Froyo's out Gingerbread is in - EVO 4G General

Well the last craze to get updated to Froyo seems as though it may end up being short lived as I came across this today: http://www.androidcodex.com/gingerb...edium=rss&utm_camp aign=gingerbread-is-coming

2 months for a GB release, then we wait for root (which might be very quick) and/or wait for HTC to Sense-ify GB, then we get it on the Evo. Froyo's got a few months left in it - about as long as Eclair had on the Evo.
Or maybe it will live up to the hype and HTC will leave it alone and just push it without a new UI.

Personally, I can't wait for 3.0. I'm really hoping it comes a lot closer to being as nice looking and easy to use as iOS. I came from an iPhone and loved it, but I love Android a little bit more; I don't know why I like it more, but I do, however, the apps are really ****ty when compared to iOS and the UI is pretty rough in some areas - sense or aosp.
Google really needs to step it up and hire some graphic designers that can't code at all.

Whoot Whoot !!!
bring it on Google

that's pretty cool. I wonder where they got their sources from though? I really would like to see what kind of UI google puts on gingerbread though. And of course, whether or not motorola/HTC/samsung will still blur/sense/touchwiz it...

I read from a few places that Gingerbread would do away with 3rd party UI's like Sense. It would have to be pretty fricken sweet to get me away from Froyo Sense. I mean, how much faster could it get?

very cool, maybe ill finally upgrade from the original htc 2.1 rom to GB when it comes out!

Dang it...I saw no mention of "smoother UI experience". The only thing that really bothers me is how choppy the interface is despite a 1Ghz CPU.

More than 30fps will never be part of the evo, htc has said many times that its a HARDWARE limitation, they lied for a reason. To cover their ass. I dont see them exposing their own lie, ever.

I think the statement was that Google was aiming for UI that was nice enough to DISCOURAGE manufacturers from layering their own environment over the top, which would hopefully save resources.
But read this.

Even if we don't get it from HTC (unlikely) with the dev's we have, I'm sure the evo will run gingerbread one way or another... if the g1 can run froyo... anything can happen

Some dev with port it if anything... I don't see why we wouldn't get it. The phone meets the specs and I don't see them abandoning the EVO so quickly.

It's all speculation. Google tends to stay pretty tight until they have a press conference or release party. Look at FroYo - it was a total surprise to wake up and find that they where dropping source into the tree.
The blog-o-sphere refers to Gingerbread as 3.0. I believe that Google has round-about-ly confirmed that the name is in fact "GingerBread", but we won't have a version number till they drop source in the tree again around November. Judging from the speculated improvements, it should be a major version number change.

My guess is 2.3 is correct, jumping a full revision number such as to 3.0 would generally indicate a partial or complete rewrite of the core code.

Google has said that they will be slowing down after GingerBread(regardless of the version number). My assumption is they did not expect such rapid growth of the platform and users need a fully functional OS to make it worth buying into - A phone any more is not a quick purchase, there is a lot of investment in hardware and software. Where as with feature phones they where cheap(in comparison) and easily replaceable.
From what I remember seeing, the next update is to have some big changes making it most likely 3.0. All speculation though.
Personally I'm happy android has been updating quick. Keeps the phones newer fresher feeling longer and fixes problems quicker. I came from winmo and never got fixes and the roms bored me. Plus I really hated 6.5.
I'm holding out until December to upgrade and debate on new phone or used evo. I've been out of contract for 9 months now.

2.2 With SenseUI Aug 3!!

"Google" The EVO Update As I'm Not Allowed to post links.. BOO.
The EVO gets 2.2 presumably with the SenseUI on August 3rd.. When this is released is there any chance that we will see this flavor of custom rom for our Hero devices?! Hopefully Darch and the other XDA experts wont let us go without.. We can ONLY HOPE!! Hint, Hint, Nudge, Nudge.. Surprised there isn't a leak already.. Or is there!?
There is, i am running full 2.2 100% working on my Evo, and HTC also posted the update.zip on their website, but Devs from the Evo have had sense working for awhile now, but it still hasn't been ported over because of the huge differences in frameworks
I really wish I knew what people liked about SenseUI. It just seems so bulky and slow to me.
darchstar told me many times tonight there will be no 2.2 sense port for the hero. (from the evo) the arch is different
Nfinitefx45 will be working on porting 2.2 sense here soon

