Samsung Vibrant old news already?

Ok so the Vibrant is not that old but seems like its forgotten already. Well the whole Galaxy S series! Bs since its only like 4 months old. Makes me mad that android devices get left behind so fast just to be replaced so quick. Not everyone can buy a new android device every week. I love my Vibrant but this crap makes me mad! Come on SLOW down with android devices already. Just my 2 cents! And no im not a fan boy. Just wanted to get this off my mind. Thanks a million!

Well as long as Samsung support the current Galaxy S line with updates I will be happy, if they don't, I know I won't be buying a Samsung phone again.

Even though they keep coming out with new phones doesn't mean yours isn't good. Root that baby, flash a rom and fall in love with your phone all over again.

Yea I Know how electronics are.just think its stupid.but love my vibrant. Already rooted.just need offical froyo 2.2 and and I will be happy!

cant wait for dual core smartphones with dedicated gpu.

actual hard buttons
and of course ANDROID

And of course with the same 13-1500mAh batteries these has, so we'll have like 5000 threads about terrible battery life, etc.
Personally, I don't think there is anything great about the Vibrant outside of the screen. That was Samsung's main selling point. The GPU is good, but there are now apps popping up left and right that are claiming "No Support for Samsung Galaxy S."
Yahoo Messenger for Android now has no Support for Galaxy S, Lol.
Not going to bother buying another Samsung phone anyways, but certainly not going to buy another phone with internals outside of the mainstream.
I personally view them going in another direction IRT hardware has a massive failure. That's like buying a Windows Computer with an AMD Processor, and Microsoft telling you Live Messenger isn't supported on you computer because you got AMD instead of Intel, or Microsoft Office won't run on your computer because you're running Windows Vista instead of 7, or WoW won't run on your computer because you got an ATI instead of an NVidia. Massive failure, IMO.
Apps > Hardware.
Then there's the issue of a bunch of apps simply being incompatible due to the phone only having Android 2.1...
If you expect a Nexus S or whatever to change that, then I dunno what to say. 90% of high end smartphones run Snapdragons and most don't run TouchWiz, so developers will continue to target architectures which are the majority - as they should, cause targetting Samsung's phone and ending up with apps that crash and burn on all those other phones would be utterly retarded.

in a few weeks new Galaxy S/Nexus S coming to Tmobile. maybe it will be dual and 99.9% it will have flash. and the best thing, no more waiting for updates, and it will already come with Android 2.3

Please tell me your not mad that technology is advancing. Really? Is it such a bad thing? Nobody is forcing you to go out and buy the newest, fastest and greatest device. Personally I think while the vibrant may lack in 2.2 and some other things like flash and a 4.3" screen or HSPA+ it more than makes up for in MONSTER graphics computing, overall speed, a beautiful 4" SAMOLED screen and a camera that takes pretty amazing pics. I did expect better support from samsung considering the phone is across all carriers However I did buy the phone as is so I cant complain too much. it still holds its own against any other device out right now. Plus... The Nexus 2 will basically be a Galaxy S so we should see easy porting to our devices once gingerbread is released and android 3.0.

Hopefully we'll see some advanced implimentation of battery technology to make these handsets last a while with usage. Cause I don't want to see another ZOMG! I got 47 hours of battery.... with everything off.

Thing about it is, I thought about this too.. What is out that your phone can't do? It can run all the latest apps, and will even be able to support gingerbread. You could have a 5ghz phone, but what good will it do? The 1/4 second that it would be quicker would not be noticeable.

Galaxy S. Maybe the next version will include the P, so it will have a GPS~

Slow down??? Hell no! Speed up with new devices already. And the Vibrant is just fine. I use it, it has an awesome screen, and new updates get uploaded on XDA almost on a daily basis. And I love watching new phones appear. It just means that by the time I get around to another upgrade in about 14 months, the phones at that time will be that much better. So keep innovating, companies, and improving and releasing new phones.

Has anyone noticed the multitude of G2 ads everywhere? Seems like HTC is really pushing the advertising with that phone...i dont understand because i have messed with the phone and i dont think its really that good. any agree?

