[Q] Theme compatibility - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What element of themes makes them (in)compatible with other ROMs?
I'm currently running Iced Glacier with the Androidian theme and I love the look. For better performance/to get a different feel for other ROMs I wanted to switch to Gr8Gorilla's Desire HD or one of the CM7 nightlies. I fear I wont be able to achieve the desired look if I switch (I know this particular theme won't run on CM7).

What ROM is everyone currently Running What's the best?

I just rooted my phone today after months of research now comes the fun part testing different ROMs so what's everyone running. I also wanted to know what ROMs have the black notification bar like Gingerbread. Thx in advance
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
GingerVillian is by far my favourite, very stable and quick
I have also just rooted my phone, I chose to use MIUI rom ported by G4rb4g3, its a great rom, feels quick and even has different themes that you can use. You can also get a gingerbread style notification bar
If your wanting just a complete black bar like Gingerbread is the only option you have at this moment is GingerVillian or some other Gingerbread based rom. You can also change the status bar to black through a CM based rom. The Sense based have the black bar but it has a gradient piece to it so it's not completely black like Gingerbread is
I've tried a MIUI rom probably 3 times and I can't use it..even though people say it's like the iPhone it's not..could never get used to it. I personally run Virtuous which is a Sense based rom and have themed it to my liking to look like Gingerbread at the current moment
meXdroid ExtraHotSauce v.02! Best rom ever. And i tried em all. You get black bar, custom pulldown bar, awesum animation in everything you do. Its based on cm 6.1.1 and is the most stable, try it out
G2 with ExtraHotSauce v0.2!!
Virtous .90
Pershoot 1.3
and .26.04.02.17 radio
love it, love sense launcher, wouldn't use anything else
Just go with the cm7 nightlies. Best thing since sliced bread.

The biggest question is if you want Sense UI or stock Android..once you decide that then you can decide on the rom lol
Every once in a while I go back to a sense rom and have to slap myself because I am reminded why themed stock is so much better. I am hooked on GingerVillain... Running 1.5 since release with no bugs or issues... very fast and excellent battery life. I think Villain rom is the best 2.3 rom for our G2's as of now.

See I'm the opposite..I prefer Sense just for the camera and dialer...the camera on my G2 takes better pictures with a Sense rom than the vanilla rom that came with it
GingerVillain 1.5, no question. I tried virtuous and it was nice, sense is very pretty, but I had to run it at 1.4ghz just to make it acceptable. Even then it slowed down plenty. Also tried Miui recently, also very pretty, but not user friendly.
Humming along nicely at 1.2ghz on Ginger and am quite happy, nothing else compares to it at the moment imo.

Ahmen to that, the camera app for the 1.72 Sense based rom is a step above what we've got atm... its the only reason id switch back to Virtuous, but I'm running CM7 nightly builds for now.

I've been playing around with Miui recently. Definitely a acquired taste
Go with CM7. Its quite stable and nightly rom updates are being cranked out, well, every night. Lots of support and you can be notified of new builds through rom manager. Requires latest cwm recovery image 3.0.0.5 (not the same as rom manager version). Comes with an oc/uv kernel up to 1.5ghz. Compatible with pershoots kernel.

I'm chill'n with Ginger Villain...'nuff said!
I am currently running the Cyanogenmod 7 Nightlys, I would like it to have more customization to the status bar like CM 6.1.1
dat miui rom is the best i have to say
The one-and-only CyanogenMod 7.

When the official CM7 comes out that will be top dog by far but right now I'm just using 6.1.1 cm I have used virtous but although it was nice looking not nearly as stable or as well put togather as cm6.1.1I have been soooooo much happier when I made the switch to cm

Posted this in a similar thread.
Started with CM6.1.1 but moved onto the CM7 Nightly's since Build 1. I keep up to date with every CM7 Nightly Build. What I have noticed based on benchmarking apps is that CM7 scores lower than CM6.1.1. This is with the updated Quadrant and SmartBench 2010 that is compatible with Gingerbread. The Quadrant score in my sig was with a early CM7 build and a non gingerbread optimized Quadrant. In day to day use I dont notice much of a speed difference though.

