Call and find out?

Man that sucks, well the good news is you bought one of the easiest devices to take apart, if you don't have a Verizon contract I would look to you homeowners insurance to see if they would cover replacement, if renting possibly rental insurance, otherwise I would check with the manufacturer, in this case Motorola or Gorilla Glass about either fixing it or a replacement part, again since you have the advantage of a unit that is fairly simple to break down you should be able to do it yourself; there are already several parts breakdowns on the web. Good luck.
I should note it would also depend on whether you just broke the outside glass or the LCD display itself, if only the glass, probably easy, if the LCD display, well that might involve some soldering, hopefully a connector.

@OP
I'd also try 3rd-party iPad repair services and see if any can service you, or give you pointers as to where to go. There are already millions of iPads out in the field, and cracked glass damage is probably the most common.
You can start here, http://google.com/search?q=ipad+glass+repair
Alternatively, a more direct route, http://google.com/search?q=xoom+glass+repair

$299 ouch.

Yeah point taken. Still dang freak accident.

Oh Damn, beauty got scratches. ;(. Try calling motorola to see what they can do about it. That is why a case is so important.

ouch, damn...Maybe I will buy a case on Sunday...

gorilla glass is basically high tension glass which resists scratches. but because of internal high tension it cracks easier than regular glass. see iphone4 back glass breakages. while it resists scratches, if scratched it shatters/cracks easily.
Corning dips each sheet into a molten salt bath where a chemical exchange occurs. Potassium ions are infused into the glass. At the same time, sodium ions exit the glass. The potassium ions are larger than the sodium ions. This pressure creates what's called "compressive stress". That stress is actually a good thing and stops the glass from breaking on flaws.

I would call Moto and tell them you were the very first adopter and accidentally cracked it. Maybe they will give you a free glass replacement. You never know.

What About Bullet proof Glass. Then again I Guess it would Depend on how big the Drop is

@TeeQ
Man, that really sucks! I would be pissed off. But there may be some hope? The warranty states that any accident, abuse, etc.. is not covered. Now, since this is a very new device, Motorola may sympathize the situation. Just give them a call, and explain what happened. It can't hurt. And if you're respectful they may find a way around the "fine print". If they don't honor the warranty, then I guess the best option would be to use some insurance policy you may have, as a previous user had suggested. So, before you get ripped from some 'service repair shop', call Motorola. And don't lie. Just be honest and kind.
Good luck!

Bullet proof glass isn't exactly glass though. It's layers of glass and composites that are sandwiched together. If you did drop a piece on it's corner it would probably shatter the glass portion, but wouldn't break. Glass would just be spider webbed.

Did you buy it on a credit card? Some have protection plans, like Amex does 90 days accidental damage protection and theft protection. Might be worth looking into. I use it for all my big electronic purchases.

Gorilla glass my ass!!

Dude I want to kill myself right now. Got two 1cm scratches on the middle bottom of my xoom. Not noticeable when the screen is on but jesus christ. It was with a ****en water bottle no metal.

Hey that rhymes
Small particles which are harder than gorilla glass can stick to either the glass surface or the plastic surface of your water bottle. Accidentally rub them into the glass with the water bottle and you can definitely scratch the glass.
Gorilla glass absolutely requires a screen protector.
As for the return, most places just make sure the serial number matches and the parts are in the box (cables, charger, etc). Never had anyone look closely at the display. Though if they saw it, I'm sure they would reject the return.
any suggestions? ive thought about saying there is a defect in the software/hardware...to do an exchange..or purchasing one off contacting and switching?!
help me people..HELP MEE
If it's not noticeable when you're using it I'm sure you'll forget about it. No need to lie.
Calm down and take a few days to think about if you really care that much.

