Well my streak died Wednesday night. It froze and upon rebooting, it went into a boot loop.
Tried reflashing a few roms (including originals) but was getting can't Mount SDCARD. I then went into engineering mode and found out that I had a dead internal SD-card.
Dell Mobility was closed for the night so I called them Thrusday AM and was told they would send me a replacement.
Received the replacement this morning and it is very poorly refurbished. The battery cover is pretty scratched and at the top (black bezel with the camera and speaker) you can see where the old bezel was ripped off... Looks like they used a screwdriver... very messy. There are also nicks in the back part of the body on both sides of the battery cover. Additionally, the camera bezel is not flush on the top left corner and appears to be coming up. It doesn't seem to be glued down correctly.
My dead streak is in better condition that this replacement. I could live with the two small nicks if they hadn't torn it up so much to get the front camera/speaker bezel and it was glued down properly. Well I would need a new battery cover too but I would have kept my old cover since it was fine.
I've emailed Dell with the issues but haven't heard anything back yet. Any one else get a piss-poor refurb?

Wow, I sure hope that was just an "April Fool's" posting. No way would i settle for a 'refurb' in that condition. I've had refurbs in the past for other phones Ive had replaced and they were as clean as new.
...you sure they didnt send the the dell streak from 'this' clip?....
look at post#1 in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996213
I wish it was an april fools joke.... yeah I'm sure it's not that streak .... The screen and front bezels were brand new and had plastic wrap on them.
I gave up on Dell calling me back so I called them and talked to the same tech that did my first replacement. I told him I was surprised how fast the replacement got here but Decision One, Dell's refurb company, did a horrible job on the refurb. He laughed and said they shipped it so fast they forgot to repair it. He spoke with his supervisor and set up a new replacement (for the replacement).
I'll post an update when it gets here.
Just got the order update... it looks like they are sending me a brand new one:

Now thats what you call service! Your persistence paid off and all worked out great! The tech was honest and saw your concern , took care of it and you are back in business!
Replacement Streak
Well I received the new replacement streak on Monday. It had two dead pixels but I decided I could live with it since it was actually working and had no damage... Now there is an entire line of dead pixels on the screen... Guess I'll be calling again in the morning.
Thats not good.
And replaced with another brand new one by Dell... Much quicker this time I might add. But I'm putting it up for sale in the xda marketplace.
I am glad you hada faster result. I am so infactuated with my Streak, I wish I could affortd to buy that new one from you, buddy. You are going to make somebody happy!
I loved my streak too but just had some back luck with the lasts ones. My main complaint is the black glossy bezels for the buttons and camera/speaker panel.
The screen is perfect for typing on. All my friends with Iphones loved the size and the screen too.
I like that big green grin you have in your sig. So, will you still have a streak after selling this new one?
You all are lucky... In my country Dell support is miserable and there is no such thing as replacement....

Yep. The second "L" dropped off mine about 2 weeks ago. I found it originally and put it back. A few days later, it was gone again...this time for good so I pulled off the "DEL" and the ring. Now my Streak has gone "commando"...kinda like the all black though...not really a "bling" person.

Hahah I'm sorry I couldnt help but laugh.
mine too,
mine reads ...Dvl missing last L and top 2 lines of E.
rubbish.
I actually took mine back to Optus and demanded a replacement - which they did Now I've got the Dell clear back cover on it, so I can't jag the logo on entry to my pocket which avoids it getting all sticky in there
clearly your dvl steak is a cheap knock-off
It happens, if you rub hard enough, even the ink would come off an iPhone's back (ones before i4 of course) Lettering on my old 3g is duller then when it was new, and I took really good care of it.
Personally i'd rather have a phone with an inset logo on metal than worry about another soft plastic phone. Perhaps you should think about intentionally peeling off the rest of the logo if it's already going. Might look good
Just took it all off now. Looks good just black embossed.
Stil dell need to make improvements for streak 2 but im def concidering buying again.

Mine came off as well. I cleaned the glue off with some windex and it looks better without the chrome!

