Hello, I have been around since day 1 and purchased a 3G Xoom from Best Buy on release day. Ofcourse it was odd from the start with no one in the store knowing what it was. I was showed the "Zune" lol..
Returned it @ day 14 and got a Gift card.
On release day I got the iPad 2 3G 32GB.
Yesterday, I traded my iPad2 for a New Xoom 3G + 200$.
Here is my review..
First off, a big thing in consideration to anyone is the weight.
I believe the Xoom weight's 1.6 and the iPad 2 1.3 but it is a noticeable difference.
If you are a weaker individual or feeble woman I wouldn't recommend the Xoom.
Weight: iPad 2
---
I believe both devices are very sturdy and beautiful pieces of technology. But hand's down the Xoom feel's more expensive. From it's sleek curve's to even it's sexy back exposing the L.E.D flash.
Build Quality: Xoom
---
Alot of people here say that because the Xoom has a higher res it's "better" but that's not true. I am guessing Motorola used Vizio type panel screen while Apple went with a higher quality. Nonetheless I still think if the iPad 2 screen is a 9/10 then the Xoom is 8.5/10.
Screen Quality: iPad 2
---
Multimedia experience and video capabilities are a big thing to not only the modding community but the common folk alike. For instance, if my mom got the Xoom who is not very tech savy put video on it; She honestly wouldn't be able to.
The only downfall of the Xoom IS VIDEO PLAYBACK. ONLY.
And, iTunes. But.... What can you do right?
Speakers on the Xoom are vibrant and I absolutely love having back the Stereo sound.
L.E.D Flash on the device I can literally record in pitch black conditions. I have been having an issue with a little stuttering while recording though even in good lit conditions.
Hands down both Front/Rear Camera's are superior to iPad's.
Because of the fact this is a "open" device people like myself believed I could drag and drop easily movie's/tv show's and such to the Xoom. I hate this problem but hope it will fix itself.
Multimedia Experience: iPad 2
---
The ability to access file system's easily and mod and one's will the Operating System to choose is obviously Android.
The beauty of every movement on Honeycomb is amazing. With the correct widgets and right wallpaper you can make your device a wonder to look at.
The iPad 2 is simply Box icons. I believe Apple will have to evolve this concept to keep up with Android Honeycomb. Remember, Android first started with a G1 with big iPhone.
All in all Operating System experience goes to the Xoom.
O.S Experience: Xoom
---
Last but not least is the Web Browsing.
I could finish this review in a sentence and say Xoom is better but.... FORECLOSURES!!! It happened to my first and this as-well it will randomly just exit itself. So i'm deep into 3-4 tabs and boom everything exit's I lose all progress.
Beside's these pesky mishaps the Stock Browser is magnificent ! Flash is available although I keep off.
Web Experience will have to go with iPad 2 mainly because it is more refined and you can download so many "Tablet" specific replacement's. Will Honeycomb mature? I think so. But can anything happen to Google or.... What they see the future? They are still thinking of Chrome tablet's.
Web Experience: iPad 2
---
Long and tedious review. It really depends on what you want from a device. Personally, I am happy I have the Xoom back... Android has a tremendous amount of potential I can feel it.

I'm guessing he means in terms of colour vibrancy and general brightness, but not in terms of resolution.
I think he means in terms of brightness, while the Xoom has a much better resolution Apple stuck really bright lights in theirs to make it look better, as a result it has much brighter prettier colors
or something along those lines but most likely in a less sarcastic way

Xoom screen is "washed out" compare to my iPad 1. Heck, my Gtablet looks better, more pop (looking at the correct angle of course) than the xoom. Which one thing that really bother me about the xoom, everything else is golden, and I love it.
I'm waiting for the Asus transformer IPS screen tablet. I'll check it out and see if I still want to keep the xoom. I'm a photographer, and having a great screen on my tablet is a must.

I think maybe if you'd make your mortgage payments this wouldn't be a problem for you. I don't think you should blame the Xoom for your financial mismanagement.

I have a SmartQ R10, which has the same IPS screen as the iPad1/2. With that in mind, I feel that the IPS screen is superior to what the Xoom has. Screen angles are fine, but there's a slight bluish tint that I just can't get past on the Xoom (I think it's TFT screens, in general). The colors on the IPS screen seem more natural to me.
I'm an avid comics reader, and I can actually see the yellowing of the pages on the IPS screen. Not so much on the Xoom screen. Just my two cents.

Brightness/Viewing Angles. Just go to a Best Buy. Turn Xoom brightness to Full then Turn iPad 2 brightness to full. Then also view a few similar websites and check viewing angles.

I didn't know there was such a thing as an "unbiased" review. Isn't all of this one's personal preference thus making it biased? I think an unbiased review would be if just specs were compared. Once preference or one's "experience" get involved it then turns to biased because everyones preference or experience could differ. Thanks for the good info though.

