Things I've noticed.... - G1 General

Hello, new poster, long time reader. I have searched and haven't found anything exactly pertaining to me...so here it goes...
First observation; When using the instant messengers, windows live, aim and yahoo all sign out randomly. Gtalk stays connected. I've read a post somewhere describing that when you leave a tower and connect to a new tower, disconnects can happen because of how it is setup, including the use of wi-fi and disconnecting from that can cause it to d/c when you switch back to 3g/edge. Well, through my own observation, this is not the case. I have stayed in one spot for most of the day before (my couch) and have had the services disconnect, only using edge. However, Gtalk remains active at all times, even when driving through town. Would anyone be able to explain this to me or help with a solution?
Second observation; A new application came out, Callblocker. This appearantly uses the phones feature to send calls directly to voicemail. I have tried using this feature before on my phone and by sending directly to voicemail, it then procedes to not give any sound. I have read that this is a known issue, however there are people that have used this feature and not had this issue. Is there a fix I don't know of? I currently have a recorded ringtone of silence for these numbers I don't want to take, but that doesn't stop the vibration, nor the inability to use the phone for the duration of the ringing. Help?
Third observation; I have recently been having phone spasms, where certain numbers that have a set ringtone will randomly choose a different ringtone for a different person, (i.e. My wife will get the standard ringtone, my ignores will get my wifes, and a standard will get my ignores...) I found this to be random and non reproduceable. Has anyone heard of this? And if so, is there a fix?
Otherwise this is the best phone I have had and will most likely remain as such! Thank you!

#1 and #2 I'm not familiar with but #3 I'm getting the same behavior. It's annoying.

get hello Im if you need aim. the random disconnects are when you go from 3g to egde and back. the stock Im app sucks balls
the g1 has a built in call blocker. never used it, so i wouldn't be able to comment on if it works or not
I have a few custom tones for certain people and i think they reverted back to my default tone once or twice. never knew why. i just gave up on individual tones.

The thing is, I live in Tucson, there is no 3g, only edge, so I don't see how that could happen. Also, why doesn't the Gtalk disconnect as well? only the other three?
otherwise, thanks for the reply....any other takers?

If you are using the stock/default apps that came with the phone, the Gtalk one is the only one that uses data to send the msgs. The others all use sms's. Id suggest using one of the third party apps for im's.

That may be so, but why would a brief data disconnect cause any of the services to disconnect, and not the one that uses data? As many have said in regards to why they stop.
Also, a third party app may be an alternative, but it doesn't answer the why...
Also, does anyone know about the second two observations?

First off, Google programmed Gtalk, they programmed Android, they programmed the stock IM app. Thus they know how to write the app so that it works properly. They have nothing to do with AIM, Yahoo, MSN, etc. They wrote an app that works to an extent. Since those other IM apps are "competing" with them they have no incentive to "fix" them.
If you want an app that works with AIM or MSN etc then 3rd party is how you will have to go.

I'm sorry, did I offend you in some regard? Google has the source codes for all three of the other instant messenger apps in order to program them for android. So again, your answer doesn't answer the why...
is there a specific instance that they disconnect? Is it really hiccups in the network? if it is hiccups, why do programs that use sms to transmit data intermittently, disconnect when the constant data stream is no longer there.
Now I have tried meebo, it's useless in my opinion, every ten minutes you have to resign in on however many accounts you're using and it may remember your password and user id, but it doesn't care which service you are trying to log into...so it will keep your id and pw in the entry boxes the same, even though you switched from aim to msn.
I have dl'd Hi Msn as well. So far it is the best for msn...pretty interface too.
Now, away from the messengers because there doesn't seem to be a concrete answer besides, "google doesn't care...",;
Does anyone know about the silencing of phone sounds when you press the red phone symbol to cancel an incoming call or when forwarding directly to voicemail? There are programs now that take advantage of these features and people that like them. Am i missing something? How does a program use the forward to voicemail feature, without silencing all sounds? The only "fix" I have found for this is to make a call out, normally voicemail.
Also, so far there are two people who have experienced the random ringtone for assigned ringtone contacts. Any answers? or just a bug? Because this is rather recent.

Phone Just loses all signal GPRS/Phone after talking several minutes. Any ideas?

