Screen cracked! - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

So..I dropped my lovely new TMO sgs3 from about 10-12 inches onto a hard surface. The screen cracked in two places from the left to the right side. LCD is fine but glass is fully cracked. It seems that this is beyond unacceptable for "gorilla glass."
I called Tmobile customer service who were useless and suggested a pay $150 for an insurance replacement.
What should I do guys? Do I go to Samsung? The retailer (Walmart)?
Help!

I appreciate the reply....it seems like a defect though...I had a Samsung vibrant for two years and it survived a motorcycle accident without a scratch to the screen...I would think/hope that gorilla glass 2 would be at least equally strong. I've also read rumors that the us versions of the phone don't include gorilla glass...

How is it a defect, because you dropped your phone and the GLASS cracked? Bad luck? Yes. Defect? No. Even Gorilla Glass can crack. It is not invulnerable to damage resulting from drops. There is nobody to run to, as the damage is a result of your handling/mishandling of the device. There is nobody to foot that bill except for you. Sorry it happened, but that's just how it goes. Sometimes you can drop your phone and get lucky, and sometimes you drop it, and you aren't so lucky. It all depends on how it falls, and what it falls on.

He cant sell the phone because asurion will ask for the phone back. The only thing you can do is pay the deductible for a new phone. Even though its gorilla glass, once you drop it on that certain angle the screen will definitely crack.

If you used a credit card to purchase the phone and it provides warranty coverage you should check to see if accidental damage is covered. I know my card covers loss/damage for the 1st 90 days in addition to extending the normal warranty.
ETA: You can keep the phone and later see if you can purchase replacement glass. Sell it after fixing it.

He's right. It's common sense to know that the bigger the screen on the phone the more prone it will be to damage. Having a 4.8" screen is amazing but it also makes the phone very fragile. Gorilla Glass 2 to my understanding is basically there to protect the screen from light damage such as scratches/scuffs. Sadly you had a case of bad luck, dropped your phone, and the screen cracked.
There's nothing more to it than you need to be a little more careful next time with such an expensive device. Considering the phone outright sells for $600 I don't think $150 is that bad for a replacement. Good luck.

I agree with everybody on here and to be honest it was your fault. You should of gotten a case of some sort.
I hope you get your phone fixed/replaced.

it does seem this phone is more prone to screen damage than others before it to be honest.....I have personally seen my Samsung Fascinate and Charge take falls from several feet to concrete and spend all their time in a pocket with keys and get tossed around and never even suffered a scratch or crack.....and all that with no case or screen protector either.....

Yeah it's your fault but the same time if I was in a accident in 2013 car and the air bags don't deploy I'm having my case herd in somebody court. Just saying. Anyway you ass out, pay 150 bro.... I wonder if its the curve of the glass all the way around the edges is what makes it break easy. Who knows but get a case i bought a case before i even recieved the phone

those cases make me sick to my stomach
why do we pay big bucks for thin phones and wrap them in 1/2" of rubber and make them look like a Sprint Nextel brick phone from 2002?

So we don't have to pay insurance fee's when said thin phone is dropped.
Also depends on your life, like me i work under houses, in attics, tight places with dirt, dust and damp areas. A tough case like the otterbox ones is a must for my line of work.
That nextel brick phone took a 7 story bouncing drop and still worked btw.

I agree with you, it's a cell phone that will be on your person 95% of the time you're out of the house. This phone should withstand many drops! I'm sorry to hear this phone is this fragile. People act as if you threw it down, it was an accident and ANY "mobile" phone should be expected to withstand such drops!

Gorilla glass my ass!!

Dude I want to kill myself right now. Got two 1cm scratches on the middle bottom of my xoom. Not noticeable when the screen is on but jesus christ. It was with a ****en water bottle no metal.
I'm dying inside, need help. Anyway of minimizing this?
I bought this from verizon the day of release, is it possible to return and cancel contract? This sounds rediculous but I would love to restart the whole purchase process......****KKKKK

Hey that rhymes
Small particles which are harder than gorilla glass can stick to either the glass surface or the plastic surface of your water bottle. Accidentally rub them into the glass with the water bottle and you can definitely scratch the glass.
Gorilla glass absolutely requires a screen protector.
As for the return, most places just make sure the serial number matches and the parts are in the box (cables, charger, etc). Never had anyone look closely at the display. Though if they saw it, I'm sure they would reject the return.
any suggestions? ive thought about saying there is a defect in the software/hardware...to do an exchange..or purchasing one off contacting and switching?!
help me people..HELP MEE
If it's not noticeable when you're using it I'm sure you'll forget about it. No need to lie.
Calm down and take a few days to think about if you really care that much.