What's the point of awkwardly scaled up phone apps? I'll answer that, there is none. The only thing that matters is tablet apps.

Give it time, young Padawan. Even your mighty ipad had little that was tablet optimized for weeks/months after launch. (I know, I had a 64gig one from launch day). It lived on scaled phone apps as well, but in a MUCH uglier fashion.
I love my Xoom. But my wifes iPad 1 has a nicer looking screen with better viewing angle. I have a laptop witha similar screen to the Xoom, and I believe a lot has to do with which type of diffuser they use.

"So is it the right phone for the job? In a word, yes -- the Epic 4G is a great device. Killer, even. Nothing speaks to us more strongly during the course of a review than finishing it and saying, "alright, I'm ready to buy this thing," and the Epic is on the short list of phones that has managed to do it. More than its Galaxy S siblings, it feels like the Epic has overcome its shortcomings -- notably the forgettable UI skin -- to shine, and it's a phone we could easily imagine using day to day. Only thing is, the EVO is also on that short list for us -- and the better camera, bigger screen, and $50 savings versus the Epic still make it our winner in this 4G shootout, though only by the thinnest of margins. Needless to say, if you need a physical keyboard and you're looking for the one of the most musclebound Android phones money can buy, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it."
I've been thinking about switching over to the Epic but the GPS problems found on all the Galaxy S phones along with Samsung's bad reputation for slow if any updates make me really appreciate how awesome the Evo/HTC really is

But the Evo and iPhone 4 got the same score.
They really aren't as bad as some other news blogs out there (Gizmodo).
How many Epic threads do we need in an Evo forum? Are we going to have a separate thread for the Gizmodo review?
i played with a epic today, i wont be switching from my evo...
Engadget? -- Really? -- They're not even fully aware of GPS problems that are affecting the Galaxy S line of phones -- in short, completely disregard their reviews because -- Engadget isn't playing with a full deck -- don't let your love for HTC cloud your objectivity.
Hopefully I used -- enough.

The Gizmodo article needs its own thread actually...unlike this one..I mean in the Gizmodo article..now don't get a heart attack...only time it compared the Epic to the iphone 4 was to say that the Epic is better at it...when I saw that my jaw dropped....if anyone doesn't believe me read the article...
That said samsung said GPS will be fixed in September..so thats withing the 30 days of the Epic..so if necessary it ca be returned if GPS is a concern.
As for the Engadget review..only reason it got an 8/10 over a 9/10 was due to the 50$ extra..so its not that its a worse phone.it just costs 50$ more...

They amended the review at Engadget after talking to Samsung. The Epic ships with AGPS turned off. Once it was activated, they said things look fine.
Apparently google is requiring this to be off by default now. Must be a privacy thing, because I can't see a logical reason to reduce functionality otherwise.
Most buyers will never turn it on, and will assume their phone navigation sucks.
We see who is lurking in the background:

Considering the Epic *****ing when the evo was released about all the bone headed issues HTC still have not fixed I don't think anyone can point a finger at samsung. The Epic is slated for 2.2 in September and a GPS fix.
Without root and custom roms the EVO, for a power user, is a POS.
Talk about construction issues. Different parts of varying capability and quality. Different screens, different multitouch sensors etc its like they took all the extra parts they had lying around and stuffed them into the cases.
Light leakage, screens lifting etc... FPS fix? SD cards corrupted? Touch input lag? Grounding issues? Thank God for XDA and some updates.
The EVO shipped with far more wrong that the epic. This is coming from an EVO owner. If the worst thing wrong with the Samsung is a GPS issue that will get fixed and touch wiz lag (Which you can remove without a custom rom unlike HTC sense) then they are a few steps ahead of where we were at release.
Also it seems the 1gb of storage may entirely be NAND fixing the app lag from the vibrant and other Galaxy S devices. From Slash gear's review:
Happily, while use of the Galaxy S series was punctuated with freezes and pauses, anecdotally blamed upon the handsets’ use of an internal microSD card for their onboard storage, the Epic 4G seems generally free of such lag.

It's still "Internal SD" from what I can see, we (Captivate/Vibrant) don't have the newer firmware (yet) that eliminates lag when going back to the homescreen or when opening apps.
Got a chance to compare them side by side today and I have to say I highly prefer the EVO, the Samsung has a smaller screen yet the device is bigger and bulkier than the EVO. The UI looks like something designed by a 5 year old with a box of crayons. I guess if you really need a hard keyboard the Epic would be the only route you can take but the keyboard works great on the EVO so I actually prefer the slimmer device rather than a bulky 90's esque slide out keyboard phone. I honestly can't fathom why anyone would want an Epic over an EVO but I imagine some Epic owners feel the same way about the EVO. Regardless there is not a snowballs chance in hell I would ever own an Epic over an EVO The only other phone I might choos is iPhone 4 but with it's tiny screen and lack of widgets the whole thing just seems like outdated technology, I think Apple has alot of catching up to do to win me back from the EVO/Android.

agreed, i played with our demo epic all day today, and honestly, im not that impressed. It is a VERY nice screen, but as stated all over, colors look highly over saturated, and text is grainy because of it. I am envious of the 60fps when scrolling through menus, but thats ALL. Touchwiz is a JOKE. The capacitive android buttons work when they want to, cameras are much lower quality, and the screen is smaller. MY unbiased opinion? I think the epic is better for the GENERAL public out of the box vs the evo. That being said, For us XDA people, The evo is still the clear winner. Ill take my over clocked custom rom'd up ass evo ANYDAY over the epic. GO HTC!

