sprint and coverage? - EVO 4G General

[rant]
So I looked at sprints coverage map again, and noticed that same as before for me, they show I should have full bar 4G coverage on my 1 acre property. I don't get any 4G at all until I go down the street a couple hundred feet.
I called them tonight, finally pissed off about it, and the first guy told me tough sh!t, that coverage maps were a total guestimate and didn't matter. Finally ending up talking to this girl who actually helped me out. She told me I would need to go by a sprint repair shop, thankfully one is 2 mins down the road from where I work, and have them check it out, and if they say it is fine, or replace my phone, and I still cannot connect, they will see what can be done next.
Background.
At first they went to tell me about the 30 days and so forth. I pointed out how I broke a $300 ETF to move to sprint, and then paid another 200 for my phone, and another 120 for my bill, all within the first 30 days of start of service with sprint. I also pointed out that the moment I did that, I lost my unlimited data plan with AT&T.
So I have unrooted my phone, and I am sad cause my phone feels so lame running stock sense 2.2 when I had a awesome 2.3.2 CM7 and will be like that until I go by the sprint store tomorrow evening. So I am hoping they somehow make good on their end when I get back home, and still get no 4G coverage, just like the other 4 evos that have been at my house my friends have get no coverage.
anyone else have issues like this? I was really just ranting cause I want to either have 4G or a carrier that I actually get 4G with at my house, when they say I will.
[/rant]

You ever look at clears maps? They're a lot more detailed.

they were different about a month ago, checked last night and they match to a T for where I live.

you're not going to get sympathy...err...just leave sprint and get a thunderbolt. 4G with sprint sucks anyways. I get faster 3G most of the time.

i am on the phone with sprint right now trying to terminate my contract without an ETF since I was lied to about coverage. They are sending me to "account services" right now to talk about it. I have been lied to and run in circles so many times trying to fix this issue. It is making me so mad.
doesn't help I haven't slept in like 30 hours lol.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes. I'm trying to figure out why coverage sucks so much at my house, despite both Clear and Sprint's 4g coverage maps claiming I should have good coverage.
Cheers

well I ended up going way up sprint somehow. And eventually I talked to some manager who started cursing me out and calling me names and lying to my face. He said the only reason I have connection problems at my house was because I don't turn my phone off for extended periods of time during the day. lol... Needless to say I had his manager listen to that call and next thing I know I have no ETF, a sprint EVO 4G to sell, and an HTC thunderbolt that is so fast it isn't funny.

Congrats-what's the speed tests showing so far on average?

How to Score a Free Airave from Sprint!

Okay, just just get something out of the way here: Only try to get one of these if your service is really bad at house/office.
1: Make sure you actually have dropped calls. Ours were over 5% which is considered really bad, I guess.
2: Call tech support, wait to get connected, then act dumb an say that you've already been through the tech support stuff and you've been talking to a person in retentions for the past half-hour. They'll say well how'd you get to me? Just say that the guy in retentions said that he was putting you on hold to check into getting you a free airave; you've already been through troubleshooting with him.
3: The person in tech support will transfer you back to somebody in retentions and bring them up to where you're at.
4: Tell the person in retentions should go ahead and start the order and then you're set.
5: Is optional. You can have your call drop them, then they'll call you back and you can make a joke about how crappy the service is. (Actually happened to me)
I took the long way through this today, but started in retentions, got tranfs to tech support after checking the drop call rate and doing some basic troubleshooting, then told the guy in TS that I'd been through it all the last last guy in Relations was checking into a free airave for me, but somehow got transfered to him, ect.
I also started out by telling the first guy in retentions that I'd taken 2 phones to the corp store, they had done some PR update (act stupid about it) and now those two phones always have some ^ above the bars at the office, but the service works great and the data speeds can actually load a website in under 3 minuets. The data service at our office has been 0.02 kbps for over a month now, which is why I did the PRL hack in the first place on the two office phones 2 weeks back.
Anyhow, it's on it's way and didn't take that long.
They do check your area and if they feel you are in a good signal area they will not give it to you for free. I only say this because when I called he told me as long as my area qualifies for free airave service he will be able to do it if not I have the option to purchase one. Luckily after he checked the computer he said "great news u qualify". so this will not work for everyone, and it does connect to gps and reports where the device is connected. So good luck, im sure sprint gonna get stormed with calls and eventually they will catch on.

