I hear all the talk about unlocked bootloaders which would allow us to install CM7 on our DX's. What exactly makes CM7 the clear and cut best ROM out for unlocked phones? Features? Speed? Battery Life?
I'm just curious, and I'm extremely excited.

Wow, that is awesome. I don't even really know what to expect out of this, but a DX with a unlocked bootloader has to be one of the best phones on the market right now, correct?
TBolt isn't worth upgrading to IMO. I'm waiting until August-December, and a unlocked DX makes the wait that much easier.

Yeah it will be a beast. I am already getting Quadrant scores ~2200 on a regular basis with Liberty 1.5/Stagefright, and I am willing to bet that, with custom kernels in the game now, we can get over 3000, as everything can be streamlined

That attitude leads me to believe he just wanted to get something started. Guess nobody will know for sure until thoroughly tested, but my hopes aren't too high. Thanks for the insight. I will try not to.. i really hope he doesn't. I can only hope for the best right now.
Great news! I can't wait to see this beast that is the DX unlocked.
I really hope developers take their time and release a solid ROM instead of rushing to it just for the sake of releasing the " first " unlocked ROM for bragging rights.
I hope there is nothing sacrificed as well. My biggest gripe is that of missing features for speed. I am willing to wait it out
My only question (and don't get me wrong, I'm excited our phones will be getting unlocked) is about re-locking our phones. If we have to return them for any kind of repair/replacement issue, and VZ sees the bootloader was unlocked, I have a feeling they would say we voided our warranties. Right now with the locked bootloader all we have to worry about is sbf'ing/madderstcok'ing our phones back to stock. Does anyone know if the unlocking process is going to have a re-locking process?

This process won't involve unlocking the bootloader, it'll consist of flashing an .sbf file using the current security keys which replaces stock recovery with clockworkmod and replaces the stock keys with our own keys. Then, we can create new kernels and roms that use our own keys. Thus, the security stays intact and we can still do whatever we want. Flashing back to stock will simply require flashing one of the leaked .sbf files (.340 for instance) that has been altered to include the new keys.
In short, we don't break down the door, we just change the lock so we can have access whenever we want.

Figured id start a thread about it and people can chime in on what they know and what they want to know. Id like for someone to provide a link to what the up coming features are going to be and when its going to be released. I heard that its going to come out on monday the 6th and some of the features might include some more lime green and a market with music that can be purchased and also some sort of supported video chat. Any truth to this would be cool but I can't confirm anything. I know verizon usually comes out with some kind of sheet to tell users what will be included and I haven't found it yet so if anyone has information that'd be nice to share with the people here on xda.

I highly doubt it will be out tomorrow. And even if it is out tomorrow, it will be on the Nexus one. You should know by now all the updates come out to the Nexus phones first. Obviously it might not be too long after that for us to get it but we've gotta wait for Google's star child first.

yeah plus MOTO will want to make some crappy build with "ninja blur" which will take forever since they only care about the droid x so we'll have to wait a while unless you're rooted. Ports of stock 2.3 should probably be out sometime in the few weeks after it is released for el nexus uno

So I'm going to make a guess that getting Gingerbread onto the Droid2 is going to require a new kernel? In and of itself, Gingerbread uses a newer kernel than Froyo, and it seems like there are some significant improvements under the hood that may require kernel support. I suppose this could be verified by comparing the source code between the two releases.
So, barring someone hacking eFuse, I would guess that we aren't going to see Froyo until Motorola decides to release it. Hopefully I'm wrong here...

I really don't think it'll take too long for Gingerbread to come out. We've been running 2.2 for a while now. Other phones don't even have Froyo yet. I know they probably have to make it Blur compatible, but I really don't think it'll take too long to get.

they havent posted in the bootloader thread in a couple of days, so i dont know whats going on. its killing me too.
i cant make heads or tales of what they have done as of yet, but i can say that it looks better for us now that they have a way to recover (the sbf) if they mess something up. a lot of things things they can try now that they may not have wanted to before, for fear of brick
Not really pessimistic, just neutral. We can make guesses but there is no way to be certain the loader will be broken or whether motorola will give up and unsign it. They have stated we will get 2.3 for sure, but 2.4 is a toss up still.

Who cares about 2.3? 2.4 is what everyone's after...
GPU-accelerated UI and Browser
Built-in Gtalk video chat support
Multi-language browser support
And as Matias Duarte implied, all the Honeycomb design changes will be in 2.4
So who cares about 2.3? Not me. If the Atrix isn't released unsigned in Canada, and unless the XDA hacks it, I will be going for the Nexus S, and sticking with the Nexus line for the next few years...
Hard to speak about 2.4, as we don't have much of a clue about it. But loading custom kernels and the like is really making me re-think the decision about buying the Atrix...
Not to be a downer in this thread, but I wouldn't hold your breath for the unlocked bootloader, but it is nice that some fresh minds are going at it.
With that said, the devs for the D2 and DX have been able to set the users up with a good amount of customization.

I don't see why so many are willing to put up with this. There are plenty of other good android phones out there. As long as Motorola is going to fight this, there will never be a truly safe way to flash custom roms/kernels on droid phones, and devs simply aren't going to invest the time necessary to develop much.

I loved my Droid X when I first got it. Rooted it and had leaked Froyo running on it before OTA was available. After that there was not much more I could do with it. Bought a used Captivate on ebay. There are lots of custom ROMs and kernels to choose from. When September rolls around I hope there is a new Samsung phone available. No more Moto's for me.