"Oversaturated"? Riiight. I'm guessing those true black levels are highly exaggerated too.
I am within 30 days of return date for my evo and was considering making the switch but the reviews make it easier for me to stick to the evo
With fresh Rom and havs kernel my battery life is fine and I don't really think I would ever use the horizontal hardware keyboard
If it was a vertical keyboard maybe since id be able to use it one handed
The screen is nice but from looking at the vibrant it had a blueish hue I did not care for. Additionally the pentile matrix display made text a bit tough to read from anything but zoomed in levels
I had to return two Prime's. One had a busted vibrator and two stuck pixels that i couldn't fix after 36 hours of a pixel fixing program. The other had a screen defect similar to if you placed a white led Christmas light directly behind a sheet of white paper. They both ran like champs but to hell with the supposed super awesome better than ever super ips+ screens.
I have given up on the prime. I am going to sell the dock on ebay for a profit.
Could anyone who has used a Prime please tell me how well it runs and works vs your Original Transformer? I have read about the reasons why people may or may not want to upgrade to the Prime with the T700 coming soon or whatever but I really want to hear from people who have first hand experience on both. The lack of complaints here in general has me optimistic.
Am I going to miss the thinness and feel of the Prime? Does the OG feel as nice in the hand? Does the OG Transformer feel as smooth swiping screens and browsing the net? I don't game much...other than ROMS and Angry Birds so I don't care about that as much.
I have read about the dock drain issue and have to assume if I buy new, which I will, that this will not be an issue. Please let me know if I am wrong about that.
Also, have there been many issues with the screen? If I buy this and the screen is defective I am not sure it will make it back to the store. I will probably throw it at a wall and have a heart attack. I don't care about light bleed around the edges on a black screen. I have been used to light bleed on LCD screens since before I can remember....it simply doesn't bother me since I have never seen a display without at least a little other than a phone I have with a Super Amoled screen.
Is going from the Transformer to the Prime like the cell phone world as far as specs vs actually real world difference? (Meaning not much difference in performance but you get to say you have the latest) I have a single core 800mhz phone and it runs as good or better than any new phone on the market. The specs would disagree but my use of it proves to me that specs on paper mean nothing. In other words does Tegra 3 really translate into real world performance gains other than on benchmarks or graphically intensive games? The only experience I have on ICS or HC is with the Prime so I am not sure if Tegra 3 vs Tegra 2 will make a difference in this case.
Is there anything super good about the Prime that you just think would be a deal breaker giving up for the Transformer?
The Prime was my first tablet and I absolutely loved it. Almost kept the second one but my wife talked me out of it. This whole experience has left a very rotten taste in my mouth as far as Asus is concerned but I just absolutely love the combination of the tablet with the dock...it's just so elegant.
Thanks guys. I know you have probably seen posts like this a lot lately but I really am getting frustrated as I am throwing my wallet at ASUS and they seem to want me to keep my money.
If this post is tl;dr please just keep your comments to yourself.

