Tethering netflix through 3g - EVO 4G General

So i'm working a long, boring 11 hour shift today and to help pass the time i'v been tethering my laptop to my EVO and watching netflix (dexter ) over 3g. Netflix is running surprisingly well considering my 3g speeds are crap my only concern is that I may be using too much data.
Is it reasonable for me to stream netflix for such an extended period of time or should I lay off for a little? Sprint is supposed to be the last phone company offering "truly unlimited" data so I personally don't see a problem with it, but I also don't want any trouble with sprint.
What do you guys think?
P.S I'm not feeling Dexter that much, seems a little over-hyped. Any recommended netflix streams to help me maintain sanity?

You don't need to worry about. You will be good.

Wow I'm surprised it runs that well over 3g. I've tethered stuff when I have 4g before since I get it in certain areas where I live, but whenever I'm browsing the internet and going to places like youtube my 3g usually loads slower the the speed of the video.
My 3g doesn't seem terribly bad either, like 1mb down or so.

I was very surprised also of how well it streams over 3g. Pretty clear too.

Check out Trailer Park Boys....
Its shot in the same style as The Office and Parks&Recreation but its super vulgar
I too am very surprised at streaming over 3G..... epicness!

Should be fine. Especially considering u could also use the Netflix app. Imo I pay for unlimited, not "unlimited".

Yeah, netflix did a great job with their live streaming service.
I'm checking out some of the shows you guys recommended, thanks!

Now if I could just get Netflix working my BOS Kingdom rom, I'll be set!!

its should be ok spring is really lax on things like this

Watch an old B/W movie. Requires less bandwidth. ;-)

Can anyone tell me how many gigs a 90 minute movie would be? Or if its megabytes that too.

4G in the Bay Area (California)

For those of you Bay Area kids that are jonesing as hard as I am for our 4G service, I did some testing while at work in Palo Alto today (where Clear has rolled out a special developer pocket of 4G service). I took some screenshots with the EVO 4G as my test device - and published a little write-up on my blog.
Give it a read.

Thanks for posting this.
I am from Santa Clara and i did notice how fast 4G can be.
However i did notice something with my 4G behavior and i was wondering if you noticed the same.
If i connect to 4G and the phone is idle (i.e. not using any app that requires data usage) the connection will drop and enter an endless reconnect loop where when it reconnects it will stay connected for 20 sec and drop again.
To avoid this i need to open an app that uses data (i.e. listen to internet radio) and then the connection will be stable.
Have you noticed this behavior as well?

AT&T said it was because of the 3G connection.

Great read bro.
My fam lives up north. I figure its time for another run to the stockton , pittsburgh ,santa clara and fairfield area.
Can't wait!
Nice read. I live in Vallejo and one day after I received my Evo I too can drive to PA area for some 4G goodness!!! I have no regret ever now leaving At&t expensive monthly family plan (with corporate discounts) to Sprint Everything Family Data plan of $103 a month for two lines. Boy I'm going to enjoy this, BTW this Sprint Hero I have to hold me off until the Evo release is my first Android phone (always been on Win Mobile). Already having tons of fun with the 1.5 stock on the Hero and let alone the Evo with soon to be the latest Android I am super super pumped up. Hurry hurry up June 4th!!! LOL

Ipod Speed test with Hero CDMA wifi tether

I have a palm pre right now, and there is a bug between the ipod and my pre, it wont let me get any faster speeds than about 100 kbps. Youtube is out of the question. I'm on my 7th pre and thinking about switching to the hero, hoping that it can wifi tether full speeds.
Can anyone give me any info on tethering apple products to the htc hero?

