I feel like a lot of the issues that have been caused with android could be solved by this simple solution, if every company gave the option to allow us to use their custom android, or we could also have the choice of having just plain vanilla android. This would be easy for them, and would also solve a great deal of user issues...

I agree.....one thing that bothers me about android is all the manufacturers adding there custom skins on top of the android platform...while there sometimes nice...they also have a tendency to bog down the system and cause lag.
Perfect example, and Im sure youll love to hear this is "Timescape" haha.
But I guess one thing that seperates my phone from "his" phone is the custom skins that they use.
But the option for "android at its purest" should be there for ALL devices.
to be honest i don't see how this can benefit all user groups
the problem we have with our x10s now is not that we have a totally customised firmware, it's the fact that we have an encrypted bootloader, which samsung/htc/some other manufacturers don't have.
the only solution is either sony ericsson somehow unlock the bootloader for us or we crack the code that locks up the bootloader.

Im pretty sure were on our own for cracking the bootloader
I think that offering Vanilla android for those that want it would be good. I can't think of a reason why SE (or anyone else!) couldn't do that.

people that don't root would be able to still get a regular version of android with everything working...

hi all, i think the manufactures should kkep the option of personalize their product, but google should have some regulations for android in order to work better,i'm not an expert but in that way al of us win.
regarding the problems with cracking the x10 bootloader,i dont expect it woul be easy for the coming xperia family,so after i see how good are the htc or samsung new smart phones i'll be buying one,too bad coz i have been using sony ericsson phones for the last 5 yrs and no problem, even with the x10 i have no real problems but the fact that it can't be fully custumize it really bothers me since that is the whole point of an android phone, isn't it? peace.
cracking bootloader is next to impossible coz Sony has learnt from past and now they dont take any chance.

Ahh yes but the kernal was changed when we flashed 2.1 right? What he's saying is that they could release vanilla like that. Then if they choose they could provide an option for their custom firmware. But the key with this is that even if they didn't want to keep making custom firmwares for a phone they are phasing out supplying a working vanilla wouldn't take near the effort to implement for further updates. So they could release se custom 2.1 as their final release but still provide vanilla 2.2, 2.3 etc.

I agree that the phone companies want to keep their customizations as it's what differentiates them from the competition, and gives the device its own identity. Google is making improvements to allow Android to work around the skins to avoid the phone companies having to scramble behind them with every update.
I am sure someone, possibly Google, will shortly be coming out with a fully generic "developers" device just as you described.

There is an option for that, if you want pure vanilla, either go to an ice-cream stand or Nexus S
Companies do the customization to differentiate their devices from others
But it's not a bad idea though

My whole point is you would still have the option to have their custom skin though! You just wouldn't be lost in the dust with updates b/c of companies choosing not to update their skins however, or if a skin was terrible you wouldn't have to root (for those less tech savvy folk)
They ( all companies ) fixed that problem with 2.3
So everything now works with Android's applications instead of creating different application that works independently ( similar to mediascape in 2.1 )
So with or without root you can choose your favourite app as default
I understand what you meant, giving an example, companies can have an easy setup on first start with two options like ( option A: use vanilla UI, option B: use manufacturer's UI ) so everyone can go with what he/she wants

What then would happen with the customizations for the hardware such as the camera? I can't see SE for example putting a 8 megapixil camera in a device and then not supporting its features.
All it would need would be the camera drivers. That wouldn't be any work for their dev team...
Following along...if they had done this with the X10, what you would have would still be vanilla 2.1 with the bootloader locked or no? The bootloader and camera drivers would still be needed for any custom ROMs.
Yes.... Do you understand this thread? Instead of having a slow bogged down customized android version you could choose to have plain vanilla instead. It would solve a lot about issues like lagging, and also for updates (they could easily send out a vanilla update, would bypass the "development time" everyone uses to excuse sony for stopping at 2.1).
The company putting their camera drivers into it wouldn't be any work (if that would even be needed, freex10 and wolfbreak's cm both have better quality camera than stock 2.1)...
That first sentence wasn't necessary. It only shows how limited your social skills are in an open discussion, especially one that you started.
Yes, I understand the thread. Did you understand my post is the question? I was asking if you meant the vanilla version would be current regardless of what version the skinned version, because now you're adding that they would be two separate ROMs, rather than a bogged down laggy version and the vanilla version as you put it. Gezz.
Hi, i just read this at the htc facebook page:
There has been overwhelmingly
customer feedback that people want
access to open bootloaders on HTC
phones. I want you to know that we've
listened. Today, I'm confirming we will
no longer be locking the bootloaders
on our devices. Thanks for your
passion, support and patience," Peter
Chou, CEO of HTC
That is a good thing. But the announcement is for future phones. No official news about the old ones with locked bootloaders.

ok no prob i will drop the wilfire an i will buy somthing from samung or lg...
htc has no respect for customers ok htc if you dont unlock older phones too i will walk... they are many fishes out there......

Lets be fair, i don't see how 'as you put it' (the unlock older devices is bad for htc marketing and will decrease the selling on they new devices) is true.
And while i do not know, perhaps there not unlocking older phones because logistically they can't, i mean can it be done with a simple downloadable software upgrade? or would they need to modify each phone individually, and if so who in there right mind would expect them to do that?
HTC have said they will stop locking the boot loaders and if that is the case they deserve credit for that, at least they do listen to there customers, many others are to arrogant to.
my respect for HTC has been restored.

