Got proof?
Last I heard it was assumed that 3.0 was GingerBread. I remember a time when 2.1 was Flan.

It's all speculation. Google tends to stay pretty tight until they have a press conference or release party. Look at FroYo - it was a total surprise to wake up and find that they where dropping source into the tree.
The blog-o-sphere refers to Gingerbread as 3.0. I believe that Google has round-about-ly confirmed that the name is in fact "GingerBread", but we won't have a version number till they drop source in the tree again around November. Judging from the speculated improvements, it should be a major version number change.

My guess is 2.3 is correct, jumping a full revision number such as to 3.0 would generally indicate a partial or complete rewrite of the core code.

3.0 is what the version info says - given its just a screen shot and leaks are hardly ever trust worthy, but i like drama.

I'm still going with 3.0 and not 2.3....

I actually kinda wish that Google would slow down a little. I'm scared to buy a new phone if it's going to be outdated in three months when Google puts out something new. I guess that's why we donate to our developers!

Google has said that they will be slowing down after GingerBread(regardless of the version number). My assumption is they did not expect such rapid growth of the platform and users need a fully functional OS to make it worth buying into - A phone any more is not a quick purchase, there is a lot of investment in hardware and software. Where as with feature phones they where cheap(in comparison) and easily replaceable.

From what I remember seeing, the next update is to have some big changes making it most likely 3.0. All speculation though.
Personally I'm happy android has been updating quick. Keeps the phones newer fresher feeling longer and fixes problems quicker. I came from winmo and never got fixes and the roms bored me. Plus I really hated 6.5.
I'm holding out until December to upgrade and debate on new phone or used evo. I've been out of contract for 9 months now.

2.3????

guesses? rumors? news? anyone? lots of hype about this. but it kinda seems like vibrant is gonna get left in the dust seeing as how we are still on 2.1. from what i have been reading, 2.3 (gingerbread) will be out within a week! so us vibrant users will be 2 versions behind! (wtf tmo and samsung?) my thoughts are maybe they didnt update us cuz they where just waiting for 2.3 to come out and wanted to get all the updating done at once. but i do kinda live in a fantasy world (drugs are bad mmmkay) so what are the thought from the fine folks here at xda on this matter?

Jk2 is a build number of the most recent (and most important since its specifically for vibrants) froyo. Before this all the froyo roms out has been built off of other variations on diff models/carrier.
The fact that jk2 was leaked means the official ota for all tmobile customers is real and immenent.

I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3. Samsung will probably release 2.2 somewhere between 2-4 months behind the competition. That doesn't give me great hope that we'll ever seen 2.3. Figure that it took HTC/Motorola 2-3 months to turn 2.2 final into 2.2 custom versions to OTA, then we are looking at 4-7 months from now for 2.3 if all of the same timeframes hold. That's probably past the window that this phone will receive official updates.
well seems like the ported versions of the firmware updates have problems, like the headphone jack not working. or gps lagging ect. (not to say the developers didnt do a good job{ cuz they did an awesome job}) but i use that stuff lots. i agree with lex tho. i think that we will probly stop geting updates after awhile so that the newer more awesome phones can get bought up.

mmmm im thinkin honeycomb (3.0) will be out within a year. prob not for our phones tho. we will have to upgrade to the we will have to upgrade to the galaxy t hahaha
2.3 won't be that different
2.3 won't be that different It will change the resolution mainly to allow a bigger screen Right now 2.2 really can only function on a 7 inch screen without some mods so 2.3 will have that integrated. 3.0 will have real differences, but Vibrant has become the developers phone of choice so, you will see that on the phone as soon as it gets out.

it is no more official than any of the others that are out.
I doubt it will take that long. Look, the Galaxy S took a while because these are the first phones using the Hummingbird CPU. People say HTC and Motorola are more on the ball, but they're using the same Snapdragon and OMAP cores since the beginning. Heck, Froyo was originally built for the Snapdragon--no wonder Froyo is easy to port to those phones.
Now they've got Froyo on the Hummingbird, I would think future releases will be easier to port based on the accumulated experience.