The real question is, is it 100kbps, or 100kBps, because there is a very big difference. But yeah, as far as 3G goes, I've never gotten more then 150kBps.
I use mine daily, the hero is a nice upgrade from the pre...I had 5,nice o.s. crappy hardware

Also there's a hack that increases the pre download speeds, can't remember what its called but you could search precentral for it

I tether my hero to my netbook almost daily. I haven't ever had an issue with YouTube videos or anything else unless i was in a poor service area. At 360p the Videos load faster than it plays.
Using Tether for Root users I get about 1.3 mbps running Speedtest.net through my netbook while tethered. Its really nice. Thanks to all the work the Devs have done of course.

Unfortunately netflix app won't work due to hardware limitations of the snapdragon. But newer snap dragon processors will work. This app makes it possible for us unless Qualcomm is lieing about the hardware limitation.

I am fascinated and captivated by the vibrant screen on my epic galaxy s.
Just flashed bionix-v today on my vibrant. I was using bionix fusion 1.2 before and that was great, but so far this rom is amazing and has FROYO!!!
I recently cancelled my cable tv and have replaced it with Netflix and PlayOn. What's even better is that PlayOn streams Netflix, Hulu, my Amazon VOD, and all the other great channels and plugins right to my phone now from anywhere!
I didn't buy PlayOn right away because of the price, but signed up for their newsletter and jumped on a deal for 1 free month and $20 for the first year and then just $20 every year after that.
Can you tell i'm just a little excited?
Unimpressed. All this does is stream from those websites to your PC which then streams to your phone. Yawn. I can already do this with RDP/PC and access all websites that can stream to my PC.
Would be great if it streamed direct to phone via WIFI/3G.

Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't up to date on the data cap. Can't wait until cell phone companies and ISPs merge to meet the demands that will inevitably be plaguing them so that they can better fulfill the needs of their media hungry customers.

MLB.tv: No Streaming for Epic 4G

Well - thank you Samsung.
MLB.tv updated the AtBat2011 app today to include live streaming on Android devices. Woohoo, right?
Well, not so much. Because Samsung has delayed the official FroYo release for the Epic, the Evo is the only Sprint Device that is supported for live video streaming. Of course, I'm sure my ACS FrozenROM could handle the requirements, but because the Epic isn't officially supported the video option doesn't even show up.
I doubt there are any tricks to spoof device ID, but if anybody has any ideas, that would be great.
Otherwise, I just have one more reason not to buy another Samsung device again. Or, more properly, one more reason to be upset about the FroYo release (or lack thereof).
Here's the link to the app: https://market.android.com/details?...android.gameday.atbat2011.full&feature=banner
I feel your pain on this one. I got the update this morning and was psyched about it. But I was quickly let down when I notice my Epic wouldn't work!!
Thanks for this update. I almost bought it yesterday, then I saw that MLB partnered up with Apple for a free month trial for iPhone users. Hoping for the same Android deal, I see that it's wrought with problems still and not ready for primetime.
The Nexus S is supported, so is there a way to spoof the Epic as a Nexus S? I thought I remember seeing somewhere that one of the ROMs was using a modified market using a Nexus S identifier. Could the same approach be used here?
LIVE GAMES!? GET THIS TO WORK, NOW!!!! I always loved getting the radio feeds but if I can get the actual games, I'd freak the hell out...
speaking of that...when i goto mlb.com on a winmo device..gameday doesnt drop down anymore???? i havent found a way for gameday to come up on the epic, if there is one. but i also would love to listen to the games, anyway to do this on the epic??
Yea, the MLB app. It's $14 but well worth it if you use it as much as I do. I'm dying for live stream of games.