Galaxy S phones are very solid, with a few mods, it will fly. Plus the bootloader is unlocked, if u are coming from the x, you will greatly appreciate this. I just picked up a thunderbolt and so far, i love it. Its crazy fast, LTE or not, and having the 256mb of extra ram really makes for a phone that never slows down, no matter what you are doing. My only complaint other than the battery being undersized, as HTC ALWAYS does, is the adreno 205, people with the mytouch or G2 will tell you its good. When voming from a galaxy s the GPU is the only thing that i dont think is better.

First, this isn't a post about how to get root on 2.3. I know, at present, it is not possible. I know, I have tried pretty much every method imaginable
Anyway:
Where are we? I've heard rumors that S-off is coming from unreoked, alpharev x, team win will be coming "any day." Yeah, I'll believe it when I get it.
But, I think we are at the point where we are at HTC and Sprint's mercy. I mean, are we at the point where we are going to have to beg sprint and or HTC, to put S-OFF, or, somewhat more realistically, unlock the bootloader (or at least provide an RUU to downgrade?).
Anyway: Just discuss what you think about the plausibility of rooting the 2.3 release, and if we will ever see a free EVO. I am, sadly stuck on 2.3, as I didn't think about rooting, or know anything about it, until after I took the OTA .

I don't think we're stuck at Spint's/HTC's mercy. We're just further down the priority list of the devs. That's fine, its the nature of technology. As STG posted, Alpharev and unrevoked are posting something tonight. That could be a universal GB crack (hope!) or it could be a rooted 3d/Sensation. Either way, OG Evo is moving up on the priority list. Its an old phone, but hardly forgotten.

HTC isn't helping much either, though they say that they are going to. The've announced that they are going to start sending out updates with the new unlocked boot-loaders in August, and the Evo 3D is third on the list so it'll be out later in the year. I haven't read anything about them sending out an unlocked boot-loader for the Evo 4G.
As was previously stated, not forgotten, but no doubt far down on the list of priorities.

I still think it is obnoxious that Android phones (which ironically, is the "open" platform), have become more locked down. I am glad to see that HTC and other companies are starting to realize that this stuff is important. I think that it is at least a big step forward. I do believe HTC will follow through on their promise, at least for future phones. I don't think that they'd go back on their word. I'm just optimistic like that .

It's about friggin' time the VZW Xoom gets ICS considering the WiFi-only version has had it since January.
Nah, I told Matt and the rest to suck it the last time they asked. I didn't pay a premium to test their ****. I'm sick of the 'ship now, treat them like crap, patch later and watch them kiss our feet' attitude these companies seem to have. I let them deal with the Better Business Bureau and the FTC. I'll test stuff for developers here but VZW, Moto and Google just need to stay out of the way as far as the Xoom is concerned.

haha, everyone probably already rooted and installed it.
such a shame it took so long. and now JB is coming up soon. Imagine how long (if) it will take VZ users to get it. Glad i went with the wifi version.
Yeah but even with the custom ROMs, they're all based on Honeycomb telephony code and honeycomb proprietaries that are hacked together to work. When ICS was first released, I remember the devs having a hell of a time getting 3/4G working on the Xoom because of that.
So theoretically, a VZW Xoom ICS update should make the custom ROMs better as well because they'll be using proprietaries specifically for ICS, plus new radios are always good. I just hope it doesn't include a new bootloader. If it does, that makes going back to Honeycomb (if so desired) a pain in the ass.
Why wait?
On the bright side, once ICS officially rolls out, the good devs could integrate the new proprietaries into their custom roms.
If tougher bootloaders are really the case, why wait for a tougher bootloader? Save yours and jump onto a custom rom!
(Note, I am not responsible for any possible damage my suggestions may cause)

No it wouldn't be a "tougher" bootloader. The Xoom is a Google Experience Device. It will have an unlockable bootloader. The problem would come in for people who use SBF files and RSD Lite to flash back to stock. It has nothing to do with lockable/unlockable. The Xoom will have an unlockable bootloader for its entire lifecycle.
I have no doubt the reason for the delay is two fold: 1. VZW's henious testing procedures and 2. The Xoom isn't a priority device for them anymore.

I'm sorry about that. I shoulda given the pertinent info to someone like you, given Moto your MEID so that you could test it. The satisfaction of telling them to piss off was fleeting at best. Since I already kicked their butts through the proper channels, I should have at least let someone in this community get in. I just assumed they invited everyone who hadn't sued them yet. ;-)

Son I've been driving the bus to Hell since I was 15.
And now that I've had some more time to absorb this news, I'm now as happy as Jerry Sandusky at Chuck-E-Cheese.

Oh, I gotta hear this! ... So, the procedure of a single entity "kicking the butt" of several multibillion-dollar companies entails what, exactly?!

I can't say, exactly. Just know your rights as a consumer overall and in your state. There are proper channels and forms you can fill out and you usually get a response and some sort of resolution if you are somewhat creative or atleast patient. After the end of a conversation with Motorola Mobility's counsel, I can sheepishly admit that we've come to terms. I didn't get the meeting in Barcelona that I suggested (an inside joke for anyone who's seen an internal memo) but at least I'm back at zero which sadly counts as a victory (to me) against these guys.
I only had to have a couple of conversations with VZW's customer service to get them to be reasonable about the LTE business. I didn't bother with Google because I reached a fair solution with the other two offending parties. I'm not exactly sure what they could have for me anyway other than buy my Xoom back at a prorated price and get me out of my contract.
My penalty for jumping on new sexy hardware that was kind of a lopsided deal was having to research the process for filing small claims cases, consumer protection agencies, filing out forms and patiently explaining the actual issue and outlining what remedies you're hoping for to stranger after stranger. It helps if you're not trying to get a bunch of free stuff. Will I buy anything from VZW or Motorola again? Maybe, because they eventually came through for me but I hate paperwork so it's going to have be perfect out of the box or cheap.
