Opinions Wanted on Iced Glacier vs CM7 - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently run Iced Glacier, but am thinking about switching over to CM7.
I've read the pros and cons on CM7, but would like feedback from those that switched from IG to CM7, or switched to CM7 and went back to IG. Or those that just love IG/CM7 to death and wouldn't recommend anything else.
Please and thank you.

Both of those roms are great. It really comes down to if you want a MySense rom or something that is more of a straight vanilla Android with the CM extras. After you get used to CM7 it can be hard to go back to anything else, but it really depends on what you like.
My first suggestion would be to go to my EZ CwM 3.0.0.6 Install thread and install the latest recovery (3.0.0.6) and then from recovery make a Nandroid backup of your current rom. Then start flashing Roms till you find one you like.

I have been running the cm7 RC since it came out and I like it much more than iced glacier which was my previous rom. Everything from speed to functionality is an improvement. Just keep in mind that cm7 is still in the experimental mode and iced glacier is a stable rom so you have to be patient as cyanogen continues to make improvements.

What made you choose to go with RC vs Nightly?

I do currently roll .6 so I have the ability to go back and forth between 2.2 and 2.3 (or so that's what it tells me it's capable of).

i continue to keep flashing between these two roms because i just cant decide which one i like more...they both have the pluses and minuses but even those are very minor and are personal likes/dislikes...such as maybe a button location or theming...all which can be solved by 3rd party means
both run really well...i think cm7 runs better out of the box while IG runs better when you've flashed another kernel like Faux's latest...cm7 is also nice to not have the need to run a 3rd party app to control OC'ing IMO
i keep going back to IG cause it seems it fits the "look" i want more so than cm7 currently...it also feels a bit more natural than cm7...but at the same time i love messing with cm7 to learn gingerbread and learn whats to come for our phones
i think once cm7 hits RC2 or its full stable release ill switch to it full time when i can get a nice theme for it and get it looking and feeling the way i want
honestly you cant go wrong with either rom...if you want sense and good rom thats feels like the stock rom with all the bells and whistles of what roms add...go IG...if you want the latest and greatest that runs like a champ out of the box and is nice and simple AOSP but with a ton of features on the back end...go cm7

I also went from iced to cm7, used it for 3 hours before restoring back to iced. I'm so used to the sense UI that I love it. The contact lists is so much easier to use with dialing numbers on the pad to get that contact you want even though you could use the app dialer one to get the same features on cm7.
I don't know what else it is but I'm sticking to iced (sense) until atleast cm7 becomes stable.

I switched from IG to CM7 at some point in January and have not returned. CM7 was my first CM, and there are things about it that keep me there. Many things....here's what comes immediately to mind:
Usability improvements:
Notification widgets allow me to have six toggles of my choosing on the notification bar.
Rotary unlock gesture so much clearer, obvious, easier, and less "oops" prone than the Sense downward gesture to unlock/answer.
Lockscreen functionality out the wazoo, twelve ways from Sunday to configure and use.
CPU clocking management for performance/battery built-in, no SetCPU or CPU Tuner needed
Mass storage on/off when USB connected easier to manage than in Sense
Things I like as well, but haven't yet used:
OpenVPN client
Preferred apps (granted, you could do this on any ROM):
Built in ADW Launcher over Sense's launcher, whatever it is called
Google Voice Search over Genius Button
Google Car Home over Car Dock
IG is the Stock ROM with performance improvements and some -- some, but not all -- bloatware removed, and some prettiness added, like a transparent notification bar with a cute logo. It's very nice. But I prefer CM.

When I flashed it the RC was the latest version out that's really the only reason.

Before you read this, it only contains my opinions. Don't get mad at me for them.
I really love Iced Glacier. It has a better integration of features (Facebook, Visual Voicemail, Twitter). But CM 7 is just all around cleaner. Sense is bogged down with a lot of nonsense (haha! funny pun!). The launcher and widgets take up way too much memory. LaucherPro is faster and more customizable with much less size and memory consumption. CM7's lockscreen is better. And CM7 has volume button track change. And camera button track pause/play. This is clutch for me! I can't go back to IG because of this. I got better battery life and performance from IG, but CM7 has all the extras I need.

