Heyy,
Im a huggeee android fan n was looking forward to getting an android tablet next month...before buyin i wanted to ask some questions regarding the tablet.
1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
Thanksss

Then I'd say wait it out.
If you're a huge Android fan you'd already have a Tab!
My advise is, if you can wait, wait. Personally, i've been waiting a long time for a decent Android tablet - I even bought a cheap chinese iRobot, and had a Huawei S7 on preorder (cancelled when the shipping date kept slipping).
So far, the Tab has exceeded my expectations for an Android tablet, given that the OS is supposedly "not optimized" for tablets, which is a phrase that many reviews have used, but few (if any) have actually demonstrated due to incredibly lazy journalism.

Dave

I'd like to strangle that Google exec that said that. He's done more harm to both Google and the manufacturers than he can realize.

Indeed! Just look at the comments in most of the reviews, and this invariably crops up time and time again from people who haven't even tried the Tab!
When an iPad displays an iPhone app in a "window", it's a feature of the OS that allows the tablet to take advantage of the iPhone ecosystem, yet when the Tab does the same for Android apps it's because the OS is "not optimized" for tablets.
Got to love those reviews that say that Android doesn't support the Tab's native resolution, when in actuality it supports any resolution and a well-coded app can take advantage of it. All because it's not an "official" Market resolution, which Google could "fix" by just saying that it is so!
Regards,
Dave

Couldn't have said it any better!
I've been a long time WM fan, but just got a Tab about an hour ago! cant wait to try it out properly! i used a demo at carphone warehouse and it is the ideal android device, its very quick! im new to the android world so i dont know much. but i highly recommend it!
Thanks for the help guys....i know the OS its not optimized for the device but will it support gingerbread and honeycomb or the processor is too weak for that?
Also will it support custom roms like cyanogen?
Well ive been a Windows fan for some years but ive had my galaxy tab for over a week now and i cant put it down, im really happy with it

1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
The 1ghz Hummingbird and PowerVR 540GX GPU is the most powerful single core SOC on the market right now, and it's arguably competive or superior to the Tegra 2 in graphics performance as well. It can handle 2.3 just fine, and should be good for 2.4 or whatever version number Honeycomb gets as well. Nobody can answer if Samsung will support it, but the community should have all the tools to do so as well.
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
Video calling is ok to good, same as any mobile device, but with BIGGER FACES. Qik, Tango, Fring and Skype are your current choices for software. All work best on WiFi, obviously
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
There's no REAL alternative at the moment. There's a lot of lesser alternatives (no phone, no GPS, lower quality materials, lower resolution, etc), but nothing better in this form factor. In the mobile electronics world, there's always something better coming.
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
In time, you can, because Samsung didn't lock the bootloader and they've released the source code for all the shipping variants. Just keepin mind that no Android device has custom ROM support right out of the gate, not even the vaunted Nexus One. It takes time, multiplied by sales. I should also mention that the Tab has sold nearly as many units as the Nexus One, if the reports are accurate.
Thanksss

Ok so the Vibrant is not that old but seems like its forgotten already. Well the whole Galaxy S series! Bs since its only like 4 months old. Makes me mad that android devices get left behind so fast just to be replaced so quick. Not everyone can buy a new android device every week. I love my Vibrant but this crap makes me mad! Come on SLOW down with android devices already. Just my 2 cents! And no im not a fan boy. Just wanted to get this off my mind. Thanks a million!

you don't know much about the field and business of technology do you?
The second you buy any electronic device, it is obsolete before you even walk out of the store with it. It's something you have to accept if you make any electronics purchases.

