$12.5 Billion! Can't wait for the future of Motorola Mobility now
- DarkRyoushii
I was just about to post this
This is completely insane!
I can't wait to see what this will mean for existing Motorola phones. Will they finally release an official stock android? And most importantly, what impact will it have on the Android ecosystem as a whole?
Either way, this can only be good news for all of us!

Definitely!
I think this is huge. It means some of these powerful Motorola phones might actually get the support and updates they need to show off their potential.
Bring on Ice Cream for the Atrix!
I don't expect we'll see any major changes in a while though.
"The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2011 or early 2012."

A huge shocker... not a big surprise though as Mr. Sanjay Jha already pointed out some big changes were about to happen when he said they are out not fishing for patents and are ready to fight all those infringment charges, last week.
For motorola its good or not is something i cant understand, but for google this is going to be a huge win as moto is one of the biggest patent holders and one of the hurdles stopping El Goog from dominating the smartphone market.
At the end it also means, google will have android as an open source platform n also means that we are the blessed ones who owns a motorola phone...
Kudos to both Motorola and El Goog...
Now go out there and beat the crap out of the competition...(Dear apple, u know whats coming n what you do next...)
Fantastic news, lets hope this means that a future Motorola!! Nexus phone with have a LED notification light.
Seems like we don't have to worry about getting ics after all

I wouldn't count on it. I think the Nexus will be released before the transaction is completed.
Also, at CES, Matias Duarte told Engadget that the next version of Android wouldn't requires hardware buttons like all previous phones.
Well we didn't know that google was buying Motorola right. So they might have planed the nexusrola too.

Of course, the nexus could very well be a Motorola device. But it would kick the Atrix 2's ass
I came. Anyone know if android phones' would become more "standardized" I.e. more uniformed shape and specs like apple phones?

There is way too much speculation without any kind of background whatsoever. This acquisition has probably got more to do with Motorola's patent portfolio than anything else.
I wonder how many people actually read the articles (not just the headlines) before they make a comment about the future of Android.

I feel like they're stressing the patent portfolio so that they don't have to worry about antitrust issues, I feel like there will be quite a few more nexus style phones and the attic might be treated more like a nexus.

So apparently Google plans to up it patent portfolio by purchasing Motorola Mobility. What do you think this will mean for our handset and the future of Motorola handsets?
Good or Bad?
HyperTextTransferProtocol://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20110815-706430 dot html
Good. Google may actually listen to us instead of ignoring us all the way (we may get updates quicker as well)
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Good, this is really good news. If not right now for current Motorola users, then for sure for the future of Android. I believe this will make new standards for android. For example Stock Gingerbread, Specs, etc. We will be seeing more phones on the quality of the Nexus 1 and Nexus S, but made by Motorola.
This also includes better OS updates because they will come straight from Google, and I hope that they will support Motorola's current rather than just their future devices. I wonder whether Google will just have Motorola make stock gingerbread phones in the future, or improve the Motorola Applications Platform...
This was more of a move to buy patents. However this helps Android as a whole, because it helps to cut down the legal BS with Apple.
As for Motorola, hopefully this will finally be the end of Motoblur forever!...

Google hasn't opened up honeycomb but ice cream sandwich is open!
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Apparently the reason google didnt open source honeycomb is that it was an ugly bodge (the code), hacked together in a hurry to get a version that would work on tablets. Guess theyre embarrassed to let people see the mess.
Ice cream is basically honeycomb done *properly*, so that it scales across all devices and is maintainable into the future.
As far as the moto thing goes:
(1) My belief is that it's primarily for patents. Hoping that google will use them to provide umbrella coverage for other manufacturers...
(2) It's a good deal for moto - IMO they were doomed without this. They seem to make great hardware but then inevitably stick crappy software on their phones (blur is only the most recent example). Also bootloader lock-down hell and crappy update schedules. Hopefully google ownership will fix their shortcomings while keeping their strengths and i might actually be able to consider buying a moto phone at some point in my lifetime.

Well, today, the Galaxy S 2 AT&t got official ICS 4.0.3; a mere 8 months after its release, while we still have at least 3 more months before ICS is official and our phone has been out for over 16 months. Something smells fishy to me.

NEVER buy a phone for upgradability purposes. You'll more than likely get burned.
Go ahead and jump to touchwiz then. Stop making rant posts.
I'd rather wait for the new stockblur look and still enjoy my phone.
93% of android devices are still not on ICS yet life goes on.....
Phone already does everything I needed it to. By the time ICS comes out there will be Jelly Bean devices coming out anyway.....
Different phones get upgraded at different rates. The Atrix saw a lot of updates in the first few months. The updates from Motorola may have slowed down but the updates from CM and other ROM devs haven't. There's plenty of life in the ol' beast yet.
Check out Jokersax' CM9. A few things aren't quite there yet, but if you work around them you'll have a near-full functioning CM9. Once ICS is official the few remaining driver issues should be worked out.

