Word to the wise(scratch subject)

Well..like everything else I own...it was bound to get some imperfection within a short amount of time in possession. But lemme make myself clearer...I dropped my phone on the pavement and therefore I now have a scratched screen. While we all know metal can't scratch glass..pavement and diamond rings apparently still apply. But this isn't to simply warn all of you of the obvious fact that screen protectors are very handy on any device, but its to inform that no method found on he internet will cure scratches on the glass. From toothpaste to Brasso(which makes it worse actually). Nothing works..and therefore you are doomed to the scratches! Not sure what half he people on the internet are raving about on half the remedies for scratches in glass, but that's all it is, is hype. So learn from me either live with the scratches, buy protectors while you can...or end up forking over the money for a new screen eventually.

Bummer...not even sure if a screen protector would have survived concrete. But a good case would have...

Sorry lol..Was typing it on my phone while watching Reno 911...I meant to say "metal can't scratch gorilla glass as easily".
Otherwise...I guess I'll try and wait out the arrival of HTC bravo or Supersonic...if either come to the US with a sim card carrier, and just give this nexus one to my GF. She claims I'm just being paranoid over something small so I guess she won't mind taking over ownership should a better phone come out.

Your completely giving up on the phone because a simple scratch on the screen, and instead you will wait for the Bravo a phone uglier than the concept model? This scratch must be very, very, bothersome.
I do get heavily irritated over small things such as this, but I would never buy an entire new phone over it. If its noticeable when the phone is on, then maybe yea..

Have you priced out a new screen, by any chance?

All I keep reading is currently a repair for things like screens run 250 from HTC and maybe 75 to 150 from some place in Texas.
As for giving up on the nexus, I didn't mean give up on the nexus...just give it away when they come out with something newer should the specs not be lacking in the hardware section. The all black of the bravo, or even red/black of the supersonic are more my style anyways. But if their specs are worse, ill stick with the nexus.

Luckily I keep the stock case on...
because it seems I forget it is in my lap and I get out of the car, and so far I've dropped it about 5 times on the pavement and it is still beautiful!

Haha..you're totally right the stock case was doing me a great justice but I had gotten out of the car texting and sat my case down in the passenger seat and on the way back and at the edge of the pavement and grass it fell out of my hand lol ... and skipped around a a bit and resulted in one scratch/etch you can see while the phone is on and about 3 more while its off. Even the edges of whatever material the phone is made of has an etch in it. All these are very small seperately but all together are very distracting. I hope eventually I can get the screen repaired for under a hundred. Then I'd buy a protector and be happy with my nexus. But right now the prices to repair them are more than I originally paid for the phone. An I'd rather not pay more than a hundred for screen repair.

The right screen protector, such as the invisibleSHIELD or Clear Protector, would have prevented this.. I only say this cuz of personal experience..

Mine goes in the passenger seat with a seatbelt firmly on and airbags fully deployed.
The wife gets shoved in the glove box

Some watch repairers have buffing machines to take scratches out of glass, you could try to find one of them.

I didn't even put the battery in my Nexus One until after I had put an Invisibleshield on it.

i highly recommend investing in a full phone protector.. i paid $35 and they wrapped my phone entirely in plastic screen protector material. Lifetime warranty on the stuff too.
If it ever gets scratched just bring it back and they replace it free.

Samsung PLASTIC design of Nexus S

This thread is for all the people who cry about the plastic on the new Nexus S phone.
First of all, my sister has a Galaxy S phone i9000 to be precise, and it's been a pain to watch her drop the phone again and again... slippery fingers I guess.. lol The phone has a few scratches but that's all.
I don't even wanna know what would happen to my N1 if I did that to it. Every picture I saw of the N1 dropped was either a broken screen or the housing was damaged to a point it had to be replaced. Because of ONE drop!! I'm thankfull I've never dropped it since I have it on launch day.
So please tell me what's a better solution the Samsung plastic that actualy protects your phone or an aluminium case that will get all banged up?
I vote for the plastic. It sucks because it's glossy, if google fixes this and gives us a matt + some gloss accents would really look cool.

All the drops of my Nexus, and no signs yet. Hope that it stays this way.

I have both... Give me (enough) money and I will do a drop test.

I dropped mine (from chest height, onto tarmac) on it's top left corner. Just has a small stratch there.