There's been so much bickering going on around these parts that it's getting really difficult to find relevant information. Here are my thoughts, having owned both.
Asus has paid attention to many of the little details that needed improvement on the TF101. To name a few:
-Build quality: TF101 would creak (both the tablet and dock) if you torque it a bit.
-Camera: LED flash added. I don't really use it much, but it's nice to have.
-USB cable: old one received a lot of complaints for being too short; new one is 2 feet longer.
-Docking mechanism is much snappier, and now has two battery indicators.
-Battery life is vastly better when tablet is sitting at idle.
-Speakers sound much better on the TF201. TF101 lacks depth just like any other phone or tablet.
-Haptic feedback added: TF101 doesn't vibrate at all.
Increased processing power is easily apparent in graphics and video playback. I have video files that simply will not play on the TF101 but play just fine on the TF201. Also, apps start up and load faster so you'll see a difference there.
However, I have noticed that some TegraZone games actually play smoother on the TF101. The problem is, some developers have been way too ambitious with Tegra 3 and while the graphics look much nicer, they actually end up becoming more choppy. Zen Pinball THD is a good example of this.
The thinner profile definitely appeals to me more and is a bit lighter. One drawback I've noticed with the dock being so slim, though, is that the key stroke is shallower than before. I prefer the TF101 keyboard for typing, although it's not a huge deal.
I thought the TF101 was a great tablet until the day I got the TF201. Now, I only see it as a good tablet. It's unfortunate you've had some issues with QC, but as I recall the early TF101 units also had a fair share of people that were not satisfied. Anyway, having used both, there's really no way I can go back to the OG Transformer, and I don't see enough change in the upcoming T700 to warrant another upgrade (and another round of waiting only to be frustrated by Asus not being able to supply enough). I'd say stick with the TF201 and hope you get a good unit like mine.
Actually, I'm serious this time. Might I also recommend the galaxy tab 10.1. The point is there seems to be a lot of reports about problems with a lot of the prime devices. Asus just came out with the TF700T or something like that that seems to fix all the design flaws. To me, there's no better tell tale (or is it tale tell?) sign of them recognizing and quietly admitting there was a design flaw.
If the OP went through 2 prime devices and happened to have found 2 defective products, why should we encourage him to get a 3rd prime? This isn't an apple fanboy website where we ignore all the flaws of a device.
To the OP, the TF101 might not be the latest and greatest, but it certainly one of the best tablets out there. For everyday purposes, it does everything you need plus more. If you don't want to get an ipad, try the TF101 and see if you like it.

Do you have gps and wifi issue? From what I've read, half of the prime owners report gps and wifi issue while the other half report not having any problem at all with both these features. I'm having trouble telling just how many units out there have these problems because of the all metal back.

I'm about to leave the site completely for fear that there are others like you here. You are everything that is wrong with Android fanbois.
Heck, you even FOLLOWED me to a YOUTUBE video to post that crap! I hope google is paying your for ad-time, either that or your mother must have been murdered by an Ipad..or you are just a jerk who can't keep negative comments to themselves. Either way, I love my TF101, and wouldn't trade it for a prime (too many issues). So to the OP, take that how you want it

What youtube video?
Look, I admit that I'm a jerk. I just have a problem with whiners. I don't mind legit complaints about real honest to god issues. If you've been helping people with tech support for as long as I have, you'd get sick of whiners as well.
If you have the energy, complain about legit issues. I kid you not, I've seen someone complain that an all metal back tablet is too cold to the hands and so the end of the world is coming or some other nonsense. I simply don't find the same level of whining from the apple world. I don't own anything apple except the ipod I got as a gift. But apple users seem to be a happier bunch of people than everyone else. At least they don't constantly whine. Heck, apple put a phone OS on the ipad and apple users praised. But god forbids if an android tablet runs on a 2.2 or 2.3 version.
Dude, what is the damn difference between a faulty GPS and a faulty screen? And the video that I commented on a few days ago about the guy with ICS when I pointed out his light bleeds like my first TF, although not as severely.
A creak in your hands is a legit complaint, but a faulty screen isn't? Wow you have a way of picking and choosing what problems are legit and which are just 'whiner' problems..devoid of all logic. I'd say light bleed is a MUCH worse issue than creaking in your hands..it afterall affects the visability of the screen.
Apparently though you've made your mind up a long time ago to simply be disrespectful to anyone who complains about an issue that you are complacent about.

Hahaha, that was you? What a coincidence! I honestly did not follow you anywhere. I was just looking up ICS on youtube.
Look, it's great that you supposedly have a device with no light bleed at all. After dealing with at least a dozen ips devices first hand, I still haven't found one without light bleed yet. Did find some with small and some with large.
You really think light bleeds is that big of a problem? If everyone who has light bleeds decide to keep exchanging units for a new one in hopes of finding one without light bleeds, it would be a disaster.
I'm not saying you shouldn't exchange your unit if you don't like light bleeds. Just be aware that every or almost every ips devices out there have light bleeds.
I'm still snickering over the fact that we found each other on a youtube video and here.
light bleed is a bad problem. all of them are. I had to choose between stuck pixels, dust under the screen or slight light bleed. Or low OC. It is simply too much to hope for a perfect screen+no creak+good overclocking. It sounds reasonable and it should theoretically be expected that all the screens are perfect but they aren't.
I bought 6 transformers from CompUSA in April for this reason. I chose the one with least light bleed and a good vcore(i binned them). I could have had an even better overclocking one but that one had a stuck pixel. And I wasn't going to open both up and swap Tegra boards out lol.

Who can answer this? It's wholly subjective. It feels nice in my hand but how can I compare this to the prime? Are you asking about lightness? Are you asking if it brings on an orgasm? I have no idea. It feels balance, it feels slightly heavy but only because I have a silicone case on it. Without the case it feels MUCH lighter. You can pick up the floor model in person at Best Buy if you want to see for yourself.
Does the OG Transformer feel as smooth swiping screens and browsing the net?