I just last an L last week. Annoying.
My DELL Logo is gone too....doesnt look too bad but im going to visit a paintshop soon....any color/pattern/design suggestions? Will post pictures when done!
Keep having fun with the new "Deep Black" Streak
hah, I took this off the first week... I had done it on my xps years ago too.
looks better, not so flashy.
I did a little preemptive mod where I slapped a square of clear packing tape over the logo as soon as I noticed a loose 'L'
... this would look crappy but for the Otterbox case covering all of the ugly edges.
I was never a big fan of the chrome/shiny logo. I took it off my white streak at work with an exacto knife whilst reading this thread and then my black streak when I got home... Much better
Just removed mine on my red streak. I still have indents for the circle and the letters. Looks much better
Getting annoyed lately when people ask me what phone i have. I tell them it is one of 20 that can contact the president

Mine is a red Streak. The backplate is pretty loose and i was pretty drunk too. Pulled it out from my pocket, the backplate flew out. The 'D' got out. Pulled out the rest too. Its just plain red at the back now. Pretty hot.
Came off my black streak about a month ago, first the ring, then the letters, just cleaned off the glue and looks ok. Should have been printed on I guess, the backplate is pretty flexible so wasn't much chance of that logo staying put.
Has dell started servicing streaks yet? I wanted to replace the plastic housing cos its looking a bit worse for wear..

Yeah I know the feeling. My second L did also came off.
I used the plastic from a screenprotector to cover it and it did work. Now I have a full body screenprotector....so problem solved
I just got my DVP a few days ago...
Today I dropped it (the first time it dropped) and it shattered the glass...
everything works fine still...it is just so ugly I would like to get it fixed...
What can I do?
I cannot find any replacement parts, I cannot find any repair shops for this phone also... currently I am on hold trying to call dell (hopefully they give me good news?)....
I am lost and disappointed -I cant believe I cracked it esp. this soon!..
well I am asking for your advice / comments / help on this one, XDA ...

UPDATE: dell said it would be 249.99 to get a replacement phone...

Did you try checking with @dellcares on Twitter? Someone had a similar issue the other day and said @dellcares helped them. Not sure exactly what the outcome was, but worth a shot.

no, but dell charged me 249.99 to send me a replacement device...
they told me that a cracked screen is considered to be out of warranty (I think it also includes any physical damage as well...not sure about that part though)...

you're lucky then. They sent me a copy of the posting on their community forums telling me its absolutely not covered. I could replace my 16g device...for $499.00. But they would throw in free over night shipping.
While it sucks, I think it's hard to argue with this stance unless people start to report widespread screen cracks. I've dropped mine a couple of times and no problems (~knock on wood~) and I have not read about a rampant issue with screen fragility, so at the moment it sounds like you were just damned unlucky.
My phone just fell at the train station and the freaking screen cracked. Damn. I called T-Mobile . .The rep at first didn't even know what it was and asked if it was a tablet. Put me on hold for over 10 mins then asked me to call Asurion and see what they said.
Asurion rep put me on hold for about 5 mins and then said it wasn't a supported phone.
I then called Dell Mobility. Lady told me $249 for a replacement. wow! I told her I'd think about it. Though it's half the cost I could get an HD7 straight from T-Mobile for less than $100 with contract renewal

Hi, so i had a similar situation this past week and I wanted to find out if you were able to purchase and replace the screen? Got the same $249.99 replacement quote from dell (even though you can purchase a new one for $300 from dell).
Please help!

Guys, shed some light, as I anticipate gorilla glass to be shatter proof to most extent! I am amazed seeing this thread!

Scratch Resistant NOT shatter proof. Accept this now before something happens and you wind up butthurt.
you guys should get a warranty from squaretrade. they cover shattered screens and liquid immersion and are pretty cheap compared to an extended warranty from dell.

