Spread the Word.. Get us noticed - Venue Pro General

Hello all,
I am usually not one to make a big deal about things but I am really unhappy with Dell. If they were not ready with a quality device they should have just passed on having a launch event.
I figured it would be good to try and get more info out there since there are so few of us that have been dealing with this issue of the engineering samples and now bad returns. May not help us but you never know. If more sites have news about this maybe Dell will start to take notice since I have tried to get the news to all the Windows Phone sites that I have been reading.

I have also sent some info to jkontherun.com
Hopefully if word of what is going on spreads a bit more Dell will say something.. anything..

If Dell isn't ready with the Venue Pro then I'd just let Dell take their time to come up with a polished product. It's clear that they were not ready for the November 8 soft launch. The decision to rush the phones to Microsoft stores led to this PR fiasco.
It's just a phone. It's not the end of the world. Dell isn't forcing anyone to buy their phone.

I don't want them to rush anything.. I want the exact opposite.. If they get bad press from all of this they might think twice about releasing a product this way again.
I really want them to take a good few months to get it right before they try and launch again.

I'd like for them to just quickly tell us if this is a week long fix for them or a few months, I'm betting it's a few months now and I may just end up getting a Focus by Dec 1st

I think they are going to take their time trying to please us, they have a bigger computer market to worry about. They are going to what they do regardless

I believe between this site and references to this site from various techblogs as well as comments in Twitter have gotten Dell's attention.
Although I got my wife the Focus, I have decided to give Dell an opportunity to correct itself with a fixed product to release. Having said that, I may reach a point where I just might wait until first of next year to see what other devices Samsung and others have up their sleeve. Frankly, the hardward/spec on all the current WP7 phones are near end of lifecycle products (except the screen) on teh DVP and Foucs) so I'm kind of at a point where I may just skip the Venue Pro all together and wait for the next gen devices.
Hell, I've waited 1.8 years for WP7, what's another 2-3 months... All this goes out the window if Dell has it available in December. If later, I'll just wait.

If you do currently own a DVP and have issues, call Dell mobility and have them issue you a service number. They are escalating all issues to management. That would at least show that you as a consumer are concerned and will hopefully get them in contact with you once they have some news. The number is 18003083355

Yep. A representative called me yesterday afternoon to tell me my order had been canceled. And the wait continues...

Pretty sure that post didn't cause them to make such a large decision as to cancel all pre-orders...lol

I would certainly hope that a post would not sway corporate decisions like that. My hope is that Dell or Microsoft says something about the status of the product. At the moment the MS stores are still showing them but not saying anything about availability.

I am with you on this, I made a point about the poor specs and build quality on the HD7 and got criticized buy a few.
It seems that most think the current specs are fine.
Personally I would like better all round specs not 2 year old tech like the HD2 has. After all it is nearly 2011.
It has been frustrating trying to get a WP7 phone with the specifications I like.

F***ing tired waiting!

I've contacted DELL several times about this POS and they always either act stupid or stonewall. They've been jerking our d*cks about this thing for over 6 months now. I'm ready to buy an HD2 just to f'ing spite them.

Are you dumb? It's been released already in the UK, they have basically given release dates for the US and US versions are starting to pop up on ebay.

Like I said - SPITE! I hate a company like that jerking me around. The last time I asked a rep about it (last week), they acted like they didn't know what a Streak was and asked me for a webpage on it. I gave the guy the webpage on Dell's site and he said "oh...we don't have a release date". F'ing assholes.

Haha indeed Dell support acts like they do not know what you are talking about. Then state they have no information. Dell also does not even have an information page for the product other than the press release and 1 blog post (which they never respond to comments).
I too am completely furious about their approach to getting the Streak in the hands of their customers (other than the UK). I personally believe they are tied down with partners (like AT&T and O2) restricting them to just do whatever they wanted and release it. They have confirmed at the D8 that it will release in the US in July. Almost there...
Also, this is all new territory for Dell. Overall the Streak is a beauty and for that, I could care less who made it. I just want one!
jezz ease up. If engadget hadn't managed to find the mini 5 prototype in Asia you wouldn't have known about it for so long. Whats wrong with developing your first piece of hardware in the mobile marketplace so its good and can get help get market share. I mean would you want them to launch a device that is buggy and has issues, I think not.
They have been pretty clear for the last little while on dates and launch details, more clear than some of HTC or Moto launches as of late. Go get your HD2 and enjoy some year old WinMo if thats what you really want.
I'm tired of waiting around to find out whether or not this thing will work on T-mobile. Yeah, I know about the FCC filings for the t-mobile band version but who knows if that even was manufactured.

