Standard Android Keyboard on Hero. - Hero, G2 Touch General

Is there anyway to get the standard android keyboard onto a hero? I actually have an Eris, but I don't think that effects the possibility any. I would imagine it's only an .apk file, but searching google brought up nothing. If you have the file needed to get this onto my phone, I'd appreciate it very much.

Also looking for something like this if it's possible.

I tried copying the keyboard from cyanogen mod, but it didn't work, so it's not that simple, I'm afraid.

I would also like to know how to do this.
+1

I can tell you now... you'll be disappointed with any keyboard besides the HTC keyboard. I even tried "Better" Keyboard (the quotes indicate that it's not really better).
I would be willing to give the Samsung keyboard a go, but the HTC keyboard is the best I've seen as far as interpreting your intended keys, auto complete, spell check, etc.

Definitely think the HTC keybaord is the way to go. Would hate to have to use another one.

SoftKeyboard.apk
I extracted this apk file from the AOSP source tree for Android 2.0.1. I haven't tested it yet, but it should work. After installing it, you should be able to set it as default somewhere in the Settings/Locale menus. Hope this is helpful!
Andrew

Is it possible to use the HTC Keyboard on a Motorola Droid?
If so, does anybody have the apk file?

thats a very good question. The Newer iphone style keyboard pretty bad imo. I find it really hard to type on it and it seems quite slow!

that APK File says cannot install this software on this phone! HTC Hero 1.5 T-mobile uk edition

have you ticked the box to allow install of unknown sources in settings/applications
*EDIT*
Sorry 4get what i just said i get the same error lol

Standard Keyboard
I tried following instructions I found that had me copying 2 files from ASOP Cupcake in to /system/lib, something like libjni...
and the LatinIME.apk+odex in to /system/app
And no luck I'm afraid, same error on how the keyboard could not be installed.
Anyone know if it's actually purposely restricted or just missing components that can be replaced?
I came from the HTC Magic and the keyboard is the one thing that I miss

I'm using something like this, it's something called "Scandinavian Keyboard" off the Market. You need to long-press a textfield in order to actually enable it when you've installed the apk. I suspect all you need to swap to the stock android keyboard is the LatinIME.apk from a corresponding version (of android).
The scandinavian keyboard is actually only the US ASCII layout with some long-press popups for our weird characters, so if nothing else you could probably install this too. Perhaps it's just relabeled...

framework
It seems as though the HTC_IME.apk has a framework check, so it checks either the android or HTC apk in /system/framework.
Maybe the HTC framework is preventing the install of the default keyboard?
Any developers willing to take a quick look in to this?
The android keyboard is in my opinion the better keyboard and it would be great to be able to use it on the Hero, would make the experience perfect.

i agree with the guys saying htc's one is great....it really is fast an reliable...only thing it is lacking is an option to erase false entries that keep showing up....for example i typed "aam" few times instead of "sam"

Downloaded a cab file from a chinese website, its a today plugin that when you click takes control of your today screen and gives you many buttons to cycle through move around etc drag and drop. Has its own background and signal bar etc. Seems to be a simple application launcher which slightly resembles the iphone. Found it in an elf thread but not sure if it is from an elf. I searched the forum and cannot find anything really like it(i mean apon looking at the contents of the cab versus the content of other things I have found here) I would like to find it in english if I could figure out what to call it. I am attaching the cab file, havent gotten a screen shot of it yet but its not gonna trash your phone just the characters wont display if you do not have chinese installed.
Any help appreaciated.
Jeff
Anyone know what this is? Is it malicious? I stupidly installed it, but it shows up nowhere in directory structure, remover programs, settings, or program folder.
It is not malicous I have installed it myself and it shows up in remove programs to uninstall. It not showing up at all is strange, what are you running? Did you reset after you installed it?
I am running LVSW's latest wm6 release. It installs and works fine except for the fact that chinese characters do not show.
I did a check on the CAB, and it seems alright. It is called "dDockView", installed to your "Program Files\dDockView" dir. All files are installed there, 2 at "\Windows" and a shortcut. Nothing in the registry, nothing nastily `malicious`. Two of the files in \Windows are "dDockView.xml", "dDockPlugin.dll". Delete these if you want to remove it.
From what it seems, it only execute if you run the "dDockView.exe" in "Program Files\dDockView"
And runs on WM6 only.
UPDATE:
Attached screenshots. It looks.. ifoney. From what it seems, to be a launcher, that, the bottom part gives you the 'Menu' or 'Page' for the programs icons above.
You'll have to modify the XML in \Windows to point to your program and icons, I think.
Hey thanks for posting the screenshots I was just about to upload some myself. I knew it was a launcher but none of the chinese would show up as I did not have the local installed.
Is this comparable to the iphone app posted in these threads? Ive been searching but I havent found anything close to what files it installs I can only assume that its something the chinese have made but do not quote me on that. I wonder how hard it would be to convert it to english.