I currently run iced glacier 1.1.6
Everything works flawlessly. Its so fast and smooth. I have a G2 running CM 6.1.1 and its stable and perfection.
If CM on the mytouch runs a bit more stable I would throw it on.

This is simply a vanilla android vs sense question. I like sense so I stick with Iced Glacier. I find vanilla android, well, vanilla, kinda boring and less useful for the way I use my phone. This is no knock on cm it's just my personal preference.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

I'm just curious cause I was having some issues that no one else is seeming to have while running IG...such as contacts problems, visual voicemail having to be re-set up every time I restart, internet crashing at times...
So I was just curious on how people felt on each, and what their experiences were like.

[Q] Few questions on set up. (coming from nexus one)

Since I am new to the MT4G and sense ROMs, I have a few questions.
What is the CPU freq most everyone is using for day to day. I have mine set at 1.4ghz as 1.7 seems too much.
I am running the latest Iced Glacier ROM. What was the bloatware removed? There is still a lot in this ROM I do not use. (like stocks, setup and myfaves) What is safe to remove?
This ROM seems huge to me.... its over 200mb! even the most bloated Nexus ROM I used barely reached 100mb.
Is there any home replacement that will allow the sense widgets? ADW EX will not. Seems that the widgets would be framework based and not launcher based.
Trackpad wake, is that a root feature or did the stock ROM allow that as well?
I literally had my phone for less than an hour before it was rooted, and that includes the 30 min drive from the UPS center. So the differences between the stock software and the modified are lost on me.
Any tips to working with sense better? It has a lot of nice convenience and flash compared to vanilla android. I figured if I am going to use a sense ROM may as well use it to its potential. If I don't I may as well go with CyanogenMOD. (CM7 on the nexus was nice btw, I think I liked the new stock android keyboard the best of all I have used including swype)
Any custom kernels that work better than the one in Iced Glacier? (give reasons why) I need good battery life, so anything reasonable that helps is great. I am not on it constantly and eating battery, but signal is spotty at work; who knew carbon fiber was such a good RF blocker...
I think that is all for now... I am off to bed. 12 hour work days 7 days a week can get to you. (another reason I'm asking questions outright rather than extensive searching on the forum)
Anybody?...
For one, the rom is so big because it's a sense rom. Track pad wake works out the gate. Theres no home replacement that you can use sense widgets with

Depends on your personal hardware. I run mine at 1.8 on the smaetass kernel with no problems, but some can't do that.
I am running the latest Iced Glacier ROM. What was the bloatware removed? There is still a lot in this ROM I do not use. (like stocks, setup and myfaves) What is safe to remove?
Stocks (and widget), myfaves (and Widgets), twitter widget, flicker, and a few others.
This ROM seems huge to me.... its over 200mb! even the most bloated Nexus ROM I used barely reached 100mb.
It is huge compared to an aosp rom like was on the Nexus, but that's because of all the stuff added with HTC sense.
Is there any home replacement that will allow the sense widgets? ADW EX will not. Seems that the widgets would be framework based and not launcher based.
No, sadly there isn't. The sense Widgets are so deeply integrated with the rest of the launcher that such is not possible. However, it is possible to find some Widgets that do similar things.
Trackpad wake, is that a root feature or did the stock ROM allow that as well?
That was on stock as well, and most custom roms will incorporate this highly popular feature.
I literally had my phone for less than an hour before it was rooted, and that includes the 30 min drive from the UPS center. So the differences between the stock software and the modified are lost on me.

Well, the best thing I can say on this is to not expect it to be like aosp. That's the point of being sense, its unique in its look. It just wont always be the fastest on the block.

Not really sure how to answer this question, really. Grankin has a few good kernels for iced glacier that can bring the speed up to 1.7 Guzman, and the smartass governor built into dumfuq's kernel (built for cm, but has since been modded to be compatible with sense roms like iced) enables it to get better speed and battery life.