No. Froyo was pushed to the nexus one in late june.
HTC/Motorola pushed it 2-3 months after that and samsung will wind up another 2-4 months after that, depending on when they finally push it.
2.3 will be pushed any day now to the nexus one, so you can do the math from there if you assume the same timeline. My guess its that pushes 2.3 out of the window for the upgrade.
Guys.. Froyo should be out before Christmas. Team Whiskey and Eugene already got it. And tmobile is sending OTA to people with JI6 to downgrade back to JFD. They're preparing peoples phones.
Okay, we have froyo, now we are set... OH WAIT GINGERBREAD IS COMING OUT I AM NEVER HAPPY OTHER PHONES WILL HAVE IT BEFORE ME CRY CRY CRY CRY.
Seriously, I can assure you gingerbread is not going to come out this year.
And the N1 is the dev phone so of course it's going to be first to snatch up the latests firmware.
Heck, samsung or tmobile DIDNT PROMISE YOU ANY UPDATES. You bought the phone and that is it. They have your money, what are you going to do know? Didn't you check on the behold? I think they are stuck on 1.6 same as the Cliq. BE HPPY you got froyo.

'na man! you want the vibrant' i love my vibrant. but i also am gonna want 4g and firmware updates in the future.

No, we're getting Froyo ... beta has already leaked if you haven't noticed. Official version from Samsung / Sprint should be out sometime in the near future. Don't get your hopes up with Gingerbread because we won't see that on the Epics for quite a while.
Yep. Like I said in the froyo leak forum, any person phone-geeky enough to be hanging out in XDA will probably have a different phone by the time Gingerbread hits the Epic.
However someone did make a good point in that the Nexus S will have gingerbread and since that's a Galaxy S phone it will hopefully be easy to port over to the Epic.

That was me who said that, and I haven't yet seen anyone argue that it wouldn't be possible....
While the coming update is undoubtedly Froyo, I think it's only a matter of time before we'll have 2.3. Considering the new Nexus is the "Nexus S" from Samsung and looks to basically be another Galaxy S variant, I think ports will happen.
The Nexus S is not a CDMA phone so the port will take a bit or time, unless the 2.2 kernel works out of the box with 2.3.
It's possible but don't expect instant gratification.
Also shouldn't this be in general?

Honeycomb is going to be 3.0
Epic experience + Phoenix kernel + Emotionless beast = Great functionality, Exceptional battery life, and Sweet eye candy.
2.3 would have to be released to the devs at the handset manufacturers so they could customize it for their phones (load it with their crap bloatware, custom interface, etc.....). As we have seen, that takes time (2.2 has been out for a while now). If we were to see 2.3, it would probably be 6 months from now, about the time 2.4 or 3.0 (they should call it Poundcake.....good name, and good Van Halen song) is coming out.
I don't think our handsets will ever see 2.3 at this rate. It will be another year into the future before we see it, and by then our phones won't even be powerful enough to make phone calls.
Oh we will definitely see 2.3 on the epic even if it has to be unofficially brought to us ;-)

This is exactly why I am so excited about the Nexus S. In the same way that the Nexus One gave the Incredible, the Evo 4G and the other HTC devices amazing hacking potential, the Nexus S will make our Galaxy S phones way way better.
More developers will be working on this platform, and we will have all the google stuff working on hardware that is 99% the same. Really, the only thing different will be the CDMA/4G radios, but that is just minor stuff since that is the only difference between the Nexus One and the Evo. Also, the Epic Experience ROM is full of stuff taken off of other Galaxy S devices and it all works great.
Also, I'm going to say that this phone is not dual core. It might have a 1.2ghz hummingbird, but thats the only thing that might be different. It might also have some filesystem stuff that is different but we can hack around all of that. Hopefully it is using the same GPS chip though, because Google will then really light a fire under Samsung to make sure they fix it once and for all.

Your best bet is either jaybob (he seems to be just a cyanogen builder) or aosp. I think besides the previous two I mentioned and nfinitefx45 there are no other real public ROM devs left for our phone.

