Everyone is so angry that we don't have this feature active. I am as well but soley on principle. The truth is the average user wont notice any significant change in their data usage once we get hsupa unlocked on our phones. We will still have slow 3g speeds on our so called 4g phones. The only difference is you will be able to put your pictures up faster on Facebook. I think alot of people are confused as to what the update will unlock for us. I'm not here to bash because I love my atrix. Its one of the best pieces of hardware I have owned. I just wish we could get some vanilla android on it. So when they roll out the update and your wondering where your 4g speeds are at least youll have a heads up. Until att rolls out their back haul project we will still have slower than iPhone 3gs hspa speeds.

3GS doesn't have HSPA+ capabilities. You are right though. Most of us will not experience 4g speeds.
However, you are wrong in that hsupa only increases upload speeds. Hsupa helps decrease ping, from what I've seen, by half of what we get now. This shows for faster data downloads.
Also, nobody is going to be disappointed there upload speeds aren't capped anymore.
You're also right in that the average user won't notice a difference. But we're xda members here. We notice every thing.

For me it is somewhat on principle and somewhat on reality. I have a Xperia X10 with generic ROM and I easily get 1200 kbps upload speed, considering Sony got bashed for older technology and at&t discontinued it after around 6 months, I think it is totally ridiculous that my Atrix has 25% of its upload speed.
There is a very noticeable difference in upload time, it takes me way too long to upload pictures to picasa and I do that a lot, almost with every picture I take.
I love mine as well but I am really looking forward to the increased upload speeds.
My 2 cents.
Upload pics and video daily. I miss might iOS iPhone 4

Faster ping yes. Faster download...no....faster ping means faster connection to a download. Either way it shouldnt have been disabled. Yes were xda members but there is still prob 50% of the members that dont understand the diffference between data connections or speed. The 3gs isnt hspa+ capable but i used to get faster data speeds on mine than i do with my atrix. The 3gs was capable of 7.2 hsdpa speeds i believe?. So sad

Better ping means better everything. Second, our Atrix is capable of 14.4 down.
If you don't understand the value of lower ping with download speeds, than you don't understand how these things work.

Better ping will be a better overall online experience, you can't deny that.
I easily notice it when I take my SIM out of my Atrix and put it into my Milestone or Fascinate. Sometimes I have scramble for WiFi to get a better reliable connection. Why should I have to do that on a data plan?
The HSUPA update would definitely help...

Too bad none of us are average users then. Most average users don't know or don't care what HSUPA is or what it does. To them as long it says H+ ont heir phone, they don't care. Telling us we'll be disappointed is pointless, simply because we already know what's coming.
A few of us own multiple devices (myself included), and have experience with what HSUPA does and provides. I myself own an Inspire and Captivate as well as the Atrix, and HSUPA will definitely be a blessing.

True. But, for tethering, the HSUPA will make a difference. Thats all im looking forward to. I know that the DL speeds wont change...
The Atrix is hitting the market across the pond. suppose Moto doesn't want to have the "crippled phone" reputation still hanging out there. I would think that is why the update is coming from moto instead of att. At&t probably prefers that it not be done yet, they ain't ready. It will be more obvious when it's released on a network that doesn't have piss poor speeds like those in chubby's post. I use speedtest also, and seldom achieve the download speed he posts. Luvin AT&T. The Atrix is a wonderful device. I can't find much of anything good to say about our serviceless provider...
meh not like people here actually bought for the "4G speeds"(we know its BS) pretty sure we all looked at the dual core 1 gig ram and qHD display
At the AT&T store where I work my iPhone 4 used to pull upwards of 6mbps down, my Atrix MIGHT hit 2mbps. MAYBE.
I've always wondered why that is....
It's backplane that matters
Download/upload speed really depends on backplane speed, not just on phone. You can have super faster upload/download speed on your phone. But if the backplane is congested, you won't see that "4G" speed.
We are still in early stage of 4G rollout. So do not expect too much. The backplane has not been totally upgraded yet and there are congestions during peak hours.
I design network gear as a career and I see how much we are selling these stuff to cellphone carriers. They are expensive! Typical mid range edge routers are close to 1M a pop. Another word, do not expect AT&T becomes 4G overnight. They have to slowly upgrade these gears, and most of the time, they won't upgrade until the old gear becomes obsolete.
No way jose... its really quick! I'm getting around 1000 upload and around 3500 down! I'm sure you americans will be even faster when you get uncapped!

