For those of you Bay Area kids that are jonesing as hard as I am for our 4G service, I did some testing while at work in Palo Alto today (where Clear has rolled out a special developer pocket of 4G service). I took some screenshots with the EVO 4G as my test device - and published a little write-up on my blog.
Give it a read.

Thanks for posting this.
I am from Santa Clara and i did notice how fast 4G can be.
However i did notice something with my 4G behavior and i was wondering if you noticed the same.
If i connect to 4G and the phone is idle (i.e. not using any app that requires data usage) the connection will drop and enter an endless reconnect loop where when it reconnects it will stay connected for 20 sec and drop again.
To avoid this i need to open an app that uses data (i.e. listen to internet radio) and then the connection will be stable.
Have you noticed this behavior as well?

AT&T said it was because of the 3G connection.

I don't care enough to prove you wrong about every site you listed but Droiddog (the android section of Phonedog) is, in my opinion, the best Android news and review site on the web. You're basically saying the the entire Internet thinks Apple can do no wrong and that's just wrong.

I noticed a bit of this, but I think its mainly because the network is in its infancy and doesnt know how to handle idleness very well. At least you know of a work around.

My fam lives up north. I figure its time for another run to the stockton , pittsburgh ,santa clara and fairfield area.
Can't wait!
Nice read. I live in Vallejo and one day after I received my Evo I too can drive to PA area for some 4G goodness!!! I have no regret ever now leaving At&t expensive monthly family plan (with corporate discounts) to Sprint Everything Family Data plan of $103 a month for two lines. Boy I'm going to enjoy this, BTW this Sprint Hero I have to hold me off until the Evo release is my first Android phone (always been on Win Mobile). Already having tons of fun with the 1.5 stock on the Hero and let alone the Evo with soon to be the latest Android I am super super pumped up. Hurry hurry up June 4th!!! LOL

Folks, Not sure what to make it. I tried doing couple of speed tests with speakeasy.net tethering my laptop with samsung vibrant and I see consistently 10mb/sec download and 4mb/sec upload !!!!!. Im testing this in MY metro area
Is something wrong ??. Is speakeasy giving wrong info ??. Can someone in NY area check tethering speed ??. Looks like speak easy is downloading a 10mb file for test. What am I missing. i thought HSPA is max 7.2mb/sec theoretical.

"thejewhunter"? Really? I'm all for freedom of speech, but that's damn near a threat.
I really hope that means your a Jew that enjoys tracking and killing animals, otherwise you're a f*cking scumbag.
That is all.
its called HSPA+ i get 5mb down here in ftl u must be close or next to a antenna
I agree, get your anti semitism outta here....im personally insulted by a user using "jew hunter" as a user name. Your broadcasting your lack of intelligence by publicly expressing such views. Hope someone flames you or you get banned, a$$........

Settle down folks ... it's just a reference to a character in Inglourious Basterds. I'm not saying it's "appropriate" ... I'm just saying it wasn't as well thought out as you may have previously imagined. You're giving this user way too much credit.
"Speaking" of matters of intelligence, or lack thereof ... can we PLEASE differentiate between YOU'RE and YOUR? PLEASE? I really want to read people's posts but my brain stumbles upon these now all too familiar gems and refuses to finish reading.
Using swype on a virtual kb on the go, your is going to have to do....rest assured, I know the difference.
Although I know where the name came from, its completely out of context and entirely unnecessary. Choosing such a name further reinforces the lack of intelligence.
Same thing as using the N word as a user name, even though its used casually in some cases. Still insulting and unacceptable

How did the speed test become jew test?
btw, if that speed you are getting is true... WOW!
Pretty sure no Tmobile phone can get 10 meg download speeds even if on hspa+. I live in hspa+ and max my vibrant has gotten is 6meg down. Ive used the speedtest.net app and also the speedtest.net website while tethering also.
It amazes me the rudeness of this forum, where more bandwidth is spent on complaining about the bandwidth spent by so called stupid questions than on actually providing answers or helping people.
Anyway, back to topic. Even though t-mobile has enabled 21 mbps burst speeds on selected markets, a far as I'm concerned, the vibrant is limited by hardware to 7.2 or so. I think the upcoming G2 will be the first 21 mbps device on the market.
Speed tests are not very accurate in all cases. I remember when I had my touch pro 2 windows mobile device I would impress people by showing them it was able to download up to 12 mbps using a site called mobile speed test dot com. You simply repeated the test many times and progressively selected a bigger file size until you got those fabulous speeds.
I've found speed test app to be quite reliable, but if it shows speeds greater than 7 mbps, I wouldn't trust it.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Correct, the G2 will be the first hpsa+ phone but even then Im hearing its only going to be able to do 14.4mbps max not the full 21mbps. Still faster than any phone on any carrier so not too shabby. Just not full 21mbps.....yet!!!