Again I have no idea how smooth Prime is but my TF101 swipes across screen smoothy. No hiccups, I can swipe left right left right repeatedly on the home screen with no pauses or discernable chunkiness. If there's any added smoothness in Prime I don't think it's due to the hardware but rather the software (ICS), which would be a moot point since we're getting ICS anyway.

Apple are bieist SOBS, When I was watching the IPad 3 keynote I was literally grinding my teeth as they laughed at Android's small flaws (which wernt exactly flaws) and promoted the iPad flawless in comparison compared. This happens every year and this year is no different to apple's routine to demotivate other companies at every keynote!, plus the biggest WTF moment in the whole keynote was when they compared the tegra 3 to the apple A5 and A5X chips and told the tegra to be the lowest one in all of them!!! I mean come on ! A5 was a dual core and Tegra 3 is a quad core plus the 5th ninja core!! WTF APPLE! #$%& you!

Well you have your hardcore groups in either. I know people with an iPad 1 that didn't feel compelled to buy a 2... but the jump from 1 to 3 warrants a new purchase. I have a Transformer but didn't rush out for the Prime just because. Mine works great and nothing pushes it to a place where it under performs. Same with any make and model.
Its like console sales. Fanboys always say PS3 is selling more or 360 has the lead.... but eventually everyone who wants one will have one and numbers decline. Putting a bigger processor to run a larger screen resolution cancel out the speed benefits of said quad core. Plus native resolution will look good on any screen designed to run that specific resolution. My transformer has a beautiful screen with great clarity but I'm not running 1920x1200... how can that be!!!!
Super high resolutions are best left for the big dogs (ie PCs). 1280x1024 is plenty for a 10" screen. My 26" LCD PC monitor runs at 1920x1200... overkill for a 10" screen.
The downfall is now your forced to stream higher quality video because 480p will look like total crap when stretched to much. That or play them at their native size which will be super tiny = defeats purpose. Plus iOS is faced with ANOTHER resolution change, and we all know apps don't scale in Apple land... so prepare to purchase all your apps and games for their HD+ editions all over again.
Pass.

Um, no.
I went through quite a few tablets (including the ipad) before I settled down to the TF101. And when the prime came out, I didn't go and line up for hours/days to buy one on the first day. I still don't have a prime even though I've been thinking of upgrading. I just haven't found a good reason to upgrade yet.
i think apple needs to realize that a 4:3 resolution is NOT FOR MOVIES, NOT FOR WEBSITES
they should have gone with 2048x1280 for 16:10 res. 2048x1152 is just too thin(16:9, as in dell's SP2309W that is 2048x1152)
still though 1920x1200 is plenty for a 10 inch screen.

i bet they asked some old people if they could tell the difference between 250ppi and 132ppi
for the record TF101 is at 150ppi. i think 200 is the sweet spot

Um, yes. Maybe not you personally and i never say you. I'm just saying the majority of the consumers out there. you think the majority of Android users will even know what tegra2 is of you ask them. LOL
either ive converted a few people in our area or the Ipad3 just didnt do it for them.........
We took 4 paid pre orders on Thursday (yes only 4) - sold around the same amount again on the
launch day, and maybe a few more than that yesterday......so out of just over 40 we had around half still in stock left,
Think we sold more Ipad2 tbh. We had them side by side with the inpregnated Apple demo photos on the screen and although to some the difference was clear, others didnt see alot in it......infact the majority said "which ones the new one?".......and the ipad2 photos were taken in over cast conditions which showed the ipad3s sunny snaps up better (hmmm)
Ipad2 launch was carnage and was sold out in under half an hour - including main warehouse.
Personally the screen and camera to me are definately much improved.....didnt see much speed difference. Think id be disapointed going from a 2 to a 3 though.

The disingenuous part of the speech was where he explains why the iPad will never be beaten by Android tablets: He proceeds to show two apps, for each app he shows the the Android version which looks like a stretched/scaled phone app and then he shows the iOS version which look like HC/ICS tablet apps.
There's several problems with this:
A) If this is his justification for that statement, his justification is a joke.
B) His team handpicked the two worst apps to make his point. It's like claiming you're the strongest in the village and beating up a toddler to prove it. If he wanted to do a fair comparison he should have compared the iOS YouTube app to the Android HC/ICS YouTube app because the YouTube app (and other apps like the G-Mail app) on HC/ICS showcases the new ActionBar and Fragment classes Google introduced from HC onward.
He took the two worst apps that didn't utilize these classes and of course as a result they looked like **** compared to the iOS versions. His justification = a big LOL.
Here's a picture diagram of the YouTube app on both Android and iOS and you'll see they're very similar and if he had shown this it would have deflated his weak punchline. Each fragment (in red/blue) can hold what used to be separate activities so you can see multiple activities on the screen at once on the extra real estate of a tablet screen. The menu is no longer hidden by a hardware or software button. It's proudly displayed on the top as an Options Menu on the ActionBar for crucial options and the rest or what won't fit goes in the overflow menu (green).