Don't think so cuz you gotta talk to the retentions department...i hate talking to them too cuz of those damn scripts they follow, it's like talking to human robots!
Also should mention don't get caught in a lie about talking to them cuz they do have a record of when you call and what department you talked to. So I'm sure if they know you lied they probably will give you a hard time and might make a note on your account that you lied and who knows they might be reluctant to go out of their way for you in the future, I know I wouldnt want to help a liar. So what if you have to be on the phone with them for awhile your getting something for free if your lucky so not really a reason to *****....
The guys I got didn't talk like robots for once, and they were probably from America. I was surprised. They also seemed quite personable.

Yea you can get lucky once in a while...i had a girl from canada one time and we must of had 30 minute conversation after she was done with my issue. It was like we were friends just talking about anything! Was hoping she was local to me I was gonna ask her if she wanted to meet for lunch or something....i kinda wondered since she had my info if she looked up my facebook to see who she was talking to....

Haha, That would be funny. Ask a CSR out on a date, then get married down the road. That would be better than a myspace marriage.
Got one quickly
In our condo, my girlfriend's BB Curve and my Evo averaged 1 bar. While online checking our account, I decided to just email sprint and ask for an airave. Went to "contact us", left a messege and the next day we got a call from customer service, 10 minutes latter we were approved, two days latter got it in the mail, hooked it up last night, and now we are at five bars each. I am not saying it will be that easy for everyone, but for once in my life it was!
Very interesting, was thinking of trying this but figure I got no use for the Airave for now...
I get average -104 to -118 dbs which I heard -120 is no service. This is at my house. I get data roaming message and dropped calls. Went into Sprint and said I couldn't get one for free or heard of giving them out for free. Sucks I don't have internet to use it even if I did call and got one. Do you have to pay the 4 bucks a month for it or is that waived. Waived or not id use it.. just no internet.

If you got it from retentions it is free and the monthly fee is waived. When you go to your account and it lists your devices, it should say retentions next to the Airave.
So if a person were to have terrible 3G speeds they still wouldn't help? My reception is weird, no dropped calls or anything but my reception can shoot up from two bars to four, or six. But my 3G is ALWAYS bad in the town I'm in. Any ideas?

Yeah they don't help you at the store. They just told me they will try to update my phone for tower pulling. Said I already updated the radio to the latest and did the prl update. He said oh well I can't help you then. Wish I had the internet her is call about how bad my reception is and dropped calls. What irritated me the most is txt not going through. Is txt sent by the data service? If I turned data off will I send and receive sms still?
The guy told me it might be the material my house was built with causing the bad signal. If I go out the best reception I get is -100

Awesome tip, thanks again!

Experiences with Evo/Sprint?

I've been getting fed up with T-Mobile lately, the coverage at my house is limited, if not non-existent.
I was wondering if anyone would care to share their experiences with Sprint's network (4g speeds/coverage, reliability, etc). Also, experiences with the Evo itself (battery life, durabilty, accessory quality/quantity, etc)
I'm currently using a Nexus One, if that makes a difference.
Thanks!
Seems like your biggest issue is your coverage at your house. Best advice I can give you is go get an EVO, go home, check to see if you have good signal and 4G.
U can download map viewer from the market check the Sprint 4g coverage
And as for battery life it was not until I rooted that I felt I was getting the most out of it my battery life dramatically changed
And I've had nothing but a good experience I came from a moment so honestly tht was not the best Android experience so this phone have to say im really surprised by this device and what it can do if u have played around with one it really is not the same as owning it and since Sprint has the 3o day money back guarantee u should defin try itout and see if its for u