What exactly are you talking about. No one is complaining about technology advancing. People are complaining mostly (and mostly indirectly) about the rate at which hardware/devices are deprecated and forgotten about.
Lots of people come from a long background in using computers, so they are not used to seeing a 1 year old device become "unsupported" for the most part.

Yes, those threads piss me off so much I don't even open battery threads anymore unless it's one I posted in and there's a chance a reply may be directed at me.
Most people with great battery life hardly use the phone. I get 20 hours easy when it sits there in Standby for 18.5 of those hours. Once I start using the phone, the battery is crap. I actually had to uninstall some very useful applications so the battery wouldn't commit suicide.

Yep. Actually noticed the G2 add play 3x tonight. The hinge is crap, but at least the phone works as expected.
A phone doesn't have to be "really that good" to be worth the investment. In many cases, like the Vibrant, when the phone is supposed to be "really that good" it just turns out to be a failed result of overreaching.
I got this phone because it had a lot of storage in it, and it's not like T-Mobile had that many choices when it came to high end smartphones when the Vibrant was released. Some people replying to posts act like the G2, MyTouch4G, HD7, etc. were being sold in stores in July/August.
There was the HD2, and the Vibrant. That's it. The rest of T-Mobile's phones were utter crap.

This right here. What should have been a wonderful experience has been badly sullied by non-existent support.
Buying a phone on a 2 year contract and finding out that the phone isn't even properly supported for 4 months should be enough to piss anyone off.

Im a huggeee android fan n was looking forward to getting an android tablet next month...before buyin i wanted to ask some questions regarding the tablet.
1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?

Then I'd say wait it out.

If you're a huge Android fan you'd already have a Tab!
My advise is, if you can wait, wait. Personally, i've been waiting a long time for a decent Android tablet - I even bought a cheap chinese iRobot, and had a Huawei S7 on preorder (cancelled when the shipping date kept slipping).
So far, the Tab has exceeded my expectations for an Android tablet, given that the OS is supposedly "not optimized" for tablets, which is a phrase that many reviews have used, but few (if any) have actually demonstrated due to incredibly lazy journalism.

Indeed! Just look at the comments in most of the reviews, and this invariably crops up time and time again from people who haven't even tried the Tab!
When an iPad displays an iPhone app in a "window", it's a feature of the OS that allows the tablet to take advantage of the iPhone ecosystem, yet when the Tab does the same for Android apps it's because the OS is "not optimized" for tablets.
Got to love those reviews that say that Android doesn't support the Tab's native resolution, when in actuality it supports any resolution and a well-coded app can take advantage of it. All because it's not an "official" Market resolution, which Google could "fix" by just saying that it is so!

Couldn't have said it any better!

I've been a long time WM fan, but just got a Tab about an hour ago! cant wait to try it out properly! i used a demo at carphone warehouse and it is the ideal android device, its very quick! im new to the android world so i dont know much. but i highly recommend it!

Thanks for the help guys....i know the OS its not optimized for the device but will it support gingerbread and honeycomb or the processor is too weak for that?
Also will it support custom roms like cyanogen?

Well ive been a Windows fan for some years but ive had my galaxy tab for over a week now and i cant put it down, im really happy with it

The 1ghz Hummingbird and PowerVR 540GX GPU is the most powerful single core SOC on the market right now, and it's arguably competive or superior to the Tegra 2 in graphics performance as well. It can handle 2.3 just fine, and should be good for 2.4 or whatever version number Honeycomb gets as well. Nobody can answer if Samsung will support it, but the community should have all the tools to do so as well.
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
Video calling is ok to good, same as any mobile device, but with BIGGER FACES. Qik, Tango, Fring and Skype are your current choices for software. All work best on WiFi, obviously
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
There's no REAL alternative at the moment. There's a lot of lesser alternatives (no phone, no GPS, lower quality materials, lower resolution, etc), but nothing better in this form factor. In the mobile electronics world, there's always something better coming.
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
In time, you can, because Samsung didn't lock the bootloader and they've released the source code for all the shipping variants. Just keepin mind that no Android device has custom ROM support right out of the gate, not even the vaunted Nexus One. It takes time, multiplied by sales. I should also mention that the Tab has sold nearly as many units as the Nexus One, if the reports are accurate.

