Ipod Speed test with Hero CDMA wifi tether - Hero CDMA General

I have a palm pre right now, and there is a bug between the ipod and my pre, it wont let me get any faster speeds than about 100 kbps. Youtube is out of the question. I'm on my 7th pre and thinking about switching to the hero, hoping that it can wifi tether full speeds.
Can anyone give me any info on tethering apple products to the htc hero?

The real question is, is it 100kbps, or 100kBps, because there is a very big difference. But yeah, as far as 3G goes, I've never gotten more then 150kBps.

I use mine daily, the hero is a nice upgrade from the pre...I had 5,nice o.s. crappy hardware

Also there's a hack that increases the pre download speeds, can't remember what its called but you could search precentral for it
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

I tether my hero to my netbook almost daily. I haven't ever had an issue with YouTube videos or anything else unless i was in a poor service area. At 360p the Videos load faster than it plays.
Using Tether for Root users I get about 1.3 mbps running Speedtest.net through my netbook while tethered. Its really nice. Thanks to all the work the Devs have done of course.

[Q] Need Mobile AP for DK28...

I know that this does not work on DK28 currently, but if anyone could get this to work it would be very helpful. This is the only thing keeping me from going back to 2.2. I need it for one of my computers when im not home. Here is the link for it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785719
The guy said he was gong to look into replacing the sprint mobile hotspot with this. If anyone could do this and possibly include it in there rom then I could go back to 2.2. I have seen a few post of people using 2.1 because they also don't have this for 2.2. I hope there is more interest and we can possibly get this done. I would try but I know nothing about how to do it.
Thanks in advance for anyone that is able to do this, or has interest in it.
FYI - I have gotten every wireless device in my house to see and use this app. (ps3, 3 laptops).
I'm on Mammon's Bonzai ROM and using the Sprint Hotspot app just fine. The only issue I'm having is that 4G drops when I get or make a call while using the hotspot.

assuming your paying for the feature as well. Ill take a stab and say he wants a free infrastructure hot spot, which I think as of right now is only possible on 2.1 odexed roms. The original porter of the i9000 ap said hell only port again on am official release. Cyanogen I believe also has it as a possibility, but its not yet working on our port. And the op of that thread says it won't be any time soon.

Also BTthomas is working on coding the mobile ap to work on 2.2 froyo deodexed roms and said he was making progress but is taking a break for the holidays, so we might see it soon maybe even b4 official froyo but have feeling that once the 2.2 source is out jr might make a new one and bt might have one faster for deodexed roms so ill give it a few months at least and we will probaly have it work on all roms

I doNt know about for the ps3 but I'm using wireless tether rc2 on froyo and it works great on my iPad and laptop. I had mobile ap before I updated and honestly wireless tether to me is just as fast. I haven't tried it on the ps3 though.

Wireless tether crawls in comparison, the loading of web pages on my computer is so slow with wireless tether, plus mobile ap doesn't get my phone hot even when charging, also when u connect multiple compters and devices to wireless tether it crawls more mobile ap I've connected 4 devices on 1x speed and 2 of them were streaming u tube in under a minute of loading, plus mobile ap is so much better looking and not an extra app u have to have its part of your settings and kicks ass plus it works superbly on 4g when wiress tether doesnt...

Cool thanks for all the info on this. Yes looking for a free alternative. I only need it about once a week for a few minutes. The Google cr-48 only does infrastructure mode. Kinda sucks but I need it when I'm out and there is no wifi. Haven't activated the Verizon 3g built in yet. Just want an alternative to it since I have the phone, but then again I probably wont go through the 100mb limit it comes with. I use the computer for school so I have to make sure I have internet in case I run out.

[Q] Whats your speed like on your rooted shift using wireless tether for root users?

So on my permrooted Shift with 4G antenna on and max signal (middle of NYC) I can easily tether to my laptop. However, once tethered and running a speedtest I'm only downloading at a meager .50 Mbs! The speedtest directly from the phone is upwards of 8. Is this the experience of everyone else so far as well? Perhaps we need to wait on a new kernel or the app itself to be updated?
Thank you!
Same for me. I am in Minneapolis. I get pretty much 3G speeds even on 4G. I am just glad it would work in a pinch. Maybe the wireless tether app needs an update I am thinkinh.
yeah unfortunately for me I was hoping to be able to use this as my primary internet source. Oh well I know there was a fix that came out for the evo, I'm sure something similar will be found for the shift.
Yes my speeds are terribly slow!

