possible yea but swype the company may have a problem with that because that device isnt licensed to have swype.

You could try installing the swpye.apk from your Vibrant into /system/app as well as putting the libSwypeCore.so into your /system/lib directory. Don't know if the library would work though, but those are the two files you need to make Swype work on the G2.

you also need to change something in the Lib, some people had issues even those were pushed to the device and had to change the listed device to the name of the device

Rooting the Magic

Hey, quick question. Should you be able to root the sapphire exactly the same way as the dream by first downgrading to the early android builds, or will a new hack have to be found?
I'm wondering whether to get a magic or not, but I'd want to root it and there doesn't seem to be any documentation on it yet.
Cheers, Luke
bumping this as i probably wont get one unless i can root it..... although root doesn't offer much extra now with cupcake....

You'd get Superuser access, which would allow (amongst other things) Wi-Fi Tethering and the taskmanager - two programs I really, really want to use!
Here's hoping one of the smarter lads get their hands on one of these soon! I'd donate!
Wifi tethering, screenshots, taskmanager, (proper) themes.. all good reasons to go root.

Downgrading wouldn't help, as there is a lack of the physical keyboard on the magic to type in commands through the terminal exploit in the rc29 and lower android build. (without 1.5 there is no keyboard functionality without adb (read about this Project)

One think I like about this forum. Is that info taken from one thread can be used to help another thread...
Maybe we can root the magic using the adb shell commands they have discussed there. Its theonly thing I can think of to enter anything into the phone without a physical keyboard.
Yesterday I did some research on my Magic about rooting it.
I think it's not very easy. At least not as easy as with the Dream.
The Google Terminal emulator doesn't work on the Magic due to the lack of the physical keyboard. So I used the adb shell and discovered the following:
/system/bin/sh is executed as user "shell". So we can't do anything funky with it. You can't even view all the config files in /etc or change into every directory you want
The sdcard is mounted with gid and uid 1000 which is user and group "system". It is also mounted with nosuid and noexec. So we also have no chance of executing stuff from it.
I wonder where these groups and users are coming from since there is no /etc/passwd
A portscan revealed that there are no daemons listening on the wifi interface -> No possible exploitation.
Perhaps porting one of the early Dream roms that can easily be rooted and then taking advantage of their vulnerabilities will be a more feasible solution? I know that without the physical keyboard there would be no way to type but it might be possible to configure a build with a custom app that runs at startup and performs the necessary keystrokes for you. Just a suggestion mind, no idea if its practical.
I'd quite like to be able to use the wifi tethering apps as well, and whatever else may be released in the future that takes advantage of root capabilities.
Does anybody know if a Bluetooth keyboard works?
the telnet application has an textbox so textbox allows virtual keyboard & if telnet app is configured to run like terminal emulator means just skip the connect method it would give same functionality as the terminal emulator...
is what i am saying right?
wouldnt matter anyways. The but that let us gain root is patched, and I doubt they made the exact same mistake twice.
lets keep fingers crossed and hope that someone is already working on a way to root the magic
BUllIsh
You Can root magic just as any thing else htc makes. This is true that it has no real keys but it can run the terminal app you dont need telnet never did and never will. to root a htc magic (sapphire) all you need is sdk a fresh copy of dreming.nbh Adb or Term app what ever you perffer and some time i wont go in to spec. wrong thread but i will affter i up date android root with mike But it not theroy its fact.......that any htc android will and can be upgraded any knock off androids like *sigh* samsung, motorola, nokia blah.blah the will have to wait for there network updates lol because all new non htc phones wont have this perk. htc uses the sdcard rom upgrade to check system and function of the phone. lil fyi MAGIC CAN BE ROOTED

Standard Android Keyboard on Hero.

Is there anyway to get the standard android keyboard onto a hero? I actually have an Eris, but I don't think that effects the possibility any. I would imagine it's only an .apk file, but searching google brought up nothing. If you have the file needed to get this onto my phone, I'd appreciate it very much.
Also looking for something like this if it's possible.
I tried copying the keyboard from cyanogen mod, but it didn't work, so it's not that simple, I'm afraid.
I would also like to know how to do this.
+1
I can tell you now... you'll be disappointed with any keyboard besides the HTC keyboard. I even tried "Better" Keyboard (the quotes indicate that it's not really better).
I would be willing to give the Samsung keyboard a go, but the HTC keyboard is the best I've seen as far as interpreting your intended keys, auto complete, spell check, etc.
Definitely think the HTC keybaord is the way to go. Would hate to have to use another one.
SoftKeyboard.apk
I extracted this apk file from the AOSP source tree for Android 2.0.1. I haven't tested it yet, but it should work. After installing it, you should be able to set it as default somewhere in the Settings/Locale menus. Hope this is helpful!
Andrew
Is it possible to use the HTC Keyboard on a Motorola Droid?
If so, does anybody have the apk file?
thats a very good question. The Newer iphone style keyboard pretty bad imo. I find it really hard to type on it and it seems quite slow!
that APK File says cannot install this software on this phone! HTC Hero 1.5 T-mobile uk edition

have you ticked the box to allow install of unknown sources in settings/applications
*EDIT*
Sorry 4get what i just said i get the same error lol
Standard Keyboard
I tried following instructions I found that had me copying 2 files from ASOP Cupcake in to /system/lib, something like libjni...
and the LatinIME.apk+odex in to /system/app
And no luck I'm afraid, same error on how the keyboard could not be installed.
Anyone know if it's actually purposely restricted or just missing components that can be replaced?
I came from the HTC Magic and the keyboard is the one thing that I miss