Not sure if its official or obvious or both. But a someone working from Samsung told me that someone has just received official RC for Gingerbread for Galaxy S.
Sorry for the spam but wanted to share the joy that Samsung hasn't given up on 12 million Galaxy S users....yet.

Sure Hope so! im getting tired of waiting around for samsung. It's this type of customer service that makes me think of switching to an HTC for my next phone, even though i will miss out on dual core and high end video graphics.
Manufacturers need to start focusing on the total experience rather than hardware. (i would love to see how battery lives of next gen android phones compare)

HTC is better? The Desire came out at the same time as the Galaxy S around here (I chose between the two), and they are basically in the same spot we are. http://www.product-reviews.net/2011...htc-desire-owners-will-get-update-eventually/ Waiting for it to come...eventually. A quick search reveals the Incredible doesn't have it officially yet either.
At least us XDA'ers won't have to wait an eternity for carrier-specific releases. In Bell's case they will be months molesting 2.3 (and possibly screwing it up) even after Samsung is finished, but I won't be beholden to their whims.

Well, this person works in Nordic division for Samsung so can't really say. My guess is European first. The word is that the release will take some time because Samsung received a lot of complaints for Froyo- so they want to do this one right and freeze the development for Galaxy S- consider it as a farewell gift from Samsung.

I honestly belive, that we will get 2.3 (and mabe some minor improvements within 2.3), but that will be our last update.

Do you really expect something great and/or new with 2.3 or 2.whatever??
There will be some other issues again. The battery is still the same, the display is the same, the button won't change, the scratches your devices already have won't go ... so ... what is it good for?!
My stock Galaxy S was ok for calling, sms, mails, and some enternmaint as it comes. So it did/does what they said. Switching to other ROM or adjusting this or that was born by some boring nights at work, just to see how the things are working. But no real need to change anything. So, if they will release another ROM - nice, but if not - who cares.
To have always the newest (is it always better?), the more shiny (unfortunaley it will be easier scratched), the more expensive (did you earn more money in the last past?), the glamour of modern style (do you really think a smartphone beams you to the rich und famous?) belongs exactly to:

According to Eldar Murtazin from mobile-review.com 2.3 version should be in 2 months time for Galaxy S phones. At least in Europe.

Am I the only one relying so much on 2.3 fixing the sluggish interface to give us iOs/wp7 smoothness?

No your not the only one. On paper the Galaxy S should be faster than the Desire (which i owned before Galaxy S). But it lags so much its terrible sometimes .. im even embarrased to show the phone to iPhone users.
The problem is the crappy RFS filesystem!!! (Google it). I hope they get rid of that stupid crap and switch to EXT2 or 4.
Sometimes the phone just doesnt react to anything .. and i end up hammering the thumb on the screen. But the phone is frozen for several seconds. Its so anoying!

lol, you are kidding right? as far as i know no htc device has official gingerbread yet so ... i'd say if samsung is able to produce a RC yet they are definitely on track! also i prefer a a good and tested firmware over a buggy and unoptimized one like the first 2.2 firmwares.
and yep: I'm also looking forward with joy to a fantastic 2.3 firmware. i guess they improved a lot due to the production of the nexus s. although i'd prefer a stable release of cm7 ...

don't be embarrassed, just install the speedmod kernel by hardcore and it will be faster than all the stupid ios&wp7 devices of your friends together . beliefe me!

No kernel or ext4 tweaks will fix the lag on our phones, i've been trying everything since day one, its hopeless. The problem isn't just the rfs filesystem, its also touchwiz.

