I know the Xoom can't make/receive phone calls but it DOES register when you call the number. There is a missed call log and it will appear in there when you call the Xoom. I also noticed my notification light sometimes flashes while I am calling the Xoom. I was wondering if this could be used for anything like maybe texting? I have Google Voice app set up on my Xoom linked to my reguilar cell number. Has anyone gotten Google Voice to work with their Xoom number? I tried it but it says 'number could not be verified.' Also...logging on to My Verizon, I can switch the info screen to my Xoom number to see my data usage. I also see under the text message usage menu that I received one text message. Somehow the Xoom can can receive messages, at least, from it's assigned number. Just don't know how to display them.
Mike
If your notification light is actually blinking when you call the Xoom number then the possibility is there to use the device as a phone. The light blinking could be coincidence though right? Have you been able to reproduce this without failure?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
I have noticed that when i am trying to call my xoom that the 3g turns off, as soon as i stop calling it the 3g comes back on. Reproducible indefinitely.
It's coincidence. Tried multiple times with mine, and there's no light, no missed call. Though it does definitely have a phone number. Tried to sign up for My Verizon, no dice. They send you a confirmation code via txt...which we can't get.
In the eRoes system (authorized retailers' system) it auto-adds a block text feature when you activate the Xoom...hopefully this will change in the future.
BTW, once you sign up for a my verizon account, and the system detects the text can't be sent, they will snail mail you a password. Its a very stupid system.
What does this have to do with Developing?
i think the original question was asking if someone had been able to make this work with google voice. implying that there may be a way to make it work with software. I.E. development.
Moved. Please post in the correct section. Thank you.

Hello, new poster, long time reader. I have searched and haven't found anything exactly pertaining to me...so here it goes...
First observation; When using the instant messengers, windows live, aim and yahoo all sign out randomly. Gtalk stays connected. I've read a post somewhere describing that when you leave a tower and connect to a new tower, disconnects can happen because of how it is setup, including the use of wi-fi and disconnecting from that can cause it to d/c when you switch back to 3g/edge. Well, through my own observation, this is not the case. I have stayed in one spot for most of the day before (my couch) and have had the services disconnect, only using edge. However, Gtalk remains active at all times, even when driving through town. Would anyone be able to explain this to me or help with a solution?
Second observation; A new application came out, Callblocker. This appearantly uses the phones feature to send calls directly to voicemail. I have tried using this feature before on my phone and by sending directly to voicemail, it then procedes to not give any sound. I have read that this is a known issue, however there are people that have used this feature and not had this issue. Is there a fix I don't know of? I currently have a recorded ringtone of silence for these numbers I don't want to take, but that doesn't stop the vibration, nor the inability to use the phone for the duration of the ringing. Help?
Third observation; I have recently been having phone spasms, where certain numbers that have a set ringtone will randomly choose a different ringtone for a different person, (i.e. My wife will get the standard ringtone, my ignores will get my wifes, and a standard will get my ignores...) I found this to be random and non reproduceable. Has anyone heard of this? And if so, is there a fix?
Otherwise this is the best phone I have had and will most likely remain as such! Thank you!
#1 and #2 I'm not familiar with but #3 I'm getting the same behavior. It's annoying.
get hello Im if you need aim. the random disconnects are when you go from 3g to egde and back. the stock Im app sucks balls
the g1 has a built in call blocker. never used it, so i wouldn't be able to comment on if it works or not
I have a few custom tones for certain people and i think they reverted back to my default tone once or twice. never knew why. i just gave up on individual tones.
The thing is, I live in Tucson, there is no 3g, only edge, so I don't see how that could happen. Also, why doesn't the Gtalk disconnect as well? only the other three?
otherwise, thanks for the reply....any other takers?
If you are using the stock/default apps that came with the phone, the Gtalk one is the only one that uses data to send the msgs. The others all use sms's. Id suggest using one of the third party apps for im's.
That may be so, but why would a brief data disconnect cause any of the services to disconnect, and not the one that uses data? As many have said in regards to why they stop.
Also, a third party app may be an alternative, but it doesn't answer the why...
Also, does anyone know about the second two observations?
First off, Google programmed Gtalk, they programmed Android, they programmed the stock IM app. Thus they know how to write the app so that it works properly. They have nothing to do with AIM, Yahoo, MSN, etc. They wrote an app that works to an extent. Since those other IM apps are "competing" with them they have no incentive to "fix" them.
If you want an app that works with AIM or MSN etc then 3rd party is how you will have to go.
I'm sorry, did I offend you in some regard? Google has the source codes for all three of the other instant messenger apps in order to program them for android. So again, your answer doesn't answer the why...
is there a specific instance that they disconnect? Is it really hiccups in the network? if it is hiccups, why do programs that use sms to transmit data intermittently, disconnect when the constant data stream is no longer there.
Now I have tried meebo, it's useless in my opinion, every ten minutes you have to resign in on however many accounts you're using and it may remember your password and user id, but it doesn't care which service you are trying to log into...so it will keep your id and pw in the entry boxes the same, even though you switched from aim to msn.
I have dl'd Hi Msn as well. So far it is the best for msn...pretty interface too.
Now, away from the messengers because there doesn't seem to be a concrete answer besides, "google doesn't care...",;
Does anyone know about the silencing of phone sounds when you press the red phone symbol to cancel an incoming call or when forwarding directly to voicemail? There are programs now that take advantage of these features and people that like them. Am i missing something? How does a program use the forward to voicemail feature, without silencing all sounds? The only "fix" I have found for this is to make a call out, normally voicemail.
Also, so far there are two people who have experienced the random ringtone for assigned ringtone contacts. Any answers? or just a bug? Because this is rather recent.
Is there some way to add in a fixes while using the AT&T Atrix on Rogers for new voice mail icon always on, sms having the wrong time and pay phone displayed for some incoming calls? I had none of these issues on my nexus, both cm and stock. Thanks.
*UPDATE*
After trying my sim in several different phones and not being able to recreate the constant new voicemail displayed I tried swapping out my sim for a newer one and the icon seems to be gone for now. I also asked the rogers rep to exclude "name display" for the third time and I hope it finally works.
The voicemail icon is not a problem for me. SMS Time Fix fixes the time stamp issue and calling rogers and getting them to exclude the "name display" option on your call display fixes the payphone problem.