That's wrong. When purchasing a smartphone you SHOULD receive updates. We the consumer decide how we should be treated by the manufacturer. If a company doesn't provide updates then don't buy their merchandise. Also all manufacturers have agreed to maybe update for 18 months lol stick with the companies that actually deliver.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. It's the whole voting with your wallet thing. Unfortunately it's partially subjective. As I said the Atrix got several updates right out of the gate. The Xoom has been quick to get updates. From what I've seen Motorola is one of the top manufacturers from an update perspective.
But like others they do lag behind the Nexus line and they definitely lag behind all the developers out there (and here).
Remember that many of us purchased the Atrix on hardware specs hoping that there would be updates. At the time it was released dual-core phones were unheard of.
Fast updates are one of the things you risk giving up when you go the subsidized route. What you lose in updates you tend to gain in hardware and cost efficiency. The best route if you want fast updates is to move to the Nexus line. You'll spend more buying a new phone at full cost every year or two but you'll get updates a hell of a lot faster and end up with a stock device.

In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice they are different.
Go to a different manufacturer. The only one that consistently hasn't had this problem is Apple.
Atrix came out before that 18-month agreement was made.

It's true, Apple is only supporting three very similar phones right now. But they have been very good about keeping devices on the latest released software, albeit with reduced features sometimes.
As for other manufacturers, I'm reminded of the bad old days of badge-engineering with cars. Chrysler and their K-cars are a prime example. It reflects a "we build crap but we sure sell a lot of crap" mindset.

Motorola Mobility, the once-dominant but now ailing mobile handset maker, has told its staff that it is cutting 20% of its staff – about 4,000 people – and wlll close about a third of its 94 worldwide offices.
In an SEC filing, Google said that the severance costs could be up to $275m in the two quarters to the end of the year and that there will also be "significant" other restructuring costs as it tried to restore the phone business to profitability.
Two-third of the job losses will come outside the US, Google says in the filing.
The company now plans to build high-end phones with sensors to detect people's entry into rooms, longer-lived batteries, higher-quality cameras and is recruiting artificial intelligence and supply chain experts to that end.
The moves are the first signs of a complete reorganisation under the ownership of the search giant Google, which completed its $12.5bn acquisition of Motorola Mobility (MMI) in May, and appointed its own Dennis Woodside to run the company, displacing Sanjay Jha, who had run it since August 2008.
Motorola once dominated the phone business, but the arrival of smartphones and particularly the iPhone hit its business. Although it tried to recover by adopting Google's Android software for its smartphones early on, soon after Jha took over, it has not been able to break Apple's grip on key parts of the US smartphone market, and its handset division has lost money in 14 of the past 16 quarters, while its share of both the smartphone and feature phone markets have shrunk.
The company is retrenching to the US, and will stop competing in unprofitable markets and cease offering low-end phones, to concentrate instead on a few phones rather than 27 it presently markets, Woodside told the New York Times in an interview.
''We're excited about the smartphone business," Woodside, who previously led Google's sales and operations for the Americas, told the NYT. "The Google business is built on a wired model, and as the world moves to a pretty much completely wireless model over time, it's really going to be important for Google to understand everything about the mobile consumer."
Google indicated previously that it bought MMI in order to gain access to its patent portfolio, and that it would not give it any special treatment over other companies building Android handsets. But some rivals to MMI such as Sony, HTC and LG, which are struggling in the smartphone market, are concerned that MMI may get "most favoured nation" status in funding and management, and access to new technology from Google.
Woodside has embarked on a top-down shakeup in which 40% of MMI's former vice-presidents have been let go. He told the NYT that he wants to make MMI's phones cool again, and is setting up an "advanced technology" group, headed by Regina Dugan from the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Dugan, the NYT said, is hiring metals scientists, acoustic engineers and artificial intelligence experts.
Meanwhile MMI is also tightening its supply chain, building fewer models and using half as many components under the direction of former Amazon Kindle supply chain manger Mark Randall.
But MMI faces the same problems that other handset companies do: that Apple and Samsung together have locked up around half of the entire smartphone business, and about 90% of its profits, leaving others fighting for the remaining 10%. In the past quarter RIM, Nokia, LG and Sony have all lost money in the handset business, with only HTC and some Chinese companies competing at the low end making profits.

I guess the lesson here is that if you are not a Verizon customer, don't buy a Motorola product. Otherwise, you are treated like a booger...nice and shiny that gets lot of attention for a minute, and then flicked away and forgotten. Even though the Razor Nexus is a rumor, I think it will become a reality in the near future.

The issue isn't so much that ICS/JB is any better than GB.................it's more that it was promised and indicated on the Moto website, then the support was pulled for this development. They should have communicated more with the customers, and been honest about the plans for the future. Instead they have ended up losing a lot of consumers who would have been loyal had they not reneged on their promises.

There are a couple of reasons to upgrade to ICS/JB. One is security. There are enhancements (such as ASLR) which make it much more difficult for hackers to run their own code on your phone. The other is usability. ICS and JB is just way more usable IMO. The UI is clean, and requires less taps to get to common functions. I stayed on GB for a while, tried ICS and though, meh. But JB was a huge jump in maturity in the OS.

To expand on the previous post. There are many security flaws in GB. Look ho often desk tops are updated to close possible exploits. With smart phones becoming ever more popular they are coming under increasing threats. JB fixes many of the possible exploits. My phone contains most of my personal data including banking information. I want to keep that data safe.

The only "real" support the Atrix ever got was when BL Unlock got leaked.
I find it funny that the devs here made Motorola's team look like a bunch of chimps...

But, what I see as the major beef from the majority of people is nothing more than the fact they didn't get the update. Most people, including those who frequent the XDA (Atrix) forums here, couldn't tell you what is different other than to say UI, face unlock, and kernel.

You don't seem to realize just how much influence the management can have over development.