To be fair though, .1 updates are never huge upgrades, just have back-updates and various new features that generally aren't massive (1.5 > 1.6, 2.0 > 2.1, 2.1 > 2.2, etc etc). The tablet remark makes sense, because if what's been said on various tech sites in the past is true, 3.0 will be made with tablets in mind, as opposed to 2.2/.3, which are not really optimized for tablets at all. Personally, I'm a bit excited to see what happens with NFC, as I am sort of into the idea of never carrying a credit card again.
Does 2.3 have requirements? I heard that either 2.3 or 3.0 will but I think its gonna be 3.0 since its a .7 update instead of a .1 update.

This isn't always the case but in general naming practice the code base for a X.1, X.2, X.3, X.N, series of a program are the same and the revision steps are bug fixes and maybe small upgrades. When a name changes from 1.X to 2.X that usually indicates a major revision to the base code such as a rewrite.
Such as, 1.5 to 1.6, minor step, few new goodies mostly bug fixes, 1.6 to 2.1, major jump tons of changes and bug fixes, 2.1 to 2.2, mostly bug fixes but also included major Dalvek VM upgrade, the step from 2.2.1 to 2.3 is mostly bug fixes and a few updates. The next major revision should be 3.0 and from what I have read and heard it will have a major focus on larger format applications beyond cell phones such as Tablets and Media devises such as Tv's and Google Tv.
well the evo devs are already working on a rom for us. glad i bought an evo when i did. i don't think the hero can handle 2.3.

My understanding is that the Nexus S (like the Nexus One) is a stripped down, super-phone, demonstration of new technology and in this case the most notable difference would be the form factor and the NFC. I think Sammy would face more backlash from consumers for ignoring hardware customers already paid for so as to make a new product with near-identical hardware better.
I would assume to have a 2.3 powerhouse phone on all major carriers for bragging and sales purposes. Would make a ton of sense.

Personally, I'd never heard of him but I've requested to follow him on twitter. In the end we'll just have to wait and see but it would be nice. If this update were coming soon I think there would be some RCs floating around but seeing as we have Froyo ones and a 'near-official' OTA update that went to .4 phones its hard to know if we'll skip 2.2 and go right to 2.3. I want this to happen but the evidence I have right now would seem to go against this.
I honestly though don't care about gingerbread all that much. I'm planning to have this phone for awhile. It does everything I need with ease. Big difference from when I had the Moment and from day 1 felt the need to smash it into a wall because of how slow and laggy it was. I would hope samsung realizes this isn't a phone to cut ties with because it defintely has staying power even after it's superceded by something faster on paper but probably only marginably faster in real world use.

With how good samsung did with sales from all the galaxy s phones, i wouldnt be surprised that they would do this.. that would be so sweet to have gingerbread on epic and since its on the nexus s with samehardware screen and stats, makes sense they could upgrade all variants epic will definitly be the top of the line if it got gingerbread, but also i agree with the poster above about caring less as long as i have a good running phone with 2.2 ill be set til the dual core processors come out and another top of the line phone comes out for sprint next year or 2 years,

I want this to happen but the evidence I have right now would seem to go against this.

I agree, its better to wait and see. I would rather not get myself excited only t be disappointed in the end. The best i could see out of this is samsung releasing gingerbread much earlier then any of us would expect. I don't know...lets just see.

I would have to agree with you. It would be nice, and it would increase following among sammy, but will it be released soon? At this point, possibly but not probably.

Indeed. I spent months reading about how my Mytouch was getting Eclair only to be let down every time. I will say that if they do leapfrog 2.2 and get my device up-to-android-date then when I buy my fiancee's new phone in about a month she'll be getting a Sammy device. Otherwise, I'm not going to get her a phone that's always out-of-date.
Now if we dont receive an update b4 january first for anything this might prove that we will have gingerbread later and prove that they skipped froyo.
I mean if they dont give us froyo b4 the end of the year like they promised, they could be working on gingerbread we shall see by the end of this month.
The only thing I am not looking forward to is the possible return of these forums turning into unreadable garbage of people trolling, fighting and starting multiple threads about when or why Gingerbread is/isn't on the epic.
This thread has been nice though.

