[Q] Parts of Sense in vanilla rom?? - Droid Eris Android Development

Is it possible to use parts of Sense in a vanilla rom? like the dialer and messaging app perhaps? just curious because i have been doing a lot of switching around and if i had the choice i would pick some pieces of Sense.

How to enable JIT?

Does anyone know how I can enable JIT on the Evil Eris Rom 2.0.1. I've used the senseless patch to remove all the Sense UI, except the lock screen.
Just a quick question... if you are on Evil Eris... and wanna make it vanilla why not switch to a vanilla rom?
Honestly, I don't know the difference between the two. I do like how the dialer look though in EE vs Tainted Vanilla.

I think there is a zip for JIT on GRDLOK's page. Where can I find the sensless patch?
Just to forewarn you Sense remover doesnt completely remove sense. All the roms here are still Sense Based Roms... until we get AOSP. So... JIT and Sense is very unstable. I suggest if you try it, always make a nand backup.

Don't know what lockscreen EE uses but the htc lockscreen has always locked up on me when using JIT so you might want to remove it too if it still has the htc lockscreen. There was a program I found here on xda a while ago that would remove sense and enable JIT for you all from your computer. I think it was in the hero section but I used it on my eris a while back to try and it did work. It was called Nosense I think if you want to look for it.

Framework is working on getting all the drivers for the eris working because he to mod some of the .config files. But i can smell it coming...
Thanks. I found the sense remover here and was able to enable JIT. I do also like the Helix Launcher!

It'll be a temp fix for now as I am hearing great things about AOSP, which I'll be switching over to when released.

So uh.. What's AOSP? I've heard it thrown around but never really knew what exactly it was.
JIT lags way too much on my phone. Thanks NAND.

I suggest if you want JIT... because it is snappier even if buggy... Get Tainted Vanilla and try it with JIT_UPDATE.zip... if you like the N1 launcher then run the OpenGL 3D patch (this will make Gallery not work)... Otherwise there is a custom Zeam this dude made and look a lot like N1...

If I may ask...

Do any of the devs prefer Sense?
Im finding more and more "little" things I did not realize were particular to sense (email that doesn't suck harder than a Tijuana Whore on pay day, the lack of Vcard functionality etc).
Problem is, I am loving froyo too
So anyhow I guess more directly I want to know if anyone is working on a sense/froyo

It sounds like you want something like Tainted Vanilla with a Froyo base... Maybe someone will get the motivation to do that. Maybe not. It's not a bad idea.
I personally find AOSP based ROMs to meet my needs, but Sense isn't bad. It just slows things down, and this phone doesn't need to be slowed down.
Another hybrid ROM with the extra speed that Froyo and OCing brings... Hmm. It's something to thing about.
I could honestly care less about the ascthetic parts of sense... In Fact I would kill to see a vanilla rom with HTC mail and contacts only...
I just hoped some of the devs prefered sense.
I know one "dev" that is wanting to start work on a Sense Froyo, but there are some people here that aren't fans of this gentleman so I won't bother mentioning his name. Keep an eye out over at androidforums though.
phonebook 2.0 looks a LOT like the htc contacts.
I believe Framework is working on a Froyo version of sense.

I don't mind the look of 2.0, I love froyo, its the missing functionality that is killing me.

This is the exact idea behind xtrROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694472
is that a hint you are working to extend that to FroYo?-
I kinda like the look of the new sense that the desire didnt get. i also know that there is a sense based froyo build possibly coming this way soooon/
I actually enjoy sense, it seems more snappier and fluid then the Vanilla roms released, I know its just a kernel thing though. Which is why I can't wait for Kaos to come out with his new kernel
i dont think that people dont like sense i know i do i just like JIT way more lol

I hate Sense. I used Ivan's Official until Tainted Vanilla came along, and switched to True Vanilla when it became available. Have not used a Sense ROM since.
I'm not a dev, but there are people that indeed dislike Sense

what sense rom do you use thats snappier and smoother?
what AOSP roms have you used that are slower then sense. . . so i can make sure to not use them. No offense sense rom builders, but i havent had any luck with sense roms. i do love how it looks just slows my already slow enough phone down further.
#1 there always twitching between simple home screen scrolling and app drawer scrolling let alone anything that needs to actually use the CPU
#2 my battery dies much faster with all of those awesome looking widgets
#3 JIT doesn't play too nice with sense making it slightly lose its edge against AOSP roms.
I used to like sense until I started using White Widow... now the only thing I actually miss from Sense is the Facebook contact linking. Everything else seems to have a replacement so far... and often more customizable, which I always enjoy
Evil Eris is a very solid sense rom imo.

Facebook sync has been working with the newest CELB build. When I boot, the market has an updated FB app. I suspect this may be the cause.

now that I think about it, is it possible to get the BT functionality in 2.2 ported to 2.1?

Sense vs senseless roms

Are senseless roms for people who use different launchers? So if I use LPP for example, it'd be better if I used a senseless rom? Does sense drain battery/impact performance? Thanks a lot. Switching from a fascinate and trying to learn the basics.