I've dropped my Nexus from chest height onto a stone floor, one 2-3 occasions now. Clearly I'm lucky, but there's no sign of external damage.

My N1 fell when I was hanging my mothers curtain, about 2 meters high....not a scratch. Dropped it more than once and that baby just refuses to die. BEST PHONE EVER.

This could have easily been discussed in the many other threads about plastic Galaxy's.
The only thing that should be dropped is this thread.

I was walking with too many things in my hand and the N1 decided to slip out mid stride and bounce across the pavement...2 small scratches top left corner...

the point is, the aluminum case has much less "give" then plastic... so our screens wont shatter as easy

The Nexus S is going to be great... We shouldn't get discourage by some shiny plastic... a phone case can easy fix that.

most of us dont use phone cases is the point... it adds bulk to what most of us consider a "perfect sized" phone...

Yea I've dropped mine several times and I only have 1 tiny scratch on the back battery cover. The rest of the phone looks brand new. I'm using it completely naked after watching the screen torture tests.
I love it. The matte finish really helps protect the phone. We had several Samsung Blackjacks with the same matte finish and when we sold them YEARS later they still looked brand new out of the box.

looks like all the people posted here were lucky in their drop "tests"
but we have people posing on forums:
- that they just sat down with N1 in pocket and it cracked the screen.
- first drop totaly warped the body
- screen cracks from first drops etc.
Again I say I hope I don't drop it once, even though I have the Otterbox commuter series case that feels quite strong.
But I still belive that even though aluminium bodies do have more strenght, they have a higher chance to break something inside the phone due to full shock the phone recieves from the drop, unlike plastic that bends and crumbles on hit and absorbs much of the force from falling.
Aluminium seem it's harder to replace, specialy the unibody designs that HTC does. It's harder to make, harder to service, etc... by that probably the service costs go up to.
Plastic bodies and a snap to take a apart, make and replace.
what do you all think about this? Am I wrong?

[Q] Question About Fascinate Screen

Hi there, Fascinate people!
I have a Captivate on AT&T (a.k.a. the my-signal-runs-away-from-buildings carrier). One of my absolute favorite features of my phone--a feature I had believed was common to all Galaxy S models--is the seemingly indestructible Gorilla Glass screen. I've carried this phone naked in my pocket for months now and the screen is still perfect!
A friend of mine liked my Captivate so much that she purchased a Fascinate as her very first smartphone. She put a screen protector and a case on it (two safety mechanisms I've blatantly rejected in favor of the uberslim Captivate), but not two days after purchasing the phone, she had scratch marks in the glass, below the screen protector in the soft button area. Granted, she has probably been carrying the device in her purse, but nonetheless I was blown away by this! I inspected it further today, and it actually looks like the scratching may be below the surface of the glass.
So my question is this: wtf? Is the Fascinate screen wimpier than the rest of the Galaxy S line? Is it possible that dust entered the phone and scratched the surface below the glass surface? Is this the sort of thing she might get an exchange for? Has anybody else experienced this, especially so quickly after purchasing?

I haven't had any issues that you mention.

I've dropped my phone and had it unprotected since I bought it and it still looks brand new. No idea what's up with your friends phone.

The fascinate does have gorilla glass. It holds up to a lot of abuse: you can't scratch out with keys, etc.
I can't speak to scratches below the screen, never seen anything like that.
Gorilla glass can be scratched (especially by any form of sand, which is more common than you might expect), and it can shatter. This is discussed in the accessories thread.
You also have a few options if you want to keep your phone thin. Look into steinheil, real look etc.screen protectors, also discussed in accessories.
Sorry to hear about your friend's screen. Tender care and a soft clean pocket will get you pretty far, but the back cover especially will scratch up on you no matter how careful you are. Fortunately the back is cheap to replace.

Jewelry is a common scratcher too.
I have a screen protector on my phone, just in case... its an invisible shield, so it covers the whole screen. I passed on the VZW ones because I figured it just covered only the screen, but the invisible shields do have an orange peel kinda look to them.

I have been carrying my fascinate since launch unprotected in my pocket, and my screen is still flawless! I just bought a protector from a local uscc store for the mesmerize that covers the whole screen yesterday! 3 in a pack for $14.95, they fit well (except for maybe 16th of an in. at the edges) and they cover the whole screen!

