I love it too much!
The new phone feeling hasn't gone away and I'm two weeks in.
Just had to share...

Glad to hear, welcome to the forum
Sent from HTC Evo, the REAL iPhone killer....
Hey, most of us have had our EVOs for months and still haven't lost that fresh feeling new tech brings.
It's actually rather difficult to lose it with all the excellent ROMs and support we have access to here.
For example, I recently switched to a newer ROM that has swype. I'm suddenly addicted to writing, posting, texting, and emailing from my phone. These new interest get me looking in new places for more apps and such, and the process repeats!
-Just warming up!
The new phone shine is gone for me. I guess I need to flash a new rom or learn how to write apps or something.
You have been EVOfied.
Had mine since November, its still in my hand 24/7
Bought mine on release day and I am still finding new things to play with all the time. Most of the people here are great and willing to help and the dev's keep putting new little tweaks in the rom's.
Just signed up for dropbox, and that is awesome. And the utorrent app w/ 3.0 alpha on my desktop is amazing It seems like it is never ending!!!
Granted, this is my first android phone and before this I had a blackberry curve that was hell-bent on making me kill myself - this is the coolest device i have had in quite some time!
Cheers!
Every time I get bored with my phone I find something new to tinker with, some new program to replace an old program with or some new program to do something new and cool with my phone. Right now I'm busy learning how to automate my phone with Tasker.
lol, i must say, i'm not a big fan of "big" phones, but the EVO is technically not all that huge. i prefer slider phones, but the on screen keypad is really easy to get used to. this phone definitely rocks and should be the iphone killer. the qik application is a bit disappointing to me since the 4g is not all that great, and my g/f doesn't have a wireless router (yet), but i'm sure once i get her one, it'll be top of the game. htc and android are the best team!
P.s. I have root and don't even care to put any roms on here, the stock is great, just removed the bloat and my battery life and performance is uncanny than any other droid i've had before.
I know the feeling! I used to drive 10-20 miles down the interstate before I realized that I had left my BB at home. Now I don't make it to the kitchen without turning around and snatching it up!
Got mine at xmas...
someone help... I think I play with this thing to much...
it is affecting my other important things in life....
I need to stop...
i need to quit....
is there an app to make me put this thing down for a few hours?
ps.. I am talking about my evo!!!!
lol! let someone in your family put a lockcreen code on it lol
... but then you would probably sit for hours trying to figure it out
Best bet is to just feed the beast.
You could always use Tasker to pop up regular messages to tell you to stop playing with it or you'll wear it out.
I overheard a dude at work who is looking to get his first smartphone (on AT&T)that he was probably going to give-in and get an iPhone.
I asked him why he wanted the iPhone and he said because no other phone out there can touch it from his impression.
I asked him what it had that other phones out there didn't have and he obviously didn't do his homework yet, though he still had already developed the "desire" to get the iPhone. I know it's because of advertising, but the real thing was I couldn't nail down exactly why an Android phone would be better, or even what phone would trump it on AT&T...
The Captivate doesn't have a front facing camera which I believe is kind of necessary to really stack up against Apple's phone.
Anyone have any simple advice I can give this guy to stay away from Apple? He is obviously not that smart on phones, so I know he is adverse to custom ROMS unless I can convince him otherwise. Thanks.
Let him get what he wants unless you wanna have to hear him complain when he can't figure this or that out or if this app is not available. Less stress for you down the line. To each his own.

True, android only better if you give it a chance and willing to play around.

If he really wants the iPhone, he should get the iPhone.
If he isn't really sure what he wants, I would suggest that he go to the store and try out different phones in person. Sometimes a phone isn't what you expect when you finally get to play with it.
Also, I think if you're going to upgrade, make sure there are at least 2 phones you're interested in. In case you hate your first choice, you can take it back during the return period and exchange it for your second choice.

Thanks, good advice.
I would only try and direct him away from locking in on a contract on an iPhone that's been out 6+ months when the next iPhone is right around the corner. May as well lock in on a brand new device to get the most out of it.
He should get the iPhone. It's a great phone and perfect for people who dont know how or dont care to modify their phone.
I prefer my Vibrant and wouldnt trade it for an iPhone 4G, but thats me, and I understand that for most people out there an iPhone is better, even if only because it makes them feel good to have the fashionable bling. To each his own.
-edit-
Agree with the poster above. Convince him to wait a few months for the next iPhone.