For those of you Bay Area kids that are jonesing as hard as I am for our 4G service, I did some testing while at work in Palo Alto today (where Clear has rolled out a special developer pocket of 4G service). I took some screenshots with the EVO 4G as my test device - and published a little write-up on my blog.
Give it a read.

I am from Santa Clara and i did notice how fast 4G can be.
However i did notice something with my 4G behavior and i was wondering if you noticed the same.
If i connect to 4G and the phone is idle (i.e. not using any app that requires data usage) the connection will drop and enter an endless reconnect loop where when it reconnects it will stay connected for 20 sec and drop again.
To avoid this i need to open an app that uses data (i.e. listen to internet radio) and then the connection will be stable.
Have you noticed this behavior as well?

Great read bro.
My fam lives up north. I figure its time for another run to the stockton , pittsburgh ,santa clara and fairfield area.
Can't wait!
Nice read. I live in Vallejo and one day after I received my Evo I too can drive to PA area for some 4G goodness!!! I have no regret ever now leaving At&t expensive monthly family plan (with corporate discounts) to Sprint Everything Family Data plan of $103 a month for two lines. Boy I'm going to enjoy this, BTW this Sprint Hero I have to hold me off until the Evo release is my first Android phone (always been on Win Mobile). Already having tons of fun with the 1.5 stock on the Hero and let alone the Evo with soon to be the latest Android I am super super pumped up. Hurry hurry up June 4th!!! LOL
I have a palm pre right now, and there is a bug between the ipod and my pre, it wont let me get any faster speeds than about 100 kbps. Youtube is out of the question. I'm on my 7th pre and thinking about switching to the hero, hoping that it can wifi tether full speeds.
Can anyone give me any info on tethering apple products to the htc hero?

The real question is, is it 100kbps, or 100kBps, because there is a very big difference. But yeah, as far as 3G goes, I've never gotten more then 150kBps.

btw, if that speed you are getting is true... WOW!
Pretty sure no Tmobile phone can get 10 meg download speeds even if on hspa+. I live in hspa+ and max my vibrant has gotten is 6meg down. Ive used the speedtest.net app and also the speedtest.net website while tethering also.
It amazes me the rudeness of this forum, where more bandwidth is spent on complaining about the bandwidth spent by so called stupid questions than on actually providing answers or helping people.
Anyway, back to topic. Even though t-mobile has enabled 21 mbps burst speeds on selected markets, a far as I'm concerned, the vibrant is limited by hardware to 7.2 or so. I think the upcoming G2 will be the first 21 mbps device on the market.
Speed tests are not very accurate in all cases. I remember when I had my touch pro 2 windows mobile device I would impress people by showing them it was able to download up to 12 mbps using a site called mobile speed test dot com. You simply repeated the test many times and progressively selected a bigger file size until you got those fabulous speeds.
I've found speed test app to be quite reliable, but if it shows speeds greater than 7 mbps, I wouldn't trust it.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Correct, the G2 will be the first hpsa+ phone but even then Im hearing its only going to be able to do 14.4mbps max not the full 21mbps. Still faster than any phone on any carrier so not too shabby. Just not full 21mbps.....yet!!!