2 small scratches and 1 small scuff mark on my screen and i have been VERY careful with this phone. not that impressed with the glass. took me weeks to scratch the screen on my TP carrying it the same way i carry the SF. i need to pick up a protector just to prevent any more marks.

Is there an issue with the Nexus 4 back?

I ordered a Nexus 4 today from the Play Store now that its finally back in stock. My 3GS died back at the end of December and I couldn't get the N4, so I picked up an S3 (ATT version) for $0 from Bell.
So my intention is to sell my S3 when my Nexus 4 arrives and I'll pretty much end up breaking even.
Anyways, shortly after buying it I started reading about a bunch of problems with the glass on the back cracking. Now I am somewhat worried. I read through a long thread where people shared their horror stories of the back cracking when falling 1-2 feet. Some people even described the back mysteriously cracking, potentially from sudden changes in temperature.
At the same time I also read posts where people said they've dropped the phone from 3-4 feet several times and the phone is still in perfect condition.
So is there actually a defect with the Nexus 4, or are people just over-exaggerating?
I don't really have any issues with the S3, I just thought that it would be a good idea to switch to the Nexus 4, seeing as I can sell my S3 for more than the N4 costs, but if there is actually a serious problem with the N4, then I will cancel my order and stick with the S3.

No problem here. Have been using it from the last ~30 days with no protection. Obviously it will shatter if you drop it.

I've had mine since launch and no glass cracking.
I usually take the glass spontaneously cracking with a grain of salt, there are so many variables to take into account just come to a conclusion on its own.

Use a case and there won't be.

ive dropped a few times from my lap with a tpu case on no damage yet. Once launched off my lap pretty fast into a a thick metal table pole with no damage (Was scared though). Next from my lap getting up onto wood flooring.
I probably wouldn't risk using this phone without a case though.

I was thinking about getting the Rearth Ringke Slim. It's a really clean, slim looking case. I know it probably won't do a whole lot in absorbing shock, but it will at least prevent the back from getting all scratched
I've only ever dropped my phone once (my arm got caught on my headphones while running and my iPhone 3GS flew 10 feet onto the pavement). I'm very careful with my phone, I'm just making sure that the phone doesn't self destruct, or shatter upon the smallest impact.

The word issue implies a flaw, which it is not. But it's made of glass so get a case or you'll be sorry because all glass can crask for any number of obvious reasons. It's a ridiculous pipe dream to imagine that we have the technology to make glass that won't ever crack from a three-foot fall. It just doesn't exist. We do however have the most durable glass that's ever existed or our phones wouldn't be nearly as cool. There's a reason Apple went to an aluminum back on the iPhone 5, though. LG probably should have done the same but they decided to risk it to make it look a little cooler than the average black brick.

Unfortunately I'm one of the people with a cracked back. It was in my pocket when it happened too. I wouldn't say it's a flaw, just damned unlucky. I would recommend buying a case, although it's a shame to cover the beautiful design of the phone.
The Ringke slim case is alright but I'd suggest looking into a Nillkin case. One of my buddy's has a Nillkin case with a textured back and it's awesome. Just a thought.

Glass shatters when dropped, thats nothing new. Front glass or rear glass, both will shatter if dropped on a hard surface(depending on the point of impact and all that of course.. ).
However, you want to be careful with the back glass, it is not Gorilla glass(not scratch resistent), and will scratch easily without you even knowing how and when it happened.

Yes there is a problem, it is beautiful and makes every other phone look boring
Other than that it is glass, what do you expect to happen when dropped/scratched? If there was a real problem there would be a lot more people coming here and post about it...

I've seen a fair number of posts concerning the backs cracking. Also keep in mind XDA is generally used by the die hards. The vast majority of Nexus 4 users (and I wish I knew approximately how many there were) wouldn't come to XDA to discuss their issues with the device. At first I thought all those tech websites glorified the back glass cracking on the device - now I'm fairly sure they didn't.

S6 Edge Screen Cracked. Not even a 6 inch drop.

So we were moving my bed and the mattress was put on side. The mattress is roughly 7 inches high and the phone was a bit on its side, so it slipped and fell on side. I even saw it fall, the curved glass hit the floor first. (Theyre marble tiles) I kept it there, thinking oh its a minor fall, Ill take it when I am back.
I come back and pick it up and I see a crack. I think its a hair or something. But it was a crack!!! It cracked over a 6 inch mini drop with no impact whatsoever. It was in a Spigen Air Cushion case as well.

