I'm not much of a dev, but I'll be dabbling on trying to get it to at least compile. I mostly build stuff for my own personal use. I'm sure someone will beat me to the punch anyway since I work more than I would like to
Your best bet is either jaybob (he seems to be just a cyanogen builder) or aosp. I think besides the previous two I mentioned and nfinitefx45 there are no other real public ROM devs left for our phone.

3.0 is probably going to be the one that has more of a UI change, pretty sure it was at least semi-confirmed a while ago that 2.3 wouldn't be a drastic change.

Yeah I read somewhere about one of the tablet makers saying that they weren't gonna release their tablet till honeycomb comes out because 2.3 isn't much of an upgrade. I just was hoping.

To be fair though, .1 updates are never huge upgrades, just have back-updates and various new features that generally aren't massive (1.5 > 1.6, 2.0 > 2.1, 2.1 > 2.2, etc etc). The tablet remark makes sense, because if what's been said on various tech sites in the past is true, 3.0 will be made with tablets in mind, as opposed to 2.2/.3, which are not really optimized for tablets at all. Personally, I'm a bit excited to see what happens with NFC, as I am sort of into the idea of never carrying a credit card again.
Does 2.3 have requirements? I heard that either 2.3 or 3.0 will but I think its gonna be 3.0 since its a .7 update instead of a .1 update.

This isn't always the case but in general naming practice the code base for a X.1, X.2, X.3, X.N, series of a program are the same and the revision steps are bug fixes and maybe small upgrades. When a name changes from 1.X to 2.X that usually indicates a major revision to the base code such as a rewrite.
Such as, 1.5 to 1.6, minor step, few new goodies mostly bug fixes, 1.6 to 2.1, major jump tons of changes and bug fixes, 2.1 to 2.2, mostly bug fixes but also included major Dalvek VM upgrade, the step from 2.2.1 to 2.3 is mostly bug fixes and a few updates. The next major revision should be 3.0 and from what I have read and heard it will have a major focus on larger format applications beyond cell phones such as Tablets and Media devises such as Tv's and Google Tv.
well the evo devs are already working on a rom for us. glad i bought an evo when i did. i don't think the hero can handle 2.3.

It's all speculation. Google tends to stay pretty tight until they have a press conference or release party. Look at FroYo - it was a total surprise to wake up and find that they where dropping source into the tree.
The blog-o-sphere refers to Gingerbread as 3.0. I believe that Google has round-about-ly confirmed that the name is in fact "GingerBread", but we won't have a version number till they drop source in the tree again around November. Judging from the speculated improvements, it should be a major version number change.

My guess is 2.3 is correct, jumping a full revision number such as to 3.0 would generally indicate a partial or complete rewrite of the core code.

3.0 is what the version info says - given its just a screen shot and leaks are hardly ever trust worthy, but i like drama.
I'm still going with 3.0 and not 2.3....
I actually kinda wish that Google would slow down a little. I'm scared to buy a new phone if it's going to be outdated in three months when Google puts out something new. I guess that's why we donate to our developers!

Google has said that they will be slowing down after GingerBread(regardless of the version number). My assumption is they did not expect such rapid growth of the platform and users need a fully functional OS to make it worth buying into - A phone any more is not a quick purchase, there is a lot of investment in hardware and software. Where as with feature phones they where cheap(in comparison) and easily replaceable.
From what I remember seeing, the next update is to have some big changes making it most likely 3.0. All speculation though.
Personally I'm happy android has been updating quick. Keeps the phones newer fresher feeling longer and fixes problems quicker. I came from winmo and never got fixes and the roms bored me. Plus I really hated 6.5.
I'm holding out until December to upgrade and debate on new phone or used evo. I've been out of contract for 9 months now.

Somebody probably changed the build.prop or something.
Well the last craze to get updated to Froyo seems as though it may end up being short lived as I came across this today: http://www.androidcodex.com/gingerb...edium=rss&utm_camp aign=gingerbread-is-coming
2 months for a GB release, then we wait for root (which might be very quick) and/or wait for HTC to Sense-ify GB, then we get it on the Evo. Froyo's got a few months left in it - about as long as Eclair had on the Evo.
Or maybe it will live up to the hype and HTC will leave it alone and just push it without a new UI.
Personally, I can't wait for 3.0. I'm really hoping it comes a lot closer to being as nice looking and easy to use as iOS. I came from an iPhone and loved it, but I love Android a little bit more; I don't know why I like it more, but I do, however, the apps are really ****ty when compared to iOS and the UI is pretty rough in some areas - sense or aosp.
Google really needs to step it up and hire some graphic designers that can't code at all.
Whoot Whoot !!!
bring it on Google

I think the statement was that Google was aiming for UI that was nice enough to DISCOURAGE manufacturers from layering their own environment over the top, which would hopefully save resources.