Thanks I will do that. I will get it down sometime, just different than what I am used to.
BTW which smartass kernal should I use? I'm assuming the cm6 version.
Yup... But you have to use fastboot to get it to work right.

Yeah, but speaking as a user of said kernel (albeit on cm7), it's worth it.

EDIT: also, I dont think I mentioned this previously, but the default setup for the cm6 kernel will break wi-fi on sense ROMs, so be sure to set up the wi-fi fix that he added today.
I am currently on ice glacier also but I really like eVil's Desire ROMs. there's a Z and HD flavor. they are more full on stock sense experience than iced which is a more/less clone of espresso.
I personally prefer the stock sense to espresso...there's more HTC Widgets and some other cool stuff. I also really like the trackpad unlock in addition to wake which is built in on those as well. the only thing I REALLY miss on those ROMs is the espresso dialer which has the built in VIP calls (allows a VIP contact to ring even with ringer / sound off).
I haven't tried gorillas DHD sense port yet but prob will in a couple days.
and before you ask - the difference between the Z and HD ROMs is Z has a landscape rotating home screen and larger fonts by default and HD doesnt have the homescreen rotation and has a smaller font. they're about identical as far as I can tell aside from that. I had no real problems on 0.2.x versions of Z and HD but eVil just released 0.3 and it seems a couple ppl are complaining of a quirk here and there..btw both of those eVil ROMs have a 1.49ghz kernel with built in smartass scaling which I really like.
I'm currently oc'ed to 1.2 max on iced 1.1.6 to try and maximize battery.

Best Non-CM Gingerbread ROM?

As the title states looking for opinions on what non-CM Gingerbread ROMs are working best for other users. This also excludes ROMs based on CM. As much as Im not a Sense fan, Im at the point where I dont care if it is Sense or not. Im thinking of switching from CM7 mainly cause the GPS issue has finally gotten to me (ive tried all fixes and have GPS working but its so crappy compared to stock). Enough of that, time to move on. Welcome to opinions on some Gingerbread roms.
well i find the meXdroidMod meXperia remeX really awesome, though its cm nightly based, i think a good non cm would be the ginger-sense by gingervillian
I never was a Sense fan until I came across Virtuous. Best ROM for the G2 in my opinion. I'm always trying other ROMs just to keep up with what's out there, but I keep coming back to Virtuous as my daily driver. Everything just works with it, including GPS.
MIUI hands down. I love how fast and smooth it is, especially with pershoot's latest kernel.
miui for sure...
was gonna suggest ultimate droid. but its cm7 based. sooo.. miui. best rom IMHO

Ultimatedroid definitely kicks ass. I really want to try the miui, but there are like five different ones in rom manager and two or three on the forum, no idea which is most up to date, supported the most, or used by the most people. Is miui supposed to be iphone clone?
Edit: UD is based off cyanogen also but actually feels like a rom all its own and not a CM ripoff.

Some issues with ultimatedroid(for g2) are thus follows:
~Gps is still borked.
~After you select one alternate theme no other one will install, same goes for boot animation though in the case of boot animations once you have selected an alternate you cannot change it.
~Font changes do not work.
~Applications like to uninstall themselves.
UD "seems" snappy but it is entirely due to sped up render effects. I pulled just as fast & faster quadrant scores running CM6.1.1 with pershoots latest kernel.
Speed is in the eye of the beholder people. So far virtually ever rom I've tried that is based on CM7 code has some sort of "gotta pray to machine gods" type element to get GPS going. Virtuous is laggy even with overclocking past 1ghz and if you don't dig SenseUI you're up a creek. The only major rom I have yet to try is MIUI but I really don't dig iphone style integration so I guess I'm just going to be stuck on CM6.1.1 till the official Gingerbread release for the g2 comes out.

I think the gps varies partly on hardware also, because I have never had any of the aforementioned problems on UD (given I never tried to change the font), and gps worked fine. As in accuracy three meters and under and no drifting. Gps works for me on all these roms that people say it is broke on when the OP states the technically it is working correctly. Coming from a vibrant before I have seen how wildly gps hardware quality can vary with a given model, I do believe people when they say it doesn't work for them but there are also people who never expierience these problems.

atm i am trying to get over my app drawer hate so i can try some more roms out there, sense seems to work best with the phone seen as it has been made for the keybaord or so i have have found anyway.
is there any luncher/mod out there that will remove an app form the drawer when its on a homepage?