To be honest, senseless roms are for people who like to have the close to stock experience or wish to use apps/widgets a-la-carte and want the flexibility to try different combinations of these without having the rom be saddled with bloatware.
Keep in mind though that senseless roms dont look as pretty as sense based roms and many features that a sense rom offers like messaging, email widgets have no real or good parallels in the stock/senseless world. So in getting flexibility you lose some really nice features and well the phone looks plainer.
I have had to work very hard to make CM & MIUI work for me by using 3rd party apps/widgets - wasnt easy finding good ones! Sense roms (especially the desire z ports) on the other hand had everything I needed and then some.
That was my personal experience.

Yes, yes and yes!
However you would also want to flash a different kernel, and IMHO it would make your rom quicker than stock. By the term senseless keep in mind these are still sense based roms but without rosie ans some other things defined by the individual DEV.
Thanks for your guys responses. I only use LPP so Rosie would be of no use to me. The problem I see with senseless roms is that they don't seem to be updated as much as sense ones. And which one would you recommend to use, skyraider's or Lou's. I would guess they are pretty similar. can't wait to receive my incredible on Friday

i'm using lous w/ kernal#4 so far no problems. Find it much quicker than the sense roms i was using before.
If you use 3rd party for most apps (chomp for message, gmail for email, lp for launcher) there really isn't much use for a sense rom IMO.
+ Lous has the smooth icons and still the sense lock screen, fine by me.
Enjoy owning the best phone in the world!

I would say Lou's hands down, of course I'm sure you will find other opinions on here. He does great work! and dresses his roms up nice.
As you become more familiar with flashing roms and what you can and cannot remove from a rom it is fairly easy (at least I think it is) for you to flash for example I use Lou's 2.1.3 rom and remove whatever you don't like on the rom. This way there are many options and you can get it just the way you want.
If you decide to jump into this you might want to consider getting some nice apps. I use Root Explorer, Titanium Backup, AppBrain, Adfree on a reg basis. I save my contacts to my SD card as well. This way I can switch between roms as I please have all my info stored and can swith basicly within a hour to a different flavor whenever I want. Oh and yes I use LPP on all my roms as well.
Hope this helps some
lou's sense-less and kernal #04 or 06 work for me. Ive grown very tired of sense.. what is it now 4 or so years between WM and android.lol though I do have to say running sense on teh DINC by far was the best exp.. no lag and it was smooth.. but I like options..so senseless made more sense to me.. keep the base.. and customize the launcher without the bloat..lol
Always loved Redemptive by Lou.
Virtuous is the best sense app I've used and I've tried em all. Mounting, GPS, everything works and its fast. I use a sense Rom cause I like the messaging. I HATE that stupid Ass smiley instead of a return key you see in all the non-sense roms and I don't want to use an extra app to text!

theres no smiley instead of a return key on my keyboard or messaging. i'm running lou's senseless rom

I think he's referring to a vanilla keyboard rather than a "senseless" keyboard.

[Q] CM 7 and Sense features

So, I am going to flash CM7 on my phoen pretty soon, but I will really miss the nice camera app from stock and the contact integration system (facebook, skype, +others). Is there any way that these features can be somehow used in CM7? I mean, is there some possibility for the CM mod to eventually use these features as default?
also, side note question, but, is Iced Glacier pretty much a Sense ROM?
thanks!

I/G is a sense ROM. Which uses the Sense Framework. Cyanogen is a AOSP ROM it is impossible for Sense framework .apk (programs) to work on AOSP ROMs. so to answer your question if you want the camera use I/G.
until htc open sources sense, which they wont do, we will never be able to get sense based apps to run without the sense framework.
Thanks guys. Do you know of any AOSP based apps which look nicer than the default camera, and are as fast?
also, i just thought of this, does CM7 support "swype" typing?
and does iced glacier make the phone run faster/longer than sense, just like CM?
sorry for all these questions in the same thread, but they are somewhat related

I dont have all of the answers you're looking for, but Iced Glacier should have better battery life than stock, and it should perform much better as well.
Swype is supported on cm7. the beta is still open. check out beta.swype.com

T-Mobile has open sourced their theming interface to the myTouch 4G.
https://github.com/tmobile
They say it will be rolled into CM7. I don't know if this will be enough to run the stock Camera app and Contacts app.
its already in cm7, but thats not whats needed for the sense features. It literally needs the sense frameworks.

htc launcher

hey, is it possible to port the widgets and stuff like the 3d launcher from the evo in an apk?
If you're talking about HTC Sense stuff then no. HTC Sense launcher, widget and apps are intertwined with the android framework. The only way to get them on the Atrix would be a full HTC Sense ROM port. Unless you use an app off the market that mimics the functionality. Custom launchers, customizable widgets, etc.
oh! makes sense haha. I want to get into developing and stuff. Would trying to port that be to hard of a project? xD

do you have any understanding of the Java programming language?
If not, then I would say yes, it would definitely be difficult until you learned it.
