motorola Promises unlocked bootloader in late 2011? - Atrix 4G General

is there any hope this would happen in the usa?

"where carriers and operators will allow it"
Meaning: AT&T screws you.
LOL

Okay, then like HSUPA-gate, we need to start hammering AT&T with no end.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988634

Indeed as if a carrier that blocks side-loading is going to be keen to unlock the bootloader...
Bell allows side-loading and wifi tethering out of the box but I'm not sure they'll get jump on this out of pure laziness and apathy.
Perhaps 'the solution' when released for one carrier could be applied to phones from others unless there are different encryption keys or something.

Well if bell allows it that would be awesome.
Sent from my Motorola Olympus

So in other words, they will "maybe" unlock it after the phone is no longer relevant and the carriers say it's ok.
Gotcha.

Define relevant... ? I'm gonna keep this phone for a while.. It's got the internals of the future and it just needs the software to mature.

Exactly, this was a very vague announcement that didn't really guarantee anything. I'm more discouraged after this latest announcement than ever.

So you rather would have them say nothing than something?
This gives me hope that they are listening.

i fail to see how it's a vague announcement. They flat out said they intend to have unlockable/relockable bootloaders as found in the Xoom across all their phones by late 2011. We're already almost halfway through 2011. Granted, they do go on to say "where carriers and operators allow it"... but with all the flak Moto's been getting about it, i highly doubt AT&T hasn't seen it, and would probably get the same flak directed at them should they be the ones to hinder it.

Lol if everyone found out it was just AT&T/Verizon/T-Mobile standing in their way of an unlocked bootloader, all hell would brake loose on forums and tech blogs. I can see all the headlines now.

I doubt much at all will come from this. I'll be extremely surprised if we ever see an official bootloader unlock from Motorola.

Well, lets get this party started then.
I started a discussion in AT&T's facebook discussion. Link provided here: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=8576093908&topic=18121
Go put your two cents in if you like. I'm sure this would just be a starting point.

Someone above mentioned they will be on the Galaxy S II, how do you even go about selling your device for enough money to cancel your contract and buy a new phone off contract? (at the end of 2011 I'm pretty sure it will cost $200ish dollars to cancel your contract) plus buying any phone off contract costs atleast $600. How much money do you actually spend out of pocket and how much is covered by the selling of the phone? I know the longer you wait to sell the more it goes down.

I don't think you have to cancel your contract? I just buy my phones off contract and swap my SIM card when I feel like using them.

Yeah I don't bother to sell my old phones but upgrading mid-contract is my plan. With 3-year contracts to get any sort of significant discount here in Canada (although it got me my SGS for $25) you'd have to really use your device into the ground or pay a stiff ETF otherwise.

How much do you guys plan on selling it for?

If you bought a Nexus One and are on AT&T DONT LOOK HERE!

Personally I would be very mad right now if I bought a Nexus One on AT&T.
I wouldn't want it on at&t anyways, service isn't like it used to be. . .
Plus T-Mobile is gonna have way better phones than at&t soon enough.
What strikes it weird to me is why isn't AT&T listed as "coming soon" like Verizon etc...If in fact they were coming to them wouldn't they have list it
I switched from AT&T to T-mobile specifically because AT&T was too late getting on the Android bandwagon. Just because they are reacting at the late point in the race doesn't mean I regret my switch or that I wish I would have stayed to begin with... I'm getting better prices at T-mobile anyway
naa, if att gets it, I'd just sell mine and buy another.

Read the article again, it never says it's coming to AT&T, just that it's getting support for the AT&T 3G bands. This is most likely a version for a future Canadian carrier.

Indeed, perhaps it will be coming to Rogers, or the new Telus network. Doesn't mean you won't be able to get an unsubsidized version for use on AT&T though...
I am getting an N1 myself, but plan to only use on AT&T for a few days; too many dropped calls on this network. TMO may not necessarily have the coverage, but if you have a signal, at least you can rely on it.
I'm not really upset about this either. I was willing to switch back to T Mobile for this phone, but it would have meant two ETF's for me. Now I can just flip this one for a profit to an international buyer on eBay, save myself the ETF's, and not have to go through the hastle of switching.

maybe it's "early adopter syndrome" or something ?