I was using GingerVillain for months because my GPS wouldn't run on my old radio with CM7. Once i upgraded my radio I used CM7. GingerVillain was great considering it was would before CM7 but did have some issues with randomly restarting.
I don't believe the xboarders rom is CM based. It's just straight up, no bs, stock gingerbread.

Is it ok to delete CM7 and reinstall a froyo rom?

Just checking. Fed up with CM7 and its weird behaviours of unresponsive and hidden menu's so gonna change rom.
Just to double check, it's ok to wipe a gingerbred based rom then reinstall a froyo one isn't it?
I have a feeling I'm getting mixed up with hboots where its dodgy to downgrade.
Can someone clear this up?

Im running Cm7.1 which is 2.3.4 gingerbread and it isn't laggy at all,
no idea why you think that. Ive no experience with overclocked Froyo roms,
but Cm7.1 is definetly not laggy.
Yepp sense widgets work in Jokerdroid...
For me, I like some sense features which are not there in CM7. An important one is CM7 not having a smart dialer. Yes I know there are some third party apps out there like dialer one, go dialer etc. But they are not as good as HTC dialer.
Jokerdroid is great so far. Fast, more stable compared to CM7.
After alpharevx S-OFF, installing a sense rom, you won't have HTC wallpapers and setup wizard but there is a solution for that in the forums. Check full index thread in Android development forum. Everything is explained there.
I don't really care about HTC wallpapers, I always use custom pictures anyway.
What's the advantages of having setup wizard, doesn't sound like I'd need it.
You dont really need either one of them... It is just for the sake of completeness and some like the wallpapers. Also htc scenes is missing too. But as I said, not vital.
Set up wizard is not a must either. But then you have to manually set sync of gmail etc. Not a big deal.
Ive tried CM7 and Jokers too, Jokers was better for me because of sense, after that I flashed back the stock rom, with hcdr kernel. So I can overclock the cpu, and its much faster. Im waiting for the stable 2.3 sense rom.
Well, Jokerdroid is installing just now. Thought it was boot looping but its moved on now to an animated HTC screen so I assume all is going well.
I'll get setcpu on it once it finished and try it out.
EDIT: All is great bar one small problem (there's always one). The weather widget can't find my city! But it can easily in the stock, it's the same widget surely?

Which ROM should I try that would suit my needs?

Lately, I've been having quite a few issues with CM7. I've been flashing nightlies every day for a few months now and there is always some issue it seems. Besides instability, I'm a bit bored of CM. I'd like to try something new, something reliable, lightweight, and stable. I love being able to tweak every aspect of my phone though. Any suggestions?
I have tried (I have mt4G and G2) iced glacier, royal ginger, miui, cm6, cm7, and nightlies.
Personally, miui & cm7 are the best.
My girlfriend ran cm7 forever. She loves to tweak her phone but somehow had rotten luck, and glitched her phone on cm a lot.
I installed miui. She hated it right away, as did I, but later it grew on her. I did a nandroid backup and she asked for cm7 back. Now she says she likes miui better, and a bit later goes well I like them both.
My point. Dude try em all
Miui is pretty slick for customizing. I personally like my cm7 with the minimal theme and icons. It looks almost like dos. Green text on black for terminal. 2screens. Everything in folders. It owns. Anyhow. Done rambling

Keep in mind I've only had this for a single day, but I'm really liking meXdriod. It's like a flashy, better looking cm7. After I turned the screen animations off it seems faster than cm7 as well, and everything works just fine, wifi calling is my biggest requirement and it worked right away. I don't know how much weight you can give it, but with mexdroid set to 1.1 OC I got a 2200 on quadrant.