I'm still puzzled by this random reboot thing that's supposedly plaguing the TF101's out there. None of the 15 TF's we have have random reboots. They all go into deep sleep just fine. I haven't charged my TF since Thursday. It goes into deep sleep almost immediately after the screen is turned off.

I got my new iPad last week and played with it a ton. I missed my apps for HBO go and brighthouse since i sold my old ipad 1 month ago. Since that time, i've upgraded my tf101 to kang ICS and had to rely on it for the entire month so i got to know it very well. Here are my 2 cents.
design
=====
winner : Transformer: Winner by decision. Compared to the original ipad, it would have lost because of the original one's similar edge feel but signficantly easier to hold form of the ipad 1. But this iPad one is more like a heavier version of the iPad 2. Awkward and gets warm too easy.
Performance
-=======-
winner : Draw. Both are lightning fast. The main reason i sold the ipad 1 was because it was crazy low after the 5.0 update. This is how it was meant to run.
Software O.S.
==========
winner : Transformer : winner by K.O in the 5th. This wasn't even close to me. I've grown to love the ICS so much more than the honeycomb it came with. For me to check email, browse with Dolphin, and print stuff, hands down ICS. Resizable widgets only adds to the K.O. I have my wife's email on a scrollable gmail on half the screen and my email on the other half. Below them are the icons for the various games we use, browser and other apps. Apple O.S. needs an update. It's pretty much had the same O.S. since it debut 6 years ago.
Apps
===
winner : ipad : K.O. in 10 seconds of the 1st round. Not even close really. Facebook works like it should for a tablet, words with friends works great, exclusive ipad apps like hbo go give you hbo access to all its lineup and brighthouse and espn both have amazing apps. Games are so much better too. Real racing 2 looks like Grand Turismo on my PS3.
intangibles
========
winner : Transformer : winner by decision. Could have been an easy win here for the Transformer. Between the keyboard and memory card alone it scores an easy victory. Add the ability to use Clockwork Mod and our great community, and boom goes the dynamite. But ipad 3 game back here with a much better camera from its predecessors, a speaker that packs such a punch, you swear the whole back must be a giant speaker, and the 5.1 update with features which lets you split the keyboard by just pulling them apart as needed. Very close, but transformer does take this, barely.
Screen
=====
winner : ipad : winner by annihilation. What can you say here. My Transformer took a beat-down here. It was the supreme chancellor before the iPad. I thought it looked better than the ipad, ipad 2 and any other comers. But this time around, it got smoked. what made this even more unreal was that the transformer has a 10.1 screen and by all reasonable accounts, looked fine. But after seeing this ipad on a 9 inch screen no less, I now see the future of screens. I never noticed that i did put a little effort into looking at my Transformer screen. But now, when i look at the ipad, it IS like looking at paper, hell maybe better than paper because the lighting is always perfect. You use no facial muscles at all to see this screen. Just amazing. See screen-shots below.
Overall
-------
Undecided. The screen and apps pushed the ipad far ahead but the transformer with its exclusive use of widgets, memory card and keyboard stormed back. As i wrote this, i noticed that espn.com was redesigned to take advantage of certain features of ipad 3. It almost looks like an app. with things like this, it's going to be tough for the Transformer.

New iPad screen does look pretty impressive.
Thanks for the comparisons. The screen difference is amazing. Do you think now you got the ipad the transformer will take a back seat? Browsing-wise (speed) is there a difference?? Thanks !
browsing wise it depends on the site. for most sites i'd say the TF101 is still faster, but for ipad optimized site (which there are alot) the ipad is faster.
I'm hoping the Transformer won't get left behind. I'm monitoring the usage. Right now, my 12 year old is hogging up the ipad for games so we are still mostly using the TF101. But my eyes prefer the Ipad.
I was the biggest android fan around forever. I've had android phones on all the carriers. Ever since the g1. I can honestly say with no bias, that android doesn't hold a token to the new ipad. Not even compared to the ipad 2.
I got so sick of the honeycomb/ics apps being stretched out phone apps. The lack of sheer apps ruins it too. Pixelated stretched out phone netflix. So frustrating. I've had almost every tablet on the market, every phone on the market.
Google has a long way to go (and I'm hoping they can do it with their acquisition of Motorola Mobility).
What it boils down to for me is: when I press a button, I want the damn thing to react. So many times I press home and my phone just sits there. Battery pull to follow. Open the camera app. Press shoot. People pose and hold it for a lifetime just to take a picture. EDIT - most frustrating things: Press shoot on the camera, hear the click, and after you lower the camera you get a picture of your feet. Or press click and the flash goes off and the camera gets delayed and you get a picture of a dark room.
When google can get the content down, and get it to work the first time every time, I'll go back to Android tablets. For now I'm Android phone, iOS for tablets.
The iPad3's screen should be compared to the Transformer Infinity's, IMO. The TF101's should only be compared up to iPad2's.
comparing technologies 14 months in distance is like comparing chariots with tanks.
high five
Confused?
OK im a bit confused here? So ur comparing a almost 2 year old original transformer to a brand new ipad? Yet other than screen and maybe websites, its holding its own very well. I say awesome for the transformer. Thats like comparing the ps2 to the ps3 screen 2 yrs later. DUHHH Id like to see the comparision when the new transformer 700 comes out later this year on screen. I love my transformer and even the prime didnt peak my interest enough to move up to it. So ur review even makes my decision to keep the original even better. Instead of like some fools who waste their money on the latest and not even have a clue as to why its better or if it even benefited them. Thx again for the review and heres to the duhhh factor.