That is the best advise possible. My coworker fell in love with my vibrant and wanted the equivalent on verizon. Since then every day there is new questions. I like helping people, but not a single day goes by wiouth something new to ask me. Be prepared for that.
I would let him know about a little phone coming out next week-ish called the Motorola Atrix w/ its dual-core awesomeness. Otherwise let him follow the cult of jobs.
I think the op just really wants to show him that there are other phones out there just as good as the iphone.
I know a co-worker of mine felt the same way and after talking with him he has now decided to go with the htc thunderbolt.
I agree with everyone else its just insane to go with a old phone when I new one is just around the corner. I swear if the 2g was still out everyone would still buy that
Thunder bolt!

its very simple and others might not like my thought process but..
iphone is for simple minded sheep, android is for smart people.
if he has his heart set on an iphone, do not try and convince him, because if you make all these arguments of android being greater (and since he does not know his way around a phone), he is going to get a captivate, probably with android 2.1 + lag + gps problems + w/e other problems it came with, and i doubt he would know how to flash a new rom etc.
Then you will be 'that bastard that convinced me to throw away $200 plus my upgrade', and then one day he will climb up you window with a chainsaw (or machete if he is not that strong) and ....
Im not going to lie but the iphone is a pretty powerful machine. Dont hold me to this but i have heard that the processor is underclocked to 1 ghz to save battery..
But the os is so locked down which makes it better in some ways and worse in others.. if you havent noticed, the iphone sets the standard for smartphones, its always "well it compares to.the iphone this.... iphone that..." .
Apple does their research right and always sets the bar for smartphones. The reason it is not customizable is so that everything will work correctly. I personally don't prefer that I can't change anything (without jailbreaking of course, which is a pain in the ass) .
I kind of have the best of both worlds with an ipod touch 4g. Its very very fast and has excellent battery life but its just so boring..
So if he's not tech savvy then tell him to wait for the next iphone. However if he is lol tell him to wait for the samsung galaxy s 2.
Sent from Bionix powered vibrant! If I helped, hit the thanks button!
Ios is so ugly compared to what we have with android. It is so busy. I never noticed until I got used to android, but now when I see someone using an iphone I can't help but think that the screen is annoyingly crammed full of icons. Who wants to look at all that junk?
Also the screen is noticably smaller
To me a 4" android screen is infinitely more plesant to use.

More to the point is a smartphone with poor support a good investment? This debacle with Samsung and Sprint has led me to an inescapable conclusion. I think it's better to get a cheapie phone and spend my money on a netbook or tablet that has a standard computer OS that is supported with updates. Sprint and Samsung along with all the other carriers and manufacturers are in the business of telecommunications. When my contract with the Epic is done I'm going back to a simple phone.
im just not interested in hauling a tab or a net/notebook around. plus always looking for wifi, or having to pay for hotspot just to power it? no thanks.
I like to know what are the ages of some of these Epic owners? All the crying about updates and Samsung this Samsung that. And when does a phone became a investment? A 401k is a good investment, stocks and bonds are investments. A phone is just that a phone, not a investment. Please enlighten me, once you get that good old 2.2 from Samsung. What are you going to do with you phone then that you haven't done yet?
I think it's a good idea, just know what features you need and what phone (or device) you need to meet your requirements and then enjoy your purchase. The "debacle" with Sprint and Samsung is barely noticeable if your epic works the way it was meant to when you bought it.

To be honest webOS is looking VERY good to me, being able to have it on my computer, printer, phone, tablet... ill be able to answer texts from all of my devices with synergy, take calls from my tab then transfer to my phone... wow. Don't let a bad experience with one particular company drive you back to a primitive 'dumb' phone! Trust me, I share your frustration; however, I believe you would be even more frustrated going back to a simple phone now that you have grown accustomed to the features of smart phone.
Wow. Unneccessarily condescending and poorly thought out post. The age of the device owner is irrelevant. When a company heavily implies and that company's sales force outright states that a particular feature(s), upgrade(s), or service(s) is imminent, then miserably fail to deliver; the owners who paid their hard earned money for the device have every right to say whatever they want. Especially when the device cost a full 20% more than every other comparable device on the market. To suggest that a phone, and I use that term loosely, is not an investment, is short-sighted at best and inflammatory at worst.

+1 to that. I'm 34, been a PC user since I was 7; and use my smartphone for everything as a Professional Driver, from Navigation to E-mailing photos of damaged freight to my dispatcher to looking up business information to our shippers and consignees. I used to have the htc mogul when it first came out and I broke the charging port about a year after I got it and didn't have the insurance. I loved that phone but couldn't afford to replace it full price since I didn't get a rebate. I got a dumb phone full price which was cheap cause I got a deal on it and I must say it was the most miserable year of my life I yerned for my smartphone back. Bad idea stick with a smartphone you will hate. The dumb phone trust me someone with experience.