I can't seem to get rid of the new voice mail, I put my wifes sim in(rogers) reflashed ect... always comes back soon as I put my sim in.
I had the vm issue on my galaxy vibrant before. Just call your no, leave a vm message. Then check your vm and listen to it and erase it. That fixed it for me

Yeah I've tried that... I even tried that putting my sim into my nexus(the nexus didn't show an icon but I did it anyways).
The VM issue is a Rogers problem, one that I had on my old G1 too. You have to call them and go through all their useless troubleshooting. None of it works of course, so in the end I had to have my VM account removed and re set up and that fixed it.

yeah just seems weird, my nexus doesn't do any of these weird bugs. I really hope one of the scripters can fix these issues. I'm using gingerblur now, I wonder if some settings and stuff can be imported from CM or similar.
Hey guys, there is a known issue. Call in and ask that the CSRs please "exclude name display" from your account. This will resolve the incoming caller ID issue. A reboot shouldn't be required but wouldn't hurt.
For voicemail, please leave a voicemail and then check it. Either delete or save the message by hitting 7 or 9, and then hit # after to back out of the menus before ending the call. Too soon and the voicemail waiting indicator would stay. It irritates the heck out of me but you don't have to put up with it. It will go away if you do this.
Sometimes you may need to add/remove voicemail from your account. A CSR will do this and TSRs may be empowered to make this account change as long as it pertains to troubleshooting.. not too sure.
Any data issues too, get the TSR dept to reset the network connection from their end. They'll have you power cycle and it will fix data issues. My bud had a problem but I patched it up for him via Chat Support.
I'm on Rogers too and my Atrix is working flawlessly

I wouldn't call it flawless, but yeah once you have the proper apn's it works fine call wise and data wise. It's just some little things that need to be ironed out. Hopefully once the Atrix goes global we'll see that disapear.

Name display and if you use network time(or use sms time fix) your sms is way out. The network time is really useful for me as I travel a lot. The name display is also useful for knowing who someone is while I'm not at home so I don't pay long distance. The new voicemail thing is annoying and seems weird that it doesn't do it on my nexus, tilt or e71.