Well, Ill be talking, and about 4+ minutes in, the GPRS and Phone antenna signals go completel dead. Like they reset and turn off, then on again. I can make another call about 30 seconds later, but sooo annoying! I completely reformated, reinstalled everything I use, and a few days later its happening again. Any ideas what could be causing this or how to fix it???
This happens to me too. No idea how to fix it though
Hmmm, what do you have installed?? It has never happened to me so I can only guess it has to be something you are running.
Im running several apps...Multi IE, Omap Overclocker, Registry Wizard, Pocket Weather, Agile Messenger, and I think thats it. shh5455 what are you running? Maybe we can find some common denominators and figureout whats causing this prob. Any input any of you may have would be great. Thanks!
common denominator
i'm running agile messenger and I've had the same.problem also. not using any of the other apps though. hope that helps.
This is related to programs trying to use GPRS while making voice calls. Agile Messenger is one of the programs causing problems. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=268499 (AKU2.3: GSM connection dropped while making voice calls) for more information. This thread also contains a registry change that may help.
Registry Fix
Do you have push mail setup? There is a known bug that will disconnect your phone call after about 4 mins. There is a registry edit that will fix this. Search google. I cant seem to locate it right now. Sorry
I had the exact same problem. It is a bug were an app that needs data will will request a data connection and the voice call gets dropped. In my case it was Weather Panel that was requesting data. Everytime that happen my call dropped. This reg hack fixed it.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL]
"GPRSStallWorkaround"=dword:0
SeanH
same problem, an interim fix
I've had this problem too. Everytime I hard reset or change ROMs it goes away, only to come back after I install all my usual apps. As far as I can tell it is Agile Messenger that is doing it to me, but I can't be positive. I just tried that reg fix and I'll let you know if it works out.
In the interim, I have found that while I am on a call, if I delete all the Notifications that are added (with MemMaid), including repplog, HttpDog, and Agile Messenger, then the call can continue without being dropped. I haven't bothered to try narrowing it down between the three since I just want my call not to drop, but it works. It is terribly annoying tho to say, "hold on a sec" every few minutes and delete the new notifications that are added.
If this registry change doesn't fix the problem, than I will create a small app to run while a call is in progress and delete these notifications for the duration of the call. It's hack-ish, but it should work.
fluxist
The registry fix will solve this problem. Just be advised that after a hard reset you will need to apply that resgistry fix again.
The problem occurss when you are running any data applications. Microsoft now (as of AKU2) requires applications that use data to suspend data when a voice call is in progress. Since most apps are not doing, this the device sees a call for data and eventually decides to reset the phone to "fix" the problem. This always occurs after four minutes and is repeatable.

Phone Calls

Is it my phone or what
when i get a call I feel the vibration and hear the ring tone about 4 to 5 seconds before the screen turns on so I could answer
Do they plan on doing anything about this?
You guys dont happen to have SMS popup installed??
I am having the same issue but don't have SMS popup. I do however have dxTop, Missed Call, a rooted phone, and my apps on my SD card. I noticed it some time after I got the last Missed Call update (when they changed the logo) and added dxTop. Do any of you have a similar setup? Maybe we can figure this thing out.
I don't have any of those apps installed and am experiencing the same problem.
I do have K9 and I get a wait/force close periodically.
I do have caller lookup installed though (because it's apparently very important that I don't let my factory warranty on my truck expire).
I'm using JFRC33 1.42 but I can't say that it didn't happen with previous firmwares, it just seems to be happening more often now. It hasn't happened in a few days though.
It really does seem like there's a combination of factors that cause the problem, I just haven't been able to notice the pattern yet.
I have not done a wipe either.

Hmmm... I have JFRC33 1.42 as well with the updated radio (1.22.14.11) and K-9 Mail which I too am having numerous force close issues. Maybe K9 is the culprit? Anyone else have K-9 as well?
I have the same issue and just got to the point where I had to remove my 8GB sd with apps to ext2, wipe and now I only have pretty much the stock apps, stock messaging, no sms pop up, 1GB sd with jfv1.42_RC33_MOD
just did it last night to see if it works fine now.
I'll post it as soon as I found out whether it works or not
so far the problem is GONE! the phone ring right away, shows the caller info as should be yeeeh!! am testing right now installing custom ringtones and missed call app, running missed call app is causing the phone to ring only twice and goes to VM right away, rebooted and everything is normal but no doubt that missed call is causing some unwanted actions in the phone,

how many apps you have? are you rooted? apps in the sd? lets find out how far can we go to resolve this.. I think is related to the amount of apps and the notification apps running, I don't have K9 tho..