I hope you're right dude. I had a Touch Pro that had a digitizer failure so now I'm forced back to my 8125 Talk about TORTURE! I was going to just buy another Touch Pro or similar but hate to spend the $$ when the Streak "may" be coming out here in July. I've been drroling over the Streak for a long time, but I REALLY hate Dell's PR and handling of the release of it. That's where Apple has a real edge over other MFR's, they keep the lid on it so people don't get pissed waiting on their products. Michael Dell was smiling like a fool several times over the last 6 months with a Streak as if to say "ha, ha MF's! I have one and you don't!" Makes me want to say "suck it, asshole! I'll take my $$ elsewhere."
Hi guys,
It's worth the wait.
I have had loads of HTC's, last one being my HD2 in February.
I got the Dell Streak yesterday and I thinks its better than any of the HTC's I have had before inc the HD2.
This is mainly due to the Android OS and the marketplace download facility which is way better support than any windows based apps download, or in fact is there any?
I have installed loads of aditional apps, all free and am having lots of fun just as an iphone user would, with ease of use , but all my apps have been free, think I said that but it should be repeated.
I am very gratefull to the XDA team in supporting this device via this forum but the next major step up will be 2.2 hopefully in September.
My brief summary is its not too big but definately bigger that the HD2. The screen of the Dell is actually the size of the outer dimensions of the HD2.
The OS is much better and seems to be a more intuative device all round.
Ther is even an XDA app which saves having to go via the browser and is also very good but for some reason will not accept my login. Very easy to use.
So just wait and don't dive into a HD2 pit even though I love that as well.

Hey John,
What you say is true. This device's software is great, and has a lot of apps backing it up. However, that's solely because of the Android OS. Tell me, is it worth having a 5inch screen for a phone? Wasn't the HD2's 4.3 inch big enough?
HTC also has excellent Android phones that are backed by the same software as the Deal Streak, same goes for Sony Ericsson and Samsung.
On a personal note, I don't see this phone getting as much support as the N1, Desire, or even the X10. Whether from the manufacturer or us, the community . So It all comes down to that, doesn't it---as well as the aesthetics and dimensions of the Streak as well.
I don't see the Streak going far in it's life time.

Two things on this:
1.6 Really? After having 2.2 on my Sexy Nexy, not sure I want to go back down...
And I played with an EVO and an HD2 last night. 4.3 is pretty big. I'm really re-thinking the 5 inch screen...but damn, it's 5 inches! This is the biggest love/hate I have ever had. Ugh.

Hate to say it, but I agree. I'm not sure Dell will roll out releases in a timely manner (I mean come on, this thing is shipping with 1.6???). And I don't see it being a huge success at 5", so I don't think there will be as large of a community offering support.

Hi Guys,
I am not agest but I am 56 and my eysight is therfore going south.
I cannot see any mobile screen without the assistance of reading glasses.
So for me the larger the better. Having said that I think going above 5" may be impractical for a phone. I have not tried it with a bluetooth hedset yet. I have one in the attick somewhere that I have been trying to flog on car boots for 3 yrs.
The streak does go in my jeans pocket as is but I am now looking round for a decent cover that will protect but not add too much to the dimensions. That may be hard.
I have found the streak better than the HD2 in several ways.
First the additional size does help with browsing and able to fit in lots of screen shortcuts for apps/widgets etc.
It does seems faster all round.
Apps install in the native 2gb memory leaving the sd card all for myself. On the HD2 I was installing as many apps onto the SD as would work.
Some of the above is due to android yes
I am patient enough to wait for the 1.6 to 2.2 upgrade and I think Dell will come through as they have a vested interest in getting the 5" working and selling itself before bringing out 7" and 10" versions.
I am new to android but maybe Dell wanted a tried and tested version as their first tablet before going for say v2.1. I dare say thier development team is fairly new.
Android 3 looks good but may not be available on our phones until xmas 2010.
I think there is definately a market for bigger phones if only for chaps of a certain age who are still techies.
The HD2 may well have a larger market but so has the iphone and there are more reasons I don't want one of them then I can discuss here. Apps are a doddle to install on Android compared witrh any windows phone.
I would like to see manila on the Dell but that will never happen as its HTC property. The Android 3 version seems to be offering a decent GUI though.
WOOT WOOT!!!!
I do not care what anyone says. I want a Dell Streak and I want it bad! I just hope this bad boy has some decent gpu performance.
Thanks [email protected] orange didn't get hold of this! All I can say. Selling my TG01 to buy myself out of my 'we sell you a mobile even though there's little or no coverage in your area by our so called vast Orange network' contract.