We have 8 lines on our business account from Sprint. Here is what is happening:
When Line 1 calls Line 2, the call goes through, the phone rings, and everything works like normal. When we switch it around and Line 2 calls Line 1, the phone on Line 1 never rings. Line 2 gets Line 1's voicemail. This has been going on since March. It never changes. Line 1 will never ring when Line 2 is calling it. All other phones can call Line 1 and it rings perfectly and acts like normal.
Line 1 and Line 2 are both HTC EVO's with Cyanogenmod 7 on them. They were working perfectly for two months, and then it changed. When the problem first started happening, sometimes instead of getting voicemail when calling Line 1, I would sometimes get a message that said: "This is channel 47 4".
Around the same time when this started happening, it also started with another phone on our plan. Line 3 on our plan cannot receive phone calls from one certain Verizon cell phone number. The Verizon phone is a Samsung Fascinate that is rooted. Line 3 on our plan is a Sprint HTC Hero running Cyanogenmod 7. The same thing happened here. At first the Verizon Phone calling in would here a message that said "This is channel 47 4", but now all they get is voicemail immediately.
All of the phones use Google Voice voicemail, but I tried disabling it and then they just got the Sprint voicemail immediately.
I called sprint about it but they said they need to troubleshoot it in a repair store. We do not have corporate stores in our area, and I don't trust the repair stores that are here. Last time my old Touch Pro was in to them, it came back severely damaged. Also, I don't want to risk losing the root on my phones and having them upgraded to Gingerbread which hasn't been rooted yet.
Has anyone ever heard of an issue like this, or does anyone have any idea what I should do?
Thank YOU!
I did check and make sure that in the contacts the phone was not set to forward the call to voicemail immediately.
I am on AT&T with an HTC Tilt/Kaiser and have the same issue with my step-father who has an EVO. And yet my Mother, who is on the second line on that account with another EVO, can receive them from me. Not just you. Except none of the phones have mods and we don't get the "47 4" thing.
If anyone ever has this problem, the solution for me was to completely wipe the phone, install a cm7 again, and NOT restore any backed up applications.

UPDATED INFORMATION:
I misposted. My problem has not been fixed. All that was solved was that I can now log into my ATT voicemail myself from my own phone - prior to that, by pressing "1" to access my voicemail, I got the message: "This is channel 47-4"
Now though my voicemail seems OK on my end, people calling in still receive the message "This is channel 47-4"
I am in Los Angeles but I have found a newspaper article about a whole community in Norfolk, VA whose phones are supplied by a Time Warner subcontractor, Intrado Communications in Longmont, Colo and the panic it has caused that they were unable to reach Emergency Services on their phones.
(I have not posted enough to post a link. I cannot seem to post even the unlinked URL but here is the article title and newspaper - it was printed in several local newspapers, it's easy to find.)
Phone Service Trouble Remains
Watertown Daily Times
A quote from the article:
"Most of the time, the phone rings busy," Mrs. Michaud said. "Sometimes, it says this is channel 47-4."
Still nowhere can I find anyone who knows what is going on. And back in January, apparently even Time Warner had no idea, they fixed the cable but not the phones.
A NEW TEST: I have just deactivated Google Voice again and tested - my ATT voicemail IS reachable. My problem is gone. Unless I want to forward to Google Voice. I have searched Google and Google Voice Help up and down and have not found a reference to "channel 47-4"
But at this point - in my situation anyway - Google Voice is the culprit. Or possibly the target.
ORIGINAL POST:
I just finished spending 2 hours with ATT in 2 different tech support attempts for this same 47-4 message problem - only mine was slightly different. I fixed the problem but I can't let it go. I am curious how the same recording could be reached across different carriers, ATT and Sprint.
Blow by Blow to maybe help someone figure it out:
I have an unmodded Galaxy S2 SGH-i777
I have been using Google Voice for this and my previous 2 phones all with the same ATT Wireless account.
Today, when people called my number they got the same weird message as everyone - weird for the message and loud background noise.
"This is channel 47-4"
I called my phone from a landline and got the message.
Clicking the hook switch makes the message repeat without hanging up.
(I tried it 4 times)
Google Voice should have intercepted an unanswered call, right?
The first tech support advice:
Reboot the phone, they would send a voicemail reset signal and then I should reset my password.
(I took it upon myself to deactivate the Google Voice account first.)
When I pressed the "1" key to access ATT Voicemail and set the password, I got "Unable to perform this action contact customer service."
I then tried to access my voicemail account online and got ERROR E1018
I called tech support again and they weren't interested in the error code.
They called me back on my landline and asked me to reset my password using "1"
I held the phone up for her to hear. This time when I pressed "1" I immediately got the recording "THIS IS CHANNEL 47-4"
What I found fun is that the message freaked out the tech support. She had never heard anything like it, she said.
Here is the new oddity:
When she came back on the line she was more freaked out! There was no record of any voicemail on my line. Voicemail isn't an "option," she said, it comes with every account. She knew of no type of account without voicemail. Having no voicemail account on my number was impossible, she said.
Regardless, I popped out the battery and restarted while she sent a "reset" signal and everything is now back to normal. I enabled Google Voice and all is as it was before today.
I've searched online and there is a lot of recent 47-4 issues and a lot of good solutions only no one seems to know what the message is or how it got there. I have the added piece of information that somehow my ATT record of any voicemail account was wiped out in the system.
The same message across carriers means what? That it's in the shared data lines? Shared towers?
If someone knows what this message is and who it originates from, I'd like to know. If I find out, I'll come back here and leave an update.
I have a NS4G, and I seem to be missing a lot of incoming calls. The phone doesn't ring/vibrate at all, and shows no indication of a call or a missed call. The only way I know somebody tried to call is I end up with voicemails, or people tell me that they tried calling and didn't get through.
This seems to happen even when I have a decent signal and when I can make outgoing calls just fine and even send/receive text messages. I don't think it's simply a coverage issue, because the phone is never really searching for a signal.
This has happened for certain on CM7 and Deck. I'm not sure about the stock ROM. In fact, I'm thinking of reverting back to stock just to test. If it does happen on stock, then I'm wondering if it's just something physically bad with the phone.
I have also updated my profile and PRL.
Has anybody else experienced anything similar? I don't seem to drop calls or have sporadic signal strength or anything like that.
Yes, i've noticed the same thing. Do you have a google voice integrated account? I'm wondering if that might be the common factor.
I've had to go and make sure that the GV app logs missed calls in case this happens.