And there are other people who have scratched such screens. It can happen. So why bother risking it when a screen protector can be had for under $10? Well maybe under $20 for a tablet.
i agree with the others: don't take it back to the store just because of 2 tiny scratches. With time, you will forget it. If it's not really visible when using, why stress? It's hard for you to go to sleep knowing that your xoom is not being used with a scratch on it?
I remember when I scratched the hell out of my 42-inch plasma tv when I was moving a few years ago. I was so upset, especially at the guy who let the door close on the screen. Once the tv was turned on, couldn't see the scratch, so I stopped worrying and my stress levels went down dramatically

Whatever you try be careful as you may cause more damage. Personally, I would try a small amount of toothpaste on a microfiber cloth. This method completely removed a scratch on my Epic 4G (Gorilla glass).
I'm actually pretty surprised by this.
My Samsung Vibrant has gorilla glass and has taken a serious pounding from not even caring about the keys in my pocket to actually falling face down on the sidewalk.
This is why I got insurance on my Xoom from BB.
it was a PLASTIC poland spring bottle.
im so sick to my stomach over the purchase amount and how fast it scratched. its disheartning...i mean, i have a nexus S now too (dropped 524 for it) and it doesnt have anything...
granted..i left the bottle in my duffle bag with my xoom, but seriously...nothing else in there..i guess i am freaking out but i dont get it.
i know its a low life move but im within my 14days return policy and maybe i can get away with making up false claims of software issues without the technician being too penetrating in operating it...and if so..ill walk away, head in lap, and accept the scratches.
ill post the damn pictures of it right now

Good luck man, I'd be rright there with you if that happened to me. It is your own idiocracy for not having a screen protector on I left the plastin on that said where the volume and whatnot on my xoom for two days till I got a screen protector.
But either way I'm rooting for you, let me know how things turn out.
And for the haters I know its his fault and it really don't effect anything significant, but can you honestly say you wouldn't try the same thing? I mean its not like he had it in a bag with a handful of coins, it was a water bottle, imagine that being you. Trying to be all healthy by drinking water only for it to turn on you and chomp up your new multi hundred dollar device's screen.
Now the real story, you left it in a duffel bag unprotected? I did that once with my kindle and the screen cracked. What do you expect will happen?

Galaxy s3 vs. Iphone 4s Drop Test

In this video you can check out a test drop from the two of the best and famous smartphones in the world.
I love my galaxy s2 for everything that it has i think it's a perfect phone for me and i won't change it for a while.
it has enough power to play videos and the camera is also super b what else do you people want from a phone.
I have no idea why the samsung galaxy s3 is better in any way than the galaxy s2, i know i know quad core and the bigger display, yeah right.

damn that was quite embarrassing to have a iPhone beating it

it's not made for crack resistant it's scratch resistant. GG2 is thinner so it cracks easier
That's a shame. I guess I'll keep my GS2 this year. It might not be the latest tech, but it's built like a tank. I'm guessing the square shape hugs the frame better than the s3 "pebble".
Why are people slamming Samsung?
The SIII have a much larger glass on the font than the iphone 4, so of course it will break more easily.
Gorilla glass is never designed to protect the phone from a fall, it is only hardened for scratch resistance.
If you want to protect your phone from a drop, get an Otterbox case.
People will complain about almost anything. Doesn't matter. Maybe the phone should be bullet proof. BOTH PHONES BROKE. SMH
I could care less about the iphone. The s2 survived nearly every drop on youtube while the s3 broke 4 with 6 phones on the two youtube vids I saw. For someone like me who hates cases and loves piece of mind it doesn't make much sense for me to upgrade. I've dropped my s2 on hard pavement twice, and other than a small chip on it's hump its still perfect.

people should remember that it's gorilla glass and not gorilla diamond/hardened granite/robocop/chuck norris - it's still glass.
Samsung did the best they can by providing a slightly hardened glass - The phone has been made extra slim and light and it isn't advertised to be destruction proof so one should know the weigh the potential risk involved in dropping it before buying it, and care for it as such.

View it this way, how long do you think normal glass would have lasted you?
Dude don't tell me its not useful. Here's the story of my Epic 4G.
i have 3 scratches on screen barely visible, only can tell when you hold to the side. normal viewing; you cant see it. it had fell out of my pocket when i was taking out slid across concrete for about 3 feet and thats it.
I have a tiny dent on the bottom of my phone it happen when i got of my car and was walking to my door and all of suddenly it flew out of my hand and landed standing up on brick and bounced and slammed across the brick.
i have some scratches on the top left of the silverish part from falling down, sliding across any surface it touches.
This phone is durable regardless of this amazing Glass.
Try that on an iPhone! HAHA Good Luck, either that or any tft lcd screen.