I had a similar situation - wife dropped and our small son stepped on her Venue Pro, cracking the upper right corner of the gorilla glass. The phone still worked fine, even in the impacted area -- it just looked ugly and glass continue to chip off. Dell offered to replace it for $250.
I found the replacement glass from the below site, ordered it and it took about 2 months to arrive (they were out of stock initially).
mobilephonecrazy.com/modeldetail/Venue-Pro,LCD_Glass_Lens_Screen_.htm
I successfully swapped out the glass today and it was tedious being careful not to break anything and lose parts, but not too bad if you're patient - it took me about an hour. Remove the backing and battery and there are 6 black screws to remove (one was covered by a white sticker for me). I just used my finger nail to go around the edge of the lower housing (not LCD) until I was able to wiggle and eventually pop it free (be gentle, don't force it). Then extend the slider so the keyboard is exposed. Rotate 90 degrees from the lower housing you separated from, being careful not to damage the cables that attach the LCD to the lower housing. There are then 4 screws that secure the digitizer / glass to the LCD and slider housing. Two you can see internally once you rotate 90 degrees as above. The other two are always visible with the slider extended (keyboard visible) but they're under 2 black stickers at the top of the screen on the back. I just used a push pin under the edges to pop off the stickers. After removing these 4 screws, again I used my finger nail working my way around to pop off and remove the digitizer / glass from the LCD and slider housing. Once free, there is a single cable connection to remove the digitizer / glass from the LCD. Check the replacement glass as a guide for where these last 4 screws are and where the cable connects (top of the screen near the speaker). The cable just pops on / off.
Ensure you clean the underside of your new screen and the LCD is free of dust / debris / fingerprints before reassembling! Snap on the glass to the LCD / slider housing and install those 4 screws first, then rotate back 90 degrees to pop on the lower housing and then finally re-install those 6 screws. Mine fired right back up and works fine...I was a little nervous with potential damage to the exposed cables and separating the housings, but it turned out fine.

I just replaced mine last night. A bit heart stopping at times as there are a lot of fragile cables and little thingst that can fall out but if you have a good light, a small star-shaped screwdriver, and patience, you can do it. I bought the glass from an EBAY seller in china. Took less than 14 days to arrive and the cost was a lot cheaper than the UK seller you see in the posting (I paid like $74, with shipping). My DVP looks new now. I tooks some pictures as I was taking the thing appart and will try and post later.
I was able to create a very raw an amateourish video for youtube. Hopefully you can use this link to get to it //youtu.be/pnOnYZDZfrw I hope this helps somebody out there that needs to replace the glass on their DVP!

Thanks for the advice, I'll check it out.
I've managed to get some serious scratches on my Gorilla Glass and I've no idea how I've done it as I am always incredibly careful with my phone.
How do you know it pops out easily? Did you see it somewhere? I'd like to see how easy it is to remove and replace before attempting it myself.

now what....
I shattered the front glass on my DVP and bought a replacement on Ebay from a seller in Hong Kong. I watched a youtube video and managed to take the phone apart and replace the screen successfully. If you do this, be warned that there a few pieces that are not attached to the motherboard that will just fall out. Be sure to notice where they came from. For me, a little board running the on/off button and the camera lens fell out. It was easy to put them back in their place. HOWEVER........
Everything works now except I see the letters "ENU" up near the clock, and the virtual keyboard will not appear. Do you think this means the phone thinks the keyboard slider is out because of something I screwed with while the phone was apart?
I just installed the Mango 8107.79 update, and the keyboard still will not appear. So I know its not a bug. The EM app (you get after pressing qwertyuiop and doing the "man machine interface test") is telling me the slider is open when its not.
What does ENU mean? Just be careful if you replace your own screen!!

ENU means that the next letter you type is going to be upper case.

Yes, I think you are probably correct.
Mine says 'ENG', so I would guess it represents the language. 'ENU' is probably English - United States. The code seems to appear when the physical keyboard is pulled out. (It doesn't seem to be visible when using just the on-screen keyboard).
thanks....
Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I guess I'll take it apart again and see if I can figure out why the keyboard is stuck in pulled-out-mode. I feel guilty now, because I just bought a Lumia 710 to replace my DVP, but the display is nowhere as beautiful. The Dell really is a great product....
Dell had the Streak 5 on sale about a month ago. A lot of people bought them. The problem is that most of us got Streaks that were double sealed. The original seal was cut and another seal was placed over it. Dell's cover story is that they were opened up to install 2.2. That story doesn't hold up. The Streaks are "dirty", literally. My first one had fingerprints all around the battery compartment and "grease" blobs on the back. I called up Dell about the double seal and they appologized and promised to send me a new "single sealed" one, guaranteed. What showed up was another double seal. This one looks even worse. There were clearly fingerprints and dust under the protective film. Once I peeled off the film, the screen was covered in fingerprints and the crevices had dust in them. If they only opened them up to do upgrades, why would they have had to remove the protective film? Regardless of the cause, they didn't put any effort into wiping them down before sending them back out. Shoddy. So I've decided to keep the replacement because it boots faster than the first one even though it's older. I'm wondering about the battery though. Is there a way to check the number of cycles that have been put on a Dell Streak battery? I'd like to check both and then keep the fresher battery.
I guess checking battery health would be easier than find out it's number of cycle.

