Damnit.. Gingerbread (Android 2.3) releases next week

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2010/11/05/android-2-3-gingerbread-release-november-11/
I bought the Epic to be ahead of the trend... We dont even have 2.2 yet, but 2.3 is coming out.. Who knows when that will be released for the Epic!
june 18, 2011
I upgrade phones every 6 months... so that doesnt work for me...
Plus, by that time, it will be Android 3.0 Chocolate Chip.

6 month you won't get much major progress...from the rumors all the ual cores will be coming next summer anyways..
Either way chances are you won't see Gignerbread on a phone for at least 3 month or so unless its a development phone.
that's some ****ty ass news...
I'm afraid samsung will drop support on these phones by then.
If the Nexus Two/S becomes available on Sprint (and with 4G), I'll happily dump the Epic to avoid this constant unnecessary hassle. The manufacturers and carriers are wrong, at least when it comes to me - I know what I want on a phone more than they do.
I've dealt with it on HTC and now Samsung, and I won't do it again.

No, that is some awesome inspiring news. The faster Gingerbread is released, the faster the Galaxy Tab gets gingerbread. The faster Galaxy Tab and other phones receive gingerbread, the faster it will be ported to our phone regardless of whether Samsung has official plans to port it or not.

You probably wont need to. The drivers for the Nexus S will probably work with our hardware and that should make porting gingerbread to the other galaxy S phones a lot easier. With a little luck we might have a working gingerbread before some of the HTC phones.
People are sooo negative about continued samsung support. If you are really APART of this community you have NOTHING to WORRY about. So unless you plan on staying stock quit complaining about froyo and gingerbread.

iono if i got your statement right,,, but i'd rather have a stock build of android on my epic than one thats been made over by samsung or any company for that matter. i understand that android is open and therefore if a company wants to skin or whatever with it then that up to them. it would be nice if there was an option to where we could go the a companies site ie. samsung, htc, sony; and have an option to download a vanilla build of the current os that is out. and it dosent even have to be before they release their version of it. for example with froyo 2.2 ,,, once they start to push it out to us in the states, it would be cool if we could go to sammy's site and download an alternative vanilla build. of coarse companies might say that it will take away from the phone as far as features that they built into it or want to implement. but if im paying for a device that is 100% mine, i would atleast like to have some options with it sans root and flash.
my opinion
Its not Gingerbread, more like the source....
Gingerbread being released on the The Nexus S is great news since the Nexus S is basically just another Galaxy S minus TW. Porting Gingerbread to the Galaxy S should be very easy...
LOL
With all these tasty sounding android os names the last os update will be called Fat bastard lol. or weight watchers.

Wait, so for the 99 percent of us that doesn't even have Froyo yet you are inspired by Gingerbread being released? May I please borrow your rose glasses???
2.3 is coming soon, Nexus 2 will be the first phone to get it and it's not expected to come out for another month. They site says it's 2.3 sdk, and 2.2 sdk came out a month and a half before nexus one got the official update

G1 better dev phone than vibrant!

Face it you can do things to bootloader more alt recoveries more roms oc more stable on all g1s not 95%!
Upgradeable to 2.2.1 and 2.3 already!
Port on galaxy s is a nono

Why put software updates before hardware?
The G1 was never officially upgraded beyond 1.6, and the gingerbread image we have is ripped from the emulator, you can do that for any Android device under the sun, but no one has bothered to do it for the Galaxy S.
Either way, we shouldn't need to be cooking ROMs, updates should come out in a timely manner, neither device has delivered that.

Please quit using the word "official". It seems to apply only to SERVICE PROVIDERS and not to any *truly* official source, like google.
In fact, google *DID* officially support Dream right up until 2.2, and only finally dropped support for Dream starting in 2.3... the OFFICIAL word is:

I know. I think it was pretty obvious that by 'officially upgraded' (I meant updated, that's my bad), I was referring to updates being pushed out by carriers.

Gingerbread Confimed

good find. Lets hope they realize that 2.3 is a waste and to skip to 2.4 gingerbread with dual core capabilities
If they packaged it with a bootloader unlock they could make a lot of folks long time motorola users. I love everything else about my phone. Can live with it either way but I can dream

What daveop said. As of now, I would totally be willing to go through switch carriers after this. This better be a worthwhile update (or updates, which ever is faster).
I wonder if it'll still be a Motoblur based update...
It doesn't make sense for motorola to remove blur. They actually advertised the "feature". If they remove it, lots of people will complain (not us, but we are on a different demographic)
So, don't get your hopes up, expect blur. And don't expect 2.4 either, we already know they are working on 2.3. 2.4 doesn't even have a release date yet people.

They would never just drop MotoBlur, they have probably spent a lot of time and money on it.
I just want an unlocked bootloader. The Dev's are better at maximizing the phone's potential than the manufacturers.

Holy crap. it says they will enable 1080p streaming in an update!
Maybe they will enable HDMI mirroring along with it
Hopefully by "Later this year", they don't mean December or so.
Realistically speaking if you want 2.4 on a phone, you will have to get one of the newest phones coming out - Galaxy S 2 etc. This phone wont see that until next summer at earliest.