And there are other people who have scratched such screens. It can happen. So why bother risking it when a screen protector can be had for under $10? Well maybe under $20 for a tablet.
i agree with the others: don't take it back to the store just because of 2 tiny scratches. With time, you will forget it. If it's not really visible when using, why stress? It's hard for you to go to sleep knowing that your xoom is not being used with a scratch on it?
I remember when I scratched the hell out of my 42-inch plasma tv when I was moving a few years ago. I was so upset, especially at the guy who let the door close on the screen. Once the tv was turned on, couldn't see the scratch, so I stopped worrying and my stress levels went down dramatically

Whatever you try be careful as you may cause more damage. Personally, I would try a small amount of toothpaste on a microfiber cloth. This method completely removed a scratch on my Epic 4G (Gorilla glass).
I'm actually pretty surprised by this.
My Samsung Vibrant has gorilla glass and has taken a serious pounding from not even caring about the keys in my pocket to actually falling face down on the sidewalk.
This is why I got insurance on my Xoom from BB.
it was a PLASTIC poland spring bottle.
im so sick to my stomach over the purchase amount and how fast it scratched. its disheartning...i mean, i have a nexus S now too (dropped 524 for it) and it doesnt have anything...
granted..i left the bottle in my duffle bag with my xoom, but seriously...nothing else in there..i guess i am freaking out but i dont get it.
i know its a low life move but im within my 14days return policy and maybe i can get away with making up false claims of software issues without the technician being too penetrating in operating it...and if so..ill walk away, head in lap, and accept the scratches.
ill post the damn pictures of it right now

Good luck man, I'd be rright there with you if that happened to me. It is your own idiocracy for not having a screen protector on I left the plastin on that said where the volume and whatnot on my xoom for two days till I got a screen protector.
But either way I'm rooting for you, let me know how things turn out.
And for the haters I know its his fault and it really don't effect anything significant, but can you honestly say you wouldn't try the same thing? I mean its not like he had it in a bag with a handful of coins, it was a water bottle, imagine that being you. Trying to be all healthy by drinking water only for it to turn on you and chomp up your new multi hundred dollar device's screen.
Now the real story, you left it in a duffel bag unprotected? I did that once with my kindle and the screen cracked. What do you expect will happen?

Tablet fragility

Just be careful when you're carrying the tab ..
Mine slipped out of the neoprene case I had in and hit the floor on 1 corner ..
The screen cracked all the way through and it is now unresponsive to any touch inputs .. but everything else still works ..
I had a thick screen protector on, so it probably would have shattered if I didn't have that ..
a HARD CASE is a must !!!
now I must go to samsung and see if they can replace the glass
Gorilla glas is a must. But hey, dropping the tablet is a no cash back situation, so Samsung won't use more expensive stuff when they can sell cheap stuff for full prize.
Gorilla glass wont' help much

Tell that to the iPhone owners whose screen and back just crack by themselves.
Bigger screen will be more fragile compare to its smaller counter part. Look at the youtube video and see the damaged done on gtab7. No matter whether its gorilla glass or not. The impact may be different, but still its a glass.
Real life example, when a baby falls on the hard floor, most of the time the injury will be minor. Now you fall the same way, and you know whats on that x-ray.;-)

I had the same thing happen to an HTC HD2 (also no Gorilla Glass). I think the corner impacts are the worst.
Sorry mate!
Yikes! I will invest in a hard case posthaste!
That is unfortunate. Whats even more unfortunate is that there really isnt any rugged type cases avaliable for the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
And the large majority of cases in general are the leather portfolio type and your accident is exactly why I want a rugged case over the portfolio style.
I dont see the point of having a screen protector. This isnt a phone you toss around in your pocket...
Instead of hard case you could try not to drop it instead and be more careful
Damage from the corner .. and yes its probably the worst kind of drop ..
from the looks of it .. would definitely be worse if there's no screen protector ..
there are shards of glass at the impact area ..
Having shattered my fair share of screens, this has become my new approach as well - but pointing that out to someone who just lost their tablet is just plain MEAN.

So instead of Gorilla glass and/or an ugly unyielding case, i'll head back to BB for that $129 accidental damage protection plan Considering I only bought a tablet after my kindle flew off the back of my honda in 75mph traffic, I think the warranty cost is more than justified.

The warranty is that much? I guess I'll get it considering that the cost of the warranty is a fraction of what I was about to pay for the tablet (free tablet + $129 warranty < $600 tablet), but I still hate to see that money go.
Everyone post on Otterbox Facebook and email for them to release a case ASAP.

Screen cracked!