I bought a streak from dell start of the year, and mine was totally brand new. Not a mark on it, but then again it still doesn't have a mark on it now and I've had it 5 months. But to be fair, I bet all companies harvest theparts of returned goods, lets face it the plastic casing around the phone must cost nothing to replace. So I bet a lot of "new" phones are just old ones with a new surround so it looks new. I wouldn't worry to much might have just collected a little dust when the software was updated you don't really know.
I don't think that accounts for it. It's the fingerprints under the protective film that is more concerning. That should not be happening. The line workers wear gloves to prevent that. Even if Dell did have the techs open them up to install upgrades, there should have been no reason for them to have removed the film to do that.
Demo Units
I'll bet they are upgrading and repackaging demo/ display units that they had in Malls or Best Buy. Really those may be better than a Brand New unit because they have been thoroughly tested, now yes they really aren't new and you have a valid complaint but if it works properly and doesn't have any physical defects(scratches, nicks, etc) then I wouldn't worry to much about it. From my experience(I'm on my 3rd Streak) if something goes wrong with your Streak that isn't your fault Dell will happily replace it(if you bought it from them directly) no problem.
Hi,
I recently bought a Streak as my first android phone. I got it at a very reasonable price (~ 100€ below the current amazon price). So if I would sell it used now I wouldn't loose any money...
So far I really like the streak however I have to carry it around in my jeans pocket.
The numorous reports of broken LCDs and Dells terrible support however made me thinking if I should sell it now and get a more robust cheaper smartphone.
So is the broken screen thing really an issue ?
As one who has killed two Streak screens, I would say "No". I doubt that any other phone would have survived either of those incidents either. The first time, my streak got between me and the handle of a pallet jack that I was trying to push up a ramp. The second time, I was simply clumsy. I was going to slip the Streak into my shirt pocket while standing and missed. As a result, it suffered a 4' drop to a ceramic tile floor.
-Uwe-
Someone from Dell officially advised to not use the Streak in your pocket ( http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/mobile-devices/f/3824/t/19353929.aspx ) also several people stated that their Streak broke even they didn't drop or bump it.

I say if your a careful person who cares for your gadgets then keep the Streak.
Otherwise if your likely to bash it around or drop it then get something less delicate.
I don't know how people break this phone. I find some of the stories of 1 and 2 foot drops to be obviously over exaggerated. I have literally put this device through hell. I have a seven year old daughter and ceramic tile. I work on concrete. I always have it in my pocket, and to put that into perspective I am 5'7" and weigh 126 lbs so they are some pretty small pockets. I've even left it outside on the patio on rainy nights on more than one occasion. I can't say enough how pleased I am with the build quality of this phone. If it wasn't for terrible support from dell with upgrades and such, I would guarantee sticking with dell products in the future.

I'm the same build as you and have had the streak since US launch.
The first one I had lasted about a month, dropped it a few times and nothing but a few scratches on the edges (had a full body invisible shield). Then one night I was crossing the street and a car came flying around the corner so I had to run and jump out the way, streak slipped out of my hand, slammed the road and slid almost a full lane across the street. Picked it up and only a few scratches but it wouldn't boot. After further testing I came to the conclusion that internal microsd had dislodged. Called dell up and they swapped it out for me (ofcourse I didn't tell them the whole story )
Now my second streak I've had it for a while. I go out and party quite a bit so its had its fair share of tipsy/drunken slips out of my hand. Again its held strong and only resulted in scratches on the edges. But the other week I took a picture, pressed the home button, power, then put it in my pocket. 2 min later pulled it out of my pocket and LCD under gorilla glass was cracked, with the crack spreading like a pigeon foot from the home button. I went through hell to get it replaced. The dell reps were horrible. Had a supervisor call me a liar, one agent claimed the LCD is "software" and not covered by the hardware warranty, and another claimed my warranty is void because I had it in my pocket (agent didn't have anything to say when I asked him why on the TV ads they claim it to be the "world's first pocket tablet")!
Well after calling multiple times a day for 4 days in a row, I kept requesting my issue be escalated and many reps denied, I finally talked to someone higher then the call center supervisor and was told because of my circumstances and horrible experience he'll be able to issue me another unit and I would be getting follow up calls and emails regarding rude and misinformed reps (had a couple hang up on me when I read them part of the warranty and one even yell at me).
Well replacement came, was a refurb, and not only was the notch that sticks out of the battery cover broken off (didnt care much, could use my old cover) but the left side of the top plastic piece was sticking way out and there was a really deep scratch in the gorilla glass from the charge port to the power button.
Called dell and nice lady was helpful and said she has no option but to send me another refurbished but the next day a brand new one was at my door :-D
After this entire fiasco I'm staying away from dell for a REALLY long time but I will keep this streak and most likely make a permanent mount for it to replace my trucks stock stereo/navigation unit when I get my next device (if it lasts till that happens).