Well as long as Samsung support the current Galaxy S line with updates I will be happy, if they don't, I know I won't be buying a Samsung phone again.
Even though they keep coming out with new phones doesn't mean yours isn't good. Root that baby, flash a rom and fall in love with your phone all over again.
Yea I Know how electronics are.just think its stupid.but love my vibrant. Already rooted.just need offical froyo 2.2 and and I will be happy!

cant wait for dual core smartphones with dedicated gpu.
4.5" screen
5+mp camera w/ flash and dedicated camera button
actual hard buttons
and of course ANDROID
And of course with the same 13-1500mAh batteries these has, so we'll have like 5000 threads about terrible battery life, etc.
Personally, I don't think there is anything great about the Vibrant outside of the screen. That was Samsung's main selling point. The GPU is good, but there are now apps popping up left and right that are claiming "No Support for Samsung Galaxy S."
Yahoo Messenger for Android now has no Support for Galaxy S, Lol.
Not going to bother buying another Samsung phone anyways, but certainly not going to buy another phone with internals outside of the mainstream.
I personally view them going in another direction IRT hardware has a massive failure. That's like buying a Windows Computer with an AMD Processor, and Microsoft telling you Live Messenger isn't supported on you computer because you got AMD instead of Intel, or Microsoft Office won't run on your computer because you're running Windows Vista instead of 7, or WoW won't run on your computer because you got an ATI instead of an NVidia. Massive failure, IMO.
Apps > Hardware.
Then there's the issue of a bunch of apps simply being incompatible due to the phone only having Android 2.1...
If you expect a Nexus S or whatever to change that, then I dunno what to say. 90% of high end smartphones run Snapdragons and most don't run TouchWiz, so developers will continue to target architectures which are the majority - as they should, cause targetting Samsung's phone and ending up with apps that crash and burn on all those other phones would be utterly retarded.

Got in the site... i figured it out and didn't have to watch that whole video lol
Please tell me your not mad that technology is advancing. Really? Is it such a bad thing? Nobody is forcing you to go out and buy the newest, fastest and greatest device. Personally I think while the vibrant may lack in 2.2 and some other things like flash and a 4.3" screen or HSPA+ it more than makes up for in MONSTER graphics computing, overall speed, a beautiful 4" SAMOLED screen and a camera that takes pretty amazing pics. I did expect better support from samsung considering the phone is across all carriers However I did buy the phone as is so I cant complain too much. it still holds its own against any other device out right now. Plus... The Nexus 2 will basically be a Galaxy S so we should see easy porting to our devices once gingerbread is released and android 3.0.
Hopefully we'll see some advanced implimentation of battery technology to make these handsets last a while with usage. Cause I don't want to see another ZOMG! I got 47 hours of battery.... with everything off.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
Thing about it is, I thought about this too.. What is out that your phone can't do? It can run all the latest apps, and will even be able to support gingerbread. You could have a 5ghz phone, but what good will it do? The 1/4 second that it would be quicker would not be noticeable.
Galaxy S. Maybe the next version will include the P, so it will have a GPS~
Slow down??? Hell no! Speed up with new devices already. And the Vibrant is just fine. I use it, it has an awesome screen, and new updates get uploaded on XDA almost on a daily basis. And I love watching new phones appear. It just means that by the time I get around to another upgrade in about 14 months, the phones at that time will be that much better. So keep innovating, companies, and improving and releasing new phones.

What exactly are you talking about. No one is complaining about technology advancing. People are complaining mostly (and mostly indirectly) about the rate at which hardware/devices are deprecated and forgotten about.
Lots of people come from a long background in using computers, so they are not used to seeing a 1 year old device become "unsupported" for the most part.

Yes, those threads piss me off so much I don't even open battery threads anymore unless it's one I posted in and there's a chance a reply may be directed at me.
Most people with great battery life hardly use the phone. I get 20 hours easy when it sits there in Standby for 18.5 of those hours. Once I start using the phone, the battery is crap. I actually had to uninstall some very useful applications so the battery wouldn't commit suicide.