Come on, now ... this post is about as deserving of helpful feedback as "I woke up this morning with a burning itch in the nether-regions." As others have noted, this could have been the result of WiFi being turned on or an artifact due to loop-back. The onus is on the OP to provide meaningful evidence which would rule out user error. We can't all break out our emergency kits every time someone thinks they're having a heart-attack ... "no, wait, it was just gas."

hi everyone
this is my bad news
i just got my nexus s
and i still own my galaxy s
now same phone provider(optus australia) same Apn setting this is speed result?
Galaxy S: 4.92 download
1.12 uploading
Nexus S: 2.21 download
1.05 uploading
what also i can see i got H on my Galaxy but only 3g on my Nexux s
well for sure this make the different i believe but why for the same Apn tested in the same place??
now we have to fing the answare
Mr Gee
The answer is that Google don't seem to like the H icon and therefore disables it. The phone still works fine on HSPA, it just doesn't display it.

Have you done multiple tests against multiple servers at different times of the day and averaged the results?
I can truly see a difference of 50% or more from one test to another sometimes, even when ran just a few minutes apart. Network traffic is just funny that way.
The other thing you might want to do to validate your comparisons is get the Antennas app from the Market (it's free) and make sure both phones are actually connecting to the same tower. They should be, but if you're in an overlapping tower area, they might not be due to load balancing by the network.
i will try

You will never see an H indicator on the Nexus S with the current stock firmwares. You'd need to flash a modded ROM or modify your frameworks file yourself to get it.
The phone is definitely capable of H speeds, though.

Have you guys called T-Mo customer service and asked them to look into the problem relative to your individual phone?
They'll probably tell you to try a new SIM card (if you're using the one you had on an older device).
The phone is capable of faster speeds than you're seeing. It should get comparable to a Vibrant.
my sim i three week old
i will try to swap with sim from gs and test again
to be continued
I'm going to start throatpunching people who ask this question.
Just because you don't see an "H" in the framework, doesn't mean you're not connecting to the HSDPA.
Start downloading something then type in *#*4636#*#* in the dialer. Look at "Phone Info" and watch the "Network Type." You'll notice a few seconds after it starts downloading, it'll switch from UMTS(3G) to HSDPA(also 3G).

I have both the SNS and the SGS
SGS is on Fido
SNS on Wind
both gets a top speed down speed of 2800+ Mbps
and aprox 800+ Mbps up stream
that just gives you an idea that the SNS works properly, it might simply be the capacity load of the cell tower you were connected to

Nothing wrong with the phones or SIM. Has to do with the modem. Flashing different modems on the vibrant have the same effect. Some modems are more aggressive, but use more battery. Nexus One stock gets same download speed as nexus S. I'm sure most NS and Vibrant will perform the same in the same geographical area.
BTW, you don't get the same download speeds everywhere. At home I get 2mbps but at work, about noon, I get close to 6 (with the vibrant) and close to 3 with NS.
In any case, 2mbps is pretty good. I won't go and exchange my phone because of that. I have learned to enjoy my NS as opposed to look for any possible thing that makes it not perfect in the eyes of "my friends"

So, screw you T-Mobile for trying to pull a fast one on us. Here at xda we are smarter then you! Lol

wrong on wifi i pulled almost 10mbps download and 1.5 upload
I have yet to see anyone come up with EXACTLY which chips are in the phone (guess I'll have to be the one to take a physical look).
It can be spec'd as one thing, show up in a software identifier as another, and still be a physically different chip with whatever capabilities.
It makes no sense at all that Slambung would have made a whole new circuit board to support this same CPU, the same screen, the same graphics, etc etc....
Even without looking I'm willing to wager money it's the same receiver chip with a simple disabled path or lane. Not a all difficult to limit the hardware in many ways (prom flash, disconnected pin, software, you name it). Very profitabable in the long run for a company to do so.
It's very funny to see all these people who say it's not possible because it was written down in the spec sheet that this is the limits of the hardware.
Heh, who wrote the spec sheet ?

I'm not so sure it is all the same. The new vibrant I thought I read will have a better screen then our originals, which would be the Super Amoled Plus screen. I may be wrong, but if it does have that screen which is suppose to get brighter and use less battery then I would assume the main board would be different also.

No you haven't.
Lemme guess: You tested at mobilespeedtest.net too, huh?
7.2 is as fast as this phone goes on cellular. Period.
Unless Axura replaces your hardware too...

Nowhere does it say that wifi is limited to 7.2mbps.