I have yet to take any rom plunge. I am runing wm5 on my 8525 all I have done is put on the newest version of radio 1.43.
When I installed it I told it to use my storage card and it did not fail but said install was ok.
Your afraid to upgrade os but are ok updating the radio? I seem to remember reading that it is easier to brick your device radio updating than just upgrading the os but do not quote me on that.
@hanmin Since you were able to see the chinese characters, what was displayed on the normal today screen where you launch the program? Mine just showed an icon with many squares of course because I could not see chinese.
It seems like a decent launcher for one handed operation and the drag and drop works nice, still havent figured out how to customize it all yet but time will tell.

Didn't say afraid, said I hadn't done it yet. Still reading and checking on what one I want to try first.
@Bohemian, I'm sure Psiodon doesn't meant to say 'afraid', probably the word 'worried / doubtful' is the word he is trying to use. Anyway, good that you are doing that. There are various newbies around that jump in and die without knowing why
@Psiodon
I didn't install the app myself. I've just examined the CAB contents and did a bit of goggling myself. I don't even know that there is a today plugin (probably I've missed some lines in the CAB). From what it seems, you can happily skip the today plugin and launch it 'normally'.
@Boh, yes I did not mean scared afraid as hanmin said, just that you did radio first as I have not done radio yet but have done os many times hehe.
@Hanmin, I must be retarded how did you get those screenshots without installing it, some emulator or other way of extracting them? The retard thing can be verified with your reply haha.
Jeff
@Psiodon You can google for screenshots? There are forum discussing it with screenshots. Just grab it from there? And, yes, there are emulator for WM5 devices if you are interested. Get it free from M$.
Are those forums in chinese or english, could you post a link to it?
Thanks in advance
Jeff
can anyone covert it to english Please
@Psiodon Google for "dDockView"
@aih1977, from what it seems, it uses a XML file for all the setup and stuff, but it also has a few DLL files which maybe difficult to convert to English.
Hi Guys,
This today plug-in come pre-installed in S1 Dopod in china which is the HTC Touch "Elf". But this is only availible in default for china market.
You need to edit the xml to do batches change to del unwanted icon.
Too bad this come in chinese lang only. And I having some program in adding new program using the standard GUI. Think I need to use the xml to add new program.
That makes sense the chinese care nothing about copyrights which sometimes is a good thing.
The software has its own custimizing app built in, you just click the little down arrows and it gives you options to delete and add new as well as lock unlock the drag and drop capability, you can change text font colors etc, it has its own button library graphics you can select from etc.
It does what its supposed to do, launches apps, displays your messages count etc, goes directly to what you want it to go to, email for email, text messages for sms etc, self customizing (to an extent) drag and drop icons for ordering. Clicking the clock brings up time of course, clicking the service bars brings up phone properties. Its pretty quick to do its various tasks and seems to be a complete program, I did notice that it doesnt seem to show the status of bluetooth wifi etc at the top or maybe I havent figure out how to configure that.
If it were in english would be alot better thats for certain.

Translator needed...Chinese
I know that some people here speaks chinese, so could any of you please look into this and translate it
Is there a easy way to break of a DLL change (e.g. translate) it and put it back?
easy way hmmm. I tried translating it myself but with my limited knowledge on such things I couldnt really get anything important changed to english, just a few menu options that you could already figure out yourself. I had to change my local to chinese to get those characters to show up in my editing programs. Then had to make shift sign the exe then copy it over to the phone. Couldnt figure out the signing cab thing and didnt work much on that since I couldnt get much changed into english. I guess the other chinese is hidden in there somewhere but with the programs I used I couldnt figure it out. The other thing that bothers me about the program is that it will let you add control panel items, but not program items, when you select that option it just sits there. I assume some path being different on the chinese version of windows mobile 6? So with all the effort I didnt get far.
There are many people out there who translate programs from different languages, maybe they have more of a clue than I do, and the ability to fix the path problem with adding programs.

any screenshots?
the HTC keyboard has bigger/better keys and can be calibrated and if your phone is rooted there are walk throughs in the development section of this forum on how to put it on the phone.
Has anybody extracted the HTC keyboard from the other rom so that it's installable on a non-rooted phone? It should just be a regular android app, right?
How do I get the HTC keyboard running on JF 1.51 US? Thanks
Install the HTC-Cime application. It's under the development section
I looked and I cannot find. Can someone provide a link? Thank you.
Isn't it called HTC-Ime and the Htc-Cime is the Chinese version? Thanks
Jashsu's CIME Installer thread here
Okay, I figured out how to get the HTC keyboard on a non-rooted phone.
Go to this page (from the development forum)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=515840
Ignore the instructions from this page, but download the update.zip file to your computer. Open up the zip folder, and extract the file called "HTC_IME.apk" (I forget which subfolder it's in, unzip it and do a search if you can't find it)
Put the HTC_IME.apk file on your SD card and then select it with a file manager (I used Linda File Manager). After it installs, go into your phone settings, select "Locale and Text" and then uncheck Android keyboard and select Touch Input (Touch Input is the name of HTC's keyboard, apparently).
That said, I think the default keyboard is actually a lot better than HTC's. Still, it's nice to have the variety and HTC's keyboard does have a T9 mode if you're into one-handed typing.