Yep. Actually noticed the G2 add play 3x tonight. The hinge is crap, but at least the phone works as expected.
A phone doesn't have to be "really that good" to be worth the investment. In many cases, like the Vibrant, when the phone is supposed to be "really that good" it just turns out to be a failed result of overreaching.
I got this phone because it had a lot of storage in it, and it's not like T-Mobile had that many choices when it came to high end smartphones when the Vibrant was released. Some people replying to posts act like the G2, MyTouch4G, HD7, etc. were being sold in stores in July/August.
There was the HD2, and the Vibrant. That's it. The rest of T-Mobile's phones were utter crap.

This right here. What should have been a wonderful experience has been badly sullied by non-existent support.
Buying a phone on a 2 year contract and finding out that the phone isn't even properly supported for 4 months should be enough to piss anyone off.
i know people here probaly hate apple but im ready to hear about some new projects...so is there a way to port apples ipad rom on the Tab? Has it been tried?
One day ill contribute my knowledge to the site just still learning now but doing good so far thanks guys.
btw: i love android
There are a million reasons why this would never ever work, so I wouldn't put too much thought into wanting it.
havent put much thought into it just sitting in iraq at work so random ideas for when i get done here lol
I'm trying not to be condescending, but it's still obvious to me that you haven't taken the 15-20 minutes to google the iPad and learn a bit about it, such as the fact that it's the same hardware as an iPhone, such as the fact that the software image is VERY proprietary and inflexible... like the iPhone, it's a great product for people who have no interest in a totally-customizable interface, and don't mind having to pay a few bucks a pop for every application they buy from a required application market source. If that's you, then just buy an iPad. I've played with them and they are great devices, if not as robust as an Android-based tablet is.
Unfortunately, Steve Jobs finds 7" tablets to be beneath him, so that's another limitation with an Apple tablet. And another reason why I'm interested in the GT.
And another reason why I find Jobs' sense of righteousness beneath me
As mentioned in the previous posts ios is a bit too locked down to one piece of hardware.
Android is rolling up quickly to ios. ios has some nice features like the hardware accelerated gui, but honeycomb may bring that for us too.
Android and its future developments are set to be the os of choice i think, they definately will be for those that want to tinker with things. Jobs would never allow that.

It is about as easy as installing android on your microwave.

No sense in ruining the Tab by putting iPoop on it.
Now its possible to dual boot iphones with android. Some chinese can be flash with WinCE or android. You can also put ubuntu or linux mint on you sdcard and boot it but there is very little driver support.
The problem is that the kernel/system objects on apple os is specifically for ipad unless someone wants to compiles and hack drivers.
It'd be funny to see though.
Perhaps running ios through an emu to provide the expected hardware. Probably need 2gb on the Android to emu a 1gb (maybe 512gb) ios device.
But for giggles? Sure, why not! Probably more viable to emulate an ipad without phone connection than an iphone with.
It's just digging in and getting the techy info. Can see why it'd be far easier to go the other way, with the amount of documentation/hackability of Android.
Do iPads have VNC servers on them? Might be a quick and fun hack to fool peeps that you've got it working!
Ill stick to WHY lol its just wrong.

Actually I think there is one big reason: lack of certain apps in android. I think there are many apps right now only available for iOS but not (probably never will) available in android. May be directly booting iOS is not possible, and running directly iPad app in Tab is not practical due to lower resolution, but how about iPhone app running inside an "emulator"?
I don't know, but I know there is emulator for the Garnet Palm OS inside wm5/6. It would be great to have iOS emulator or layer running on top of Android. Yes, I know I am dreaming.
Oh BTW, I am having the same case as you. Once having the tab, I have never brought my iPad outside home anymore.