I'm also satisfy with the D.Streak's build quality. Every device will mostly break (the LCD, internal circuits....) if you let it fall on the ground and there's no exception to that.
A good advice for any new D.Streak New owner would be buy an Otterbox Commuter/Defender case to protect your device.

I saw the pic you sent Steve on twitter of the cracked LCD (I follow him). Lol @ the "pocket tablet" comment to the dell Rep. I also have decided not to stick with dell solely on the bases of software support. DJ_Steve has been a godsend, but that said I will have to conform and get a more popular android with more devs. Half the fun of android, for me atleast, is flashing new roms and trying new things. I own the ds5 and 7 and both are extremely boring, but sadly, very capable devices. Nice try dell. Or lack there of.

I always keep mine in a pocket, even sit on it from time to time, and I've had no problems with the screen. I do have it in an OtterBox Commuter case and also have a non-glare screen protector on it.
I am very happy with my streak's screen so far,it has a excellent touch, much better than milestone or other lg/samsung I have tried. And the screen is also pretty tough,I never applied any screen protector, yet not a single scar on it while the upper part and lower part are both screwed!
I do have a defender thought,I cut away the lower side of the defender,so that I can just flip over the device, and use the defender to keep my screen from sweater or unexpected damage.

Well Guys the day has come where I have cracked my first phone. I was working and it fell a good 4ft onto a concrete floor face first. I have dropped my phone plenty of times but I guess this one finally did it. Thankfully it's not that bad as I just have a technicolor rainbow on the top of my screen. I can deal with it until I get a new screen. But just wanted to rant!
Damnnnnnnnnnn, sorrry to hear that bro!! Have you already ordered a new screen?
A couple of weeks ago I wanted to sell my Streak and took the pics, created the add( I know.. bad decision) but then it made a sudden unpredicted drop from around 50 cm (1.5 ft?) out of my pocket onto the tiles at home.
Nothing seemed to be wrong with it but after two hours or so the camera connection broke apparently as it wouldn't connect with the camera. Whenever I activated the camera app, the device would get very hot at the front and back cam region, the battery suddenly freaked out. If I made a phone call it would drop from 100 to 1% in less than a minute but if it was used as a mp3 player I could listen for at least a couple of hours. Charging went extremely fast, but discharging as well.
After a couple of days I sent it back to store as a RMA and just received the conformation today that it will be delivered tomorrow!
Anyways, my parents and friends laughed at me and said the Streak committed suiside ......The lesson I learned in my case: 1. Don't ever sell the Streak, 2. Don't drop it and you will be a happy man for a looooooong time.
That sucks man. I've been lucky enough to not have dropped mine yet.
However, I've received a line of faulty ones. Dell is shipping out my 5th replacement device!
I've given up on screen protectors. I keep having to ship them back to Dell. F it. I'll trust Gorilla Glass to be tough enough.

just use those from Xtreme guards, they really great and you can reapply them! There are also a couple of alternatives, they use the same material but I find Xtreme guards to be the cheapest with great quality.
I've never used Guards on any of my phones. I will not ever unless I like the way it looks. Anyway. I am going to go ahead and order a new LCD and possibly try repairing it myself but I am very iffy about that.
been there. Actually got Dell to replace my Streak when it happened, but it took over a month! But I've been careful since.
I broke my Phone on the front about a month ago ... it was in my Jeans back pocket and I bent to pick up my kid from floor and went on to squat posture ... and heard a feeble cracking sound! I knew instantly, it happened. When removed, to my bad, it was found the same. Ran to the Dell Service next day morning (I am in Hyderabad, India now) and bought my Dell Streak when I was in US. I had to pay around 250$ (including $60 US to India warranty transfer) and they instantly replaced the device (except my old battery).