You're probably getting some kind of false loopback or something.
use speedtest.net or dslreports.net speed tests and post your results.
Also, yes, the Vibrant is hardware limited to 7.2mbps.
It's possible the OP had WiFi enabled....

Come on, now ... this post is about as deserving of helpful feedback as "I woke up this morning with a burning itch in the nether-regions." As others have noted, this could have been the result of WiFi being turned on or an artifact due to loop-back. The onus is on the OP to provide meaningful evidence which would rule out user error. We can't all break out our emergency kits every time someone thinks they're having a heart-attack ... "no, wait, it was just gas."

Sprint Epic 4G Update Brings Faster Uploads Tomorrow

Forum member dshoem01 on Sprint's community forums has promised that the carrier will be releasing an update to the Sprint Epic 4G that will be coming tomorrow, September 30th, and will be rolled out over the air over four days. The firmware update should fix the slow upload speeds that Epic 4G owners have been experiencing, which caps their uploads to a measly 150 kbps on Sprint's 3G network. According to the forum post, "Good news - an update will be released tomorrow 9/30. It will be rolled out over a 4 day period so not everyone will get it on day 1. I will have the standard MR information (fixes included, rollout schedule, etc) available tomorrow morning and will post it in a new featured thread."

The only one I've ever experienced was the 3G upload. and it just isn't a big deal for me right now. Plus, fix is in the works.
People who have the market download problem didn't clear their cache before flashing a ROM. That's no one's fault except the person who flashed the ROM. The only time I've had anything fail in the market is when I was actively switching from wifi to 3g or vice versa. Download restarted fine with no issues.
GPS, sorry, just don't experience them. I apologize for those with them, but I just have not had an issue getting a lock when I'm outdoors. I travel to different stores everyday for work, and I've never had an issue navigating there. GPS/Maps way better on this phone than Hero, which frequently put me on some side road instead of the current one, and no one *****es about that phone's GPS issues.

I didn't have GPS issues at first, but eventually I started to experience it. The biggest problem though is the battery drain that can basically kill the whole thing in 4-5 hours.

Seriously, this update needs to fix the 3G battery drain that is killing this phone. Fixing the GPS would be nice too, but upload speeds are a distant third on the list of stuff that needs to be fixed ASAP...

This does not uncap the upload speed, it just doesn't route your internet traffic through a proxy anymore, after you change this.

Well I changed mine to eliminate the proxy and with 2bars of signal on 3g I got a ping of 145 with speedtest app also it now shows a server thats actually near me . The same server when I test the 4g speeds! That could bed the reason for a lower ping though

I know this question has been asked plenty of times before but I have some questions that I just cannot get a straight answer to. XDA came through for me with my HD2 and I hope I can get some guideance again.
Backstory....I got my HD2 all androided up with 2.2, ran up to my local "Simple Mobile" Store (Im sure most of you know, simple mobile is pretty much T-Mobile in disguise) and I got my phone activated. Then to smah my dreams, I find out I cant get signal at all within 10miles of my house. Although the phone is amazing when it does have signal.
So now, Im Looking into going back to MetroPCS because I have full signal with them every where I go, and Im looking at the Droid-X as my next phone porting Victim. However I cannot seem to find one solid guide on getting everything working properly. Some guides say everything but apps work, some say apps work but no mms, Is there one rock solid guide out there that will cover all aspects? Obviously I would like my phone to act just as it would on VZW, or as close as I can get. Secondly, Will I beable to get 3G or not? Im pretty sure MetroPCS does not have 3G(Atleast in Daytona Beach, FL), but some people keep saying they do. Lastly, Since im pretty sure that the answer to the last question will be a big fat NO, what kinds of internet speeds can I expect with Metro's network? Will apps like Pandora and Youtube Work? If so I know they will be slow, but just how slow are we talking?
Also, as a side question, are there any 4G LTE phones that can be ported over from verizon yet? Metro doesnt have the best selection of phones.
Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this for me. Im definately not a noob, but I'm sure as hell no expert either.
Sorry for being so wordy with my question
Edit: Also I have a friend willing to sell me a EVO for $100, Is it possible to get that phone working aswell, apps and all?
for droid x:

