Word to the wise(scratch subject)

Well..like everything else I own...it was bound to get some imperfection within a short amount of time in possession. But lemme make myself clearer...I dropped my phone on the pavement and therefore I now have a scratched screen. While we all know metal can't scratch glass..pavement and diamond rings apparently still apply. But this isn't to simply warn all of you of the obvious fact that screen protectors are very handy on any device, but its to inform that no method found on he internet will cure scratches on the glass. From toothpaste to Brasso(which makes it worse actually). Nothing works..and therefore you are doomed to the scratches! Not sure what half he people on the internet are raving about on half the remedies for scratches in glass, but that's all it is, is hype. So learn from me either live with the scratches, buy protectors while you can...or end up forking over the money for a new screen eventually.

Bummer...not even sure if a screen protector would have survived concrete. But a good case would have...

Sorry lol..Was typing it on my phone while watching Reno 911...I meant to say "metal can't scratch gorilla glass as easily".
Otherwise...I guess I'll try and wait out the arrival of HTC bravo or Supersonic...if either come to the US with a sim card carrier, and just give this nexus one to my GF. She claims I'm just being paranoid over something small so I guess she won't mind taking over ownership should a better phone come out.

Your completely giving up on the phone because a simple scratch on the screen, and instead you will wait for the Bravo a phone uglier than the concept model? This scratch must be very, very, bothersome.
I do get heavily irritated over small things such as this, but I would never buy an entire new phone over it. If its noticeable when the phone is on, then maybe yea..

Have you priced out a new screen, by any chance?

All I keep reading is currently a repair for things like screens run 250 from HTC and maybe 75 to 150 from some place in Texas.
As for giving up on the nexus, I didn't mean give up on the nexus...just give it away when they come out with something newer should the specs not be lacking in the hardware section. The all black of the bravo, or even red/black of the supersonic are more my style anyways. But if their specs are worse, ill stick with the nexus.

Luckily I keep the stock case on...

Haha..you're totally right the stock case was doing me a great justice but I had gotten out of the car texting and sat my case down in the passenger seat and on the way back and at the edge of the pavement and grass it fell out of my hand lol ... and skipped around a a bit and resulted in one scratch/etch you can see while the phone is on and about 3 more while its off. Even the edges of whatever material the phone is made of has an etch in it. All these are very small seperately but all together are very distracting. I hope eventually I can get the screen repaired for under a hundred. Then I'd buy a protector and be happy with my nexus. But right now the prices to repair them are more than I originally paid for the phone. An I'd rather not pay more than a hundred for screen repair.

The right screen protector, such as the invisibleSHIELD or Clear Protector, would have prevented this.. I only say this cuz of personal experience..

Mine goes in the passenger seat with a seatbelt firmly on and airbags fully deployed.
The wife gets shoved in the glove box

Some watch repairers have buffing machines to take scratches out of glass, you could try to find one of them.

I didn't even put the battery in my Nexus One until after I had put an Invisibleshield on it.

i highly recommend investing in a full phone protector.. i paid $35 and they wrapped my phone entirely in plastic screen protector material. Lifetime warranty on the stuff too.
If it ever gets scratched just bring it back and they replace it free.

cracked a semi-circle chunk on the edge of the screen about a centimeter in diameter.
no noticeable effect to touch sensitivity - i guess this probably voids the warranty and might as well root it now lol.

Seriously though, the n1 should not be about to handle that kind of drop. Yes the outside is metal, but its very thin and therefore a shock wave will pass right through it. If it is incased in some type of rubbery material which would absorb the shock it would of been fine, but it doesnt have that.
Thats why I bought a thin rubbery silicon case. When it falls the case absords the whole impact shock with little energy being transfered to the actual n1. Hard cases add more thickness to the phone and therefore more material can help absorb the shock, but something that deforms a little is the only real way to protect something from a hard fall. Even with a hard case, a 10+ drop on concrete and you can most likely say good bye to your n1. With a silicon case there is a good chance it will be perfectly fine.
I can get into really techinal terms, but I'm trying not to do that because I understand not everyone is a material science engineer.

Judging by the OP, I felt what i said was approate even if it should be common knowledge.

Seriously? don't get a phone this expensive if you still drop your phone.i haven't dropped a phone since I had a razor. As I said, don't buy a $600 that has a glass screen and drop it. Take anything made of glass and drop it 5 feet and it will shatter .