Thanks for the info!
I flipped through the EVO dev forum (reluctantly) and saw that they are already up and running on the latest froyo build which is awesome! I'm glad to see that all hope is not lost and that there will be some development for 2.2 with sense. To answer Zardos66 I personally like the facebook contact linking and the look of the UI. It has nothing to do with performance and everything to do with functionality and usefulness. The SenseUI is a bit clunky but I haven't found a happy medium with any of the roms that don't have the SenseUI. Just something I'd like to see and If it can be done I trust that the XDA Pros will knock it out of the park.. I'm very excited to see what can be made of this!! XDA FTW!

Even with OC, Sense still lags. It's is easy to mimic with less ram taken up.
Launcher pro
2x4 people widget - free
Messaging Widgets - free
Weather and toggle widgets - $1.99
feels good man.
Supposedly we can't port the EVO 2.2 release over to the Hero because the EVO build is designed for a much faster processor. Our Hero couldn't handle such a port without A LOT of tweaking....in other words, almost impossible.
Whenever the HTC Legend gets their 2.2 release, that is probably the build that the devs here will try to port over for us. A couple people have already committed to doing this.

Darch released RC0 a few builds ago, i am currently running Not my dog too build and all is pretty well. Camera app is still pretty much useless but Camera Magic is a quick fix. the bottom line is the hero should of got the 2.2 update. sprint isn't doing a good job of supporting their phones at all. i owned the evo for a week and while i liked the speed & size the pitfall was the battery life. none of the tweaks worked and you had to disable every feature of the phone.
The nexus one looks so good. Still. So much support for it. Being googles baby it will probably get gingerbread. Just saying almost a year old and still one of the best phones. ("Did I get ripped off?" I sometimes wonder)
i just heard droid users are getting froyo today. this is a bunch of bull**** and im pissed at htc. i should of kept my evo. talk about dropping the ball with the hero!

To be fair though, .1 updates are never huge upgrades, just have back-updates and various new features that generally aren't massive (1.5 > 1.6, 2.0 > 2.1, 2.1 > 2.2, etc etc). The tablet remark makes sense, because if what's been said on various tech sites in the past is true, 3.0 will be made with tablets in mind, as opposed to 2.2/.3, which are not really optimized for tablets at all. Personally, I'm a bit excited to see what happens with NFC, as I am sort of into the idea of never carrying a credit card again.
Does 2.3 have requirements? I heard that either 2.3 or 3.0 will but I think its gonna be 3.0 since its a .7 update instead of a .1 update.

This isn't always the case but in general naming practice the code base for a X.1, X.2, X.3, X.N, series of a program are the same and the revision steps are bug fixes and maybe small upgrades. When a name changes from 1.X to 2.X that usually indicates a major revision to the base code such as a rewrite.
Such as, 1.5 to 1.6, minor step, few new goodies mostly bug fixes, 1.6 to 2.1, major jump tons of changes and bug fixes, 2.1 to 2.2, mostly bug fixes but also included major Dalvek VM upgrade, the step from 2.2.1 to 2.3 is mostly bug fixes and a few updates. The next major revision should be 3.0 and from what I have read and heard it will have a major focus on larger format applications beyond cell phones such as Tablets and Media devises such as Tv's and Google Tv.
well the evo devs are already working on a rom for us. glad i bought an evo when i did. i don't think the hero can handle 2.3.

My understanding is that the Nexus S (like the Nexus One) is a stripped down, super-phone, demonstration of new technology and in this case the most notable difference would be the form factor and the NFC. I think Sammy would face more backlash from consumers for ignoring hardware customers already paid for so as to make a new product with near-identical hardware better.
I would assume to have a 2.3 powerhouse phone on all major carriers for bragging and sales purposes. Would make a ton of sense.