Knowing moto, they're gonna wait as long as possible, so December 31st at 11:59pm.
However, if you live in Canada (like me), they'll give us a later date, then lie about it.
So for us it would be early q1 of 2012, but then at early q1 of 2012, the update still isn't given (this is what's happening with the milestone right now, it was suppose to get 2.2 at early q1 of 2011, and they still didn't give us 2.2, and early q1 is over already).

I do hope it comes sooner for those who really want it.
Personally speaking, and this really is personal, I'm still getting used to using Froyo as the Atrix is my first smartphone. That isn't to say I don't want the update to come soon, of course. But at least there's plenty to play around with and learn up until that point.

well that's funny, considering that when you look at what manufacturers release updates, Motorola is #2, only behind HTC.
I'm also betting AT&T will get better about updating now that iphone exclusivity is gone. I think the captivate froyo update is soon if not already around, and the Aria is getting froyo soon too.
From what i understand motorola was one of the faster manufacturers to get out updates.....anything will be better than samsung....my captivate is just now getting official froyo and its not even 2.2.1

Samsung's that bad, huh.
Yeah, from what I have read, Motorola's pretty good with their flagship devices. Comparatively of course.

Is Gingerbread finally coming to the G3?

Samsung is reportedly going to upgrade its Galaxy series of smartphones to Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform by the end of the year. The Mobile Indian quotes a Samsung executive as saying the upgrade should be available within six to eight weeks from now. According to the Samsung executive, the Gingerbread update will be rolled out for entire Galaxy series of smartphones. The development comes days after LG announced Gingerbread update (Android 2.3)for its Optimus smartphones. Sony Ericsson also started rolling out Android 2.3.4 update for its Xperia-range of smartphones.

Because htc and sony did it...
I hope so but I think that phone is too short of everything to work smoothly.
The phone could easily run gingerbread and Samsung isn't really doing it for the customers anyway. It's doing it because the optimus and xperia range of phones are all being upgraded to gingerbread and Samsung doesn't want to look like they don't care about their customers.
Well I believe that history is repeating itself
When Samsung was going to release the 2.3 update for galaxy s and other at that time it released the froyo update for us. It may be that now ICS is coming up so they want to release an update here just for the sake of name OHH WE HAVE I UPDATE FOR EVERYONE!!
let the hopes never die my friendsssss

Edit : Samsung Quotes....
Samsung is going to ensure that all Android 2.2 Froyo running smartphones — Galaxy Fit, Galaxy Pop, and Galaxy Mini will get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update before the end of this year. Apparently Samsung aims that all Android smartphones in India should run Gingerbread update

our G3 can easily run gingerbread and it will be smoother than froyo. phones with less specs are running GB
if the android os itself would be so demanding then phones wouldnt be able to handle apps on top of it.
g3 would probably be able to run icecream sandwich too but we will never be able to get it officialy.
mehh..
I have no doubt about g3 handling gingerbread, have seem the current CM7 port run on it.
but since the statement was made by an Indian Samsung executive, and clearly mentioned the newer mid-range (pop, fit and mini) that came out with the 2.2 out of the box, I am afraid samsung might decide to forget about the g3's which seem to be discontinued in the indian market, as this is clearly a strategy to sell more mid-range phones to the indian consumers, what with the launch of icecream sandwich, froyo would seem too outdated out of the box unless an update was promised.
Well no harm in remaining hopeful, but i am still taking this with a pinch of salt.
Dont think that gingerbread is going to come.... froyo update took much longer to come than promised and if gingerbread is going to come, it'll probably b very late
I believe Samsung will only release gingerbread to the galaxy phones that are currently being sold (tab, ace, mini and such), not to the old ones (3, 5...).
But even so, maybe it is still of some use if developers can put their hands on some drivers for hardware in those models that were also used on the old ones.
Does this mean we will get touchwiz 4.0? It is so much better than the crappy one we have and it's a lot faster and hardly any lag.

Seeing as I have an unlocked/unbranded handset, hopefully won't be too long a wait either
Love you Sony Ericsson, I have an unbranded UK r800i model so I'm hoping the wait isn't that long...
To be honest I never expected them to announce this until 2020.

It's interesting that they will be updating the low end (and low res) devices like the minis and the Live. There are lots of apps which don't support those resolutions anymore, isn't there?
That's one of the big reasons I think the American system is flawed, regarding to their (your) own different models of the same phone. In the end it's you as the customer that has to pay the price.
Not to say its confirmed you won't get it either. But doesn't sound like you have much faith in them (Verizon).
I realize this can be an issue in the rest of the world too depending on what manufacturer you have on the phone and their policy of updates (or lack of them). But it's not quite the same as companies demanding different hardware and stuff for their model of the same phone creating even more issues for customers.
VZW managed to get Froyo to the LG Ally, one of the worst Android phones, so I think we will get it. Pretty positive about that, if not, there is always XDA
Never expected "Live" to get it. But oh well, We won't get 4.1, thats the time I flash a custom rom.

Anyone know the pro and cons of using ics over gingerbread?
Lol, Ics isn't even released in the Nexus yet. Give it some time to see how it works in real life. Eventually the idea is that Ics is an improvement over Gingerbread, so there shouldn't be any cons.