If you can afford it, get Slingbox. They run from $150 to $250... The Solo (the lesser priced one- beware) has some issue with capacitors.. Anything that you can get on your TV can easily be forwarded to your device. I have an Epic, as well. Slingbox forwards me my MLB account (from Roku)... I also get Netflix, Hulu Plus, and lots of other stuff.. music YouTube, International News, etc. If I have a net connection, I can watch and listen to anything on my TV or Roku
To afford all this, I cut my Uverse account back to basic at $19 a month plus box rental. I was spending $90 a month prior to hooking up Roku and Slingbox. One time investment only for Slingbox and Roku. You will have to fork out the $29 for the Slingbox Mobile for Android app to accomplish this. It includes clever remote control codes to manipulate your TV and other hardware at home.
MLB looks fabulous on Roku this year. Last year, it was problematic. This year, great.
You'll be watching the World Series and all the playoff games without forking out any more money. It's a great way to go. Im saving a lot of money. I use it off and on when work is slow.. watch a couple innings, etc.. When we travel, I use it.. .I also use the Sling software on my laptop.

So I went ahead and installed CM7 Alpha 1 to see if that works, but no such luck. When I go to my account on the market (web version) it shows the phone as a Samsung SPH-D700 under Model. When I'm on another ROM it shows up as just SPH-D700 and the manufacturer is the same in both cases (Samsung)

[Q] Questions about Droid X on Metro PCS

I know this question has been asked plenty of times before but I have some questions that I just cannot get a straight answer to. XDA came through for me with my HD2 and I hope I can get some guideance again.
Backstory....I got my HD2 all androided up with 2.2, ran up to my local "Simple Mobile" Store (Im sure most of you know, simple mobile is pretty much T-Mobile in disguise) and I got my phone activated. Then to smah my dreams, I find out I cant get signal at all within 10miles of my house. Although the phone is amazing when it does have signal.
So now, Im Looking into going back to MetroPCS because I have full signal with them every where I go, and Im looking at the Droid-X as my next phone porting Victim. However I cannot seem to find one solid guide on getting everything working properly. Some guides say everything but apps work, some say apps work but no mms, Is there one rock solid guide out there that will cover all aspects? Obviously I would like my phone to act just as it would on VZW, or as close as I can get. Secondly, Will I beable to get 3G or not? Im pretty sure MetroPCS does not have 3G(Atleast in Daytona Beach, FL), but some people keep saying they do. Lastly, Since im pretty sure that the answer to the last question will be a big fat NO, what kinds of internet speeds can I expect with Metro's network? Will apps like Pandora and Youtube Work? If so I know they will be slow, but just how slow are we talking?
Also, as a side question, are there any 4G LTE phones that can be ported over from verizon yet? Metro doesnt have the best selection of phones.
Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this for me. Im definately not a noob, but I'm sure as hell no expert either.
Sorry for being so wordy with my question
Edit: Also I have a friend willing to sell me a EVO for $100, Is it possible to get that phone working aswell, apps and all?
for droid x:

just got these from a quick google search. there are lots of other guides
I have actually Seen the Guide for the droid X, and the first one you posted for the EVO. However I haven't see the second EVO guide that you posted, so thank you for that one, that answered the EVO question.
My only other question is; What (if any) apps Will not function on metropcs? I do not live in a EVDO market so I wont have 3G. Will apps like Pandora, Youtube, and google maps work? and if they do what kind of experiences have peole had with them, are they tolerable, or are they so slow that their barely usable?

Do you think it will even be worth it?
While I myself am a total VZW Fanboy, if you have constant access to WiFi (college campus), it wouldn't be so bad.
Personally, the hassle isn't worth it for me and I'd rather pay the premium for a reliable network, but for others, maybe not .
Interestingly enough I am seriously considering going to VZW. However I know they are going to require a deposit from me, but it's almost worth it for me. On a side note, this is for me and my wife, so if i do end up biting the bullet and going with VZW do you know if it would be one deposit for the whole account, or one deposit per line? ATT wanted $500 per line.
But in the mean time im still stuck with metro, and I have 25Mb/s internet at my house so im covers there, but unfortunately no WiFi at work.
I am currently using droid x on metro. With it upgraded to leaked gingerbread everything works except picture messages which can work but is a little buggy. You can follow the guid at Howard forums for flashing. You do not need U2LN or AUTOSTAT files at all with gingerbread and since metro dos not use a proxy anymore....