CM/Stock Android vs Sense

When I started using Android on my HD2, I hated stock android builds and was huge fan of Sense Builds.
However after using it all (Stock Desire, Desire HD ROMS) and trying out stock Android builds...i've started to like stock android/CM much more...
Even though HTC has done a great job and sense has the best out of the box experience, but with few additional softwares, widgets Launcher Pro and Dialer2...stock android is just as functional as sense and feels much more smoother/faster too...Animations also seems much more elegant..
What you guys think?
Also I don't know what CM7 gives over stock Gingerbread, stock builds are just as much functional and feels more light too?
my 1st try on android was shubcraft, very simple but later its annoy me of launcher pro unintend 'widget resize' reminder to get full purchase. Then, Iv try the Nexus base which has bland milky white menubar which make me boring. So I skip to Desire and Evo base rom. I think Im liking to use more because Sense is is very usefull with instant result widget like, message and people widgets, so handy without necessary open main program
But once getting to Desire HD, its like full of colors while other build stay sorta black and white. But I do like to MIUI and Gingerbread too, better than before

Opinions Wanted on Iced Glacier vs CM7

I currently run Iced Glacier, but am thinking about switching over to CM7.
I've read the pros and cons on CM7, but would like feedback from those that switched from IG to CM7, or switched to CM7 and went back to IG. Or those that just love IG/CM7 to death and wouldn't recommend anything else.
Please and thank you.

Both of those roms are great. It really comes down to if you want a MySense rom or something that is more of a straight vanilla Android with the CM extras. After you get used to CM7 it can be hard to go back to anything else, but it really depends on what you like.
My first suggestion would be to go to my EZ CwM 3.0.0.6 Install thread and install the latest recovery (3.0.0.6) and then from recovery make a Nandroid backup of your current rom. Then start flashing Roms till you find one you like.
I have been running the cm7 RC since it came out and I like it much more than iced glacier which was my previous rom. Everything from speed to functionality is an improvement. Just keep in mind that cm7 is still in the experimental mode and iced glacier is a stable rom so you have to be patient as cyanogen continues to make improvements.

I do currently roll .6 so I have the ability to go back and forth between 2.2 and 2.3 (or so that's what it tells me it's capable of).
i continue to keep flashing between these two roms because i just cant decide which one i like more...they both have the pluses and minuses but even those are very minor and are personal likes/dislikes...such as maybe a button location or theming...all which can be solved by 3rd party means
both run really well...i think cm7 runs better out of the box while IG runs better when you've flashed another kernel like Faux's latest...cm7 is also nice to not have the need to run a 3rd party app to control OC'ing IMO
i keep going back to IG cause it seems it fits the "look" i want more so than cm7 currently...it also feels a bit more natural than cm7...but at the same time i love messing with cm7 to learn gingerbread and learn whats to come for our phones
i think once cm7 hits RC2 or its full stable release ill switch to it full time when i can get a nice theme for it and get it looking and feeling the way i want
honestly you cant go wrong with either rom...if you want sense and good rom thats feels like the stock rom with all the bells and whistles of what roms add...go IG...if you want the latest and greatest that runs like a champ out of the box and is nice and simple AOSP but with a ton of features on the back end...go cm7
I also went from iced to cm7, used it for 3 hours before restoring back to iced. I'm so used to the sense UI that I love it. The contact lists is so much easier to use with dialing numbers on the pad to get that contact you want even though you could use the app dialer one to get the same features on cm7.
I don't know what else it is but I'm sticking to iced (sense) until atleast cm7 becomes stable.

I switched from IG to CM7 at some point in January and have not returned. CM7 was my first CM, and there are things about it that keep me there. Many things....here's what comes immediately to mind:
Usability improvements:
Notification widgets allow me to have six toggles of my choosing on the notification bar.
Rotary unlock gesture so much clearer, obvious, easier, and less "oops" prone than the Sense downward gesture to unlock/answer.
Lockscreen functionality out the wazoo, twelve ways from Sunday to configure and use.
CPU clocking management for performance/battery built-in, no SetCPU or CPU Tuner needed
Mass storage on/off when USB connected easier to manage than in Sense
Things I like as well, but haven't yet used:
OpenVPN client
Preferred apps (granted, you could do this on any ROM):
Built in ADW Launcher over Sense's launcher, whatever it is called
Google Voice Search over Genius Button
Google Car Home over Car Dock
IG is the Stock ROM with performance improvements and some -- some, but not all -- bloatware removed, and some prettiness added, like a transparent notification bar with a cute logo. It's very nice. But I prefer CM.
When I flashed it the RC was the latest version out that's really the only reason.

