not try to squeeze at least one more update out of them?
Im with CallipH but im also with Eugene, its kind of weird that they started on updates for every other device except the Vibrant, but maybe their doing there work in order. Like i think the Epic 4G was the first phone to see a leak, now the Captivate, most likely it'll be the Fascinate next then us Last. I see it as "Better Late Than Never". It'd be cool if it was early like with FROYO but we just have to hope we get it and if we don't get GINGERBREAD the obvious reason is the Galaxy S 4G. Thats the only possible and reasonable reason. But all we can do is wait and see. Patience is the Key.

The leaks were not leaked by Samsung for you. They were leaked by Samfirware.com. They are NOT meant for public release. I don't know why everyone is saying other phones have Gingerbread... because they don't. Only the I9000 has Gingerbread.
I do not think Never again is the right format, Maybe a better format is "We are the loyal and you want to keep us that way heralding Samsung as the Phone of Phones"
I think this may be a better tact and if they do not respond Then go the #neveragain......attack..........
my 2 cents........

Yeah i knew before they even released the Galaxy S 4G leak what was going down. I didn't know that there was no builds yet for the Vibrant. But its weird that no one has started building Gingy for the Vibe yet, I think a lot of people know that these aren't official or even released by Samsung but by Samfirmware, I suppose their suspicious of why the Vibrant don't even have a build yet when we were the first to see FROYO. Or was it the Captivate? I don't remember but we were 1st or 2nd.
I think the real problem with #NeverAgain is that Samsung makes some really great devices. The Tab 10.1 and the SGS II are the best tablet and phone, respectively. Saying that I won't buy them when they blow the competition out of the water is tough.

Great point, but would they start development to abandon it half way? They will at least get it at some point, where as we have no evidence that they've even started for us. I'm all in for neveragain.

Principles. You need them.
I was thinking the same thing with the neveragain round 2, I say just wait a little bit longer, maybe till the beginning of next month and then do it, there is nothing to lose, they need to put pressure on t-mobile since I'm sure its all t-mobile's fault due to all these new phones coming out.
but instead of ssaying we won't buy a galaxy tab 10.1 just say anything samsung branded

Want to start a #PleaseShareYourSourceCode for the #Vibrant #Samsung

So have been thinking. As we did a pretty good #NeverAgain campaign way back to get Froyo to our Vibrants we could try a new approach.
We may be waiting for Samsung and T-mobile to come out with Gingerbread for the our Vibrants. I don't know what the chances for this is. But if they are planning on retiring the Vibrant (or already have) than there shouldn't be anything that keeps Samsung from releasing the sourcecode for the Vibrant. The good press that Samsung would get by releasing the source code (and I'm talking about the kernel) for the Vibrant, can be tremendous. If they are not planning on using it, than great if they release the source. If they do plan on releasing it, but also hand it over to the developers like the CM team, how much more grateful will we be as their power user group.
Keeping on the developers good side should be important for Samsung and the other manufacturers, as that also leads to a very happy power user group. Which in turn refers their products to their friends and families.
So just checking to see what the interest would be for us people that are left with the Vibrant would be involved in making a campaign like this to succeed?

You made some spelling mistakes
But yes its pointless to do that, once something is used with success it won't touch the crowd the same/losses its meaning

I agree. The first campaign worked because it was something new and half way legitimate. If they are working on GB for us, a year after release, I don't think we have much ground to complain. Not that you can't, feel free, but now people are starting to hit the down hill slope of looking forward to their next upgrade.
Just my opinion.
Edit: I am 'tarded
The Vibrant is powerful enough to maintain a long lifespan. There really are only about 2 phones I'd consider a strong enough upgrade to even consider jumping ship.
Ice Cream Sandwich isn't far away. Since it's meant to work on all devices (phones, tablets, pc's, etc)... I really hope drivers aren't the reason I can't use this phone for long time to come..
Well, that and AT&T. BOO.
As much as we love this phone it won't live forever. We can't beg for every update

I know we can't ask for the update. Don't really care. But we know they are sitting on the code and if they are not planning on giving us GB at least they could give us the code. Especially the kernel so that CM can get a perfectly working CM7 for the Vibrant.

The problem is that if it's not finished (which is very likely) and we use the code a lot of misinformed people will complain about how we were given buggy code. Then the conspiracy theorists will assume that Samsung sabotaged the code just to get people to hate their phones and want to buy a new one.
All of this will go back to Samsung and they will be labeled as bad for not knowing how to program, or hurting development, or being evil, or ...
Perfect world they could just make all their code transparent for us all to see as soon as it happens, but they would rather be like every other company and hold out on giving out source until they feel it is ready than risk being hurt by trying to help out.
If the code was finished they would be pushing for an update. I doubt they have anything complete for the vibrant.