Good point, I haven't noticed this since I updated the radio and to 2.3.5 stock, so it might have been fixed. I'll keep an eye out if it continues.
I am on the new radio. In fact, I seem to have the problem on both radios.
I am on Google Voice, by the way, and I have my cell number forward to my GV number for missed calls.
The odd thing is I don't seem to always get a missed-call notification; only one for voicemail. Then, in logging on to my GV account in the browser, it doesn't show a missed call. However, when it is working properly, and I dial my cell from a different phone, if I ignore it then I DO get a missed-call notification.
One other possible factor is I'm using an Airave at home, which is where I've noticed the problem most of the time. I'm not positive if I have experienced it outside of the home. I'll have to pay better attention.

I'm thinking it probably is GV too, but I wouldn't want to give up my SMS'ing from chrome extension.
You can turn it off so it doesn't take over SMS if you want and just lets you use the stock app all the time.
I don't have GV using SMS right now. Perhaps I'll disable the forwarding temporarily to see if that solves it.

If your on the new radio and using an airave you may miss calls if not connected to wifi. Im having that problem on the new radio. Ill have full bars but if i call my phone it goes straight to voicemail with no notification at all.

Unfortunately, I'm missing some calls using that setup. :-(
tmobile nexus s with gv deactivated
I have a T-Mobile nexus s on 2.3.4 stock, I'm missing a lot of calls and so is my wife, I've deactivated TV but it didn't change anything
Wondering if anybody else out there is encountering this! Trying to figure out whether or not it's a hardware issue.
I have ns4g and a use GV and when somebody calls my number, GV rings my nexus and my other phone with verizon, so I can say that the problem is not GV, most of the times only rings my other phone and the nexus nothing, the problem is the phone with a very weak radios, wifi/3g, and the poor service of sprint and is getting worst and worst.
Im having same problem on T-Mobile Nexus S but only when I'm on 3G .

I've had this happen to me on the Stock rom, and Deck, and I don't use GV at all for anything. Happens when the phone is sleeping usually, if it's lit up, the call won't get missed. I've really not spent the time to research it as I don't use the phone much anyway.
I also noticed problems with incoming and outgoing texts being either delayed or not sent at all. I rigged up a little test.
I scheduled a text message to be sent to my phone every minute with the current time in the message. Then I would just keep an eye/ear out on my phone while it sat on my desk. For the majority of the time, I would get the alert every minute, but sometimes there would be nothing for five or more minutes. After this outage, it seemed like all of the incoming messages would be delivered at once.
During that outage, though, it seemed like that was when the phone calls had trouble getting through. I guess it makes sense that there would be a connection between the two.
I had the same problem. I even had people tell me that they got a recording saying the call couldn't be completed. I was even testing the other day and no calls I made to the phone were connection, going straight to voice mail.
I decided to disable google voice and my issues went away, as well as all the delayed SMS and failed sending SMS problems I was having.
Hello,
does anyone know if there is a rom that supports Outgoing call waiting notification? By this I mean if you call someone who is already on the phone, it tells you that your call is waiting? My S2 had this feature but the Nexus 4 does not. I have tried the latest CM rom but it does not support it. I have attached a picture as an example.
Thanks
Try going into the phone settings and check event notifications. It shows stuff like forwarded calls when someone calls you and other details. Dunno about that but that was a privacy nightmare for Verizon so they shut it off as well (I think).
I remember people were upset that others could know they were on the phone instead of just "unavailable" because they didn't answer the phone. People were complaining that when parents or girlfriends or whatever called they'd keep calling because they know they are on the phone and not in the shower or sleeping or whatever.
If anyone is interested, The latest PAC rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2146879) has this feature! In call settings, enable Event Notification and it works