Change to froyo

Forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong place but this is all very new to me. I recently flashed my phone to 2.2 and some strange things have been happening. I have two examples I would like to share which both have the same outcome. Trying to import a book into aldiko from the sd card ends in the program being force closed. The phone vibrates once, pauses a few seconds, vibrates three times and then the error message comes up. The second example is pretty much the exact same except it happens when trying to launch a game with psx4droid. One vibration, pause, three vibrations, program closes. Both of these programs worked without issue prior to the change in OS. Could anyone suggest any reasons and solutions to the situation? I was on the last chapter of an amazing book. Thanks in advance,
Gino.

yep doing it to me too, not very often, it was happening a lot at first, but i did a factory reset and it cleared up a lot of them.
I dis one factory reset with no result.should I just keep trying til it goes away?

This has been happening to myself and my partner's Samsung Galaxy S since we upgraded to the official UK Froyo update. Just about any app can crash with the vibrate, pause, 3 vibrates. While mine is rooted with z4root and I have a ton of stuff on it, my partner's is not rooted and only runs some very basic apps.
Did you update through Kies? What version of FroYo are you on?
Try to uninstall the apps, download them and reinstall. Also, using the Kies Registry Patcher, see if Kies will flash the stock 2.2 ROM. All stock ROMs can be found here.
Follow these steps

Updated with Kies to Froyo (JPO) a month or two ago. I notice JPY is now available through Kies so currently trying that.
I had tried installing/uninstalling apps previously, but according to logcat just about any process can crash with this vibrate pulse, pause, three pulses issue. I've had System, acore, TWL, Market, Gmail, the browser (stock and Dolphin HD), etc. These aren't the normal force closes either. The logs show them as SIGBUS or SIGILL (no K, not SIGKILL) errors, which normally mean a hardware fault, but, given so many people are having the problem after updating to FroYo, and given it's happening on two phones I'm in possession of personally, I'm sure it's related to the FroYo update.
Well, since updating to JPY 6 hours ago I've had zero crashes and the phone seems far more responsive and faster. My quadrant score has increased by around 20%.
There were a number of things that would nearly always crash the phone in the way I described previously - such as updating more than 2 or 3 apps at the same time, rapidly scrolling around certain websites, etc. I updated 10 apps simultaneously, I've gone to all of the websites that would crash the browser, and tried a whole load of other things that were "high risk" on JPO. Zero crashes.
If the phone does crash in the next week or two I will come back and mention it here. But so far, it looks great.
We took a Froyo update and the phone is now no longer able to accept incoming calls or texts when ANY other web-using application is running, e.g. you open the Facebook app and leave it running in the background so you can get notifications from FB and you can't receive any calls or texts until you have shut down FB. You open a browser, you can't receive any calls or texts until you shut down the browser!
Not even sure how to report this as a problem because all the websites we are directed to seem to be FAQs for people who have never seen a phone before. Any recommendations so we can return to the use of phone calls? For the next week or so we have only pay as you surf mobile broadband and no Kies, which resticts things somewhat, but is there anything we can do right away? What about when we get back to a full net connection and Kies? Where do we even report this error, as everyone seems to be having a different type of error with this update, and we'd like to make sure they know about this one, a smartphone that doesn't receive phone calls unless you turn everything else off is a little pointless!
Incidentally, site designers, any chance you could put some text descriptions for your button images? I loaded this site with no pictures and it doesn't come up saying where the reply buttons and such are located like it does when you have alternative text. If people use screenreaders (e.g. blind people like many of my friends) they cannot navigate this site without these. Cheers!
I've tested this and it works fine for me.
Are you sure this isn't just the limitation that's present on ALL GSM networks whereby if you're on 2G (i.e. not WiFi or 3G) then you can only have either a data connection OR a voice call? 2G only supports one type of connection at a time. If you're using data and want to make/receive calls you must use either 3G or WiFi.
The phone is definitely showing 3G as the connection type, and we have two phones on the same network in the same room and only the Froyo one has this problem, which it has never had before. Even in areas where the connection type is showing as HSDPA (never get those letters in the correct order!) it is impossible to get any kind of incoming call when a web application is open. It also applies to applications which are open but not currently using data. Not sure if they use data in a background kind of a way, but if you open a browser and load e.g. Google and after it is fully loaded attempt to call that phone you still get the answerphone. You can only get a phone call if all apps which might potentially use a web connection are shut down. Renders every aspect of the phone useless because you have to shut off Facebook, all browsers, email, weather updates, news feeds... basically everything, just in case you might potentially receive a telephone call.
We had 2 T-mobile phones on Windows Mobile in this same room and neither of those has this problem either. The phones are 2x HTC TYTNII (Tmobile MDA Vario 3) and 1x HTC Wildfire with Android 2.1 which all work and one Samsung Galaxy S on Android 2.2 which worked (in terms of being able to get calls with web apps loaded) up until 2.2 was loaded.
Well, that's very strange. All I can say is that my SGS and my partner's SGS, both were running 2.2 for a couple of months, and now both running 2.2.1 have been fine. I tested both again just now and I can make/receive calls fine on both even while actively using the browser.

