Quadrants, Benchmarks & Overclocking?? What's the difference?? - Droid X General

Reading several different forums I keep seeing about quadrants & benchmarks. What are these used for?? I'm trying to get into overclocking and keep seeing about how there are several settings and adjustments needing to be made to find the "sweet spot" for my processor, does benchmark scores relate to overclocking?? Here is my benchmark:
Are these favorable results?? Would I need to overclock?? Would overclocking be beneficial??

Quadrant is a benchmark tool. It tests how quickly your phone can calculate certain types of data etc.
Overclocking is what allows you to increaSe the max speed of your processor. This will usually result in a higher quadrant or benchmark tool score.
Take care with overclocking, as you can harm your device if not done correctly

It's not too bad. Quadrant/benchmark scores aren't necessarily the best "measure" of how fast your phone is... Tweaks can be made to files to "hack" the results. In my opinion...benchmarking is more of just a bragging right for most people. If you are happy with how your phone runs, that is the important thing.
I noticed you have the framework for a Tron theme... Where did you grab that? Are you running Rubix or Apex?
(just curious...cuz I had made one, but I didn't finish the theme).

I'm not sure... I only know of jrummy's overclock... and... w.e. the other one is titled.. don't know. I would assume the one in fission is one of those two...
Someone plz correct me if I'm wrong.... (I haven't used fission).

Tron theme I grabbed from a friend who found an Apex port for DX over on droidforums. I found the Rubix link and was telling him about the theme and while looking into it he found the Apex port & using on D2 (keyboard didn't work on D2 but working fine on DX)

I use Droid Overclock off the market. Does the job well. I score 1557 @1.2Ghz on low voltage, I have not overclocked higher as 1.2ghz is not even noticable from 1 ghz. Your going purely for sythetic benchmark scores to satisfy your inner geek ocd LoL.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

nice ill try that. my phone is already wicked fast from gummyjar, but im obsessed with overclocked things

What are you using to overclock?? There's a fission one I can download from the ROM manager, I've seen in the market place one from JRummy, Unstable Apps, Milestone (free) & some joint from JPApps (QuickClock?).....which are you using & why?? Whose tried more than one overclock program & which had given you best results??

Quick Clock Advanced is my overclocker of choice. It calibrates to the lowest possible vsel hour phone can handle and then you can start from there. My current settings on quick clock.
300mhz 15vsel
600mhz 30vsel
900mhz 45vsel
1200mhz 61vsel
I maxed out at 1480mhz at 80vsel which is the highest vsel the app will safely allow.

I use. JRummy Overclock also. Currently I'm overclock to 1.25ghz low voltage. Using GummyJAR2.5. My quadrant score ranges from low 1500's to high 1600's. Some times it hits as high as 1700. I actually use Quadrant Advance Edition which actually gives you a break down of different scores in different catagories. The reason why the Quadrant score goes up when you overclock is that it will boost your score in CPU catagory/section.

[Q] Can you Overclock the Droid 2?

Hey guys, I'm kind of new to the forum. Sorry if this is a frequently asked question, but I just was wondering if you can overclock the Motorola Droid 2 and if it's even worth it. Thanks!
If we could we would. The simple answer for now is No because the Bootloader is locked so we can't flash Kernels to OC

interesting read, thanks.
But yeah, basically just get ready to hurry up and wait. People will be working on it until someone gets in.
For now you'll just have to be glad you live in the future and get to carry computers in your pocket I guess.
Does this information apply to Droid 2? Everything I see on this post looks like it refers to the Sholes (Milestone, Original Droid) and not the Droid 2 (different hardware).
Heya. I'm the developer of QuickClock, another overclocking app in the market. I was wondering if many Droid2 owners had tried it out? I've added support for a bunch of devices that I don't have direct access too, so I'm hoping to get some confirmation that it does indeed work as it should.
Thanks much,
Paul
I was going to oblige you and try out your app, but it wasn't a free app.
I'm not going to pay to beta test it for you.
Mike
If you google droid 2 overclock, there are several sites with instructions on how to do it.
Root your phone and get the Droid 2 Overclock app by JRummy16 in the android market. Only $1.50 and worth every penny.
Many options, including profiles (screen on/off, temp, etc)
Choose your voltage (Ultra low, Low, Medium, High)
Overclock up to 1.45GHz (my phone can only take 1.35GHz on ultra low voltage)
*Be careful when overclock on low voltage. DO NOT check "apply on boot" until you know your cpu can handle what you have overclocked too, or you could be facing bootloops.*

It's definitely a great app; the customization options allow you to tweak the overclocking settings exactly to your liking, and the extra features (ad blocking, memory management) are a plus.

