[Q] Best way to remove sprint bloatware after root - EVO 4G General

Trying to help out a friend with an EVO... TIA

Install custom rom?

I used Absolute System Root Tools. Ive removed everything that I dont use that came on the phone. Works great. Can also flash boot screens and flash your system font. Note: The phone MUST be rooted to remove system apps.

I use 'root manager', it allows you to make backups and remove and restore any system apps

Titanium backup. Also, a lot of custom ROMs come with a lot of crap removed.

Also, why when I'm trying to remove Samsung Crap from our phones with Root Explorer, it comes back?
Then how do we get a recovery on it?
Doesn't seem to come back with Root Manager, so use that instead.

I've rooted and am running Titanium Backup. Can someone please give me a short run down of how to delete bloatware apps using this utility? I looked through the menus, but nothing was obvious to me. Definitely still new to this system, so I'd rather not just start pushing buttons!

You know I use to have a Behold II with T-Mobile. I would always use the custom roms from BH_Man. And there was never no recovery Nandroid or recovery with it like on the HTC Hero. You also have to use something called ODIN to install your roms. Go into a download mode and install from your PC. There was no way of installing off a SD card like we are use to from RA Recovery. Unless things have changes please correct me. Just my expierence with Samsung custom roms.

[Q] Help to restore stock YouTube app?

I had a friend of mine help me install the new YouTube app on my Mesmerize. I want to do a full restore but since I have the new YouTube in the /system/app/ directory when I do a restore it's going to have the new version.
I'm very new to Android. I'm used to using RUU files to flash my old Windows Mobile phone. I have ADB but I'm extremely limited on how to use it. My phone is rooted using Z4root.
Please help! I'll be doing a full system backup when I finally get back to stock. A Stock RUU for this phone would be amazing! LOL
If this were the mesmerize forum I'd say get your hands on a stock rom, and copy the youtube .apk (and probably the .odex from it) to /system/app. If it weren't a system app I'd say outright delete it (with titanium) and reinstall from market.
Not trying to be a jerk, but let this be a lesson to others. Always backup your phone (preferably with CW recovery through Rom Manager) BEFORE you make _any_ changes to your phone that you don't know how to undo. You will thank yourself later!
I have zero awareness of what is available for fixing mesmerize phones.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.
Oh, you're not being a jerk at all. I've learned a good lesson and was saved by someone who posted an Odin restore for this phone. So now I'm back up and running stock again. I'm new to Android so I had no idea that changing a system app would effect the system restore. Now I know!

couple of questions about rooting.

To start of, i will be using superoneclick, since it seems to be fairly easy. Now saying that i use that, nothing from my phone will get swiped correct? Apps, data etc..
Now once i do that, i will still have the current os that my phone is running now before the root?
once its rooted will i be able to port whatever app i want over to my SD?
also can i rune themes with out a rom?
thank you in advanced.
1) Correct
2) Yes
3) If your app supports installing to SD you will yes
4) You can't run anything without a ROM
Source --> http://is.gd/yHp7vX
Just rooting wont give you much. I would recommend Rom Manager so you can flash a new recovery for backups and mods.
Most stock roms don't support themeing or a high level of customization. I don't even know if SetCpu will do anything on a stock rom.
Basically I root to install Rom Manager from the market to install clockwork recovery.
A custom recovery allows flashing updated stock apps, themes, custom roms, keyboards, etc.
I suggest a CM7 gingerbread rom and you'll be hooked.

Ok sounds like a plan, yea i am trying to learn the processes ive seen a few videos and seen how they did it. Using superoneclick and any other type of method to actually root the phone wont really be any difference right? No one root is better then another? at the end they will still end up doing the same thing?
Also when i do a backup what is that for? once i install the roms will i be able to recover the apps i had before? or is that for security reasons that you do a backup.
Sorry for such the noob questions.

'Nandroid' Backup is a snapshot image of your ROM as it is at the time. Make sure you do one before flashing a custom ROM so that you can easily return to stock if you ever wish to. Once on a custom ROM your apps will show in the Market under 'my apps' and should sync to your phone.

Better to be safe than sorry
also, keep in mind nandroid is part of amon recovery. its a common misconception its a app itself.

[Q] Delete Stock Bloatware

I'm new to the Glacier scene. And I've read through some of the rooting threads. It looks like they're a couple of different methods for rooting the Glacier, although it looks like some people with newer devices seem to have problems with a couple of the methods.
All I'd like to do is delete some of the stock bloatware. Do I need S-Off to accomplish this on the 4G? What would be the easiest way to approach this? At this point I don't see the need for an OC, or a custom rom, etc... I know before root/S-OFF was obtained on the G2 that people figured out how to go in and disable the stock apps. Is there a way to do this on the 4G?
You'll need root access to delete the bloatware, but it's relatively easy. You can use grankin's s=off root script visionary method (which can easy be reverted with the PD15IMG.zip file) in the resource bible and then delete what you don't want. I've deleted a massive amount of apps, more than any guide I've seen, with no side effects. The positive of rooting the phone is that you can install CW recovery and backup your phone before making changes, so even if you delete something important you can restore and not lose data.
Thanks! I know that someone (cyan?) used to publish a list of applications that were safe to remove. If I remember correctly it was a list of applications and all of their dependencies. Is there anything like this for the 4G?
I just google searched at first, found one on androidforums. Then I just got experimental and started deleting anything I didn't use. As long as you keep that backup it takes about 5 minutes to get yourself back to a working state after making a mistake. I never did, kept it simple and only deleted things I recognized and had a market replacement for or never opened.