Now yes this would be awesomely funny to see, but to be honest I think an iphone/ipad/ipod touch emulator for android might be easier(maybe, because I am not a dev so I am not sure.)
I just got an iPad for Christmas and i must say it is freakin cool. I have an android phone and have used many android tablets including the android powered Nook that I got for my wife this christmas. Although I am not much of an apple person, I must say that the iPad stability and response just outdoes most tablets I have played around with. At the same time though, it would be great to have widgets on my iPad screen. If this thing could run android (as snappy as it runs the iOS), it would be the perfect combo of os and hardware. Save for no camera and some other small details.
Impossible
It's not so much a hardware issue (as you may have noticed, iphones can run android perfectly fine) but it can't be done as ios is closed source so you have to buy the ipad (and then what's the point?)
Maybe back in Dec 2010 there is no prove iPad can run Android?
That is such a long time ago....

http://www.networkworld.com/news/2011/010411-galaxy-tab-wont-get-honeycomb.html
"single-core Android tablets like Samsung's Galaxy Tab won't meet the minimum requirements for Honeycomb, Google's tablet-optimized operating system version, according to a manufacturer.
Bobby Cha, managing director of Korean consumer electronics firm Enspert, told PCMag that Honeycomb will require a dual-core Cortex A9 processor to run properly. So far, the only chipset to include this processor is Nvidia's Tegra 2, due to appear in many Android tablets at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.
Cha said that a minimum screen resolution of 1280-by-720 may also be necessary, but he noted that Honeycomb-based tablets will come with seven-inch screens and larger.
Samsung's Galaxy Tab has a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor and a 1024-by-600 resolution display. The company has previously suggested that the Galaxy Tab would update no further than the smartphone-focused Android 2.3 ("Gingerbread"), but Cha's comments appear to seal the Tab's fate as a rapidly aging product."

Touche, I mean I personally am glad with my Galaxy Tab..I mean I knew what to expect when I got it...and as for honeycomb was kinda hoping but easy come easy go...but luckily even though xda didn't promise us 2.3 on our Tabs I am sure the nice devs here will try and find a way for us to get 2.3+
The false inferences from off the cuff commentary by people not directly involved in development of the OS should not be taken as factual information.
Actually Samsung has confirmed that they will release 2.3 for the Tab and Galaxy S devices. But it remains to be seen when that'll happen.

A more better homescreen thing(like instead of all 9 homescreens being left to right make them go up and down as well
default browser to take full use of the bigger screen...and word wrap of course
And would love to see a select all files to drag and drop them all at once.
Just downloaded the SDK and had a good play.
It's actually incredibly impressive.
Wasn't sure how incremental of an upgrade, but it looks like it's really taking on some great feedback and ways to improve the flow of things.
Certainly includes a fair few of the utilities we all install as standard.
Sure it'll make it (eventually) to the Tab.
Um incorrect there are no hard minimimums on Android 3.0 as tweetd by their own dev team, this is totally false.
[Moderators please delete this stupid thread.]
I love my Tab the way it is. I'd rather wait for an XDA dev created mod than expect Samsung or Google to reward us with a simple update after we made 2010 a banner year for them.

The above was written as part of an attempt to waste time using a Galaxy Tab,
Rush exMachina
so awesome when people cut and paste crap.
I myself love my gtab..barring some lockups and force closes....I use it daily as my workout device...i've gotten some odd looks but it's funny to see how many people actually try and nonchalantly glance over to watch the movie I have playing.
Unfortunately it will be short lived love affair i think...as the new G-slate is on the horizon and is superior in all ways but possibly the glass technology...i've been waiting for the tegra 2 processors ever since nvidia did their SOC demo a few years back.
all accounts i'll be taking off march 23'rd and heading to Tmo with my credit card in hand
If I can get honeycomb running fine on my tab at some point then I'm happy to keep using the same device, who knows maybe we'll get some tweaked honeycomb roms that are super smooth and amazing. I love my tab as it is though but I won't be able to justify buying a new tablet until my wife goes back to work after nursing school next year....so yea this device was my last hooray and I'll be squeezing as much out of it as I can.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 OR Wait for Tegra Three devices?
I would also allow for you to suggest other devices but please only android and please only 10 inch tablets.
Also the new tegra three devices might not be as thin or good-looking as the samsung which i really care about.
The only reason i like tegra is because of the support it has in the android app developing community so please try to keep the suggestions to tegra devices unless you have a good reason to contradict it.
This is simple for me.
If you can wait, wait.
If not go for it.
I couldn't wait
If you can wait, it means you will NEVER buy a device lol. When Tegra 3 devices come out, Tegra 4 will be announced. I passed on the galaxy tab to wait for a tegra 2 device and now I hear nvidias "Kal-El" quad core. **** it! I'm going for the Gtab!
lol might as well buy the Samsung now and then sell it once the new one you like comes out. But its true, do you really want to keep waiting? Not I, I'm jumping on June 8th.
Personally I would get one now. You can play the waiting game and never get one as there is always a better one around the corner. You can of course wait but I suspect that you won’t see many better or 4 core tablets announced until CES 2012 next year.