Mostly it can be done with an ota update. Because they had their signature. Im not 100% sure of it.
Or atleast, it can be done by some extra software provided by them. But if they wish to unlock wildfire, then definitely it will not be a harder process for them. And moreover it will not take much time also for them to unlock.
It is more of a decision to unlock than the process to unlock.

the only thing the mast do it's to compile a new ota update with new(some in act) bootloader without htc signature (unsigned bootloader)
5 minutes job for every locked phone
and is bad for htc to unlock old phone bevause with unlocked phone i will install a latest rom i will overclock and more and i will have this phone perhap for one more year.... the other if the old devices remain locked i will need to buy another device to meet my requirements.....
but htc made a one mistake in all situation yes i will buy a new phone... but no a htc phone... does not respect the consumer with policy to "leave older devices locked"
(soz again for bad english)
As the mather of fact, I beleve that they can just release the encription key they they use to sign there ROMs, making it posible to "sign" our own ROMs. So then they don't even have to modify every bootloader so that it doesn't check the signature.
But I don't blame htc for not doing it. They have already gained my respect by changing there policy so quickly (but perhaps even that was there intension the whole time: making us think that we forced something while it was already decided ), but a really don't expect them to do something that would cut in there fingers like that
But who knows, I didn't thought it would be possible to force htc' policy change so fast in the first place, so I do not realy have any rights to speak

I think we can expect them to release their signature/encryption key if they no longer use the signature check process in the upcoming devices. And if they need signature for any other things in upcoming devices they will have to create another signature increasing the encryption. And if signature is released mostly it helps to flash custom recovery only, i expect (don't know if custom recovery is flashed in this way with S-ON is the device rooted or not ?. I think not ). And here engineering the HBOOT is again risky (possibility of brick).
But eventhough i agree its not fair to ask htc for signature. And even if we attempt to ask them the signature, it is really a tougher job. I think almost impossible. And probably they might not be doing it because if it was released, everyone tries to do experiments using it and bricking their phones ultimately gathering all the phones at their service centers.
I just know from how I see it.
I bought a wildfire a cheap model to see what HTC was all about. It was my first android phone too. So I was wondering what I could do with it.
Heared a lot of interesting statements from others that had HTC phones.
Then I wanted to do a little more with my phone. change how it looks and so on. Guess what I could not.
This results in HTC failing to convince me to buy another model in the fututre as I know what I want to do can be done if I buy another brand.
So keeping the older bootloaders locked = no future sales for HTC going my way.
So keeping older bootloaders locked will in fackt not increase sales on fututre phones.

This doesn't apply for the hd2
cant we get HTC to now make an Official Android ROM for our phone !!!

Support this : http://www.groubal.com/htc-bootloaders-and-nand/
What is the point of this?
The idea of this is to convince htc to unlock the bootloaders and disable the NAND protection on their phones
Why should I support this?
Unlocking the bootloader and disabling the NAND protection will allow users to keep their phones up to date using custom roms such as CM7.
P.S. HTC support is silly as always lol...)))
Well Done tzacapaca

not too much help from him though,he didn't know the answer...lol
they should hire XDA developers!
Good news. This would be a way to have Android in NAND in the future.
Maybe that helps our developers with other things too.
But, tzacapaca, CM7 has nothing to do with the bootloader

We wanted to provide an update on HTC’s progress with bringing bootloader unlocking to our newest phones. We know how excited some of you are for this capability, and we’ve put significant resources behind making this change as soon as possible. While we wish we could flip a simple switch and unlock all bootloaders across our device portfolio, this is actually a complex challenge that requires a new software build and extensive testing to deliver the best possible customer experience.
We’re thrilled to announce today that software updates to support bootloader unlocking will begin rolling out in August for the global HTC Sensation, followed by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile USA and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. We’re in the testing phase for the unlocking capability now, and we expect it to be fully operational by early September for devices that have received the software updates. We’ll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.
HTC continues its commitment to unlocking bootloaders and supporting the developer community. Because of the importance of this community to us, please expect an update on this about every few weeks as we make progress toward launch. Thank you for your patience and continued support!

Hi everyone,
I am looking for some guidance on purchasing a used Sony phone. Specifically I am looking for a device that can be easily rooted as well as being as close as possible to the latest device(s) to do this.
I am kind of lost on my search, so I am putting it to the community to help me. I know I read somewhere that Sony did things differently after 2015 with their devices making it harder to root. So if thats the limit, I am willing to accept it.
I am particularly looking for devices that already have exploits and can be rooted regardless of if the bootloader is locked or not by the mobile networks. But also a phone with strong enough specs, maybe an old flagship device that has this availability now that it's old.
In the past I have had a Sony Xperia Z3 (D6603) and that was easy to root regardless of the bootloader being locked. So essentially I would like something newer than that with the same rooting capabilities. As buying used cant ever guarantee that it can be rooted due to possible mobile network restrictions.
Thank you for your time reading this, hopefully I have posted in the right section (Do tell me off if I haven't). Also thank you for the help to those willing to give it, I'd appreciate the support.

Thank you for your information, it has actually been really helpful. However, it should be noted that Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is a 2015 flagship, not a 2017. It's easier to root because it doesn't have dm_verity protecting the bootloader (I believe), which was introduced into phones after 2015.
Though do you know you can actually restore lost functionality of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, after the TA partition has been deleted as a result of root and you lose all the DRM keys. Here's the thread on here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672