Well, I'm glad I found out about this right now; just called HTC to return my phone since I'm definitely willing to wait it out for an ATT 3G version (the network is pretty solid in Philly for me).

Looks like Sprint cancelled the N1 as well...

Jesus, I already have my T-Mobile version and it doesn't hurt me but I really don't like Sprint (and Verizon) giving hopeful N1 customers the finger.
Its not that they just said no to subsidizing the phone... its that since they work off a CDMA network (non sim cards) they will just block the phone entirely off their network. Even if you had a Sprint compatible version and called them up to activate it they would tell you no. Greedy SOB's.
I wanted the N1 to become a smartphone standard across all 4 carriers so that Google would continue to produce it for a LONG time and come out with subsequent versions over time. But with just two carriers supporting it I am scared Google might abandon it long term due to low sales.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sprint-cans-nexus-one-in-favor-of-evo-4g/
Doesn't matter to you or me. We've got one of 2 current gen standard bearers (other being the Milestone/Droid) and ours doesn't have to go through a carrier to get OS updates.
All the apps will be built with us in mind, so fewer bugs and possibly more apps. We're basically Android Dev Phone 3. Nothing wrong with that at all. This is a loss for Sprint customers only, and the size of that loss is debatable.
Sucks to be a sprint customer. Will the EVO be better than the Nexus One? On paper, yes.. however that has yet to be seen. Most (or some) of us thought the N1 would be overshadowed by the Droid Incredible but that wasn't the case at all.
EVO vs Nexus One .... coming soon.
I wonder who's decision it was to cancel these phones...
Verizon, Sprint, Google, or HTC?

Good question. If it was Google, I think they bailed just before the vindication of the N1. I am reading about perceived "issues" with the Incredible and Desire similar to those on the N1 regarding 3g coverage. The N1 is a damn fine phone, and Verizon and Sprint users are missing out on an absolute gem with a better forward path than anything else in the hardware queue.

Its DEF Sprint's and Verizon's fault the phone was cancelled. Google could easily put in a different radio (like they did with the ATT version) but Sprint and Verizon can just refuse to activate the phone on their network like they did. ATT and TMo didn't have a choice since they use sim cards. Sprint and Verizon are evil companies that force their customers into more expensive options instead of giving them choices
Same reason the verizon deal fell through. both spring and verizon are very controlled networks. Googles wants to essentially turn the cell phone system into an europe-esque system where phones and service are seperate entities.
Each nexus phone has to be programs for verizon or sprint. They probably couldn't come to terms with an appropriate price and management. They'd have to have the phones programmed before being shipped out, one more step and one more cost.
Then you have the headaches of pushing out updates. We saw how long it took Droid to get the 2.1 update. If you want to update a sprint android phone you have to take it to a retail store to do it!
thats a damn shame
sprint cancelled (probably, i'm just guessing here) for the same reason verizon did. they have a top notch android phone coming out, for which they reap the benefits of sales. why would they chop that by catering to a phone that would only compete with their own sales, but they don't get sales money for? neither att nor tmo have a better phone right now.
btw, i love my nexus one. i can see why they would worry, lol. incredible is a nice phone, but the chick i'm hanging out with just got one, i played with it, and i prefer my N1, tbh
have to get a sprint phone for clinics though this june, so hoping the evo gets out early june phone n1, but evo for hanging out with and playing

If Sprint or Verizon doesn't want to subsidize the N1 because they want to push their own phone that's fine. But blocking an unlocked N1 from using their network just for the sake of being ****'s and forcing people into more expensive options? That's just bullsh*t and shouldn't be tolerated
Just because customers getting screwed happens in American business doesn't make it acceptable...

I partially agree with the OP here, it would be nice to have this across all carriers, but in all honesty, CDMA is just not something that is well supported outside the US. Having GSM is key since it is more the worldwide standard. I don't think not having CDMA is going to really hurt things for this device.