No, we're getting Froyo ... beta has already leaked if you haven't noticed. Official version from Samsung / Sprint should be out sometime in the near future. Don't get your hopes up with Gingerbread because we won't see that on the Epics for quite a while.
Yep. Like I said in the froyo leak forum, any person phone-geeky enough to be hanging out in XDA will probably have a different phone by the time Gingerbread hits the Epic.
However someone did make a good point in that the Nexus S will have gingerbread and since that's a Galaxy S phone it will hopefully be easy to port over to the Epic.

That was me who said that, and I haven't yet seen anyone argue that it wouldn't be possible....
While the coming update is undoubtedly Froyo, I think it's only a matter of time before we'll have 2.3. Considering the new Nexus is the "Nexus S" from Samsung and looks to basically be another Galaxy S variant, I think ports will happen.
The Nexus S is not a CDMA phone so the port will take a bit or time, unless the 2.2 kernel works out of the box with 2.3.
It's possible but don't expect instant gratification.
Also shouldn't this be in general?

Honeycomb is going to be 3.0
Epic experience + Phoenix kernel + Emotionless beast = Great functionality, Exceptional battery life, and Sweet eye candy.
2.3 would have to be released to the devs at the handset manufacturers so they could customize it for their phones (load it with their crap bloatware, custom interface, etc.....). As we have seen, that takes time (2.2 has been out for a while now). If we were to see 2.3, it would probably be 6 months from now, about the time 2.4 or 3.0 (they should call it Poundcake.....good name, and good Van Halen song) is coming out.
I don't think our handsets will ever see 2.3 at this rate. It will be another year into the future before we see it, and by then our phones won't even be powerful enough to make phone calls.
Oh we will definitely see 2.3 on the epic even if it has to be unofficially brought to us ;-)

This is exactly why I am so excited about the Nexus S. In the same way that the Nexus One gave the Incredible, the Evo 4G and the other HTC devices amazing hacking potential, the Nexus S will make our Galaxy S phones way way better.
More developers will be working on this platform, and we will have all the google stuff working on hardware that is 99% the same. Really, the only thing different will be the CDMA/4G radios, but that is just minor stuff since that is the only difference between the Nexus One and the Evo. Also, the Epic Experience ROM is full of stuff taken off of other Galaxy S devices and it all works great.
Also, I'm going to say that this phone is not dual core. It might have a 1.2ghz hummingbird, but thats the only thing that might be different. It might also have some filesystem stuff that is different but we can hack around all of that. Hopefully it is using the same GPS chip though, because Google will then really light a fire under Samsung to make sure they fix it once and for all.

GB with Sense 1.0 is going to feel exactly like Froyo with Sense 1.0 so what exactly is there to get excited about?
When my friends ask what is different with the EVO 3d to the EVO I don't even mention GB as there really is nothing different. It is more comparable to what a service pack is for Windows then an actual OS update. So you get some green color on top and an off animation.....
GB should have been just another number added to Froyo.

If I agreed with you any more than I do now, then we'd be the same person.
I never understood the obsession with GB... I saw literally NO CHANGE when CM7 made the jump... Nor did I see a difference between 2.3.2 .3 or .4
The only reason I want the 3D is for the dual cameras and other upgraded hardware. I am hoping that someone can make use of the cameras for something magical... like sensing depth, or doing instant HDR photos... things of that nature. Maybe even building 3D models, like with a Kinect.

I'm not sure why you are being such a hater. Nonetheless, This will allow me to use some of the other ports that are floating around such as Virus's Sense 3.0 and Miks GB Sense 2.1, etc. In addition, there are a few apps that I run that do not restore successfully from GB to Froyo thus, if I want to keep my data for said apps than I need to run them on a GB ROM. I see your point though, we should just be anti-updates unless they include huge ground-breaking changes... I'm sure Google isn't rolling out updates for ****s and giggles, so why not take advantage of some of the improvements that have been made. They may not be cosmetic, but GB is still an improvement over Froyo.

I am all for updates but I just don't get the excitement over this one, that's all. Like I said before, Gingerbread just feels like a service pack release.
If HTC maybe threw Sense 2.0 on it, then it might have felt like something changed at least.
+1
Now with the ota gingerbread, it will also be easier to squeeze in sense 3.0 or whatever. I have the screen from hell and can't run these newer ports because there is no way in hell to go all day with out charging.

Maybe?
Anyway, are you unrooting because you are trading in your EVO to a store? I was trying to see if anyone knew if we needed to do that or if we can just put a stock Rom on and leave it rooted.