Well overall I think quality of HP went way down ever since compaq merger...
The order was at different times..I know the reason why it broke after reading online...it had to do with the faulty Nvidia chipsets..and some manufacturers did tweaks to make their laptops work at least until warranty..I know HP was not the only one who did this as Dell for example I think did too..
Right now my buying policy is to buy Asus for my gaming laptops as they are the best quality..and Dell for my work laptops..Dell is junk too but I can get an inhome warranty for 2 years from dell on a deal...I work from RDP so dont care if my laptop dies as long as its replaced fast..

You don't have to wait - just try it in an experiment. Get a cheapie dumbphone (returnable) from Sprint, transfer your service, get an iPad/GalaxyTab/netbook and try it going with this combination. Not wanting to jump to preliminary conclusions, my feeling is that you will pine for the Froyo-less Epic very soon after starting the said experiment
Ok I have a few comments here...
1.) It's not like Samsung isn't supporting their device... if you're having serious functionality issues you can talk to Sprint about it and it's a supported phone.
2.) The 2.2 update has faced 101 delays but this isn't as big of a deal as most enthusiasts make it. If I asked some of the guys at work if they loaded up 2.3 on their Evo's or 2.2 or etc.. they would say "What's that?" ... when it comes out and installs OTA... they won't notice other then the phone reboots... maaaybe notice a feature here or there depending on the update.
3.) Even with 2.1 the phone works wonderfully. Yes there are bugs but thats every phone, dumb or smart, that you will buy. Most people don't buy a phone thinking I wonder when this will get Froyo... they just want a phone.. and if they are a business user they just want a smartphone with exchange support that works reliably. Samsung delivered on that for the most part.
You're still buying a top-notch phone that will serve you well.
Smartphones aren't for everyone.

Hey guys,
Ive thought about this for a while and I think I am ready to act but I want to hear some opinions from my fellow Xoom owners.
First off, I've always been an Android supporter, iOS is not an option for me.
I have an Atrix right now, and while I love it, I have always loved the idea of tablets more. I was thinking about selling my Atrix and using the money to buy a Xoom and use that as my main "Data" device. As for a phone, I'm thinking maybe blackberry or a nice text messaging phone will work fine. I'm not the kind of person who needs to be walking and looking at emails at the same time so the portability issue doesnt really bother me.
but go ahead....give me your opinions!
when honeycomb gets google voice, i think it's very possible.

Uhm...well, personally I wouldn't go for it. Only because the Android Phones right now are totally different than the Android on the tablets. The Xoom is very new and has lots of problems, but that is expected.
If you were going to do that, I would wait a bit more until it is a bit more polished. In my opinion, trading in your phone which you love and runs smoothly for a tablet that isnt showing its full color, YET! (which dont get me wrong I LOVE the tablet)
I mean, if you just CANT RESIST, then I would say go for it and get a nice phone that you can text and email and whatever else...which blackberrys are pretty good at, actually the only thing they are good at.
The choice is up to you, and I am gonna say that it is a very hard choice!
Good luck haha

the screen is one of the best thing i love about this device. when you compare it to the ipad2 specs, you can see that motorola went all out on this device.
You gotta have both phone and xoom but only have data on one device and tether. But if I were to only have one I'd stick with the phone and wait it out, the market will flood and prices will drop. The phone is just more versatile and operational for the time being. Even though I love my xoom the only thing that makes it worth 8 bills is that not everyone has it.

For me it's not a yes-no answer. I'll still have a smartphone, but it doesn't have to be a high-end model, since the heavy-lifting data use will be offloaded to a tab. I'm going to have the phone around more often than a tab, so the phone still needs some data capability.
Put another way, the phone can go on a 2-year cycle (no ETF), and the tab can be upgraded whenever, since it won't be tied to a carrier plan.
I've already made this leap. Got a Droid X at the beginning of the year but returned it at the first inkling of Tegra 2 produce, went back to my Droid. When the Xoom launched, I deactivated my Droid and got a dumbphone to go with my shiny new Xoom 3g. I'm on the 3gb plan for now but it looks like I'll be keeping it under 1gb so I'll bump down to 1gb. I bring my Xoom everywhere with me, even have an US Army map bag on the way for carrying it. Its actually become a conversation piece because everyone wants to know what this non-iPad is and what its like and such. Really glad I made the switch. I keep my Droid around as a PMP for the gym and other things but otherwise its all Xoom for me.
I own a Tablet, Netbook, Windows & Ubuntu Laptops, and Servers; but I've never owned a SmartPhone. Now that I may finally be upgrading my Verizon Plan, I need guidance.
Asking which is the best SmartPhone out there is very a very subjective and possibly contentious discussion, and if you have a hands-down favorite I want to hear about it, but more importantly I want to know which of the current VZW offerings to avoid. I figure that will be a better way to narrow the field and make my choice.
Thanks in advance,