No, if you can wait, it means.... you can wait! I don't know about the rest of you, but I've lived my life just fine without a table. It will be a cool toy to have, but I don't NEED one. Tech gadgets are always progressing, but the tablet market is currently moving at a very fast pace. Tegra 3 is supposed to be out later this year, and is supposed to be 5x the performance. That's a much more significant performance/time ratio than other more "mature" tech products. If you can wait, then there's certainly something to be said for jumping on when the curve flattens out a little. What I do will depend a lot on pricing.
i think it's worth waiting... tegra3 pre production chips allready shipped to manyfacturers, mass production starts around august. motorola and probably asus will be releasing products short after ( promising releases before back-to-school time )
this means that you can, in theory, own a quad core beast in within 3 to 4 months months...
and they are realy fast, throw your pc and your mediaplayers out of the window and start using your tablet instead
perhaps you can invest in a program like best buy's buy back program, so when something new comes out, you can trade in your old and get the new for cheap

If you pay attention to the market it doesn't look that way. I personally think we wont see anything better then whats out now until next year. Most of these company's still need to make money off the products that are currently on the market.
Take Samsung for example, think of the time and money that has been spent building and promoting their new tablets around the world. I really don't see them coming out with any new tablets at the end of the year even if they had the new teleology. they first need to make a profit.

Asus, Motorola, and Amazon (and probably others) are all rumored to have Tegra 3 tablets by the end of the year. You can't make much money off of the products you currently have on the market if they are obsoleted by new products your competitors are offering.
I'm going to revise my initial answer.
If you're asking the question "Should I wait?". You should wait.
After the iPad released last year, I started trying to imagine, what exactly I would use a tablet for. Once I was a bit settled on what I wanted to do with it, I started looking for something that would match my needs.
When the 10.1v was announced I realised it was a match and I eagerly went after it.
Maybe you should wait until you are certain that the tablet you are buying is a match for your requirements.

lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I run the 10.1v and love it.
Things it is:
-light
-sexy (please no 3.5mm jokes)
-brilliant batery (i charge it each night but it only gets down to 30-50% after full day of use)
-netbook replacment (people will argue this but i haven't found a netbook more fun then this, and you can put debian on it )
-casual gaming (not sure of anything on the market you cannotplay onit except porley designed games that are just tiny boxs)
Things it isn't:
-high def cinema (you can run standard def fine and it looks great but if you are obsesd with 720P wait)
-ipad (yer thats a pritty good reason )
-high end device (tegra 2 is fun and all but nexus s still out performes all tegra 2 devices so if you want the bigest and best wait for qualcomm)
In conclusion if you want a great device that doesn't need to be compared to a PC (which i hate that thats were we uave goten in tablets) then go pick one up, but if your after a device that you want to luanch thermal nucular war with wait for qualcomm.
Note: bad spelling is becuase i'm dislexcic(fail i know thats wroung but cannot remember the correct spelling)

Ahh. You're more into the 30 pin connector then?
I'll stop short of making a crack about the shape of said connector
I was really looking forward to GT10.1 but no luck.
It has Tegra 2 inside which is no good for me and has no sd slot which is also no good for me.
I do want a tablet like this but I do have a purpose in getting one - it has to replace my netbook.
Meaning I want to watch 720p mkv without re encoding, netflix, etc...
So far non of the tablets (including iPad2) can do what I want.
If I would be to take one now just to have it Asus Transformer seems like a better choice.
There is an sd slot on it, there is a great dock with batt. for it and looks like it will be/is cheaper.