So..I dropped my lovely new TMO sgs3 from about 10-12 inches onto a hard surface. The screen cracked in two places from the left to the right side. LCD is fine but glass is fully cracked. It seems that this is beyond unacceptable for "gorilla glass."
I called Tmobile customer service who were useless and suggested a pay $150 for an insurance replacement.
What should I do guys? Do I go to Samsung? The retailer (Walmart)?

How is it a defect, because you dropped your phone and the GLASS cracked? Bad luck? Yes. Defect? No. Even Gorilla Glass can crack. It is not invulnerable to damage resulting from drops. There is nobody to run to, as the damage is a result of your handling/mishandling of the device. There is nobody to foot that bill except for you. Sorry it happened, but that's just how it goes. Sometimes you can drop your phone and get lucky, and sometimes you drop it, and you aren't so lucky. It all depends on how it falls, and what it falls on.

If you used a credit card to purchase the phone and it provides warranty coverage you should check to see if accidental damage is covered. I know my card covers loss/damage for the 1st 90 days in addition to extending the normal warranty.
ETA: You can keep the phone and later see if you can purchase replacement glass. Sell it after fixing it.

He's right. It's common sense to know that the bigger the screen on the phone the more prone it will be to damage. Having a 4.8" screen is amazing but it also makes the phone very fragile. Gorilla Glass 2 to my understanding is basically there to protect the screen from light damage such as scratches/scuffs. Sadly you had a case of bad luck, dropped your phone, and the screen cracked.
There's nothing more to it than you need to be a little more careful next time with such an expensive device. Considering the phone outright sells for $600 I don't think $150 is that bad for a replacement. Good luck.
I agree with everybody on here and to be honest it was your fault. You should of gotten a case of some sort.
I hope you get your phone fixed/replaced.
it does seem this phone is more prone to screen damage than others before it to be honest.....I have personally seen my Samsung Fascinate and Charge take falls from several feet to concrete and spend all their time in a pocket with keys and get tossed around and never even suffered a scratch or crack.....and all that with no case or screen protector either.....

Nexus 4: How's that glass back holding up?

For people who have the Nexus 4, I'm wondering how that glass back is holding up?
The review unit at The Verge already has a small crack, from when it was accidentally knocked off of a table. And Android Central, in their review, said they were already seeing hairlines scratches on the back. I was also in a T-Mobile store today looking at their demo unit, which had a few hairline scratches on the back (even though they just got the phone today).
The glass back is one part of the build of the phone that I a bit worried about in the long run (after all, it didn't work out so well on the iPhone 4).
Thanks for any comments.
This should be in Q&A thread.
Apparently one of the people on this forum that got the device early, dropped it and the back broke
omigosh, maybe I'll just wait for the next Nexus.
Ouch.... I ordered screen protector for front and back, and a soft case but they won't come until later this month.
I guess I will have to stick with my old g2 for a while?
Why is everyone so worried about the BACK glass breaking? If I dropped the phone I'd be a whole lot more concerned over the front SCREEN breaking. The glass on the back cracking would be annoying, but it won't hurt the function of the phone. The front breaking obviously would, and every single smartphone has a glass screen.

I'm curious how well it'd hold up with a Zagg Invisi-Shield on it...if it would still crack simply from shock or not. Either way, i'll still get a bumper case for the phone simply out of paranoia, lol. I drop my phones like crazy. It's amazing how crazy I am over gadgets and protecting them, yet they still seem to slip from my desk/car/hand
I think i'm going to give this phone 2 months before I invest any money into it. I'd rather play it smart and wait than to be "cool" because I was the first to get one (which honestly, nobody really gives a **** about, lol). I had friends who were all "hey, hey look. I got the new 'insertnewphonehere'. I'm one of the first people to get one" and everyone else was like "......um, ok. You want a prize or something?" lol

Yes, every single smartphone does have a glass screen, which is why there would be no point asking this question about any particular phone. It's a necessity and it's not a reason one is going to choose one phone over another.
But there's no reason the back of the Nexus 4 has to be glass, so it is relevant to consider how durable it's going to be when comparing it to other phones. Why effectively double a risk (of a glass part breaking), if it's not necessary?
It's also possible that the back of the Nexus 4 is not as durable as the typical screen. It is interesting that all of the stories of breaking and scratches, so far, are on the back phone.
thing is ..its simple... google heard all of last year how samsung screwed up the build quality of nexus with plastic..so they thought what material while cheap can provide a lil if not lot more premium feel...(the 4s pops into their head)..lg presents a similar phone..and voila nexus 4 is made.. im not saying its bad quality..to be honest its the best quality phone im gonna buy...