Luckily the crack in invisible when screen is on but omg wtf. Gorilla Glass my ass. I am selling it off on eBay or whatever when they replace it. Which I hope they will. For free. I am so not paying. I dont even care if I sell at a loss.

Pretty unfortunate seeing as the screen has been tested over and over again in videos of dropping it. That's what insurance is for, though. I imagine it won't be cheap to repair!

A shame that it cracked from such a low drop, but this much isn't Samsung's fault:

There are safer places to put an expensive electronic device while rearranging furniture.

I don't think it's about whose fault this is, accident happens, sometimes people aren't careful enough, sometimes **** just happened.
On the drop tests, it's rated pretty good, which should reflect on real life in theory. But again, another factor also matters, angle of drops, whether the screen itself has a drop before or not, or maybe a dud, we don't know.
It's just under normal circumstances, it shouldn't crack at 6 inched drop, period, especially for gorilla glass 4, that supposedly to be as strong as superman, except the only weakness is to its kryptonite, its own clear view case from Samsung... Cough cough

First of all, if you're referring to the Spigen Ultra Hybrid case, it frankly probably helped it break. There's too much play in the case, so the device itself already moves around and some drops would result in somewhat of a secondary impact. That's why I can't wait to get rid of mine. The Neo Hybrid/CC is a better bet if you don't mind the design.
Secondly, there's no such thing as a "mini drop with no impact" when you're talking about a device weighing nearly half a pound (with case) encased in glass hitting one of the hardest surfaces (marble) it could possibly fall on. Not to mention I doubt it was only 6 inches (which you stated was 7 inches initially) from the ground; unless your mattress was on the floor, and it wasn't at all lifted when you were moving it.
Finally, glass hitting from a side or corner is never minor. The only drops that qualify as "minor" are flat drops onto soft surfaces. Other than that, you should be expecting a break unless you have a proper case (meaning one that -entirely- encases the device). Will it always break? Of course not. But you should expect that it will nonetheless.
There's nothing unusual that occurred here. This accident is entirely your fault. Gorilla GLASS is still glass, and glass tends to break when it hits something. Especially other hard surfaces.
It's pretty humorous how unrealistic people's expectations of glass has become just because somebody put the word "gorilla" in front of it. If Corning starts selling Gorilla Paper, I'm betting somebody would probably cover themself in it and expect to be bulletproof.
Corning I expect 5% of the profits if you use that for an idea.

You need to learn how physics works. You dropped your phone. It's your fault. Samsung should not, and will not, replace this phone for free. You ****ed up. You pay for it. It could have happened with any phone.

sorry to hear that man. maybe you just got unlucky because i dropped mines from about 6 feet high onto concrete without a case... and literally didnt have a scratch on it. overall ive had a great experience with this phone (even though i still liked my s5 better...)

I predict a ton of people with this complaint. I have the Edge, the large curved screen seems particularly vulnerable. I fear the day I drop mine.

Alright, chill. Most of you going all defensive on Samsungs side, wait for it to happen to you. Sure I placed it somewhere I shouldnt have but it was NOT that high. It should be able to deal with that small a drop, period.

i cracked mine week 2 of owning and been running naked for many years with my other phones and never cracked a screen. just thought i would let you know your not alone and i got an insurance replacement.
it was my fault and only angry at myself but i will say that i have dropped many other phones with no issue so maybe its an easier phone to crack or maybe i hit it just right.
i read a post from a guy that dropped his from his moving 18 wheeler tractor and with no case and it barely had a scratch so who knows.

I dropped mine from about 5 feet height last week and there is not a single scratch. . Luckily it landes on the bottom speaker grills side.. screen would have been a different story...phew.. I would still not use a duly case.. This phone is too hot to put a case on.. if the screen shatters, I would get it replaced. .lol

You really need to understand what hardened glass means, it does not - by any measure - mean it's harder to breaks, as a matter of fact it might actually be easier to break than regular glass. However hardened glass is harder to scratch - which is also the main focus.
So please don't blame either Samsung or Corning for the glass to behave exactly as expected...

@Mainaharen. The so called cheap quality /plastics that Samsung used till the S5 prevented even such damages....
You cannot change the physics of glass/metal....