where are you guys getting 2 years old? I bought the transformer just before christmas on Black Friday. It was release on April 1st 2011. It's not even a year old.
Please don't exaggerate to make a point, it defeats the whole purpose of a fair comparison.
Technology released within the same year deserves comparison. The ipad 2 can justly be compared as well since it was released before the transformer but within a year as well. The transformer prime can be compared as well.. All 4 models are available to purchase today at a best buy and are similarly priced within $100 of each other.
I would think nobody would replace their TF101 with the TF102 since it only upgrades the CPU/GPU. But I see people willing to upgrade the TF101 to the new ipad so i wanted to give my review of the devices since i happily own both. My review covers apps, O.S., screen, and intangibles as well which don't change between the tf101 and he tf201.
by the way, if you read what i said, this ipad replaced another ipad, not the tf101. we use both in the household as there are 4 of us. we like the ipad for its app exclusives and html5, this was just replacing the 2 year old ipad 1 which was lagging all the time with its limited RAM.
I don't dislike the TF101. I actually love the thing and have no plans to ditch it, just comparing the two.
Edit: Oops.. orateam beat me to the punch I'll just leave my reply here anyway since.. well, I can't be bothered to change it!

I'm confused as well.. The Transformer was released on March 30, 2011.. Making it ALMOST a year old... Where do you get two years from? Gotta love technology time compression.
Now perhaps Asus had the hardware in development for a year prior to the release... but one would have to make the same assumption about apple... So... yeah... let's not get carried away with how "old and busted" the TF101 is.

i just noticed it's out there in the app store, but not compatible with any of my devices. I have the TF101, the htc sensation (tmobile), the Droid RZR (verizon), the Galaxy nexus (verizon), and the nook color.
That's the old one.
I'm interested in the 700 too. Why waste extra CPU/CPU cycles just to run a high resolution on a mobile device because its useless? Unlike PCs the change in resolution is very minor with a tad crisper text. WhooHoo. You don't get more screen space or any real benefit. I'd rather put those powerhouses to work rather then making text a little extra pretty. And of you have to use a microscope to see a difference then its null anyway.
If they would have left out the stupid resolution, the thing would be the next evolution of the iDevice... instead it plays everything the same speed has last years but at a ridiculous resolution.

people will always see what they want to see.
The screen looks a TON better. This is not a small thing. Today's websites are designed around the resolution of 1024x768 running on at least 15" monitors. Our TF101 is a great screen with 10 inches at 1280x800. But the screen is just 10 inches which means you're looking at a screen some 72% smaller than the recommended scree size per resolution for reading text. Great for videos, games, etc, but compressed size for our text reading. What that means is that our resolution should have gone up by the same percentage (72%) to just be as comfortable as a standard 15" monitor.
that's a resolution of 1761x1320. The new TF prime will eclipse that, but the current crop doesn't handle that. the ipad has 2048-by-1536 which is so good , its crazy. Its better than the websites were sized for by a good margin. the text is so clear, that it makes me want to browse sites on the ipad rather than my 1920x1200 monitor at home. Truthfully, we've never seen anything with this resolution before. I find it easier on my eyes than reading the paper, magazines, or anything else. I'm not a big reader because of eye strain, but i think i found something that may allow me to read books for real. I never liked the e-ink or any other tablet for reading before.
look, i'm not looking to sell this device, Apple has enough money and i'm afraid of them taking over the world. I'm just giving my honest opinion and review.
Transformer Infinity. The Prime is 1280x800. The Infinity was announced end of February with a 1920x1200 resolution, but no one cared. Now suddenly 1280x800 is not good enough where some people used to say 1024x768 was good enough versus 1280x800.
Actually, it was around CES in January.