Holy, Deja Vu. I swear I saw this post somewhere before. Maybe I was dreaming of you...
Anyways. Screen protectors won't hold the phone together from a drop. A case will. I'm getting a bumper.
Personally I love the glass back. I will not drop this phone and I will be using a case like I do with any expensive smart phone..
Sure, drop it onto a stone, cement or tile floor chances are it will crack. Many phones would.

Why care about the glass breaking at all? There will surely be OEM back plates available for sale on eBay (just as there are for the iPhones) and seeing how easy the Nexus 4 is to take apart, you could just replace it yourself for $20-$30!
Although the Nexus 4 back plate may be a little more expensive as it actually has components on it...

The back and front are both Gorilla Glass 2. if you are THAT worried about it, get ghost armor or something or a otterbox case.

I have not heard of anyone that had a shattered glass back on a Nexus 4. Cracked and scratched is a far cry from shattered.

thing is ..its simple... google heard all of last year how samsung screwed up the build quality of nexus with plastic..so they thought what material while cheap can provide a lil if not lot more premium feel...(the 4s pops into their head)..lg presents a similar phone..and voila nexus 4 is made.. im not saying its bad quality..to be honest its the best quality phone im gonna buy...

Yeah, I imagine something like this was the logic. And it is a nice phone. Defintely a step up in at least perceived build quality. But there are certainly a lot of other ways to get there. The rubbery matte material on the side of the phone has a nice feel to it. If the back had been made from that material, I think it would have had an equally premium feel and seemed a lot more durable. It's also a little sad to think that the best idea Google had was to copy the iPhone.

Cracked and scratched on day 1 (even with review units) is not a good beginning. I suspect it's only a matter of time until we start seeing the image of shattered backs posted online. I hope I turn out to be wrong.

The back of the iPhone 4 is Gorilla Glass too. It didn't stop backs from shattering. Anyway, the point is that there is no reason to take the extra risk of having not just the screen as a fragile component, but also the back. It just doubles the odds of shattering something for no good reason. Sooner or later most people drop their phones. The job of a good designer is to mitigate (not enhance) the possible downsides of this.

By the way, I like this phone. I may still get one. I'm just not excited about having to treat something I carry with me everywhere, like a delicate piece of equipment. I'm not clumsy. I've only dropped my Nexus One a couple times in two years. But things like that happen when you're least expecting it and coming up with a shattered back, rather than a nick or dent is going to be really annoying. (And I hate cases and all that crap. I carry my phone in my pocket. I don't need to make a device designed to be as thin and pocketable as possible, thicker and more cumbersome.)

S6 Edge Screen Cracked. Not even a 6 inch drop.

So we were moving my bed and the mattress was put on side. The mattress is roughly 7 inches high and the phone was a bit on its side, so it slipped and fell on side. I even saw it fall, the curved glass hit the floor first. (Theyre marble tiles) I kept it there, thinking oh its a minor fall, Ill take it when I am back.
I come back and pick it up and I see a crack. I think its a hair or something. But it was a crack!!! It cracked over a 6 inch mini drop with no impact whatsoever. It was in a Spigen Air Cushion case as well.
I have no words. You may see it here: http://imgur.com/a/7xi4C
Luckily the crack in invisible when screen is on but omg wtf. Gorilla Glass my ass. I am selling it off on eBay or whatever when they replace it. Which I hope they will. For free. I am so not paying. I dont even care if I sell at a loss.
Literally fed up with this phone.
Wow, that's sux
How in the world the drop tests are fairly good from waist and head level high, but unbelievable bad at real life accident.

