Galaxy s3 vs. Iphone 4s Drop Test - Galaxy S III General

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbL7ciKmT7g
In this video you can check out a test drop from the two of the best and famous smartphones in the world.
I love my galaxy s2 for everything that it has i think it's a perfect phone for me and i won't change it for a while.
it has enough power to play videos and the camera is also super b what else do you people want from a phone.
I have no idea why the samsung galaxy s3 is better in any way than the galaxy s2, i know i know quad core and the bigger display, yeah right.

damn that was quite embarrassing to have a iPhone beating it
Samsung get your act together NOW!!

what is going on here shouldn't gorilla glass 2 be more stable and strong than the original gorilla glass that my phone has ?

it's not made for crack resistant it's scratch resistant. GG2 is thinner so it cracks easier

That's a shame. I guess I'll keep my GS2 this year. It might not be the latest tech, but it's built like a tank. I'm guessing the square shape hugs the frame better than the s3 "pebble".

Why are people slamming Samsung?
The SIII have a much larger glass on the font than the iphone 4, so of course it will break more easily.
Gorilla glass is never designed to protect the phone from a fall, it is only hardened for scratch resistance.
If you want to protect your phone from a drop, get an Otterbox case.

People will complain about almost anything. Doesn't matter. Maybe the phone should be bullet proof. BOTH PHONES BROKE. SMH

I could care less about the iphone. The s2 survived nearly every drop on youtube while the s3 broke 4 with 6 phones on the two youtube vids I saw. For someone like me who hates cases and loves piece of mind it doesn't make much sense for me to upgrade. I've dropped my s2 on hard pavement twice, and other than a small chip on it's hump its still perfect.

Why would you want to spend £499 ($800) on a phone just to go and drop it and potentially ruin it? Where's the logic? Why can't you you just buy the phone and enjoy it? Don't go dropping the damn thing lol

Accident do happens. I dropped mine yesterday. Lucky I put a case on it
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA

people should remember that it's gorilla glass and not gorilla diamond/hardened granite/robocop/chuck norris - it's still glass.
Samsung did the best they can by providing a slightly hardened glass - The phone has been made extra slim and light and it isn't advertised to be destruction proof so one should know the weigh the potential risk involved in dropping it before buying it, and care for it as such.

Gorilla Glass my Donkey

I am now the proud owner of an epic with the bottom half of the glass cracked lookin like an ipod that fell on its face from 3 feet.
To be fair, I went almost 2 years without anything more than a random scratch on the glass, but still....gorilla glass was a major selling point for me and its useless.
Atleast its not cutting my fingers lol if I was blind I wouldn't know it was cracked so maybe it cracked from the inside out? Idk but its cracked and crack is whack.
Lol I bet I still gotta pay $100 to get a refurb even though I was lied to

It's Gorilla Glass because it's ultra-scratch resistant, not because it's unbreakable.
Even diamonds can be broken.
Think about it.

View it this way, how long do you think normal glass would have lasted you?
Dude don't tell me its not useful. Here's the story of my Epic 4G.
i have 3 scratches on screen barely visible, only can tell when you hold to the side. normal viewing; you cant see it. it had fell out of my pocket when i was taking out slid across concrete for about 3 feet and thats it.
I have a tiny dent on the bottom of my phone it happen when i got of my car and was walking to my door and all of suddenly it flew out of my hand and landed standing up on brick and bounced and slammed across the brick.
i have some scratches on the top left of the silverish part from falling down, sliding across any surface it touches.
This phone is durable regardless of this amazing Glass.
Try that on an iPhone! HAHA Good Luck, either that or any tft lcd screen.

Lol I'm not attacking the durability of the phone, I brag about it. My phone has been dropped and tossed so many times and I had at most a scratch on the "chrome" lawlawlawl. I just got so used to it that when it dropped on its face I casually picked it up and was horrified lol I'm not used to my epic getting hut its definitely time for a new one though. My speaker died about a week ago. I just don't want that cheap ass GS3 and the evo lte has problems....
And dude that questioned normal glass, my hero didn't have gorilla glass and I dropped it into the train tracks and when I got it up the only damage was the paint scratched off of the physical call button, but then again I was a lot more careful with it because it didn't have anything special lol

Gorilla glass was supposed to be scratch resistant, which means it was actually more brittle and easier to crack. It's not a miracle material, it has it's draw backs too

i got so baked one night i forgot to close my garage, didn't even remember driving home
when i woke up i realized i didn't have my phone either
outside the garage i found the phone leaning on a rock face down
apparently the phone was in my lap and flung out when i got out of the car.
thank you gorilla glass
no damage
lol thats why i was horrified to see it finally gave in, because it fell so many times face down (i even challenged my friend with his iphone 4 to a throw test to see if he really believed that iphones wont break, needless to say I tossed my phone to show him just how frail his iphone really is because he refused to throw it the way i did even though my phone walked away harmless)
i just thought gorilla glass was indestructible, prolly cuz i associated that with "scratch resistant" lolololol but uptill now i believed it lolol

I love my Epic's screen! It's been almost two years and there is no damage! I'm looking forward to the GSIII with Gorilla Glass 2!