based on what i've seen with the ipad, i will probably upgrade the tf101 to the infinity as long as it's not too expensive. needs to be no more than $499, like the ipad 3. when it slated to come out?
Asus definitely did something right with the tf101, it even looks like the first nexus tablet will be a partnership between these guys and google. All this review does is solidify how good the tf101 really is, almost a year later and it can contend with the new ipad, sure Big Brother has more apps, but how many people stuck with myspace before they finally realized facebook was "the new thing"
Lets be real here the only reason to get an iPad is for the app store to get apps that aren't available for Android. No one is going to be taking pictures of anything with the tablet they're going to look like retards with that huge thing to their head. After a day you'll forget about the screen so do what anyone else with the right mind would do and just return it and buy a refurbished iPad 2 and save a hundred and fifty bucks. Look on the bright side with the iPad 2 you won't have to worry about it heating up so much like the tons of reports on Mac forums and you won't have to deal with the yellow effect that everyone is getting. Just get the iPad 2, it even weighs less and saves you some cash to put into the new Asus Infinity Tablet coming soon.
Oh yea Ross Perot 2012

Great review of both and like has been said a year on if the tf101 is competing and beating in some parts the new iPad then its still ok in my book,I think the 700 will be more of a match for the iPad3

No thanks. I put more value in the art than the tech. For me its 60/40.
I would pay the extra 100 anytime for this level of quality. Just as I will for the infinity.
While still waiting for my note to arrive i would love to hear from anyone who has recieved theres what they think so far and what featured aere the best if not all....i hate waiting but reading peoples veiws will do for now thx

Is there a piece of paper with official specifications? Can someone take a picture of it and post so we can finally see what cell bands it has?

Do you notice any black crush on dark scenes when you play videos on your note? how about screen tint on low and high brightness. does the note suffer from tint issues like the s3
Black clipping you mean?

Not sure what the difference is between black clipping and black crush, all i knw is that on my s3 when i view most videos with the exception of extremely high quality blu-ray rips, dark scenes appear to loose detail, as if the black become blocky almost like they are not rendering correctly. however bright scenes in daylight or well lit rooms tend to display fine. i was just wondering if the note 2 has solved these problems.
its a very common issues on super amoled hd
I couldn't find it on mine (GT-N7100, ordered from Expansys Austria, shipped from Marseille). I could'nt also find any hint in the englisch manual I downloaded from the Samsung Hongkong Site. I read in a short review that a long press on the back key should bring up the multiview side tab. It definitely doesn't on mine.
Beside the little less text on webpages (which doesn't disturb my surfing experience) I couldn't find a thing that is not better than on the N1.

The plus points for me:
- The screen - brighter, crisper, by far better test result with the black clipping image presented on XDA, good outside visibility. Better automatic brightness handling as far as I'm concerned.
- The pen - oval, so that you can't miss the button side, thicker, longer, riffled button, smooth on the screen
- The battery - I used mine a lot during the day (as it is when you test a new gadget ) and I'm on 28% battery. Very impressed.
- The notification led in different colors.
- The speaker (clearer, more bass)
- Air View works much better than on the promo videos. Practicable and fun.
- Camera with a faster shutter and a lot of bells and whistles.
- Speed of the device - it's just fun to use it.
- Slightly better positioning of volume keys and power key - didn't press the power key by accident so far.
- of course a lot of software improvements but that may come to the N1 too.
Hmm pity about the missing multi-window feature. It looks really cool in that Korean promo video. I would guess it will come in a future update though. There is no reason to make it a Korean exclusive.
Otherwise great to see that you are enjoying the phone. Personally I was impressed with it right from the start but I remember there was a feeling of disappointment among some posters at the announcement. I think a lot of it was because of the slightly lower resolution on the screen. Also it wasn't quite clear at the time that the Note 2 uses RGB instead of Pentile. Anyway clearly the Note 2's screen is great which, combined with all the other upgrades, makes it a worthy successor to a great phone.
Someone needs to get a dump of the korean ROM and make if flashable on the N7000 Note ASAP!!!!!
That is such a killer feature to not have!

Believe me, the Note 2 has so much AI built-in (smart stay, smart rotate, mouse hover, multi windows....i can go on all day) that it makes me realize the name "smartphone" is suddenly an apt one for the device. The quad core + 2GB RAM + full rgb amoled screen yield an experience much like using a laptop so please dont listen to the ones who do not have the device yet and start comparing it to iphone5 out of boredom...doing that is like comparing the note 2 to a 1985 Motorola first generation phone.
Also for the first time I have absolutely no desire to put any custom roms on the phone....the firmware on the note 2 as it is now is an absolute triumph....I cant imagine why anyone would load crap made from the bedroom of some hairless nerd when you have a platform produced by hundreds of professional engineers that went through proper QA

You may change your mind about that when you find out your current rom doesn't support multi-windows.

Because historically, that 'crap' has been better than what the engineers put out?
If custom roms weren't better, each in their own ways, then nobody would use them.

I find this multiview issue to be weird. Cuz on the Swedish Note 2 manual that is the same as any N7100 it clearly states that multiview is available and how to activate it.
I saw a Swedish video of it with 4G obviously N7105 and sue enough. Multiview was shown.

Yup. It clearly states that "this function might not be available for your region or depending on carrier brand"