My i9000 outperforms both my friends iphones and android devices in speed and smoothness. (ok, the iphones are a bit smoother... But it's still better than the androids)
Exept for the GPS, there is nothing wrong with the galaxy that can't be fixed by mods.
And so far, Samsung has a pretty good update record. All of their unlocked international phones have got updates as fast, or even faster than other OEM's.

Install js5 and speedmod.
Activate lagfix, and i can promis you it will kill the iphone.
And with fasterfix and GPSaids the GPS is really good to.

I am using a custom rom with speed mod my galaxy s is faster and smoother than ever. It scores almost 1500 on quadrant edition.

As u can see Sammy is embracing the root community by giving a Dev that root phones there phone and telling them to do there thing. When all these other company's HTC included are locking down bootloaders Sammy says please make our device better. Plus the galaxy tab 2 is getting great reviews it looks like its going to be a sammy year for me .

This, & Sammy gave the dev a GSM model, which doesn't mean **** for us CDMA users, & if you don't agree then just go ask the devs in the Epic forum who are still trying their damndest to get CM7 fully running while the Captivate & Vibrant both has been fully blessed by Cyanogen hisself.

It's a promising sign but I'm not sure I'm quite convinced that Samsung is trying to change their ways. Of course, we also have no proof that HTC is going to truly unlock their bootloaders either.

My experience with 3 stock Samsung Android phones on Sprint has left a bitter taste in my mouth.
1. I had the original "Moment" from day 1. Paid $475 for it and had nothing but problems.
2. My wife has the "Transform" (I gave Samsung a mulligan for the Moment since it was 1st generation....) -- big mistake, almost as crappy as the Moment.
3. My Daughter has the "Intercept" -- got it at the same time as the Transform (so I did not have a chance to see that the Moment was more a precursor to the craptastic to come rather than a "one off" mistake.
Even without rooting and romming -- the EVO is head and shoulders above any of the Samsung phones I have seen. As far as being able to actually use it without weird things happening.

Had I not known better (owning other Android devices) -- could have sworn that Samsung was trying to make Android look like a steaming, buggy, not ready for prime time, piece of crap OS....When in fact it is not that at all.
As a last desperate measure before purchasing my EVO....I rooted and installed a custom ROM on my Moment -- and it actually was a pretty good experience to turn it into a device I could at least make phone calls on and send texts (which was worlds above stock Moment -- even though the GPS no longer worked.) So I can at least thank Samsung for forcing me to discover the world of custom roms.

That's a value added post if I ever saw one.
How is this not good news for the end user? A headset manufacturer giving the OK to one of the best developer teams to implement a highly popular custom ROM is a bad idea? Some people will never be happy.

It might be good news if said dev recieved a CDMA phone which is what the majority of people here would purchase. It really is irrevelent because he got a GSM phone, which really changes nothing.

It might be good news if said dev recieved a CDMA phone which is what the majority of people here would purchase. It really is irrevelent because he got a GSM phone, which really changes nothing.

Official, no. Testing, yes. Samsung could easily give a CDMA developer the device, but it'll be discreet until the carrier announcement. This was a good move by Samsung, but don't forget about the Nexus One and EVO 4G. Classy move by Samsung, but nothing HTC haven't done before and more.

Samsung is the most aggressive smartphone manufacturer right now (giving phones to dev is just a brilliant PR move if nothing else).
This ain't no Epic. SG2 marks a new era for Samsung. I've had it for 2 weeks now (with my EVO) leading up to what would have been my pending EVO 3D purchase... which will likely morph into a Sprint Within purchase at this point.
Obviously 'user experience' is highly subjective...but it seems unlikely the 3D will match this rooted, stripped SG2 experience I'm enjoying now. Fiercely fast...brilliant multimedia performance...at least compared to the 4G..

Very subjective, but I fail to agree that the 3D rooted and optimized fails to match, especially when noone has even touched the phone. The specs are too good on it not to be one of the best phones of the year, and rooted and optimized is only icing on the cake.

How is the screen on the 3d compared to a super amoled. I tried reading specs but have no idea what they mean. I just wanna be able to actually see my phone when I'm outside.