Alright...I'm in it for 10 bucks. Will report findings.
edit:
Although using EasyTether registers much faster speeds on a speedtest (almost 5 Mbs), it's FAR from stable. The hangups cause it to run about as slow as using wireless tether for root users.
My advice is to stay away from EasyTether and save your money. The boys at EasyTether will have a fix or we'll see some code to change up the system like was available on the evo to max it out.
I'm getting my money back lol.

You will be disappointed by hsupa

Everyone is so angry that we don't have this feature active. I am as well but soley on principle. The truth is the average user wont notice any significant change in their data usage once we get hsupa unlocked on our phones. We will still have slow 3g speeds on our so called 4g phones. The only difference is you will be able to put your pictures up faster on Facebook. I think alot of people are confused as to what the update will unlock for us. I'm not here to bash because I love my atrix. Its one of the best pieces of hardware I have owned. I just wish we could get some vanilla android on it. So when they roll out the update and your wondering where your 4g speeds are at least youll have a heads up. Until att rolls out their back haul project we will still have slower than iPhone 3gs hspa speeds.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
3GS doesn't have HSPA+ capabilities. You are right though. Most of us will not experience 4g speeds.
However, you are wrong in that hsupa only increases upload speeds. Hsupa helps decrease ping, from what I've seen, by half of what we get now. This shows for faster data downloads.
Also, nobody is going to be disappointed there upload speeds aren't capped anymore.
You're also right in that the average user won't notice a difference. But we're xda members here. We notice every thing.
Swyped from my Motorola Atrix 4g using XDA Premium App
For me it is somewhat on principle and somewhat on reality. I have a Xperia X10 with generic ROM and I easily get 1200 kbps upload speed, considering Sony got bashed for older technology and at&t discontinued it after around 6 months, I think it is totally ridiculous that my Atrix has 25% of its upload speed.
There is a very noticeable difference in upload time, it takes me way too long to upload pictures to picasa and I do that a lot, almost with every picture I take.
I love mine as well but I am really looking forward to the increased upload speeds.
My 2 cents.
Upload pics and video daily. I miss might iOS iPhone 4

Faster ping yes. Faster download...no....faster ping means faster connection to a download. Either way it shouldnt have been disabled. Yes were xda members but there is still prob 50% of the members that dont understand the diffference between data connections or speed. The 3gs isnt hspa+ capable but i used to get faster data speeds on mine than i do with my atrix. The 3gs was capable of 7.2 hsdpa speeds i believe?. So sad

Better ping means better everything. Second, our Atrix is capable of 14.4 down.
If you don't understand the value of lower ping with download speeds, than you don't understand how these things work.

Better ping will be a better overall online experience, you can't deny that.
I easily notice it when I take my SIM out of my Atrix and put it into my Milestone or Fascinate. Sometimes I have scramble for WiFi to get a better reliable connection. Why should I have to do that on a data plan?
The HSUPA update would definitely help...

Too bad none of us are average users then. Most average users don't know or don't care what HSUPA is or what it does. To them as long it says H+ ont heir phone, they don't care. Telling us we'll be disappointed is pointless, simply because we already know what's coming.
A few of us own multiple devices (myself included), and have experience with what HSUPA does and provides. I myself own an Inspire and Captivate as well as the Atrix, and HSUPA will definitely be a blessing.

True. But, for tethering, the HSUPA will make a difference. Thats all im looking forward to. I know that the DL speeds wont change...
The Atrix is hitting the market across the pond. suppose Moto doesn't want to have the "crippled phone" reputation still hanging out there. I would think that is why the update is coming from moto instead of att. At&t probably prefers that it not be done yet, they ain't ready. It will be more obvious when it's released on a network that doesn't have piss poor speeds like those in chubby's post. I use speedtest also, and seldom achieve the download speed he posts. Luvin AT&T. The Atrix is a wonderful device. I can't find much of anything good to say about our serviceless provider...
meh not like people here actually bought for the "4G speeds"(we know its BS) pretty sure we all looked at the dual core 1 gig ram and qHD display
At the AT&T store where I work my iPhone 4 used to pull upwards of 6mbps down, my Atrix MIGHT hit 2mbps. MAYBE.
I've always wondered why that is....
It's backplane that matters
Download/upload speed really depends on backplane speed, not just on phone. You can have super faster upload/download speed on your phone. But if the backplane is congested, you won't see that "4G" speed.
We are still in early stage of 4G rollout. So do not expect too much. The backplane has not been totally upgraded yet and there are congestions during peak hours.
I design network gear as a career and I see how much we are selling these stuff to cellphone carriers. They are expensive! Typical mid range edge routers are close to 1M a pop. Another word, do not expect AT&T becomes 4G overnight. They have to slowly upgrade these gears, and most of the time, they won't upgrade until the old gear becomes obsolete.
No way jose... its really quick! I'm getting around 1000 upload and around 3500 down! I'm sure you americans will be even faster when you get uncapped!