Personally, I'd never heard of him but I've requested to follow him on twitter. In the end we'll just have to wait and see but it would be nice. If this update were coming soon I think there would be some RCs floating around but seeing as we have Froyo ones and a 'near-official' OTA update that went to .4 phones its hard to know if we'll skip 2.2 and go right to 2.3. I want this to happen but the evidence I have right now would seem to go against this.
I honestly though don't care about gingerbread all that much. I'm planning to have this phone for awhile. It does everything I need with ease. Big difference from when I had the Moment and from day 1 felt the need to smash it into a wall because of how slow and laggy it was. I would hope samsung realizes this isn't a phone to cut ties with because it defintely has staying power even after it's superceded by something faster on paper but probably only marginably faster in real world use.

With how good samsung did with sales from all the galaxy s phones, i wouldnt be surprised that they would do this.. that would be so sweet to have gingerbread on epic and since its on the nexus s with samehardware screen and stats, makes sense they could upgrade all variants epic will definitly be the top of the line if it got gingerbread, but also i agree with the poster above about caring less as long as i have a good running phone with 2.2 ill be set til the dual core processors come out and another top of the line phone comes out for sprint next year or 2 years,

Indeed. I spent months reading about how my Mytouch was getting Eclair only to be let down every time. I will say that if they do leapfrog 2.2 and get my device up-to-android-date then when I buy my fiancee's new phone in about a month she'll be getting a Sammy device. Otherwise, I'm not going to get her a phone that's always out-of-date.
Now if we dont receive an update b4 january first for anything this might prove that we will have gingerbread later and prove that they skipped froyo.
I mean if they dont give us froyo b4 the end of the year like they promised, they could be working on gingerbread we shall see by the end of this month.
The only thing I am not looking forward to is the possible return of these forums turning into unreadable garbage of people trolling, fighting and starting multiple threads about when or why Gingerbread is/isn't on the epic.

That would make sense (no pun intended ). After all the two new flagship products by Sprint are the Nexus S and EVO 3D so they'll want to push Gingerbread as a feature on those phones before they upgrade the Shift. I doubt they'll update the original EVO though. But in the mean time there's always CM7 and the other 3rd party Gingerbread ROMs. :3

I doubt they'll update the original EVO though. But in the mean time there's always CM7 and the other 3rd party Gingerbread ROMs. :3

I'm pretty sure the EVO 3D will become the new flagship product when its released this summer and over shadow the popularity of the original EVO. Even if the whole 3D thing doesn't take off its still a superior design and you can bet Sprint will be pushing that fact.

There's no way that the EVO or EVO Shift won't receive @ least the next 2 O/S updates. The backlash that would result if it doesn't would be ridiculous, even by Sprint standards.
Thats what they said about the moment too and that didn't turn out well lol

Even the Moment got updated from 1.6 to 2.1. It really would be absurd for the Evo Shift to not at get at least one OS update.

I'm pretty sure the Shift will get the next update or 2 as it came out recently. The EVO has been around a while though and the EVO 3D looks as if its been purposely designed to be the original EVO's successor. From a business standpoint it doesn't make sense to continue long-term support for a device that has been replaced. Its with that in mind that I say I doubt the EVO will get Gingerbread.

The evo hasn't even been out for a year.... it makes sense to update products in order to keep current customers happy and willing to keep a contract with you.

Yeah, and with googles new 18 month lifetime policy, who knows what the og evo will get.

I really doubt that the Evo Shift will get a major update anytime soon to Gingerbread 2.3.3 or something. But it makes me wonder what Google is going to do with their new Ice Cream Sandwich version that was mentioned at I/O
There is a leak in the dev section for 2.3.3 gingerbread with sense 2.1. Reupping now if you want to try. Not the first post, read the later ones for a flashable zip.

One o fthe things I dont get is why HTC uses some of their own apps, when the Google supplied ones are clearly much better - for example, Gallery versus HTC's Gallery.

Clearly to you. Many people disagree. I prefer Goog's but only because of Picasa integration.

finally a (possible) upadate for the shift 4g
head over to android central to see the new gingerbread leak on the evo shift 4g, if this is true then the shift is going to run so much faster with sense 2.1