Yeah, pretty much. Flashing a new ROM only takes about 5 minutes (after its downloaded). May as well try a bunch, and see what you like best. Everyone has different needs and tastes. Maybe you don't have time to try them ALL, but at least start with a few recommendations, and try them out.
HTC Clay SuperCM7
Apart from CM7.1.0, my favorite rom for my G2 is HTC Clay's SuperCM7 2.4. Here's a link to where you can get the 2.3 version. I had to root around on the internet to find the slightly updated 2.4, he never released it or updated it in ClockworkMod.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076691
It runs fast and smooth and battery life if great. It's mostly just a themed/tweaked CM7, but it seems to have fewer issues. the only thing i really missed was access the FM Radio, but you may not use that at all.
I would suggest cm7 based roms. my favorite is the ice and fire with ice cream sandwich love. miui is nice but not my cup of tea... And beatmod bliss sense and desire hd 1.3 are my favorite sense 3.0/3.5 roms. but its your choice on whatever you like.
Ten words.
I'm using Virtuous 2.0.0. I have to admit that I like sense somehow. If you want a stable, smooth sense UI with an awesome cpu clock daemon, try this.

Why not use a CM7 stable release then? 7.1 just came out recently. You can't flash nightlies then complain about bugs and instability

ILWT CM7 and others..............
I find myself going back to ILWT every time I try a different ROM . It is the most customizable ROM IMO
Going to flash using virtuous beta 2.

Which rom should you try? ALL OF THEM.
Which rom should you stick with? the one you liked most.
I can't believe people are still making threads about this topic.
That's a bit harsh, some people don't want to experiment so much as just find something that works for them. Also, some of these rom's need a little time for a new person to learn about them before you can decide on it, so it's nice if people give objective opinions on the different types so a new person can at least get an idea of where to start. I've tried one of each of the main types (Sense, CM, and Miui) and didn't like any of the sense-types at all. I didn't like MIUI at first either but realized I could put GoLauncher on it and have it work like I want it to. On my phone at least it seems like MIUI runs faster than any of the others I've tried, at least it gives me higher scores on any of the benchmarks I've run using the same cpu setting.

There you go, fixed it for ya!

[Q] Can't Decide MIUI/SENSE/AOSP? :(

Hey guys if you dont know me I was a rom dev for the xperia but moved on to the DZ. HAven't yet made a rom for the DZ, yet.
But I have been flashing non-stop since i got this phone. Its just I can't decide what I should stick to, and what will match my needs.
So im a highschool student, calendars reminders are big for me and staying organized. I play basketball and watch it too so video and stuff is needed.
But Im also a dj/producer and i need the best sound. I also like to play games ocassionaly as well.
I really love Sense 3.0 but I cant handle the laggyness even with swap enabled, is there anything else that can be done? I was on virtuous 2.00 (sense 2.1) for 2 weeks it was stable and all, but the battery was pretty drainable fast. BlissBeatMod is promising if some of it can get less laggy. And we'll have to see what Virtuous Tretanique (Affinity) will go.
Aosp is nice and fast but I dont really get the nice looks and features that miui have to offer.
Miui is really nice im running BulletProof right now. But i still dont feel like its the "one". and the quality of music isnt as great on sense even with equalizer options on.
PLEASE TELL ME ANY SUGGESTIONS, ALL WILL BE APPRECIATED
i personally have ILWT CM7... fast yet battery efficient... plus, there's alot of themes you can add to it so it can be visually good too
btw, i saw your work man! you are LEGEND!! i encourage you to make a ROM for us!