I disagree with your sentiments. Cellphones are by nature prone to droppage, in and out of hands and pockets many times a day. It is unreasonable to expect the average user not to end up dropping it at some point. I say to phone manufacturers don't design and sell a $600 phone with a glass screen if you can't engineer it to withstand an occasional fall, since many of us mere mortals are likely to eventually drop it.

See the drop test videos - it is designed to stand some drops.
To expect a glass screen to successfully withstand multiple 5+ ft drops onto a very hard surface (concrete) is a bit extreme. Glass is still glass and will break if there's enough of an impulse imparted on it.
From the testing videos they demoed they appear to have tested common drops, ~3 ft or more from the appearance, and it looks fairly robust at that point.
I don't think it's a common scenario to take it out of your pocket and have it fall 5 ft unless we have a high percentage of giants here at XDA who have big, clumsy hands.
While it is unreasonable to expect someone to never drop their phone, from what Google has shown, the testing for structural integrity appears to have been done for "common" falls (slips coming out of pocket, knocked off of table/counter, etc.) based on the fall height. Falls of 5+ feet are likely pretty uncommon for most users and I think you'd be hard pressed to come up with a slim solution (housing material/thickness) for a glass screen that would consistently withstand falls from that height. Unless.....

they are designed to be dropped some, but you also have some things you can't design for.
For example we were just talking about a 5 ft drop on asphault. If I design it to be dropped from there, what angle contact angle am i talking about? Obviously a fall straight on its back will be different than a corner hit. Does manufactoring it to survive both drop types interfer with eachother? How much more does it cost? How much size will it add? Maybe I could use better materials, but then that also comes with added cost.
Also, it doesnt matter how many safety meetings you have, people will find a way to mess up there n1's in some new way.
So alot of this comes down to cost, and there becomes a point where you say the end user should have some responsibility.

The phone is sturdy indeed! I have dropped it several times by now (more than I have dropped any other phone, anyway) and it has always withstood the falls like a champ. Last week I dropped it on asphalt from 5 / 6 feet: time slowed down as I watched it fall and bounce, both the battery cover and the battery itself jumping out while the phone finally slid face down on the concrete for 2 or three feet. I don't know how long I stood there staring at it before picking it up, all while thinking what a good phone it had been.
You know what? The screen was perfectly fine, and only the soft part at the bottom had a very obvious dent where it had first hit the floor. The phone might not be invulnerable, but it's definitely tougher than it looks.
Not everything's good though. From my experience this phone is very prone to falling. It's so thin and wide that gripping it firmly is difficult, and can you guys explain why it doesn't have a hole or something to fix a lace on it or something?
Seriously, I feel that's the one thing the N1 is sorely lacking.

the mock n2 pictures have one, but I for one think its FUGLY. Seriously, just get a thin silicon rubbary case and the grip issue is gone.

True. I don't really like cases though, someone once said they're like making Angelina Jolie wear a fat suit and I agree. Might buy one anyway in order to stop dropping the goddamn phone.
By the way, do you guys know if it's possible to replace the soft bottom part? It hurts to look at it so dented and damaged.

That is rediculous.i have yet to drop my N1, G1, MT3g, blackberry 9700,or my HD2.It's about making a conscious thought of "I'm taking this $600 phone out if my pocket. I should be careful".

I haven't dropped my N1 yet either, but I know it will happen. You're acting as if you have some inhuman ability of never dropping things that are expensive - I'm going to assume you rarely take your phone out of your pocket when outside, and when you do you most likely pay too much attention to it as if its a baby. I can imagine you over gripping a phone in order to prevent a dent or 2, watching it carefully as if its a life or death situation..
I'm probably exaggerating, but I really don't see how you do it. You must be a very carefull individual.

I'm thinking of buying a GS2 and what scares me the most are the threads by people who cracked the screen.
All my phones fall, from the first siemens (back in the '90) to my my last htc hero.
At least once a month it makes a flight off the sofa, off the table, on the cement ... at most the back cover comes off, the battery flies away and the body (not the display) reports some scratches.
My hero also shows signs of bites and scratches by a cat, but nothing more!
(try to control a cat a let me know ...)
I read the last post of a poor guy whose s2 fell to less than one meter on the gravel and the display cracked!
But is it really so fragile?!
Is there someone whose s2 has been dropped from a reasonable height and the screen survived ?

You have a 4.3 inch screen, 8mm phone, ofcourse it's fragile. All of them are. Like ^ said, buy a nice case, and you'll have some protection against small falls.