There is a free app called big keys I think. I didn't really care for the bigger keys taking away from my screen but it worked good and had simple gesture control also

anyway to get normal android keyboard?

just like the title says. i can't stand the default hero keyboard anymore. yes i've tried to calibrate and it drives me crazy. i'm looking to get the normal android keyboard.
GOOD GOD!!! Why would you want that thing on your phone?!?! lol To each his own, but have you tried better keyboard or touchpal they are very good, I like them both more than the HTC_IME. I can see why you might want the regular keyboard though wish I could help more. Having you tried pulling the apk out of a standard android rom and just installing, couldnt hurt to try right?
disclaimer: if you try and it hurts, I am sorry but not responsible

haha. yeah i've tried better keyboard and it's not really that much better. good call on the touchpal, i've had success with there winmo keyboard so i'll try that. if that isn't to my liking how would i pull out the apk from a standard android rom or can you at least point me to the right direction?
Try the dream forum go to Google and search xda Dev dream and it should be the first result. Then download a custom rom and unzip the file and you will have to look through I can't remember the location, unless someone would like to chime in with some help. Then put the apk if its in that form on your sd and click on it from the phone using a file manager from the market, Linda works great. Not sure if its that easy just giving you ideas of where to start. Beware that most custom dream roms replace the standard keyboard with htcime. Hope I helped a little.

SWYPE!

Swype has just been leaked for android, and it's awsome!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLwxIwMFzR4
How to install:
http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/12/30/how-to-get-swype-on-android/
Now to my question:
I am from Denmark, but there is no danish dictionary available. Would it be possible to either install a danish dictionary somehow (Can't find out where they put the dictionaries in the .cap...) or to just make a HUGE list of danish words in the "User dictionary" somehow?
This version will not work for MT3G or G1 users. Screen resolutions do not match.

I assume we would need to change the resolution values in at least SwypeScreen.ini found in "/assests/files/" in the apk and resize the images in "assests/keyboards/"
What are the g1/mytouch portrait and landscape resolutions anyways?
Files are 854*256, and 480*320 for the kb skins. We also have 24*24, 19*19, and 15*15 for some icons.
*edit* I tried resizing one of each the kb skins in gimp, I've got 480*144, and 320*213 that looks about right don't you guys think?*edit*

480x320, landscape is 320x480
And I vote that we combine all the various threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609059
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=600930
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614363&highlight=swype
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609496
and probably others...
I went with the ratio above for the files, but no go. Installed fine, but complained about wrong resolution. I'll try resizing now to more exact proportions which should be 480*171 (for the droids 852*256) and 320*180 (480*320).
I still haven't found another file that talks about resolutions either, also maybe I have to change the file names to represent the updated size, though I don't think that should matter.
So there's a Swype build that got out with a leaked Magic RUU. I managed to get it installed on my myTouch 3G and partially running. Installation is complicated by the need to install a library to /system/lib (so only rooted devices need apply right now).
If anyone manages to get the Swype-based input to actually output, or figure out the build.prop changes to make the annoying messages go away, please let me know. I'm not going to have the chance to mess with it this weekend so I figure I might get people started.
I was also looking at that, but I guess I'm having the same results you are. Personally, no error messages, but the keyboard doesn't show up at all.

HTC IME with Speech to Text

Hello!
Sorry if this has been asked and answered but I searched for it and could not find any info, although I swear I read a post about it the other day.
Anyway, where can I get the HTC IME with the Text to Speech function? Im on Tainted Vanilla and want to add that IME to it..
thanks.
I posted this the other day but it didn't seem like anyone cared.

I took the HTC_IME keyboard with voice input from the leaked myTouch Slide ROM and to my surprise it worked on the Eris. The only problem I've noticed is the user dictionary will crash when you try to open it. If someone would like to fix it that would be great.
While I think you're better off with jonasl's HTC_IME mod I think some people may prefer this.
Download HTC_IME-vi.zip (mirrors)
Download HTC_IME-vi-undo.zip (mirrors)
Copy HTC_IME-vi.zip to your sdcard and flash it as you would any other zip.
Flash HTC_IME-vi-undo.zip to get rid of this keyboard and go back to the default HTC_IME.
I don't know what will happen if you use this on a ported Hero or other custom ROM. I can tell you that it works on a plain rooted ROM.

I am deleting it right away ! ! !

Ohh, I see. I am new to all this.. So this program can not capture that information then? What is Swipe?

I suppose in theory it could, but the one I posted is straight from an HTC ROM and the HTC_IME mod has the source available. If there was anything fishy in it someone would've spotted it by now. This is Swype.

It means you would flash it like any other zip through the recovery menu. This is only for rooted phones.