Pretty unfortunate seeing as the screen has been tested over and over again in videos of dropping it. That's what insurance is for, though. I imagine it won't be cheap to repair!
A shame that it cracked from such a low drop, but this much isn't Samsung's fault:

There are safer places to put an expensive electronic device while rearranging furniture.
I don't think it's about whose fault this is, accident happens, sometimes people aren't careful enough, sometimes **** just happened.
On the drop tests, it's rated pretty good, which should reflect on real life in theory. But again, another factor also matters, angle of drops, whether the screen itself has a drop before or not, or maybe a dud, we don't know.
It's just under normal circumstances, it shouldn't crack at 6 inched drop, period, especially for gorilla glass 4, that supposedly to be as strong as superman, except the only weakness is to its kryptonite, its own clear view case from Samsung... Cough cough

First of all, if you're referring to the Spigen Ultra Hybrid case, it frankly probably helped it break. There's too much play in the case, so the device itself already moves around and some drops would result in somewhat of a secondary impact. That's why I can't wait to get rid of mine. The Neo Hybrid/CC is a better bet if you don't mind the design.
Secondly, there's no such thing as a "mini drop with no impact" when you're talking about a device weighing nearly half a pound (with case) encased in glass hitting one of the hardest surfaces (marble) it could possibly fall on. Not to mention I doubt it was only 6 inches (which you stated was 7 inches initially) from the ground; unless your mattress was on the floor, and it wasn't at all lifted when you were moving it.
Finally, glass hitting from a side or corner is never minor. The only drops that qualify as "minor" are flat drops onto soft surfaces. Other than that, you should be expecting a break unless you have a proper case (meaning one that -entirely- encases the device). Will it always break? Of course not. But you should expect that it will nonetheless.
There's nothing unusual that occurred here. This accident is entirely your fault. Gorilla GLASS is still glass, and glass tends to break when it hits something. Especially other hard surfaces.
It's pretty humorous how unrealistic people's expectations of glass has become just because somebody put the word "gorilla" in front of it. If Corning starts selling Gorilla Paper, I'm betting somebody would probably cover themself in it and expect to be bulletproof.
Corning I expect 5% of the profits if you use that for an idea.

You need to learn how physics works. You dropped your phone. It's your fault. Samsung should not, and will not, replace this phone for free. You ****ed up. You pay for it. It could have happened with any phone.
sorry to hear that man. maybe you just got unlucky because i dropped mines from about 6 feet high onto concrete without a case... and literally didnt have a scratch on it. overall ive had a great experience with this phone (even though i still liked my s5 better...)

I predict a ton of people with this complaint. I have the Edge, the large curved screen seems particularly vulnerable. I fear the day I drop mine.

Alright, chill. Most of you going all defensive on Samsungs side, wait for it to happen to you. Sure I placed it somewhere I shouldnt have but it was NOT that high. It should be able to deal with that small a drop, period.
i cracked mine week 2 of owning and been running naked for many years with my other phones and never cracked a screen. just thought i would let you know your not alone and i got an insurance replacement.
it was my fault and only angry at myself but i will say that i have dropped many other phones with no issue so maybe its an easier phone to crack or maybe i hit it just right.
i read a post from a guy that dropped his from his moving 18 wheeler tractor and with no case and it barely had a scratch so who knows.
I dropped mine from about 5 feet height last week and there is not a single scratch. . Luckily it landes on the bottom speaker grills side.. screen would have been a different story...phew.. I would still not use a duly case.. This phone is too hot to put a case on.. if the screen shatters, I would get it replaced. .lol
You really need to understand what hardened glass means, it does not - by any measure - mean it's harder to breaks, as a matter of fact it might actually be easier to break than regular glass. However hardened glass is harder to scratch - which is also the main focus.
So please don't blame either Samsung or Corning for the glass to behave exactly as expected...

[emoji58] this thread needs to die. OP needs to be a big boy and get over it. "Stuff" happens, deal with it.
Yeah. I agree with FluffyR.
What's the purpose of this thread? The OP damaged the thing and want to blame Samsung for it? I don't get it...
@Mainaharen. The so called cheap quality /plastics that Samsung used till the S5 prevented even such damages....
You cannot change the physics of glass/metal....