Screen cracked!

So..I dropped my lovely new TMO sgs3 from about 10-12 inches onto a hard surface. The screen cracked in two places from the left to the right side. LCD is fine but glass is fully cracked. It seems that this is beyond unacceptable for "gorilla glass."
I called Tmobile customer service who were useless and suggested a pay $150 for an insurance replacement.
What should I do guys? Do I go to Samsung? The retailer (Walmart)?

How is it a defect, because you dropped your phone and the GLASS cracked? Bad luck? Yes. Defect? No. Even Gorilla Glass can crack. It is not invulnerable to damage resulting from drops. There is nobody to run to, as the damage is a result of your handling/mishandling of the device. There is nobody to foot that bill except for you. Sorry it happened, but that's just how it goes. Sometimes you can drop your phone and get lucky, and sometimes you drop it, and you aren't so lucky. It all depends on how it falls, and what it falls on.

He cant sell the phone because asurion will ask for the phone back. The only thing you can do is pay the deductible for a new phone. Even though its gorilla glass, once you drop it on that certain angle the screen will definitely crack.

If you used a credit card to purchase the phone and it provides warranty coverage you should check to see if accidental damage is covered. I know my card covers loss/damage for the 1st 90 days in addition to extending the normal warranty.
ETA: You can keep the phone and later see if you can purchase replacement glass. Sell it after fixing it.

He's right. It's common sense to know that the bigger the screen on the phone the more prone it will be to damage. Having a 4.8" screen is amazing but it also makes the phone very fragile. Gorilla Glass 2 to my understanding is basically there to protect the screen from light damage such as scratches/scuffs. Sadly you had a case of bad luck, dropped your phone, and the screen cracked.
There's nothing more to it than you need to be a little more careful next time with such an expensive device. Considering the phone outright sells for $600 I don't think $150 is that bad for a replacement. Good luck.
I agree with everybody on here and to be honest it was your fault. You should of gotten a case of some sort.
I hope you get your phone fixed/replaced.
it does seem this phone is more prone to screen damage than others before it to be honest.....I have personally seen my Samsung Fascinate and Charge take falls from several feet to concrete and spend all their time in a pocket with keys and get tossed around and never even suffered a scratch or crack.....and all that with no case or screen protector either.....

S3 back panel cheap!!!

MY galaxy s3 has got many scratches(blue). i use a back cover but still there are a lot of scratches... Samsung made s3 eco-friendly and because of this the back panel quality is very cheap and sensitive .. its so annoying...
And as such cheap to replace

if u r going to use a back cover that is going to scratch your phone, how is Samsung responsible for it? I have 0 scratches
Mine has a fair few scratches too, but I'm usually busy looking at the big bright screen to care about it

I like the fact that it uses cheap plastic. Because then, I'm not paying extra for a phone just because of something pointless like a glass back or unibody design. Phones aren't a fashion statement, and so function trumps form.

I think the S3 costs more to build than an iphone. Iphones are built in China using slave labour.
Anyway, an iphone back glass costs around $5 on eBay. The S3 back costs around $15 but it's the original one. Pretty good I say.

iPhones are indeed made in China but not by slave labors. The Workers who make iphones are decently paid for where they are living. Plus their food and shelter are all paid for. Oh, and no tax either. So in reality, the so called slaves probably got more left in their pocket than you. So dont spread flase information unless you have creditable source to back it up.

You obviously took my comment literally. I'm
to blame for that.
I was replying to a comment about Iphones costing more to make than the S3, which I'm pretty sure they are not. Many S3's are made in South Korea where labour costs are much higher than those in China. Apple, like most big companies chooses China because it's the cheapest and then they charge a mint for the phones.
Btw, there have also been alot of news reports about working conditions at Apples manufacturing plants (like Foxcon) over the last few years. Most has been negative (suicide rates, hard working conditions, hours). Maybe that has been false information as you say.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/may/30/foxconn-abuses-despite-apple-reforms
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Apple_Inc.
You asked for sources. Now I ask where is yours detailing the excellent conditions you talk about.
Anyway, maybe they are left with more in their pockets than you, but definitely not me.