Good lord that app has a lot of features. It's pretty funny that my D2 is faster doing things @ 300 Mhz than my Eris @ 768 Mhz.
I'm keeping mine at 1GHz max but at very low voltage. I had some trouble running Hungry Shark 2 at anything higher. I tried all voltages so I don't know what the problem is since everything else ran ok even at higher clocks.
Anyhow I like to make a profile and run the priority/threshold down low to 10 or so. Makes it real responsive to touch & fling so it feels faster even at lower maximum clocks.

I just got a new highest quadrant benchmark

I just got this on virtuous 3.1.0 with kings kernel BFS #5. This is the highest I've seen so I thought I should share.

This is 100% legit & I currently hold the highest score I've ever seen. The system im running is in my sig & has no set cpu or overclocking enabled. It has parts of the operating system stored in the RAM which has much faster I/O than NAND.
quadrant honestly doesn't mean much

G2 benchmark... numbers sucked!

Just flashed enoms g2 rom and I cleared up what I can, tried making it efficient.I ran some benchmark tests on quadrant standard and was kinda disappointed in the numbers. My bests score was low 1100 after that it was 850,900, 835... very basic stuff any suggestions???

If you ran the benchmark on battery power, try plugging the phone in. Sometimes the CPU will underclock itself to save power. If that doesn't work, download SetCPU (google it) and make sure that the max speed is set above 800 MHz.

Those scores in the OP are so low, its almost like hes underclocking or something. Or possibly a running application using a ton of resources?

If I'm averging 2500 I'm fine wit that my current settings are Enoms Rom
Using enoms cpu controls
Cpu governor: performance
Max frequency: 1,516,800
Min frequency 245,760
I dropped 3 percent in battery writing this message.... my main concern is battery and overworking the cpu.... I'm thinking about downloading set cpu and clocking the performance settings then set it for power save after a certain drop point........ does this sound logical?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
When you set your cpu to performance it means your cpu will stay at max all the time and it never goes down which is why you are getting bad battery life.
There is no need for that.
Yes you can do that with setcpu

Try to free up some RAM with a task manager, you should get about 1200 with 825 oc, I used to get 1185 yet on CM 6.x. data2ext would significally increase your I/O score. Look at my screenshot above.

apps2sd FAT, not EXT.
Data2ext is different than app2ext it completely frees up your internal storage search in the development section

The phone runs fells like it's running faster and smoother to me than it did on 2.1 with a custom kernel. Quadrant score is lower though, so does that mean my phone is slower? No. Quadrant is just a test, its results mean absolutely nothing in terms of actual performance. If it did, that'd mean that Snapdragons are the superior CPU/GPU combo, when we all know that the Hummingbird is the most advanced chip in a phone outside of the Tegra 2.

Hahaha... Too funny
Benchmarking is good for 2 things, and ONLY 2 things:
1. Comparing a device to itself with different configurations to determine performance increases (like JIT vs non-JIT, voodoo vs non-voodo, etc).
2. Comparing one device to another with the same software configuration to determine build quality, find a hardware fault, etc (i.e. 2 identical SGS phones with identical software configuration, but one scores 1,500, and the other scores 600).
Other than that, benchmarks are nothing but pissing contests where one or both participants could be aiming into the wind at any given time (no matter the situation, someone ends up all wet).
Think I found an answer for you.

same problem on my evo.... summary = newest version of quadrant is to blame.
I was getting damn near 1600 on Jt's aosp 2.2 w/o voodoo but meh
yeah i get like 943. The quandrant scores don't lie: 2.2 has slowed our phones down immensely.