Punctuation is so overrated these days.
You will love an Evo, Sprint is a great company and the customer service has come a long way.
Try it for 30 days free, if not satisfied then return it, (yes you can root it and still return it)

Sprint actually has pretty good coverage in the San Francisco area. It's really hard to build new towers there nowadays so younger networks (T-Mobile) or older networks that are now overloaded (AT&T) have a really tough time working well there.
I suggest you take advantage of Sprint's 30-day unconditional return policy and test drive the EVO 4G for a few weeks. If you don't like it, or it doesn't work well for you, you can return the device and pay nothing (no restock fee or prorated usage fee, or anything).
Reiterating what others have said, signal in your home/area is going to vary, and your best bet is to try it out.
Sometimes while you are in the 30 day window, if you try to cancel due to lack of signal in your home the store will offer the signal booster thingy (I can't remember the name) and wave the monthly fee. It connects to your router and essentially gives you a tower in your home over the internet.
As for the EVO, I've had a Hero and a T-Mobile G1, and I love the EVO. It does everything I want, and then some. Rooting is key though, and I think the best battery life comes from the custom roms on these forums.
Give it a go for 30 days without canceling your T-Mobile phone. At the worst, you'll pay for a month of service on both lines. Once you test it out though and determine Sprint is the way to go, you can transfer your number from T-Mobile.
Oh, and 4G sucks the battery from your phone, so it's really rather useless in my opinion, unless you're tethering and plugged in, otherwise it's as good as a cable connection.

This map is crap. The map indicates that I have excellent coverage at home and work and is not so. Do what tgruendler said. Get the phone, take it home and test it and see what you think.
When I first got my Evo a lot of people I knew were saying "it's a nice phone and all, but you had to go to SPRINT?"
Now the Evo also marks my maiden voyage with Sprint, so I don't know the history that may have gotten them this bad rep ... but I have to say I've been nothing but pleased. I bought my phone a mere 2 weeks before my road trip across 4 states in 3 weeks (started in Georgia and ended up in Washington DC). During the ENTIRE road trip I had signal. Now I didn't call people, but I did use google maps and Nav and I maintained data the entire time (some minor blackouts in Mentone Alabama looking for an old friend's wedding ... but if you saw where I was you'd completely understand too ... and GMaps still got me there fine).
So while during this trip I saw 4G go up and down ... I will say their data was consistent. I uploaded photos to facebook nightly, took pictures all day, and even occasionally handed the phone to the kids to stream you tube videos (OK I had to plug in for that ... phone can't handle 4-6 hours straight youtube).
My only complaint with this phone while on 2.1 an touring ... was that 4G would destroy my phone (only when connected ... 4G seemed to idle fine in areas with no coverage). By destroy i mean that doing the same heavy uploading of images would kill the phone in about 4 hours.
Now back in the home land of LA ... vacation is over and I'm making more calls than you tube videos. In this case it's more of a Sprint vs ATT conversation (my old provider) and I have to say: Sprints coverage blows away ATT in all areas here. I consult .... meaning i travel all corners of the southland. While Sprint may have bad signal reception occasionally ... it _never_ disconnects. In contrast my ATT signal was always clear .... when it bothered to connect and would disconnect _constantly_ even when driving down major highways. So I like the Sprint service much better.
My Phone has "evolved" with me which is huge. 4G is now here where I live ... but I've also learned to root and tweak my EVO ... and I leave 4G on all day now and can make it from wake up to home with the wife and kids on one charge without having to plug in (I do tend to car charge every so often if i know I'm going to be on a long conference call or can't resist flashing a new ROM during my lunch break ... but that's not suprising). Between 2.2 improvements and wonderful after market ROMs and tweaks, the EVO isn't nearly as bad of a battery vacuum as it was when I first got it so it's to the point that I just leave all the features enabled (except wifi ... i don't see a point when 4g is faster than _any_ free wifi spot that is always over congested).
The ONLY thing I really don't like about Sprint is that i don't get voice and data at the same time. 4G fixes that (another reason i leave it on all the time)... but it's coverage is honestly spotty ... unlike Sprint 3G this one really is location sensitive.
The phone itself ... is awesome. I just can't complain as it still feels cutting edge after 6 months of having it (or is it 7 now ... i forget).
Summary: the battery used to be BAD with 4g turned on. 2.2 improvements and a good community changed all of that... and the phone is flexible and powerful enough that I don't care what's been released sense. I would love a longer battery life (who wouldn't), but considering I basically have a PC in my Pocket I'm OK with that trade off.
EDIT: one other negative I should note: I noticed with the stock HTC ROM having 4G turned on would occasionally make the whole phone stutter and lag, even when doing trivial things like scrolling between home screens. It would actually made the phone feel slower with 4g turned on if i wasn't directly doing a data intesive task. Custom ROMs _completely_ solved that problem. For the record i currently use Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS4 on the HTC17 kernel with the battery tweak, and all sense ripped out I could get away with (rosie pulled out compeltely, gingerbread keyboard, etc), and those stutters are a thing of the past.
Fantastic phone! Great network. Sprint is working hard to improve the quality of their customer service and doing a good job. They have already rolled out WiMax, so if you are in a coverage area you should be getting some pretty snappy speeds there. I also like the fact that Sprint isn't afraid to look at other technologies. I read an article the other day indicating that Sprint will probably begin developing an LTE network to work alongside the WiMax. All things considered, I would definitely recommend the Evo and Sprint