[Q] Questions about Droid X on Metro PCS

I know this question has been asked plenty of times before but I have some questions that I just cannot get a straight answer to. XDA came through for me with my HD2 and I hope I can get some guideance again.
Backstory....I got my HD2 all androided up with 2.2, ran up to my local "Simple Mobile" Store (Im sure most of you know, simple mobile is pretty much T-Mobile in disguise) and I got my phone activated. Then to smah my dreams, I find out I cant get signal at all within 10miles of my house. Although the phone is amazing when it does have signal.
So now, Im Looking into going back to MetroPCS because I have full signal with them every where I go, and Im looking at the Droid-X as my next phone porting Victim. However I cannot seem to find one solid guide on getting everything working properly. Some guides say everything but apps work, some say apps work but no mms, Is there one rock solid guide out there that will cover all aspects? Obviously I would like my phone to act just as it would on VZW, or as close as I can get. Secondly, Will I beable to get 3G or not? Im pretty sure MetroPCS does not have 3G(Atleast in Daytona Beach, FL), but some people keep saying they do. Lastly, Since im pretty sure that the answer to the last question will be a big fat NO, what kinds of internet speeds can I expect with Metro's network? Will apps like Pandora and Youtube Work? If so I know they will be slow, but just how slow are we talking?
Also, as a side question, are there any 4G LTE phones that can be ported over from verizon yet? Metro doesnt have the best selection of phones.
Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this for me. Im definately not a noob, but I'm sure as hell no expert either.
Sorry for being so wordy with my question
Edit: Also I have a friend willing to sell me a EVO for $100, Is it possible to get that phone working aswell, apps and all?
for droid x:

I have actually Seen the Guide for the droid X, and the first one you posted for the EVO. However I haven't see the second EVO guide that you posted, so thank you for that one, that answered the EVO question.
My only other question is; What (if any) apps Will not function on metropcs? I do not live in a EVDO market so I wont have 3G. Will apps like Pandora, Youtube, and google maps work? and if they do what kind of experiences have peole had with them, are they tolerable, or are they so slow that their barely usable?

Do you think it will even be worth it?
While I myself am a total VZW Fanboy, if you have constant access to WiFi (college campus), it wouldn't be so bad.
Personally, the hassle isn't worth it for me and I'd rather pay the premium for a reliable network, but for others, maybe not .
Interestingly enough I am seriously considering going to VZW. However I know they are going to require a deposit from me, but it's almost worth it for me. On a side note, this is for me and my wife, so if i do end up biting the bullet and going with VZW do you know if it would be one deposit for the whole account, or one deposit per line? ATT wanted $500 per line.
But in the mean time im still stuck with metro, and I have 25Mb/s internet at my house so im covers there, but unfortunately no WiFi at work.
I am currently using droid x on metro. With it upgraded to leaked gingerbread everything works except picture messages which can work but is a little buggy. You can follow the guid at Howard forums for flashing. You do not need U2LN or AUTOSTAT files at all with gingerbread and since metro dos not use a proxy anymore....

Tethering netflix through 3g

So i'm working a long, boring 11 hour shift today and to help pass the time i'v been tethering my laptop to my EVO and watching netflix (dexter ) over 3g. Netflix is running surprisingly well considering my 3g speeds are crap my only concern is that I may be using too much data.
Is it reasonable for me to stream netflix for such an extended period of time or should I lay off for a little? Sprint is supposed to be the last phone company offering "truly unlimited" data so I personally don't see a problem with it, but I also don't want any trouble with sprint.
What do you guys think?
P.S I'm not feeling Dexter that much, seems a little over-hyped. Any recommended netflix streams to help me maintain sanity?

Wow I'm surprised it runs that well over 3g. I've tethered stuff when I have 4g before since I get it in certain areas where I live, but whenever I'm browsing the internet and going to places like youtube my 3g usually loads slower the the speed of the video.
My 3g doesn't seem terribly bad either, like 1mb down or so.
I was very surprised also of how well it streams over 3g. Pretty clear too.