If you cannot afford the Case Mate Tough Case , then Amazon has some reasonably cheap gel cases , do not buy a silicone case as they attract dirt/dust like a magnet

OP, I dropped mine from 1 meter height a number of times, but always on wooden or carpeted floor. Never dropped on concrete or gravel. But I bet most modern smart phones with large touchscreens will crack if dropped on hard surface landing on the screen or even not on the screen but at a proper angle like someone already mentioned.
Either buy a good case, or buy a tough weather and impact proof phone.

I dropped mine the first day from about 1.7 meters/5.6 feet(?) (I guess that's the height my ear is at) on the pavement. It's fine, just scratches and scuffs on the corners and the back, but nothing bad.
Bought the CaseMate Tough Case though, just to be sure.
PS. Damn cats! mine keeps battling my remote, it lights up as he touches it... chews through the lcd screens

I have just a full-body screen protector on mine and have dropped it a couple of times and its been fine. What part of the phone that hits the ground first is going to make a big difference too. If it hits the ground vertically on a corner than yes, you're more likely to have the screen crack. A couple of the reported cracks were from stress where the screen was in someones pocket and either pressed against something or sat on. Also, consider how many are out there now and the cracked screen reports are less than a dozen. I was afraid of it when I first got it but less so now.

Having come from Nokia phones and Htc phones.. this is as light as a feather and just slipped through my hands quiet a few times.. but you get used to it..
Once it dropped of the table but no harm done. yes it is very light and I would suggest getting it a case or something to make it feel more in the HAnds although I never used cases on any of my phones leave alone screen protectors.
But yeah you get used to it after a while so go GET one

i threw mine, it still works. Buy a big leather case. Top tip of the day, it saves you ££££'s

600€ for the phone so the price of the case would not be a problem.
A must have accessory (for my use) is an active car holder; one you put the phone in without having to plug cables, to put the phone out from the case, etc. ( like the original samsung one )
Anyway, thanks to everybody.
At the end I think I'll go for the phone, some "invisible skin" protector and an insurance.

I am really a bit confused about this entire thread. Maybe I just haven't seen the flood of threads complaining about cracked screens, but the only ones I've seen even remotely related are:
1) Some dude dropped a dumb bell on his phone. You be the judge of whether or not that is indicative of the screen's robustness.
2) Some dude dropped his phone into the toilet for a swim with some poo and water. And, it still survived.
So, I guess if you want a phone that is impervious to heavy metal weights being dropped directly on it, then yes, I would be wary of this phone. The good news is, if you're the type to possibly have your mobile phone go for a **** swim every once in a while, you're in luck.
All joking aside, get a decent case for it, screen protectors, and the phone is as well built as any other well built phone. Plus, the phone in its "naked state" is a bit too thin for me anyway.

I dropped mine from like 1,5M on solid stone. Landed on a corner which now has a little dent other then that there is nothing to see...
I was actually surprised it survived i have seen phones die from less.

Dropped mine from 1m onto solid stone floor. Landed flat on the screen side. 2 or 3 fix points on backcover opened. Other than that, not even a scratch. Back cover was also ok.
I have read these unfortunate threads before and I admit I was scarred to to pick it up lol.

Not much problems in case of a back drop.

Are people still surprised that dropping a pane of glass causes it to break, or do you think that Samsung is using magical glass that is not prone to breakage? Never really understood the utility of a drop test.
If the device is metal, it'll either dent or bend. If the device is plastic it will either survive unscathed or crack. If the impact is not directly on the glass, glass may or may not break depending on the force, angle, etc. If the impact is directly to the glass, it will break. There, I just described the drop test outcomes for every phone or tablet ever made.

It also depends on the design of the device itself. note II survived the drop test. So not all results are the same

Note II is also smaller and lighter, with less surface area. Still, it's a pretty safe bet that if you drop the device glass down onto a hard surface, it'll break. If it doesn't, you just got extremely lucky, but it's not because the Note 8 has stronger/weaker glass than ipad mini, note II, etc.

I agree, complete waste if money.