Lol I'm not attacking the durability of the phone, I brag about it. My phone has been dropped and tossed so many times and I had at most a scratch on the "chrome" lawlawlawl. I just got so used to it that when it dropped on its face I casually picked it up and was horrified lol I'm not used to my epic getting hut its definitely time for a new one though. My speaker died about a week ago. I just don't want that cheap ass GS3 and the evo lte has problems....
And dude that questioned normal glass, my hero didn't have gorilla glass and I dropped it into the train tracks and when I got it up the only damage was the paint scratched off of the physical call button, but then again I was a lot more careful with it because it didn't have anything special lol

when i woke up i realized i didn't have my phone either
outside the garage i found the phone leaning on a rock face down
apparently the phone was in my lap and flung out when i got out of the car.
thank you gorilla glass
no damage
lol thats why i was horrified to see it finally gave in, because it fell so many times face down (i even challenged my friend with his iphone 4 to a throw test to see if he really believed that iphones wont break, needless to say I tossed my phone to show him just how frail his iphone really is because he refused to throw it the way i did even though my phone walked away harmless)
i just thought gorilla glass was indestructible, prolly cuz i associated that with "scratch resistant" lolololol but uptill now i believed it lolol

But, it is made of GLASS, so I don't see a reason to blame Samsung. You might as well blame the people that made the "pavement" so hard....

Bendable screens will fix it
The plastic looks great! Only a slight scratch. Not the glass however...

I know right, glass can't shatter is the screen would be bendable...

sorry. a beautiful jewel like this... reveals how drop test on youtube are even more irrelevant. its a matter of luckiness to me. mine fell from 73cm of the floor and nothing. had a silicon case when it fell it was like bouncing because I think it hit the floor vertically first.
next time get a flipcover i dont know if it protects screen when dropping or some kind of front protection. thats what i'd do.
I feel for you mate. Really do. Same happened with my galaxy s3, that made me move to the note 2.
I found a guy, who repaired the broken glass (i bought a new front glass, he peeled off the old broken one and replaced it with the new) and the phone looked OK, and worked fine, but it had touchscreen issues, missed inputs and it never was the same again. I put up with it for 2 months but I eventually had to change.
I hope you will have luck with samsung. They will make a full repair hopefully...

thank god m unmarried...mate i droped my s2 too several times n i got not even a single scratch on it....i think coz of the light weight samsung phones get less impact on the ground...
Gorilla Glass had some explaining to do.
That's pathetic. Make the screens out of plastic if that's the result of using glass.
I can't tell you how many iPhone's I've seen with smashed screens from a single drop. But at least Apple replaces their devices...

My condolences. I've been very vocal before about the SGS3's glass. but my drop on Friday ended up looking like yours. In fact, I'm getting very mild but not unpleasant electrical shocks as I write this...
Note II tomorrow. In spite of almost acromegalic hands, I just might buy a case. Will definitely be buying insurance.
We live and learn. Sometimes.....

Apple only replace for no cost if it's a manufacturing fault not an accident.
If it's an accident then yes they do replace but is with a refurbished phone.
Or if you pay a fee they replace but again with a refurbished one

This would happen with any phone. You dropped it on the corner and thats the weakest point due to it being the smallest are to spread the impact. Gorilla glass is scratch proof, not .... well ... this proof. Anyway try ringing Samsung and ask if there are any repair centres in your area. They can normally do it with-in a few days ( my Galaxy Nexus was done over night) just depends how fast they can get a screen.
I do feel for you :/

FYI. I got an ipad 2 replaced because of a dent which affected the volume button. I dropped it. The ipad 2 was free and I didn't have a receipt because of that. A Day or two after visiting the Apple store, I received a new one.
My brother also had his smashed iPhone replaced at no charge.
Now, depending on who you get at the genius bar, they may talk you into getting the Apple care plan before replacing your device. Sometimes they don't.
Apple covers accidental damage (twice) with their plus plan, which is$100, and it looks like now they charge $50 service fee. Well worth it for 2 years of assurance.

People don't seem to realize that this is a $700 piece of equipment, I always take care of my laptop, camera, etc., you can't go dropping electronics and be surprised if they break.

Cracked the glass in my s3: recommend some options?

I got my s3 in September and recently it fell out of my pocket (less than two feet from the ground) and the corner cracked all the way up the side. Right around where the back "button" is. It is hardly on the screen so its not really in the way, but its still very annoying to look at.
As I see it I have a few options
I can bring it into Telus and they can replace the entire screen which would cost me like $250 or so. Because I went to them and they said that they do not do glass only repairs.
I can try to replace the screen myself. I'm sure I would be able to do it, even though I have seen a few videos and it looks quite tedious and risky.
I could try calling Samsung and seeing if they would do anything about it. I have heard a story of someone calling and they did replace it. I imagine I would have to do some pouting and complain about how they said they're gorilla glass was phenomenal. Please let me know if this has worked for you.
And my last option would be leaving it the way it is and waiting for it to spread even more. (Not a fan of this one)
Also since I'm here, can anyone recommend a sturdy yet slim case for the s3? I'm not a huge fan of the otter box but I would like something fairly strong and not too expensive. Links would be great!
Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Well for that I'm sure they could say they never said it was shatter proof and it's still glass
I know, but a foot and a half? It should be able to withstand something so minor, this is "regular use". Maybe I should sue the company that makes my pants for having such tiny pockets.

I would be writing a nice polite letter to Samsung first a letter not email .

any insurance?

Drop anything made of glass onto a solid floor and there's an excellent chance it will break, especially on the corners. Good luck with getting it fixed but a £3 rubber boot from Amazon will protect all the corners but only add 2mm to the thickness.