That makes no sense at all. Even if they didn't subsidize the phone, like AT&T, someone could buy the N1 100% with their own money, and then throw their money at Verizon/Sprint for the voice and data plans. All I could see is a net PLUS of subscribers on their networks. Now if someone reallly wants an N1, they'd be thinking T-Mobile / AT&T; a net LOSS of subscribers for Verizon/Sprint.

Verizon and Sprint have a much much more closed network than Att or T-mobile. They wan't entire control of what goes on the network.

Google changes plan, will stop selling Nexus One online.

Wow. just plain wow. Did not see this coming at all.
Google will stop selling it online, and instead will let the carriers sell the phone instead.
Reason? Google says it's because customers want a hands-on experience before buying the phone itself.
The online store was for early adopters+niche market.
Just to clarify things up: The Nexus One is not dead, it just won't be available online, only through carriers as stated by the employee:
More retail availability. As we make Nexus One available in more countries we’ll follow the same model we’ve adopted in Europe, where we're working with partners to offer Nexus One to consumers through existing retail channels. We’ll shift to a similar model globally.
From retail to viewing. Once we have increased the availability of Nexus One devices in stores, we'll stop selling handsets via the web store, and will instead use it as an online store window to showcase a variety of Android phones available globally.

It's different news tho. That one was an article on why Verizon probably didn't carry the Nexus One. This is google officially coming out to say they will stop selling it.
If it really is repetitive, then feel free to lock. 0.o
Does this mean we can finally get subsidized N1s? If so I'm going to sale my N1 while they are still worth something. Then use money to get subsidized one.
The ONLY thing Google has conceded, in no longer exclusively selling the N1 via website, is that people don't want to buy something site-unseen.
Nexus One lives on, but now will be more readily available for people to "kick the tires" before buying.

Interesting... I wonder how Google is going to get retail stores to showcase the N1? By Google paying the Retailers a portion of the profits for each one sold but maintaining control or by giving the retailers total control over the phone and the retailers paying Google for each N1 sold?
Thoughts?
Shoot, I'm keeping mine. They sold so few of them, it might someday be a collectors item.
So then how are AT&T versions of the N1 to be sold when AT&T clearly doesn't want to sell it?

FINALLY
Finally, we can stop seeing all these RETARDED articles about "awwwmagad was the nexus one a faylure!?!?"
NO!
The Nexus One was GREAT!!!! The store was not.
If it wasn't for the N1, phones like the Incredible or the Evo would most likely have come out much, much later than they did/will. It certainly raised the bar for "high-end" Android phones, and smartphones in general.
I'm also sad about this, because as attn1 mentioned, what's going to happen when carriers like AT&T don't want to carry a particular phone in the future?? Buying a phone through Google for AT&T was like a big "Hey AT&T, here's a /middle finger for you!"
AND not only does it allow phone manufacturers to make and sell a device without worrying about the carrier blocking it, but it allows for selling it worldwide without even taking into account WHICH carrier it's designed for. Grab the phone, use it in Canada, India, Europe, etc.
How many people on this forum would never have an N1 had it not been for the Google store?
Last but certainly not least, it also leaves the phone bloat-ware free! Can you imagine the Nexus Two with AT&T crapware and not being able to install non-market apps like the Backflop??
I really, really, really hope this isn't the last we've seen of the Google store. There are just too many benefits aside from the above three. At the least, I hope the Google Store will be an addition to carrier-sold phones.

Upgrade eligible form March lost

So, whoever it was on this site claiming to work for Sprint is likely full of it.
He assured people over and over that if your upgrade was before April 1st that you would NOT lose it.
I had an upgrade in March (save 150$). I lost it. All I have now is save 75$ or save 150$ in 273 more days.
Now that T-Mobile is going away, Sprint will likely do more stuff like this.
I bought my evo last year the day it was releqsed (i think june 4th)on contract and it shows Im eligible for the full $150

