I saw somewhere that there is a virtual keyboard with bigger keys. Does anyone know where to get this? Thanks
Its in the market now. Its from Better Android and is much better than the standard virtual keyboard.

any screenshots?
the HTC keyboard has bigger/better keys and can be calibrated and if your phone is rooted there are walk throughs in the development section of this forum on how to put it on the phone.
Has anybody extracted the HTC keyboard from the other rom so that it's installable on a non-rooted phone? It should just be a regular android app, right?
How do I get the HTC keyboard running on JF 1.51 US? Thanks
Install the HTC-Cime application. It's under the development section
I looked and I cannot find. Can someone provide a link? Thank you.
Isn't it called HTC-Ime and the Htc-Cime is the Chinese version? Thanks
Jashsu's CIME Installer thread here
Okay, I figured out how to get the HTC keyboard on a non-rooted phone.
Go to this page (from the development forum)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=515840
Ignore the instructions from this page, but download the update.zip file to your computer. Open up the zip folder, and extract the file called "HTC_IME.apk" (I forget which subfolder it's in, unzip it and do a search if you can't find it)
Put the HTC_IME.apk file on your SD card and then select it with a file manager (I used Linda File Manager). After it installs, go into your phone settings, select "Locale and Text" and then uncheck Android keyboard and select Touch Input (Touch Input is the name of HTC's keyboard, apparently).
That said, I think the default keyboard is actually a lot better than HTC's. Still, it's nice to have the variety and HTC's keyboard does have a T9 mode if you're into one-handed typing.

There is a free app called big keys I think. I didn't really care for the bigger keys taking away from my screen but it worked good and had simple gesture control also

The best input method.
Thanks for the heads up on this - I'm a registered user, but I never seem to get the email updates. Do they actually send them?
I'm liking this version so far. It looks nicer and has handy little features. The "More" button on word suggestions was badly needed.

Ahhh, I see. Thanks for the hint
Nah, don't use this one, it makes my device run slow (I have an Axim at 600Mhz and with touchpal runs like 200MHz).
Better try FTPRO from www.fingertouchpro.com , it's fast , cool and has more options. For me it's the best software keyboard.
LOVE TOUCHPAL - but when i type "its" my Orbit soft resets !!!!!!
Have no problem using TouchPal on my Cruise, which runs on 400Mhz chipset.
The 'Its' bug has been fixed. Redownload the latest installation file from Cootek website.

is that so? did you download the official release? or something someone else posted? because I've been using TouchPal since version 2 and all the bugs have been ironed out. I have caught 3 of the bugs myself and they were fixed within 24hours.
TouchPal is my main sip, I use it at least once every 30mins while I'm awake. 3 times I've used it to write 5 page essays on my mobile. it's capable and fast once you get the hang of it. yes, there is a learning curve but it shouldn't take too long to get it.
to get the hang of it I'd say the best way is to open notes/word/textmaker or whichever is your favorite and type random words that comes to mind. it's the same layout as on a computer keyboard. so it shouldn't be too hard to understand where each key is located, plus you don't have to press the actual letters of the word you're trying to write, pressing the ones beside it will work just fine. its text prediction is really good, you can turn off the text prediction if you don't want it.
however, the text prediction is pretty good at saving typing the time it takes to type words.
eg: typing the word "circumstance", all I have to type is "circu" and it shows up in the word candidates.
lol, it's word association is good too, if it type word "nasty" it will show "masturbation" in the word candidates, lol. it sure saves me typing time when searching for these kind of videos in WVD lol.
get the file from www.CooTek.com and remember to select the download for the os you're using.
have fun
This looks pretty sweet. I will try it out in a few minutes.
I have cyanogen's rom version 3.4.6 running on the g1 I currently use touch input onscreen keyboard included, which i believe is the hero htc_IME keyboard. I love how it automatically saves new user terms to the dictionary, but occasionally it will save a term that i just spelled wrong. under my phones settings in locale and text there is the user dictionary option where i can add or delete the terms. Unfortunately this option only shows the user dictionary terms from my android keyboard and not the touch input. i have looked everywhere but i cannot find a way to view and delete the user dictionary terms for touch input..... can anybody please help me?!?!?!?!
In for answer..Been wondering the same
The dictionary is used internally by the keyboard. You can not modify it (add or remove word) unless you know the dictionary file format. But from my understanding the dictionary file format is private proprietary of Tegic software company. There's no public document about this file format

As previous stated there isn't a way to access the dictionary for Touch Input. Your best bet is to uninstall it via Manage Applications and reinstall it. Get the zip here. Push the library file. You can push the apk but it might not fit depending on your phone set up. You can simply put the apk on the root of your SD and run it using Astro or whatever file management app you're using. In the future it would behoove you to be VERY careful on adding words to Touch Input.
Thank you for the help i really appreciate it..... i'm not sure i care enough about the misspelled words to go through with deleting the app and reinstalling it...i sure wish there was an option so i could turn off the auto add feature.... oh well, i guess this is the price i pay for using a keyboard not made for my phone... thanks again!
I dont want to create another thread for a similar question. On the HTC IME how do we STOP the hardware keyboard from trying to "correct" my words as i type them? Its driving me insane.