First off it depends on what you want to do with the phone. there is never one clear cut winner. if you are looking to root, mod, flash and such. you may be interested in a completely different phone then someone looking to maximize random features and such.
my vote. you can never go wrong with a nexus. easy to unlock. root. flash. have long-term support. always a great choice. i have one. love it.
Verizon carries a lot of motorola phones. they tend to have good build quality, and lots of factory features. but be warned some are a headache to work with, and moto can be a real pain about unlocking bootloaders and such. im not down-talking moto in anyway, i have an atrix too and love it. just letting you know.
again there is not "best phone" there is a new great phone out every day. look around. read some reviews. and remember if you really cant decide. nexus is the best of ALL worlds. just remember to do some reading up on what the limitations are before you buy.
hope this can help a little.

That's a tough one because, as you mentioned, it's a very subjective issue with most people. You have a diverse set of other devices so my first question would have to deal with how badly do you need your smartphone to interact with them. What OS is on your tablet and netbook. If they're both Android I would recommend you stay with Verizon's Droid line. If they're Windows I would heavily recommend that you look at Windows Phone, namely the Trophy on Verizon. Don't get caught up in the whole "specs" conversation, go to a Verizon store and actually work the phone. Is it intuitive? Does it lag more than you would care for? How are the buttons, keyboards, etc. If this is your first smartphone I would definitely suggest you consider the "feel" of the phone and the menus, layout & screen. On another note, if you don't feel comfortable with any of their offerings, buy a good used one on ebay or Craigslist and put it on your contract. It'll be much less sour than to have to spend the next two years with a phone you hate to even look at. Hope this helps.
Once you have used the HTC EVO 3D camera you will never look at another phone again! when i take photos of my family and kids in 3d the photos just amaze me every time. when i switch to 2d and take photos the pictures are still very clear but just boring. i actually only take 3d photos now as you can edit the photo later and create a 2d copy from it. it also scored an impressive 2800 points in quadrant on a ics leak stock kernel!! im running myn without sense and it starts up only using 300mb of ram. there's 1gb ram!!!!
Well, these days I'd say the One X or Sammy Galaxy the 3rd ;o)
But the iPhone is not a dumbphone either, no? (I feel I'll get hell for this...)
I totally agree it's a complex question.
As mentioned before.try to summarize what you're going to do with it and which functions and feature are a must for you.
Keep us up on what you got in the end.
Cheers and good hunting
Thanks for all the input so far. To answer some of the questions:
I don't think I need the phone to interact with my tablet or netbook.
My tablet is a rooted ViewSonic G-Tablet with Flashback ROM
My netbook is WinXP with Ubuntu bootable from usb-stick.

This. There are great offerings coming from Sony, LG, and others before the end of the summer. You're definitely best off waiting to see what comes, and if nothing new catches your eye you'll still get an even better price on older devices once the new crop hits.

many others will suggest iphone 4s or 5, or SIII, but a good model in stores now is Sony Xperia S.

Well it looks like I'll be putting off my quest for the perfect phone for another time.
When I said I've never had a SmartPhone, that wasn't exactly true. Collecting dust in my draw for years, I've had a Mogul PPC-6800. Problem was I could never get Verizon to connect it without a data plan. They just relented and I now have it activated (with no data). Of course now that I'm using it, I'm too blind to read the damn screen.
back when I first got the Mogul, however many years ago that was, all I wanted was a PIM to replace my Palm Pilot and to be able to make Skype calls from wifi hot-spots.
Just wait for the galaxy g3 or just buy the galaxy nexus. My friend who never had a smartphone but he picked it up (gnexus) easy and now he using use all the features. If ur really really dumb, there is the iphone

I would appreciate it if you didn't copy & paste my posts and try to pass it off as "my idea". Not cool.
a google phone like the galaxy nexus will give you the best android experience since it gets its updates directly from the carriers.
unfortunately verizon hasnt updated their cdma version of the galaxy nexus since it was launched in 2011.