Not having a signal at home isn't an issue if you're with Sprint. When my wife and I moved into our new house back in May, we found out a little too late that our house was in a dead zone and there was absolutely no signal inside on any carrier. We had to step outside to make a call or send a text. After a couple months, I called Sprint and told them what was up. Without question, they offered me a free Airave. No equipment cost, no monthly charges. All they asked was that I send it back to them if I ever leave Sprint in the future. We both get full signal in every room of the house now.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised. I didn't have to beg, argue, or demand anything. As soon as I told them what was up, the dude just asked if it would be okay if they sent me one for free. Uh... yeah, that's okay with me! lol
I'm in an area far from 4G coverage (Southern Illinois) but after 10 years with Sprint I've been nothing but pleased. I've gotten free upgrades, free features, and all sorts of perks from some very helpful customer service people. On top of that I've never had a billing issue (unlike nearly everyone else I know on a certain other network). The only issue I have is I don't particularly care for their website, but that's just me.
As for the EVO, I upgrade from the Hero two weeks ago and I LOVE it. I definitely don't regret getting it.
Oh, another thing I like about Sprint: When I call customer service, 9 times out of 10 I'm connected to somebody in CONUS and not someone with English as a 3rd language. lol

insanely bad service?

I've been having INSANELY bad service lately and I get mixed responses from people I know around here with sprint. I've experienced it on the EF02 modem, DK28, EC05, and am currently on EB13. This crap has been going on for about a week now. Anyone else experience this?
I'm running syndicate 1.2 right now.
Wait a few more days. They might be upgrading the local speed.
any way to know for sure? wouldnt they send out a notice letting customers know?

Two possibilities. One, the network is having severe issue. Two, your radios gone bad (which yes, it does happen). Either way, go to a sprint store that has service and repair. (a coporate one). They'll do a PoST test on your phone to check your radio. If it's bad, you'll get a replacement. If it's not, they'll check the towers in your area and possibly submit a network ticket. If that's the case then it's a waiting game.

My signal has been actin funky, 4 bars to 1X to 3 bars to no bars standing in the same spot. Data speeds seem to be slower too. Sprint doesn't care that your device is rooted. It does not void your TEP. If an associate tells you otherwise, they're wrong.

You are lucky, I've been able to send about 5 text messages today, and I'm a heavy texter. I've been trying for about an hour to send this last one. I have been getting sms fails like this on and off for almost a week. Calling is pretty hit or miss too sometimes.
I usually have about 2-4 bars, occasionally I get the 1X symbol.