;-) np .... Hopefully we could keep most gingerbread talk here. After all, anything we hear to this point are only to be considered rumors.

galaxy s gets gingerbread before atrix?

http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/16/...pdate-now-rolling-out-across-europe/#comments
kinda sad that a phone thats been out for almost a year is getting gingerbread before the atrix. i think its ATT's fault. they seem to delay OS updates, at least they did for the captivate. both rogers and bell got froyo months before att. maybe ATT wants to make sure all the features it wants disabled are in working like wifi hotspot?
True. Im already regretting buying my Atrix, too late to return it though. But also Motorola was asking for beta testers to sign up to test 2.3.

Looks like this is for unbranded galaxy s phones though. In the US it takes longer cause the carriers are modding the OS to add all their useless bloatware crappola an it's usually the carrier that pushes the updates not the manufacturer. But hopefully with the update to enable hsupa we get a couple of extra goodies.

motorola is getting beta testers for gingerbread? did they put up a sign up like for the update or just announce it?
Motor is asking for beta testers? If so...then GB will be released

it makes sense that the phone that's been out for a year gets it first....
since google released the 2.3 source code, the company has been doing nothing but preparing an update most likely. motorola however, needed to iron out kinks in their initial 2.2 release before they can consider developing a 2.3 OS, and then allowing carriers to modify it to your liking.
obviously you didn't think about what has to be done to come up with a polished 2.3 update before it can be released as an official OTA update. you really can't fault motorola for this not being out yet. it takes a lot of time, testing, and effort to release a finished product.
Raybond, I agree with everything you said, but its hard to cut Motorola any slack for this when the phone should have come with 2.3 in the first place. On top of that they lock the bootloader so we cant get 2.3 working on our own either....

well, the problem is that they probably started dev for the atrix's OS before 2.3 was released, so it would have been even more work, and probably would have caused delays in their release of the phone if they had shipped it with 2.3
I know locked bootloader is a massive drag for 3rd party dev, but you really can't fault moto for any decisions they've made with this phone other than that.

I guess this is the price we pay for having a subsidized drvice. Unfortunately... although we pay double for it in years of service.

not really, you are going to be paying a carrier either way just without a contract. the cost of the subsidy doesnt get added to your bill. either this or buy a phone for full price like in europe.
i read that google is going to be releasing ice cream sandwich sometime this summer. maybe motorola is going to skip gingerbread? i wouldnt mind waiting until the end of the year if it means we get 2.4.

You would have to skip over "Gingerbread" AND "Honeycomb" to get to ICS.
That's not gonna happen...

Yes moto does.
I read it on moto official forum.
And you need to fill a form or something before a date...
I would if my phone wasn't unlocked..

EDIT:
My fault!!!! Sorry guys!!!
I didn't read the whole post from moto forum. At the end of that post there is an edit, that says it was about the 1.5.7 update we already got! My mistake, my fault, sorry

actually you're not skipping honeycomb....
honeycomb is a totally different series in Android OS, tablet-specific series to be precise (3.0)
So, gingerbread is 2.3, and ICS is 2.4. Also, rumour has it that ICS will have full dual-core support, so it would make logical sense for Moto to not waste any time with 2.3 and go straight for dev in 2.4

ice creme sandwich is a blend features of both gingerbread and honeycomb made specifically for phones. you will not be seeing honeycomb on an android phone backed by google. that one reason google is not releasing honeycomb source yet, they dont want to have honeycomb phones out there.

i believe that it has some modicum of support for dual core, but is not completely optimized for it as 2.4 will be.
that's just my understanding, if someone could provide a link to prove me wrong then i'd freely accept it.
Gingerbread as currently released for SGS has some glitches but guess what Samsung just released the source code! So we should be seeing fixes and tricked out kernels/ROMS/system apps very soon.

I saw the signup sheet too. It never hurts to waste a little time each day looking through these forums. I swear I saw a link for it. I looked at it and saw some sign up thingy on Motorola's website.