Because it's a bull****, underhanded, bait and switch move. Yeah Sprint is within their contractual "right" to rescind the incentive they offered so many thousands of people, but it's dirty pool man. In retrospect I do believe this was a calculated move to maximize new subscriptions with the EVO then turn around and sell more EVOs before the next big **** comes out.
A csr said to me "but sir, none of our competitors offer yearly upgrades".. Ma'am, none of your competitors offered yearly upgrades WHEN YOU OFFERED IT TO ME IN 2009!!
They have absolutely sent the message to this consumer "We know we're the best deal in town, if you want to go to Big Red or Hell (at&t) please BE OUR GUEST!, and fvck off while you're at it"
Of course I'm not leaving Sprint. IMO they have the best phone (just one, the evo, but I only need one phone) and I admit all this apparent collusion between Sprint and Google is very exciting.
In summary: Sprint, imo you're the best wireless service provide but why you gotta go **** blocking us loyal customers right before the hottest ***** in history hits the street??
That hurts my feelings, and I feel some serious e-blue-balls coming in a few months..
Ultimately I'll probably end up selling plasma (kidding) so I can buy the 3D at full price, but dammit you can't make me be happy about it!!

Just called, FIRST I would like to apologize if dirtyshroomz see's this. I am still eligible for an upgrade so I jumped the gun ALSO to let everyone know, for some reason my line that has $75 dollars off in September is going to be a full upgrade JULY of next year, so its no a full 12 months thought that was pretty cool!

Yeah that would be the "smarter" thing to do.....lol
I had a webchat with a sprint csr last week, and he said I had a full upgrade eligibility as of 7/1/11. I got my phone on 7/30/10.
On April 1st, i texted upgrade to '1311" and it said the same thing...$150 upgrade on 7/1/11.
Well I just logged onto the Sprint website and now they are saying 5/1/12. I guess no EVO 3D for me. Sprint's ETF are pretty small, so I imagine I'll just break contract and go somewhere else this summer.
Rule of thumb: Don't take the word of a guy who calls himself "DirtyShroomz" as gospel.

DirtyShroomz does work for Sprint, he's been around for a long time on these forums and he's helped a lot of people out.
Instead of your wild claims about how Dirty ruined your life, why don't you either:
a) PM him and work it out, or
b) at the very least, post a link or at least quote the "bad" information he gave you.
Starting a thread to specifically bash another user (especially one who goes out of his way to use his unique position and experience to help others, OFF the clock for free).... well that's just a low blow, man.
I'm not saying he didn't give you bad info, but I am saying you need to either post the specifics or keep your mouth shut.

How is T-mobile an improvement?
At least Sprint offers a way to get yearly upgrades...

Complete and utterly agree.

new timeline for HSUPA update

I just got off the phone with a rep from ATT who followed up with a complaint I filed with the BBB.
This guy was a lot nicer then past CSR's that I've talked to in the past. He informed me that ATT is aware of all the problems that people have had with the Atrix and the Inspire, and that an update coming up Late April and EARLY MAY will directly address our upload speeds.
So looks like we'll probably get our update at the end of MAY. I should have known that ATT couldn't commit to a whole MONTH to get an update out. Ridiculous. Oh well, the longer I wait, the easier it will be for me to get out of this ETF if I decide to switch.
I don't want to believe it but I think its true.

You say end of April and early May, then say end of May........................which is it? Early May could be May 1st!
We also have applications out already for testing the next update with Motorola, and that will more than likely start this weekend, with the update going live next week sometime if the last update test was anything to go by. That update is rumoured to address upload speeds by turning on HSUPA.
Personally, I wouldn't trust anything coming from a rep. They are there to make you feel good, especially when it relates to a complaint.

thread starter seems to have confused himself.
End of April/Early May is only a week or 2........ which would coincide with the recent emails of testing new software update. I say this is good news!!