or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796257

I have actually Seen the Guide for the droid X, and the first one you posted for the EVO. However I haven't see the second EVO guide that you posted, so thank you for that one, that answered the EVO question.
My only other question is; What (if any) apps Will not function on metropcs? I do not live in a EVDO market so I wont have 3G. Will apps like Pandora, Youtube, and google maps work? and if they do what kind of experiences have peole had with them, are they tolerable, or are they so slow that their barely usable?

Do you think it will even be worth it?
While I myself am a total VZW Fanboy, if you have constant access to WiFi (college campus), it wouldn't be so bad.
Personally, the hassle isn't worth it for me and I'd rather pay the premium for a reliable network, but for others, maybe not .
Interestingly enough I am seriously considering going to VZW. However I know they are going to require a deposit from me, but it's almost worth it for me. On a side note, this is for me and my wife, so if i do end up biting the bullet and going with VZW do you know if it would be one deposit for the whole account, or one deposit per line? ATT wanted $500 per line.
But in the mean time im still stuck with metro, and I have 25Mb/s internet at my house so im covers there, but unfortunately no WiFi at work.
I am currently using droid x on metro. With it upgraded to leaked gingerbread everything works except picture messages which can work but is a little buggy. You can follow the guid at Howard forums for flashing. You do not need U2LN or AUTOSTAT files at all with gingerbread and since metro dos not use a proxy anymore....

So i'm working a long, boring 11 hour shift today and to help pass the time i'v been tethering my laptop to my EVO and watching netflix (dexter ) over 3g. Netflix is running surprisingly well considering my 3g speeds are crap my only concern is that I may be using too much data.
Is it reasonable for me to stream netflix for such an extended period of time or should I lay off for a little? Sprint is supposed to be the last phone company offering "truly unlimited" data so I personally don't see a problem with it, but I also don't want any trouble with sprint.
What do you guys think?
P.S I'm not feeling Dexter that much, seems a little over-hyped. Any recommended netflix streams to help me maintain sanity?

Wow I'm surprised it runs that well over 3g. I've tethered stuff when I have 4g before since I get it in certain areas where I live, but whenever I'm browsing the internet and going to places like youtube my 3g usually loads slower the the speed of the video.
My 3g doesn't seem terribly bad either, like 1mb down or so.
I was very surprised also of how well it streams over 3g. Pretty clear too.

Watch an old B/W movie. Requires less bandwidth. ;-)
Can anyone tell me how many gigs a 90 minute movie would be? Or if its megabytes that too.
So the whole family converted to iPhones last month.
I was going to sell my Evo, but while shopping for a smallish Android tablet, I had the idea of using my Evo as a tiny tablet. I think the Evo offers pretty much exactly what I was looking for albeit in a slightly smaller package than I wanted. However, it is in my possession now and does not require buying anything.
Is it possible to run w/o a cellular connection or is Sprint going to somehow lock me down?
If so, can someone please point me in the right direction to do so?
If you disconnect cellular service to the EVO it will work perfectly over wifi. My kids have a G1 that is only connected via wifi. Everything works from the market to talk to Google voice. Just tether from your iPhone to have all that on the go.

Yep, just turn on Airplane Mode on the evo first, then turn on wifi, and you can basically do anything you could before.

Or, if u have juice defender beta (I have Ultimate/Beta, not sure if necessary) u can enable tablet mode on it which disconnects cell service w/out touching bluetooth(airplane mode disables) or wifi all with CM7.1 Rom makes my evo the exact same as my GTab...
Excellent. I am very excited to play with this tonight. When the Evo was my main phone I never even rooted it. Time to play!
Thanks for the answers.

Hopefully you won't regret your iPhone purchase now that you get to have so much fun rooting and customizing that EVO. I wholeheartedly recommend MIUI to you as your first non-Sense based rom! Just root/wipe/flash and away you go. Enjoy the process brother, the world is now your oyster