Cool that works for me!
Correct me if I'm wrong (of course you will), but simply rooting the phone and deleting the apps doesn't actually do anything. Its more of hiding the app from the menu. To truly get rid of the bloatware, you need to install another ROM.
I've rooted the phone once, deleted apps, unrooted and sure enough those apps were back.

You are correct. if you do not turn s=off you are only hiding those applications v. deleting from the memory bank of the phone. If you turn s=off you can truly delete them w/o worrying about them returning.

I believe that, that's what happens when you attempt to delete apps with S-ON; they'll 're appear' after a reboot.
You need S-OFF for true write access. You don't need a custom rom to delete apps with S-OFF, because you've got true access to your device. You can delete whatever you want with S-OFF. That's my understanding anyway.
once you root your phone, you can uninstall all the bloatware you want with titanium backup

[Q] How to choose which Root? Need Simple & Uninstallable

I just got an Epic 4g, it has Froyo.EC05, Firmware 2.2.1, Kernel: 2.6.32.9, Hardware v.D700.0.5
I don't want to put a rom on my phone. I just want to have root access so I can uninstall some of the stock apps, I REALLY want the wifi hotspot and I need the ability to set it back to it's stock again easy enough. I have a pc with Win7 Ultimate 64-bit and the drivers already installed and running ok. I just need to know which root program is best for a simple setup like I want and gives me just the wifi hotspot and stock app remover.
Thanks.
~Z
Use One-Click-Root CWM 3.0.2.5 to root your phone.
Use Titanium backup from the market to uninstall the bloatware
Some bloatware cannot be uninstalled, search around and find out what can and cant be uninstalled.
Then you are done.
If you ever need to send your phone back to sprint, Use the program ODIN to return your phone to stock.
It's that simple, but not that simple. Watch the video. It'll make waaay more sense.

Root your phone and download WiFi tether. They took it off the market, but I am sure it is posted on XDA.
Just for knowing, if I want to remove the root CWM and set it back to the way it was stock, what do I do? What program do I run and will it wipe out all my installed apps/data? or will it just set the settings back to normal?

Thx for the info on the tether, I'll try it. But if I wanted to un-root the phone and go back to how it was stock, how do I unroot it? Is the Odin thingy the only way to go back? I heard that Odin wipes everything out. Is there a simple way to undo the root CWM program w/out wiping out everything?

In my signature, click the Stock Rom link, in the first post is a CWM flashable zip for the stock samsung recovery and the stock rom. You'd have to root, make a nandroid backup in cwm, then when you need to unroot, wipe data/cache 3x and flash the ReRFS rom, let that boot, then go back to cwm, restore the backup, then reboot. Go back to cwm and flash the samsung stock recovery. But, you'd only *need* to unroot if you have to take it back to sprint.

Thanks xanderman, but I hate to sound like a noob, but I'm a windows/pc guy...I've had a windows phone since the early ipaq's, when the phone and the pim were separate devices... all i've had since then is Windows phones too, up to my Tilt 2, which I just traded in for my Epic 4G. So all this root/linux sounding Android stuff is VERY new to me and I have NO IDEA what you just said in your wonderful instructions up there about how to unroot my phone. I've noticed that a few apps don't seem to like the fact that my phone is rooted. And the only reason I did it was to have the ability to do Wifi Hotspot and for being able to have more apps installed on my sd card rather than the phone memory, although that was before I knew that Android phones have dedicated memory for apps, unlike Windows phones which shared memory between the app storage and app running. So if I had a ton of apps installed, the phone would crawl... same for too many txt msgs... but with the Android system, that's not a problem...

If you can figure out the above, you might just need to odin to stock. Basically CWM(ClockworkMod) is a custom recovery mode that let's rooted users flash new roms/themes/etc to the phone. Basically, you hold Volume up/down, camera and power buttons, wipe data in clockworkmod 3 times, then choose the "install zip from /sdcard" option, find the stock rom I mentioned(the one in my signature) and install it. Then reboot, wait 5 minutes. Go back to ClockWorkMod, and then advanced restore the data section of your backup(always make a "nandroid" backup before flasing your first anything), install the Stock Samsung Recovery(the only reason for this step would be if you have to return it for whatever reason), and you'll have an unrooted epic 4g.

You can always.use gingerbreak to root your phone. If your not worried about roms then u don't need a custom recovery. Using gingerbreak will just give u root and that is what u want.

Ummm...
So this is just my two cents here, but...everyone here is recommending the experimental version of wifi tether. Which I disagree with. Its easier to just go to the market and search "wireless tether".
"But squshy! Wireless tether doesn't do infrastructure mode! It only does ad hoc!"
I know. But ALL the OP wants to do is tether to his laptop. In which case, the market wireless tether will work perfectly. You don't even have to worry about using special steps to get it to tether 4g.
Plus, the experimental wifi tether is...buggy. I would think that a simple user such as yourself would rather have a stable reliable program over one that frequently reboots itself. (And ad hoc really isn't that bad guys. Its not like the guy wants to tether his xbox360 like everyone else here )

Ok, so I know how to get into the CWM. I get the wipe data 3 times, although I don't understand why you have to do it 3 times...I get the next step, although I don't know what it's installing from the sd card. Also, will running Odin wipe out all my data/apps? What's a "nandroid" backup? I used Titanium Backup to backup everything...but that won't work after I'm "unrooted", will it?

Idk about Titanium, but nandroid is the Backup/restore feature in cwm. When you install something from the sdcard, its a flashable zip. Like the stock rom in my signature, that's a flashable zip. And yes, odin wipes everything.