I'm using something like this, it's something called "Scandinavian Keyboard" off the Market. You need to long-press a textfield in order to actually enable it when you've installed the apk. I suspect all you need to swap to the stock android keyboard is the LatinIME.apk from a corresponding version (of android).
The scandinavian keyboard is actually only the US ASCII layout with some long-press popups for our weird characters, so if nothing else you could probably install this too. Perhaps it's just relabeled...
framework
It seems as though the HTC_IME.apk has a framework check, so it checks either the android or HTC apk in /system/framework.
Maybe the HTC framework is preventing the install of the default keyboard?
Any developers willing to take a quick look in to this?
The android keyboard is in my opinion the better keyboard and it would be great to be able to use it on the Hero, would make the experience perfect.
i agree with the guys saying htc's one is great....it really is fast an reliable...only thing it is lacking is an option to erase false entries that keep showing up....for example i typed "aam" few times instead of "sam"

Basic concerns about Aria

Alright, guys, I really like Aria, but have a few concerns:
1. Can someone explain what it means to "root?" I did a wiki-XDA search and found nothing. I guess it means that the Aria can be flashed?
2. Apparently, the Aria won't allow voice command on BT. This is a kiss of death for me. Is it possible that xda developers can remedy this?
3. With an HVGA screen, will apps for VGA, QVGA, WVGA, etc. work?
4. Will Cookie Monster's Sense home screen mod work on the Aria?
I have the Fuze now and love its footprint. The other phones are just too darned big to put in my pocket.
Thanks in advance.

1. Basically when you "Root" a phone it means you basically get full access to everything on the phone even if for instance AT&T doesn't want you to uninstall their apps or install non market place apps. Even though there's still a way to install non market place apps on this phone fairly easy, but rooting will make it easier.
2. Not totally sure, if it's an actual issue where the Android OS can't do it then rooting it wont solve this. But if AT&T makes it so yu can't to it then yes rooting would solve the problem.
3. Most apps scale to all screen sizes. On the Android market for instance, it only shows you apps that support your screen resolution and OS version. The only problem I've had with the resolution is when I tried to install Dungeon Hunter it was kinda messed up.
4. Not totally sure sorry ;-(

Thanks for the feedback, CT; very helpful. I've been a WM guy for a long time and just learning about Android.
We'll see if anyone knows about #2 and #4.
I don't know if Cookie's home tab has an android port, but i recall reading that he won't support HVGA screens. Cookie does his development with the HD2 in mind.

Does the Aria have a large enough screen to allow the top row of Quick Links to appear without scrolling up?
Can someone include a photo of their home Sense screen?
Much appreciated.
From my understanding bt voice commands is a limitation of Android itself, not the phone.

I find that unbelievable given the value of BT voice commands. Do voice commands work with the corded ear piece that comes with the Aria?
Is this a problem for all Android phones?
voice dialing by button press/hold on a bluetooth headset is currently not possible with stock android nor is it possible with any variation or app that i know of.

check this out...before that take a backup operation. And read the instructions properly.
I have no responsibility.
Won't work that way, you'll need to re-compile the kernel and maybe re-write the touchscreen driver to support dual/multi-touch

sorry, but now no apps can do this
i`ve read around that is possible tune sensitivity by modifing some android files.
anyone know how?
for samsung by modifing some values in file /sys/class/touch but there isn`t touch in my files
Unfortunately, it's not possible on M2 afaik.
CM7
Try to install CM7, it has been improving a lot of features.
Enjoy and sorry for my brazilian english
strange that is not possible!
custom roms modifies the sensitivity!
with root u have full access to all system files! strange that there is no file on ms2 that contains sensitivity values
Moto embedded touch sensitivity on kernel. So, unless you can modify kernel, there is no easy way to modify touch.

What about trying to copy the touch file from the samsung phone into your milestone and see if it overrides?
The fact that touch sensitivity is controlled by a kernel module does not mean that this module behaviour cannot be controlled by a configuration file in /etc
on the contrary
every person with a minimum knowledge of linux systems should know that...
uhm never tried.where i should copy it? and samsung s2 ha otherd values dont know if it works i could fuk up my phone?

I would copy it in the same location as the samsung phone
I just would not change the values to zero so that your phone would always be able to catch your touch and you can do your changes.
in order to demonstrate whether your phone is more or less sensitive I would try to write with a stylus
But it could be that the motorola display does not have the property to change sensitivity, irrespective of the software side of things

This is usually caused by voltage leaks in 3rd party chargers. My moto, samsung and iphone charges are all fine, but this multi charger one I bought is crazy. It has a slighty different voltage/ampage. Apparently this can be fatal to a samsung galaxy s2's touch screen. Lucky our phones are solid little units