Yeah, hope your right..really do. To me it comes down to the camera quality and video quality...cause other than that the only thing it has going thats appreciatively better than my rooted gingerbread 4G!...is pixel density and that its faster.
To me the dealbreaker is how much better are its multimedia capabilities...(2D..not 3D)...cause this things (GS2) is crystalclear brilliant!

I think it's funny that Samsung can't make good software for their own phones, so they want someone else to do it for them. And for basically nothing.

How bad is the AOKP/CM9 dev for ATT Galaxy Note? Making final decision now

Hello!
So I was almost ready to buy the Note yesterday when I read that the International is getting CM9 nightlies while the ATT version is not.
So is the custom rom situation for the ATT version really that bad? As you can tell by my sig, I love tweaknig so maybe I am better off saving and buying the international one?

International version has been having a lot of bricking problems related to CWM/Kernel. We have some great AOSP/AOKP roms and devs, but a few are currently out of the picture due to bricked phones. Somewhat concerning for us USA users as there is no way initiate warranty repairs on international phones. (I've tried, no bueno)
Our CM9 version is also somewhat lacking, in my opinion. The kernel being used needs a lot of work and the phone is no where near as responsive as the other i9220 & XXLPY based roms. Unfortunately, it is the only "safe" version of ICS that we can run, currently.
AT&T version may not be a bad decision purely based on warranty. Would certainly hate to give up my exynos chip though!

hahahah all was sounding good towards going with ATT until you dropped that last statement!
So I see , its a bit of a risky device to play with compared to my Captivate.
I wonder how bad stock ICS is...at least if I can overclock it I wont feel too bad.
Is that feasible?

I'd say so I had to swap my note 3 times before i found a screen I was happy with - turned out to be an expensive endeavor. With AT&T you could just swap it under the 30 day return policy (or whatever it currently is) until you get one your happy with.

Screen you were happy with? Is there a problem with screens too? Is it something about black level issues I think I read?

Yeah, I run tablet UI on my note and it is crazy awesome.
My first screen had a few dead & unlit pixels (not super common with these phones) and the second had super bad banding. (which is common) Both may have been fine for some, but drove me bonkers.
If you do sway for the international version, id recommend purchasing a 3rd party warranty. I should have done this with my first note, but didn't know that these services existed. My current note is covered by CPS (http://www.cpscentral.com/) and was not very expensive.

Thanks for the idea mate. I will indeed do that but now I have to look for that banding because I always drool about the black levels of my Captivate so banding in anyway will make me go crazy

You're in the wrong forums, these are not the forums for the AT&T Note, being a COMPLETELY different device they have their own forums.
Personally, I would not go with any AT&T-mangled device - the I777 was the last device to receive decent development due to commonality with international devices. All subsequent devices have been severely mangled.

Well at least the captivate has been nice to me. I will look for its forum to see what the deal is with it.
Why is always the USA messing up the phones damn it.

Also, the ATT Note has LTE. That might be something you want/like if you are in an area that has LTE. I am not so I am perfectly happy with my international note.
I do feel like this thread is kind of relevant though because you are comparing the two Notes and asking about the international note.

Better user experience trumps everything, and it is better on the international Note. I played with the AT&T models but they were just so slow!

I was so set on the GS3 but then I see the monster in person and and compared them and I was like...if the GS3 will end up being a dual core in the states..or even at quadcore..I think I will get more use out of the bigger screen than quadcores except for benching lol

FWIW, I was considering a tablet previous to buying a note. The note has fulfilled that role for me as well as that of a phone. Real dual purpose device unless you have strong needs for a tiny phone or large tablet.

The N7000 is not risky at all, just DON'T do what you are NOT supposed to do. Like use a kernel with I/O bug (ICS leaks). If you want to CM9 then there is no problems with that kernel. We also have a very good MIUI port.
About the screen, no problems with mine at all, its a beautiful amoled screen.
Forget about crappy AT&T Frankensteins, and go for the Oficial Note (N7000) and enjoy what samsung design for you (Exynos )