I have been having erratic issues with text in MA i chalked up to network issues. I am a very heavy user of text lol I out text my 25 year old son LOL! Been with Sprint 4 months now and I average just shy of 1500 a month thank god for unlimited txt and now that football is here it is going to get a lot worst LOL
ive been through 5 epics the last month. literally. 3 from assurion and 2 from sprint. sprint finally gave me an airave which only helped inside my house. everyone else around me with any htc phone has no issues. there is something seriously wrong with the samsung hardware. the nexus s also has the same issues.
piss poor quality on samsungs part is to blame. the evo gets 9mb down on 4g im lucky to connect. 3g is a joke. and making a phone call outside my house requires me to walk down the street.
i live 10 minutes from sprints headquarters...

Quality comes in many forms my friend. For instance, we're not the ones with a manufacturer recognized charging port soldering durability issue. Or hardware revisions to get the display ribbon cable to last.
"but it's made with plastic! And mine's made with aluminum!"

there are a few designs flaws with the charging port.
still, the epic should be classified as a rpos.
i still have the sero plan but verizon is looking really nice for twice the money.
sprint sucks simple as that.
i live 10 minutes from headquaters
so do i have any chance unlocking this pos and getting better productivity?

why would you keep getting the same phone if you have that big of a problem with it, the evo is cheaper now you know...
Also, i don't know if it matters, but when i flash a new modem, it usually fails the first time and passes the second time. I can also make and receive calls with more reliability than sms. seems like i just can't send a text with any reliability whatsoever.

Read -> Sprint changing a few things... again.

Getting rid of the "premier customer", returns go from 30 to 14 days, upgrade moves from 22 to 20 months BUT upgrade fee goes from 18 to 36..... all these changes are probly because of the new iphone too.... f*ck sprint and the rest of em.

i like sprint (for now), dont get me wrong. but they are slowly hiking prices and axing services. they just got rid of unlimited 4g hotspot.... i think its only a matter of time before unlimited data is a thing of the past.

I'm not too sure about that. Mainly because every commercial i see for them is the
"We are sprint, we are truly unlimited" IMHO that's the only thing sprint has going for them, until the new iPhone comes out.
Sprint is still better than the alternatives though. Good customer service, awesome phones, etc. Everyone else has already done all this junk and gone to tiered plans so I'm happy that Sprint has kept their service as is for so long

I agree, if you find a better service at Sprint's prices, let me know, I'll be upgrading soon.

Is there really anyone that uses unlimited hotspot? I can't honestly imagine someone just tethering their laptop, gaming device, ect with their phone ALL day. The only thing that bothers me with the premier loss is return policy.
It is bs. I signed up for unlimited. I should get unlimited. If I spend anymore I might as well just get internet in my house instead of phone. What is this power trip all the carrier's seem to be on? The power to giveth, the power to take away? The power to cancel my service is what they'll get. I don't understand why sprint would make a move for the iphone and sacrifice the biggest advantage that no other carrier provides. That in my mind would be the gold mine and I would squat on it. Unless they are all acting together to gain greater profit from the consumer because they are all not happy with the percentages, it makes no sense. It does make sense however that they would all drop like dominos to the power of apple. After all, they have as much money saved up as our entire government. Tell me that isn't f'd up. Tell me a company like that can't do whatever they want and manipulate the system. I'm sure if we new everything we would pull out our guns to stop it. Die for it. But, who will ever know. Our worst enemy will be loved like family due to secrets and manipulation as we all suffer unrecognized poverty and enslavement. But, we are many.... and the day will come.

wow! one year with sprint! :)

so I log in to check my bill at sprint.com, wanted to browse as i am looking for another phone to play with.. LOl
it's been a year, got my deposit back! wahoot!
seeing a little credit in there is nice, I have to say form all the stories i have heard about sprint being on these boards for almost a year, I have had a pleasurable experience with them, the financing department is first class, had some billing issues with them and they were as pleasant as can be. I do feel their service can be better in their stores, as My trusty evo's charging port let go back in november, and i had some rough spots tryin to get sprint to help me, so i went to htc and they resolved my issue no problems, so in a nutshell i am a happy customer!
now, do i want a design4g, epic4g touch, or photon4g? LOL
Totally agree with you. I have had a very pleasant experience with Sprint as well. Had a couple small billing issues that were fixed very quickly and drop less calls now than with Verizon. I used Verizon for 9 years but the cost was getting out of control. So far over the last 20 months, I have saved $2256 by switching. Total win
Sprint is great for the price. Just wait til network vision rolls out and coverage increases.