As far as i know, the Xoom plays 720p mkv with Moboplayer just fine. I haven't tested this myself but i have read about it in Xoom forum.
If you want, i can test this for you, just point me to a video to test.
And 3G GT10.1 has a sdcard slot.

Best advice is to go into a phone shop and have a play around with the demo devices and see what you like. There are loads of phones especially from HTC who seem to be releasing a new phone every week.
Galaxy Note or Nexus. Xperia ones are nice. But I dont trust Sony Ericsson..
Galaxy Nexus! After all its pure Google phone
If you want something different you should consider the Nokia N9. I've only tried it briefly in shop, but my god it's gorgeous.

You don't need a phone, then! You need something different! Any other phone is going to be just too simmilar to your SGS2 (which I think you should seriously reconsider fixing). Try an Open Pandora (Google it! I can't post links!), it's the closest coolest thing I can think of!
Just go buy an iPhone. You're asking if there's a better alternative to one of the best Android phones around? pfffft....our phone is a software upgrade away from being a better phone than a galaxy nexus (apart from that massive screen ofc...).
I personally think after windows 8 is released and the windows 8 tablets start flooding the market with metro ui windows phone is going to get a lot more popular too as a result. I'm waiting to see what happens but I might make the switch.
Right now i would not recommend anything for android. If you want a whole new experience, try WP7 or meego.

+1 to this.
In fact I am eying for WP 7 or furthers as my future OS. I like Microsoft and their work. If everything goes well WP will be the mostly used and popular OS within next 3-4 years.
For me it would be the Galaxy Note, it does everything the G-Nexus does, but better. All it needs is ICS. Personally I think the 5" screen is great, especially for films which I already use my GS2 for a lot.

I agree that Mango is the best mobile OS right now, but I'm not planning to replace my SGS2 any time soon. The fact is that the android ecosystem is just a lot stronger right now, everything from ROM development to app choices. ICS also looks like it makes some important strides from a quality-of-OS standpoint (though I have yet to put my hands on a Galaxy Nexus myself), so hopefully in a few months we'll see those benefits rolled into our GS2s.
I hope you're right and Windows Phone has greater traction in 3-4 years, and if it keeps going the way it's going, I may buy a windows handset in a couple years. Microsoft is still awful at marketing, though, and if average smartphone buyers know that there is something besides iPhone available, they probably have only heard of android, or maybe knew some guy who hated Windows Mobile five years ago. They've got a lot of hurdles to clear; we'll see how it goes.
To the OP: This has probably already been said to death, but the only GSM android phone that can be argued to be better than the SGS2 is the Galaxy Nexus right now. If you just want something different, I know a lot of people who like the RAZR, or you could always go for the monster of a phone that is the Note.
Having owned a nexus (ok only for a few days) i would say that the SGS2 is the better phone. Yes the Nexus has ICS and a nice screen but you are limited with Flash (ok it will come), no radio and mainly storage. I just cant live with non expandable phones with only 16gb on board. Maybe in a few months if and when the 32gb version of the nexus comes along and they have fixed flash but not now.
As shr33kant said, the SGS2 is one update (ICS) away from being a totally better phone than the Nexus.
Maybe the Note is the way forward. I have been toying with the idea myself. The screen would be massive for Video. And by the way i didnt really see / feel a difference in screen size between the SGS2 and Nexus, not sure why i didnt but i didnt.
Hope this helps.
Either the SGN or the Razr. I'd go for the latter if i were you, it seems so durable and premium...

He'll probably get board with that, so to make it interesting he has to make a random choice between 6 'chutes. One of them has a chute but no connection ropes.
Ha ha, Russian roulet sky diving!