Thanks a lot, once I decide what kind I will produce I will start.
Ok Im running ILWT. It is amazing. I put a theme on. Very fast. But still some reason it just seems "boring". And the sms app on aosp/cm7 isnt as sexy.
yea i know exactly where youre coming from, I always want a newer prettier ROM... I wish someone would release one that just didnt look like it was android almost, and not like iphone, or anything, something with an original GUI.. yes i realize that's a lot to ask btw and not something I would be able to do myself but I think it'd be cool and get a lot of support! In the mean time the one I've found to be the freshest for me is MIUI because of how the themes affect like everything and really the launcher is what catches my eye, im kinda excited for the ROU launcher
i used to use cm7 and miui before. cm7 is lightweight rom, smooth and has excellent battery life. but it is lack of killer feature such as in its sms functionality, the smart dialer and etc. of course you can always download apps from market for that functions but it takes forever to load those apps on startup.
so i moved to miui, which i am currently running with bulletproof miui rom. it is rich with functionality, ridiculously-convenient-built in-features and interfaces, but consume more battery compared to cm7 unless you made certain tweak on its OC/UC. but its interface lacks of originality because it is obviously a mimic of iOS. but so far i m happy using miui.
i want to try sense based rom, but from what i learned, sense based is laggy. i miss sense interface though. look clean.
OK, if you think cm7 is boring (and I agree) I suggest you give MexDroid a spin. It was my DD for quite some time. The only reason it's not anymore is because I found Bulletproof MIUI. but I'm sure you've already tried MIUI. if not. Tun4f1sh's Bulletproof is the ONLY one I recommend.
More options would be most welcome I'm sure. I'm trying to figure out how to port roms from hd forums at the moment. The collective's absolution looks pretty sweet.

If you use bootmanager (market app) you can install sense / miui and cyanogen at the same time... Only thing you have to do is seeting up the phonerom as sense (miui and cyanogen based mods run very smooth booting from sdcard)

Neat, I like that idea. Kinda like having a nand backup without the pain of restoring everytime you want to switch.
I also champion Bulletproof, tun4 and tsubus seem to make sure this Rom stays a top contender. There is also talk of miXdroid Mod which is a miui meXdroid, looking forward to seeing how that one turns out

Ya know what... forget what I said above, if this MixDroid thing happens I'll be happier than a /b/ troll.

MIUI is great, iv been runing Bulletproof, it's definitely unique miui whit its virtuos oc controller witch cough my eye. But now i got ICS fever on me, not for the isc gui but some of the features. I stumbled on Galnet MIUI whit ics framework. runing fine, tried it for couple days, and the batterylife seems fine, maybe. Ill stick to this since it seems to work, and hope for updates whit possibly some new ics features.(its still same MIUI ui and functionality)
after we get somewhat working ICS, i will try that a little, and propably get back to MIUI.
I'm on Bulletproof MIUI at the moment but since the iPhone-esque UI makes my eyes hurt I installed LPP and some icon pack (can't remember the name). That way I still have the looks of Android but can combine with the impressive speed and flow of the Bulletproof MIUI ROM.
CM 7.1 for me lacks a little bit of polish visually (can't wait for CM9!) compared to Sense based ROMs and IMO MIUI offers that. I like Sense but any Sense based ROM I've tried has started to get laggy on me after a while.
Bulletproof MIUI for the win...I also like good old Cyanogen too, but for a nice mix of speed AND looks MIUI is tops for me
Love the look of Sense, but too slow and laggy
Check my thread, i got a bunch of videos of roms and see which one you like the best

in this few days, i have been testing 3 sense 3.5 rom, beatmode, affinity and rcmix.
for someone who has a very sensitive sense like me, i cant stand to wait for the phone to response due to insufficient memory in sense 3.5.
its time to go back to miui bulletproof.
I have tried many of them. CM and MIUI is cool, I just miss too many features from sense. Sense 3.0 is either laggy or will get laggy after a while. So, I always go back to my Virtuous Sense 2.0.0 NAND backup.
But: question here: why is this draining the battery soooo badly? Apart from this, this could be THE perfect ROM.

I have tried muiu, mexdroid, htc clay, g-lite, sense 2.0, unity sense and the affinity sense. I keep finding myself going back to the most stable, configurable and updated ROM ILWT CM7 (268).

Sense is smooth and polished, but every custom Sense ROM that I have ever flashed is a battery hog, even the Sense 2.1 + 3.0 hybrids.
So my current favorite is G-lite 1.05 - it's like stock + overclocking + better than stock battery life (due to deep sleep)
I like sense and am currently running Virtuous Afinity but I can see me switching to an ASOP build of ICS when it's stable enough

Curious to know what you like most about ILWT, especially compared with mexdroid and miui?