hah +1 for sprint gotta admit cept i just moved and i have ZERO coverage
note its northern wisconsin so i shouldnt expect to much i wish my evo had a unlocked sim slot i'd just grab a voice plan from att (closest tower is across the bay and its att of course)

I have been itching for the epic touch 4g....
Grats! I remember when I got my deposit back...was stoked to have 2 free months of service basically. As far as upgrading your phone I would hold off on that. I just recently purchased the EVO 4G because I really wasn't too impressed with the newer phones. Granted they are better than the EVO but just slightly which to me isn't worth either the upgrade credit or the extra cash. Wait for some more ICS phones and then upgrade....i'm betting Samsung and HTC will come out with something great.

right outside of bayfield wisconson hmmm hour east of superior beaaaautiful up here and no computer repair business so here i am

Brad, I would wait until MWC. I am having the same debate, I am going to wait for my 2 years to officially upgrade but if I get the chance to try a different handset I will. My wife needs a replacement EVO but I am kind of hoping they wont have one and we will have to get something else... we will see. But HTC is going to be launching something BIG this year!
I'm waiting it out too. Galaxy Nexus, sure it has LTE but it is last year's technology. I have very high hopes for MWC and shall be revealed there.
Out of Design, Photon, or Epic Touch?
Design has basically no development community. Smaller screen, and single core just doesn't cut it for me.
Photon has Motoblur and it is a worldphone, if you're into that kind of thing. It has a small but quality development community, jokersax has put out some good stuff for them. Unlocking the bootloader borks 4G. You can relock to fix 4G, and you can't relock with custom kernels.
Epic Touch used to have Loss of Signal, which was an absolute pain. It is pretty much gone now. Took a while to get AOSP on it, but they have accomplished. They have the strongest development community out of the three. I think it is BML but I'm not sure. If it is, hopefully they will be able to convert it to MTD sometime in the near future.
OR wait
i can never wait for my upgrade i have about 4 months til my contract is up ... sadly i maybe switching to the evil empire (at&t) :/
thanks guys! think im gonna wait, love my evo to death, and i just got a kindle fire so i got a new device to hold me over haha!
you guys are the best

Hahaha I know that feeling all too well. I dropped my LG Optimus S a few months back and the screen just stopped working and I remember hoping I wouldn't be able to fix it so that I would be forced to get a new phone
I was a year and 6 months with sprint when they cancel my contact, for data usage when I was on unlimited data plan. Don't be, glad be sad haa ha

Have you considered calling them and letting them know that you have no service at your house. I was having the same problem as I live in a small town in southern california and they sent me a free airave. Granted its not the best solution in the world but it will provide you with coverage in your home as long as you have high speed internet.
I've had a few minor ups and down with Sprint as far as billing went, but next to nil issues with repairs or phone service. I wish it was my first year again. I've been with Sprint for close to a decade now.
As far as a new phone goes, I'm with one of the previous posters. There's yet to been a phone released that has made me want to make the switch. Especially due to many of the awesome ROMS that been developed for our phones in the past year or so. In some cases, it's literally like having a new phone every few months. lol

yes i have considered that but atm with google voice intergration i can still text fine over wifi so im content on waiting a little til i have more concrete plans and my internets its through phone company (it was through my cable in my previous town so i just hooked up a land line and/or use skype) thanks for the suggestion.
and my ex got the airave since it was tied to her plan damnit
I've been with Sprint since '99... And I've definitely had my ups and downs. Overall I'm very happy with my plan, unlimited, my Airave at no charge to boost signal at the house and my E4G that has a very mature development community... But I'm really hoping to see some quad core hotness released in the next few months...