Before you read this, it only contains my opinions. Don't get mad at me for them.
I really love Iced Glacier. It has a better integration of features (Facebook, Visual Voicemail, Twitter). But CM 7 is just all around cleaner. Sense is bogged down with a lot of nonsense (haha! funny pun!). The launcher and widgets take up way too much memory. LaucherPro is faster and more customizable with much less size and memory consumption. CM7's lockscreen is better. And CM7 has volume button track change. And camera button track pause/play. This is clutch for me! I can't go back to IG because of this. I got better battery life and performance from IG, but CM7 has all the extras I need.
I currently run iced glacier 1.1.6
Everything works flawlessly. Its so fast and smooth. I have a G2 running CM 6.1.1 and its stable and perfection.
If CM on the mytouch runs a bit more stable I would throw it on.

This is simply a vanilla android vs sense question. I like sense so I stick with Iced Glacier. I find vanilla android, well, vanilla, kinda boring and less useful for the way I use my phone. This is no knock on cm it's just my personal preference.

I'm just curious cause I was having some issues that no one else is seeming to have while running IG...such as contacts problems, visual voicemail having to be re-set up every time I restart, internet crashing at times...
So I was just curious on how people felt on each, and what their experiences were like.

[GUIDE] Guide to picking a ROM

Back when I got this phone a few months ago, I was having a hard time choosing a good rom that suits me. I tested nearly every rom that's out there and *think* I have something I'm going to stay on for quite a while. The process would have been much easier, though, if there was a guide to choosing a rom, so that's exactly what I made for the noobs that just got this phone. So without further ado:
HOW TO CHOOSE A ROM
DISCLAIMER: IF ANYTHING BAD HAPPENS TO YOUR PHONE, INCLUDING BRICKING, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE. IF SOMETHING GOOD HAPPENS, THEN I GUESS IT WAS ME.
Before you choose a rom, you should learn a bit first.
There are three main types of roms:
AOSP (built from source)
Sense (built off HTC roms)
Senseless (a Sense rom without sense… more on this later)
Within AOSP roms, there are two main types: vanilla UI and custom UI. Vanilla UI roms run on Froyo (2.2) or Gingerbread (2.3, latest version except for Honeycomb). These have the stock Android UI. You can tell if a rom is AOSP by visual inspection of the dock. In Froyo AOSP roms, the dock has a background of a rounded, translucent rectangle with two dividers, with a 4x4 tiny grid for the app drawer button in the middle. In Gingerbread AOSP roms, the dock has a background of a sharp-cut grey rectangle with no dividers, with a 4x4 tiny grid for the app drawer button in the middle. This doesn’t always work, as some Sense themes will change the dock, but Sense roms will almost always also have a black top notification bar, which in AOSP roms (Froyo or Gingerbread) is always white.
AOSP roms are built from the Android Open Source Project. Because Android is open source, anyone can take the code, add, remove, or change features, and create their own version of Android. The current (stable) Android version is Gingerbread 2.3, but the only phone using it is the Nexus S and no manufacturer has made their own version except for Samsung (Nexus S only). Enter AOSP building. Because Gingerbread is available in the AOSP, devs can download the source, add the necessary drivers, mod it, and release it. This is what CyanogenMod 7 or OM(F)GB is.
There are Froyo 2.2 AOSP roms also, but since HTC has made their own Froyo with Sense, there is no point in using an AOSP rom just to have Froyo. There is if you want extra customizations and hate Sense. Personally, I would never use a Froyo AOSP rom, only a Gingerbread one but that’s just me.
Then there are roms with really customized UIs like MIUI and LiquidMetal/Light. They look nothing like the standard AOSP UI. MIUI looks like an iPhone, and LiquidMetal looks like… nothing I’ve ever seen before. Check it out yourself.