Sorry guys, I should have clarified... The rep said beginning of May, but when I said end of May, I was inferring that ATT wasn't going to get us this update by the new timeline of early May, and that we would actually get it at the end of May because ATT would *probably* keep pushing back the update.
It's AT&T... the masters of stringing their customers along while they drag their feet.
I don't expect anything from them in April.
The SOAK tests haven't even been released yet, so there is no time for that testing to be completed and still make an end of April release date.
Considering the likely launch of the beta test of the upgrade, if there are no deal breaking new bugs introduced, they can release the update for everyone before end of April. But when implementing new stuff you never know if you introduced new bugs until you start testing it, so I guess that's why AT&T gave you a two week window for release.
This is of course assuming the update beta testers will get is related to the HSUPA.
I was just at our local corporate store on an unrelated issue. When I mentioned the HSUPA cap and my X10 has 4+ times the upload speed of the Atrix, he was completely thrown and didn't look like he even believed me. I didn't bother asking about the upgrade after that.

you have to remember that:
A- he probably uses an Iphone
B- he is a salesperson
C- 90% of AT&T salespeople are cashiers, not salesman. Meaning, if someone wants an iphone its "cash or charge?." they wont bother trying to get to know Android

While they are certainly not what I would call Android savvy, almost every rep in our local store carries android phones surprisingly.

Well said. Sadly enough he carries the Inspire and I would think he would be aware of the data cap.
they can still make it by end of april..when they BETA tested 1.5.7 they still had less than a week release to general public..and this time it isnt a beta it's a pre-release so it would be a shorter turn-around
I have found the average ATT rep, whether store, corporate, or janitor, to be quite uninformed when it comes to "release dates" or "technical knowledge"...regardless of what phone they carry.
I wish people would stop believing **** until it actually happens. When the updates comes out, it comes out. I wish people would stop guessing and speculating on when it's going to be released. ATT sales reps generally don't know when the updates are coming out, the one guy I talked to didn't even know what rooting meant.
Patience is not taught at a young age anymore it seems.

I think they just need something to whine and cry about once we got speed they'll fall back on bootloader issue..Im not a att or motorola fanboy but I know crying in a unconnected forum wont change anything we ALL elected to stick with the phone despite having the chance to return it..and if you filed a BBB complaint they would have taken phone back after the 30days...so basically we all signed off on the treatment and agreed to endure by keeping the device
Amazing how someone will actually believe what a CSR on the phone says. They stick to the script, or make things up as they go based on the same rumors we all hear.

Haha, quoted for truth! I was messing with a rep the one day at a local AT&T store asking him when Android 2.2* would be available for the Atrix, and he said later this year, most definitely, then I asked him when 4G will activated and he said 4G is already enabled, which obviously he is wrong on both counts.
I left the store after telling him that the Atrix already ships with 2.2 and he should read up on the products they sell. I don't know how the guy was able to keep his job.. I can take a **** that knows more about phones than that guy. Haha.
**For the hard headed... I KNOW WE HAVE ANDROID 2.2, I WAS OBVIOUSLY ****ING WITH THE SALES REP!

Is that exactly what he said.... basically word-for-word? "Late April and Early May"? Uuh... if that's the case, then i think it should be more like "late April AND early May"... and less the way you put it. Am i the only one that noticed the "and" in between april and may?

So I think you're directing this towards me, let me just explain my stance here..
Yeah I decided to keep the phone after my 30 day policy expired, my choice to do so or not.
My BBB complaint wasn't about "when I'm getting HSUPA" it was more on the constant lies, shadiness, and deceptive marketing practices that ATT employees were running by me. Most of them were uninformed, and a lot of them were very rude. The CSR that called me today was the nicest person I talked too on the phone. Other CSR's would say I'm lying, or I'm wrong when I accused of ATT crippling their phone (when in all actually ATT did, and admitted to it, not in those words). And almost every CSR rep would say I had the "wrong data plan" and that I would have to discontinue my unlimited data plan for a 4G tiered data plan to access higher download and upload speeds. Some even said I needed a new "sim" when I did have the new 4G sim already.
So the way I saw it, ATT was trying to pull more money out of me and crippling my data by making false claims.
And that was my BBB complaint in a nutshell. Sorry, when I deal with a business I'm paying $100 a month for, I'd expect their employees to be educated in their companies products and offerings. And if they don't know, then I'd expect them to find someone that does know, instead of pushing me towards other, more expensive services.
okay end /rant.
Can't wait till this bootloader is unlocked!