[Q] Atrix problem: inputed text disappearing, refusing to call out etc

I looked everywhere for this problem didn't find a topic so here it goes.
I LOVE this phone however I'm having a problem; text input disappearing or not showing up at all when trying to enter information. When this happens calls don't go out and I can't do anything network related. I've tried to type things into to other places as well to no avail. The only hope is resetting it everytime, and it can remain working correctly for 5 min or 5 hours, until it freezes again. I'm stock with the latest update, also running widgetlocker and launcher pro with various other minor apps. Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix? thanks
Still happening, I guess no one else has this issue?
I second you. I have the problem as well when text disappears suddenly as im inputting, and I can't see what I type, until I click send. This happens especially while I am on the Skype app. The only way to get it to work is to leave the conversation and step back into it.
Are you having the issue all over or certain programs?
All over. Can't send a text or call out. Other programs work just fine, but anything that needs inputted text doesn't work

[Q] Problem with the Note's Email application?

Hi guys, I have setup my corporate Exchange mailbox using the built in application.
However, it works VERY poorly (settings set to Push) - sometimes the widget (or alerts for that matter) wont display new mail for HOURS! Until I manually go into the Mail application, and a minute later suddenly I get all the emails, and 4 emails I've been trying to 'share' (Notes) have been all sent at once.
Any idea how to fix this? or what to use instead?
On my old Dell Streak, using the default program, I had instant alerts on emails! sometimes even before Outlook had a popup!
this is annoying to no end..
I'm not sure if you're organization sets device security, but mine required a passcode to be set on my device if I used my Exchange account. For whatever reason I was still able to use the pattern lock but I noticed the same delays that you did. On a whim I set it to a numeric lock and all of a sudden my mail decided to push properly.

ok well, I tried this - 10 mins ago someone sent email (I see it on outlook already) - yet nothing on the Note (I switched to numeric lock hours ago), so must be something else... any ideas?
wifi is connected, and gmail is getting updates without issues.
I have this problem, too, and I've seen several others post about it as well. It's quite frustrating. Sometimes it works instantly and sometimes it'll go a couple hours without sending/receiving. Some people think it's a push bug and say changing to polling fixes it, but it didn't for me. I set it to 15 minutes and I still get the same problem with delays. It's really frustrating. I'm going to see if it's an app issue by installing another email client such as K9 or Touchdown.
Also, I wonder if it's a connectivity problem; I've been having weird issues; I work from home a lot so I'm here a lot in my wifi, and it seems sometimes my phone won't use the cellular network. I turn my phone off, it goes into deep sleep and turns wifi off, then I won't get any emails until something else wakes my phone, turning wifi back on. Like the email client can't or won't wake the phone when needed. I'm going to start a post about this tomorrow.

My wifi also disconnects sometimes if the phone is idle I don't know why.
That happens at home, it does not switch to 3G as I don't have any 3G plan atm at all (and its disabled in settings anyway).
However the mail push issue is prevalent even when I use the phone and its active - mails still don't arrive! even if I click refresh on the widget itself, no new mails until I launch the Mail application!
Ok well, this has gotten worse.
My limit is when I show up for a meeting only to find out 15 mins ago a postpone email was sent.
I've mailed Samsung support, hopefully will get an answer to resolve the issue - will update when I hear something back.
Anyone else experiences the same problem? please post here...
Also anyone who solved it
I had the same issue as well,So i deleted my Exchange account started all over again from scratch,on the set up i chose all the options I needed, now it works as it should,so what I have noticed:
1-After the setup is complete,if you go to the Account Settings and start to fiddle with the settings that seems to upset the push funtion ,except changing the notification sound didnt do any harm.
2-When I assign my custom Notification tone it also seems to upset the Push funtionality(but I am not 100% sure of this one yet.)