Sense roms are built off HTC official roms. There are three main types: Incredible-based roms (based on the Incredible stock rom), Evo-based roms (based on the Evo 4G stock rom), and New Sense roms (based on Desire Z, Desire HD, or Incredible S stock roms). Incredible based roms are the result of a dev taking the official rom and adding or removing stuff. Evo based roms are based off ports from the Evo official rom or ports of an already modded Evo rom. These roms are a bit faster than real Incredible roms. Porting is easy because the devices are very similar. New Sense roms are ported from Desire Z/HD or Incredible S. They have a “Personalize” menu that replaces the “Add” menu, which allows you to use HTC-supported skins.
They can also rotate the launcher. You can tell old sense roms from new sense roms by pressing menu at the home screen and see if there is an item called add or personalize. Old sense will have add, but new sense will have personalize.
Senseless roms are just sense roms without sense. This probably makes no sense (lol). Basically, you can use launchers like ADW or LauncherPro without leaving sense running. This is better because sense will take up battery and CPU and if you don’t use it then it’s a waste. There is a desensitizing script at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724813 . I haven’t tried it.
Q: BUT WHAT SHOULD I CHOOSE?
A: Have you read the stuff above? If not, then read it. If you have, proceed to the “Android Rom Personality Test” below.
1. Do I like HTC Sense UI? (Quick Info: HTC Sense UI is the UI that comes on your device stock. Distinctive Characteristics: Flip Clock, Black Status Bar. Sense also has a ton of awesome widgets.)
a. Yes. I love it! Proceed to Question 2
b. No. I hate it! Proceed to Question 4
2. Do I like the Inc/Evo Sense or the Desire Z/HD/Inc S Sense better? (Quick Info: Do you like to rotate the homescreen and retain Sense? Do you like HTC supported themes? Yes to anything = I prefer Desire Z/HD/Inc S)
a. Inc/Evo Sense. Proceed to Question 3
b. Desire Z/HD/Inc S Sense. Proceed to Rom Recommendations (Type 3)
3. Do I like any Inc theme or Evo theme?
a. I like a particular Inc theme. Proceed to Rom Recommendations (Type 1)
b. I like a particular Evo theme. Proceed to Rom Recommendations (Type 2)
c. I don’t know. Proceed to Rom Recommendations (Type 1 and 2)
4. Do I like any of the HTC apps (News or Mail for example)?
a. I like them but not Sense. Proceed to Rom Recommendations (Type 4)
b. I hate them in addition to Sense. Proceed to Question 5
5. Do I like the Stock android interface?
a. Yes. I like it. Proceed to Rom Recommendations (Type 5)
b. No. I hate it in addition to Sense. Proceed to Rom Recommendations (Type 6).
ROM RECOMMENDATIONS:
Type 1: You should use an Incredible-based Sense rom. My favorites are Skyraider Sense, Redemption, and Magnolia.
Type 2: You should use an Evo-based Sense rom. My favorites are Incredibly Re-engineered, Warm 2.2, and Redemptive rEVOlution.
Type 3: You should use a New Sense Rom. My favorites are Uber Z and Warm Z.
Type 4: You should use a Senseless rom or use the Desensitize script on any Sense rom. I don’t have any recommendations.
Type 5: You should use an AOSP rom. For Gingerbread I recommend Cyanogenmod 7 or OM(F)GB. For Froyo I don’t know, I haven’t used an AOSP Froyo rom before.
Type 6: Use a “Different UI” rom. These are MIUI and Liquid Metal/Light. I prefer Light though they aren’t too different. Also there is the Meizu M9 rom which looks like a refined MIUI but it’s very buggy.
CREDITS: Thanks to the community for being great. I don’t claim that any of these roms are my work.
I will try to maintain this guide (for example add the Gingerbread Sense rom from Huashan if it ever gets done).
Q & A: TO BE ADDED LATER ON

Rom poll

I have been wondering lately how alike sense 3's "3d" transitions are to adw ex's cube inverted transitions, and it got me wondering how many people wanted sense 3 just because the 3d aspect of it (like me) and i'd like to hear what users here on xda would prefer of these two rom concepts: sense 3 (any rendition available or to come available) or any version of cm7 with the system launcher replaced with adw ex before flashing (by unzipping the rom, replacing the one apk in system/apps and re-zipping). I know adw ex is a paid app and that in itself may be a deciding factor but to those who dont care about said cost, what made you choose sense 3? Or what made you decide on a cm7 rom with "3d" transitions instead. personally I prefer hyperdroid cm7 because right now cyanogen mod is insanely fast, fully functional, has tons of features only offered in cm7, and adw ex is incredibly versatile. But I find myself wanting the sense 3 lockscreen more and more. So what does the community think?
I know some of you guys are plagued with this decision like I am lol