Its funny. Alot of Samsung mobile devices get marked down in reviews for their choice of materials used in their casings. This test shows that it is durable at least.
I dont think I know any iPhone users who havent cracked their screen at one point or another from even the smallest of drops and ones where the screen didnt even land face down. So much so that my younger brother seems to repair one from someone he knows every few months as a hobby (he is an engineering student at university and likes to tinker with things). I'm not particuarly anti Apple, but that always seems to be the bench mark which everything is judged

It's an excellent case for only $7. All corners are protected except for the one where the pen sits

I unfortunatly did my own drop test! I had it in my outside suit pocket, and my bag pushed it out and fell from about 3.5 ft face down onto a NYC sidewalk. Fortunatly all that happened is the raised fray border got scratched/dented! Not cracks or scratches to screen! Plastic held up very well, almost had a heart atrack.
That one had a loose nack by sd slot, but found out after drop the whole back can be popped off. Hopefully someone will make some cool eubber/aluminim backs!
Since I had a loose back.
/usb port and backlight bleed, I returned for a fresh one! I want that stand pouch but cant find it online! Anyone seen it? I think this may be the same.

Anyway...the plastic and note are very durable!

I dont think I know any iPhone users who havent cracked their screen at one point or another from even the smallest of drops and ones where the screen didnt even land face down. So much so that my younger brother seems to repair one from someone he knows every few months as a hobby (he is an engineering student at university and likes to tinker with things). I'm not particuarly anti Apple, but that always seems to be the bench mark which everything is judged

The front of every standard smartphone in the world is made out of glass. Glass has been known for being fragile for thousands of years. Anyone who claims that phone X is tougher than phone Y and tries to use that as an argument for or against a particular device is an idiot. I would say the same about people who buy devices just so they can make videos dropping them.

So Im still carrying my second one sans case..
Dropped TWO times yesterday, both about 4 ft off ground. Both times it lands face down, perfectly landing on the lip on the bezel(makes a real hefty noise). Barely a dent(tile and hard floor). I really think the glass is a hybrid with plastic, i didnt even get worried( this is 4 drop already)
Plastic=DURABLE

Wow!!! You must have nerves of steel! That kind of thing would freak me out!
But good to know your Note 8 has been surviving just fine.

I agree that if you drop any phone on its front then your likely to damage the screen as it is fragile. My arguement is that some phones are more fragile than others if you drop them on the side (iphone) as the way that the case is designed (although sturdy to hold) transfers alot of the force onto the screen rather than has any "give" to absorb some of the impact.

Who's paying for these worthless tests buying new devices and breaking them. Please send me the money instead we already know how to break phone screens

That's awful! Very sorry for you. It can be so gut wrenching to lose a great (and expensive!) device in an instant like that.

Like a lot of people I'm suddenly debating an edge but I'm worried about losing a rim of aluminum or plastic around the screen. I don't do cases and do drop my phone on concrete around twice a year but have never broken anything, am I right in guessing that edge screens lose a lot of durability without a case?

Dropped mine twice, both times onto my Kitchen floor (stone). Not even a scratch, much to my surprise.
Haven't found a case I like yet, and I'm insured, but will eventually get a flip cover I think.

Dropped my on kitchen floor yesterday thankfully not a mark on it !!

I've had mine for over 2 months, and it's in mint condition. You learn early on that the thing is a bit of a tank, but still manages to be well-manufactured with a premium feel. I've had a few drops thag were hard to look at, but a spray-adhesive screen protector and a flimsy TPU case bought online have protected the phone from any cracks or scratches.

i watched a drop test on youtube of this phone a while back vs an iphone, and although ymmv compared to the video, it did seem like the S6 was pretty tough, it took dropping the phone from around 10feet high before the glass smashed on back or front! I was very impressed.
I want to also highlight how I've gone without a case for the few months I've had this phone, and there isn't one scratch to be seen! Yes it is a fingerprint magnet, but I seriously thought that the back of the phone would look awful pretty quickly, but it's just pristine!

Dropped mine again in the kitchen again no damage thankfully.

My phone is cracked to **** - top right corner, middle of screen and on rear! I may need to rethink a glass phone next time lol

Without a good case; this thing is so painful to hands, i mean sharp rear lines. After a long surfing on the hand, it is giving cramp. [emoji51]

Yes I dropped mine onto a beer can on the floor which still had some beer in it, this made sure the can did not move. The result of the 3ft fall? the pixels at the impact point are completely knackered, so will need to claim on the insurance when it comes to selling it for the Note 6, as I imagine the phone is probably a write off as it is the screen as well as the glass. Not sure I think much of this Gorilla Glass!

I owned the xperia z and z3 and never managed to crack these once. On the three occasions I dropped my s6e+ it resulted in damage. Why buy an expensive beautiful glass phone to put it in a plastic case?

yep yesterday camera len broken. looks like a right pain to do and looks like camera its self looks damaged too.