Theres an option in the settings (gear icon key next to comma key) to turn it off completely, settings- text input and there you will see spell correction and prediction .. or whenever it automatically corrects the word hit back space asap and it will uncorrect it
I posted where the files are and how to reset it here.
However, I do not know about editing those files, you can try if you want.
Is there anyway to get the standard android keyboard onto a hero? I actually have an Eris, but I don't think that effects the possibility any. I would imagine it's only an .apk file, but searching google brought up nothing. If you have the file needed to get this onto my phone, I'd appreciate it very much.
Also looking for something like this if it's possible.
I tried copying the keyboard from cyanogen mod, but it didn't work, so it's not that simple, I'm afraid.
I would also like to know how to do this.
+1
I can tell you now... you'll be disappointed with any keyboard besides the HTC keyboard. I even tried "Better" Keyboard (the quotes indicate that it's not really better).
I would be willing to give the Samsung keyboard a go, but the HTC keyboard is the best I've seen as far as interpreting your intended keys, auto complete, spell check, etc.
Definitely think the HTC keybaord is the way to go. Would hate to have to use another one.
SoftKeyboard.apk
I extracted this apk file from the AOSP source tree for Android 2.0.1. I haven't tested it yet, but it should work. After installing it, you should be able to set it as default somewhere in the Settings/Locale menus. Hope this is helpful!

Is it possible to use the HTC Keyboard on a Motorola Droid?
If so, does anybody have the apk file?
thats a very good question. The Newer iphone style keyboard pretty bad imo. I find it really hard to type on it and it seems quite slow!

Standard Keyboard
I tried following instructions I found that had me copying 2 files from ASOP Cupcake in to /system/lib, something like libjni...
and the LatinIME.apk+odex in to /system/app
And no luck I'm afraid, same error on how the keyboard could not be installed.
Anyone know if it's actually purposely restricted or just missing components that can be replaced?
I came from the HTC Magic and the keyboard is the one thing that I miss

I'm using something like this, it's something called "Scandinavian Keyboard" off the Market. You need to long-press a textfield in order to actually enable it when you've installed the apk. I suspect all you need to swap to the stock android keyboard is the LatinIME.apk from a corresponding version (of android).
The scandinavian keyboard is actually only the US ASCII layout with some long-press popups for our weird characters, so if nothing else you could probably install this too. Perhaps it's just relabeled...
framework
It seems as though the HTC_IME.apk has a framework check, so it checks either the android or HTC apk in /system/framework.
Maybe the HTC framework is preventing the install of the default keyboard?
Any developers willing to take a quick look in to this?
The android keyboard is in my opinion the better keyboard and it would be great to be able to use it on the Hero, would make the experience perfect.
i agree with the guys saying htc's one is great....it really is fast an reliable...only thing it is lacking is an option to erase false entries that keep showing up....for example i typed "aam" few times instead of "sam"
Swype has just been leaked for android, and it's awsome!

Now to my question:
I am from Denmark, but there is no danish dictionary available. Would it be possible to either install a danish dictionary somehow (Can't find out where they put the dictionaries in the .cap...) or to just make a HUGE list of danish words in the "User dictionary" somehow?
This version will not work for MT3G or G1 users. Screen resolutions do not match.

I assume we would need to change the resolution values in at least SwypeScreen.ini found in "/assests/files/" in the apk and resize the images in "assests/keyboards/"
What are the g1/mytouch portrait and landscape resolutions anyways?
Files are 854*256, and 480*320 for the kb skins. We also have 24*24, 19*19, and 15*15 for some icons.
*edit* I tried resizing one of each the kb skins in gimp, I've got 480*144, and 320*213 that looks about right don't you guys think?*edit*

480x320, landscape is 320x480
And I vote that we combine all the various threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609059
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=600930
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614363&highlight=swype
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609496
and probably others...
I went with the ratio above for the files, but no go. Installed fine, but complained about wrong resolution. I'll try resizing now to more exact proportions which should be 480*171 (for the droids 852*256) and 320*180 (480*320).
I still haven't found another file that talks about resolutions either, also maybe I have to change the file names to represent the updated size, though I don't think that should matter.
So there's a Swype build that got out with a leaked Magic RUU. I managed to get it installed on my myTouch 3G and partially running. Installation is complicated by the need to install a library to /system/lib (so only rooted devices need apply right now).
If anyone manages to get the Swype-based input to actually output, or figure out the build.prop changes to make the annoying messages go away, please let me know. I'm not going to have the chance to mess with it this weekend so I figure I might get people started.
I was also looking at that, but I guess I'm having the same results you are. Personally, no error messages, but the keyboard doesn't show up at all.

Hi Guys,
I hope this isn't a stupid question but I'm looking for the Swype keyboard for our new Android OS. I looked in the android app store and even on the Swype website but can't see any download links. I'm guessing it's available so would anyone have a link/app they can point me in the direction of?
Thanks in advance
I second this. I found a few apk's for the droid etc but most of them are expired beta trials and/or aren't suitable for the screen res.