The aluminium back won't reduce signal.. in the slightest.. All radio's these days function in 360 degrees, the back will cover a limited portion of the back only (the edges are still plastic to stick), i use them and the signal is COMPLETELY unaffected in the slightest.
You can tell me anything, but i have the cover and see no change myself.
Only thing that will actually break is NFC.
I remember my brother bought one and was wondering why his reception had dropped over the last few days. Suggested it was probably the metal back cover. Anyway, we tested for about an hour....taking it off then back on again. Everytime we put it on reception dropped instantly. We tested until we were 100% sure it was the cover.
But there must obviously be different ones out there as you say you haven't had any problems, which I don't doubt.

days after I got my S3, this lady cuts in front of me at airport and basically, knocks phone out of my hand onto the metal bench causing a nice scratch before i had even bought a case!!
that link looks good sxi200, cheap way to make it look perfect again.
My Business partner just got a new S3 and the back panel is different to my one,
its thicker and more sturdy but also a little yellow in colour, not as ice white as mine.
You wouldn't really notice it until you hold the two side by side.

The main advantage is that they can reduce the thickness of the glass while keeping the strength at least the same. This means screen closer to the surface so you get that "floating image" effect like on the One X and One (and to a slightly lesser extent the Nexus 4)

What we're talking about here is the gg2 or gg3 on the One. Not on gs3. Why would we even bother about gs3's screen here?

SGS3 uses GG2. So it's actually related. Anyways, GG3 should be stronger than GG2 while at same thickness but production will come later on the year. It was only announced a couple of days ago.

Note 3 Screen is basically indestructible from Phonearena

Check out these drop test done from PhoneArena...Post is old.. But new to if you haven't seen this yet.
What baffles me about this new glass as it seems to scratch very easily though in my opinion, already have some little scuff up marks from being in my pocket.

Nice
It's a good thing, too. Mine took a nasty spill and I just got some nicks on the front bezel. :good:
Though the iPhone 5S is not that bad still it'snote 3 we trust! Strong, beautiful, durable, functional, feature-packed, fun, more than a companion, affordable and above all, the hope to smart phone evolution especially the note series.

IN NOTE WE TRUST......lol yes indeed...I believe its one of the top out there, The NOTE 3 is a Beast...I've had every note versions, And galaxy s2 and s3...I love Samsung :sly:
The 5S is laughable at best. "In Note we Trust".; I dropped mine corner first. Pretty nasty fall and was expecting a shattered screen but ended up with a bent bezel and that's it.

and ......... the oleophobic coating wears off too.
I couldn't even think of using my $750 device without a screen protector. insane!
I got the 9H, it's like a second screen. I can take it off in two years and my flawless OE screen will command high $$$

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Seems like only yesterday, everyone blindly thought iPhone was the best thing since color screens. Now I think more and more people are realizing that premium materials do not always equal the highest durability. Note 3 FTW!!!!!
No I'm not happy to see you, it's just a Note 3 in my pocket....
I slipped in the snow and my note 3 went flying.Funny but it didn't break I thought for sure I'd have cracked screen, the back for scraps on it and the corner. But wow my heart stopped for a second

You know what..your exactly right.....So strange you say that..I Actually have a small section on my screen where it looks like a scuff mark..I took a magnifying glass and looked more closely and it looks like the coating is gone?? Wth lol...Called at&t and getting a replacement and ordered a tempered glass .3 thick one iff ebay..ordered 2 incase I mess it up..they were 15 a piece putting them my replacement phone soon as it arrives..
I'm glad that the phone is holding up pretty well in tests, but I'm still definitely not taking the risk of not having a case on it. My note 2 dropped from below pocket height onto asphalt for me, not even face first, and spiderwebbed completely, even taking away lots of touch sensitivity. Not risking that again!
Reminds me of the old yellow and black Nextel we used to dent the walls with to show how tough it was, One of the techs actually heaved it through 2 thickness of 5/8" sheet rock. The battery cover popped off and the battery fell out. But as John Cameron Swayze used to say, it kept on ticking.
Dropped mine one foot. Hairline crack. I am now a gorilla glass non-believer.

They could say the freakin screen is made of highly reflective aircraft aluminum. Don't make a difference to me! I'm still putting a case and screen protector on it! I'm using the moshi visor xt. It was what the att store had the morning it came out. It's a nice screen protector but it itself scratches and scuffs. However when the screen is on you can't see any of them. I love my big HD display! Until the time comes that the screens are indestructible I will be protecting mine!

I agree....Like I said above for some reason these screens scuff so easy it's almost like a coating comes off (happened to me) I ended up sending it back for another one and soon as it came I instantly threw on a Tempered Glass off ebay for 16 bucks....and put it on in a steamed room like they say...And sure enough its dust free..and the glass protector feels so smooth and no loss in touch responsiness even with spen, Good idea to grab a Tempered Glass protector...helps alot
I've broken both the Note 2 and Note 3! Guess I'm just unlucky.