O2 ftw.

Agreed
Glimmer of hope???
Per BGR: We have heard from an AT&T source that the Dell Streak is launching on July 19th on AT&T...
- Can't post a link since I'm a 'new member'... just google news it...
I bounced through Dell sales chats a few days ago and finally was told by someone in the Electronics and Accessories dept. that it will be available on their website on 7/16/2010. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen.
Either way, maybe one of the other phones might be better for me (like the Samsung Captivate/Galaxy S series), since it still has a pretty big screen without all the heft of the Streak. Also, the Captivate may receive wider market acceptance and more software support from Samsung as well as developers (at least AT&T and other carriers are promoting this device, which is more than Dell is doing right now).
Johnny,
I am like you old as dirt, and the bigger the better. plus the browsing experience is better when bigger.
I wanted a Huewai S7 which is 7", but not available till the end of July.
Android OS rocks over the HD2 win crap. this is the last win phone I am going to have, selling my HD2 to my son....
Dell has really done a dirty deed to us all, but it should be worth waiting.
Please dont make the mistake of buying the samsung galaxy s, its a pile of s**t, trust me i had 1, just to many problems and samsungs UI is so slow, that it lags like hell, i now have a dell streak and i couldent be happier

[Q] Is the Dell Venue Pro a failure?

What do you think about this phone now that we have seen what Dell has done to its launch with SIM card failures and secure Wi-fi issues, etc.?
Yes. I still want one .
Problem is, as far as I'm aware Dell still haven't actually launched the phone officially. Clearly we can all see why with all the problems people are having. But they're getting a massive amount of stick for a phone that's been forced early onto the market in small quantities by MS (so it would seem).
I was holding out for the DVP, but just picked up an HD7 as it may be some time before they get it out the door officially, and also I'm hoping that there will be a step up in specs at some point next year, which could then put the DVP back behind the curve if it's too late to market.
What's happened with it has been a failure, but I do feel for them somewhat since they clearly haven't wanted to release it yet as it's not ready, but those few who managed to get one from MS are now destroying it before it's officially launched. Someone in the marketing dept screwed up big time I would suspect - they obviously got drawn in too much at the idea of being the MS flagship device at launch day.
The HD7 is awesome though, hopefully this time next year the DVP2 will be out with faster processor, more memory, and all the problems sorted
Dell should have cuts its losses after the soft-launch of the first batch of Venue Pros with the secure wifi bug and mislabeled batteries by issuing a recall of all the Venue Pros sold. They should just have accepted the returns, refunded the money, and waited until they were truly ready before selling the phones again.
I have to agree that this whole launch was a mistake for Dell. I am sure there was pressure from Microsoft but Dell is its own company and if they felt that they were not ready they should have said no. Based on what was shipped to consumers it seems clear that they were not ready.
My hope now is that they can re-group and make some sort of statement about what they are doing to get this phone out the door. For many this has put a bad taste in their mouths as no one wants to pay to test out a product that they have to use in their daily lives.
Still getting one, just not from the first batch...
good point.. same here..
Hopefully getting one as long as these bugs are fixed, im not spending 500+ and the phone acts up
im waiting dor the next gen. hope it comes with a front camera and running on webos or android.

Negative....
They supposibly have a Dell Venue coming out for Android without the sliding keyboard
Well I wouldn't say the device is a failure, yet. It still has a lot of potential but its all upto dell to get the launch fixed and working devices shipping. I mean lets consider a few things:
1. A lot of the hard stuff has already been done by Microsoft..the OS, some drivers etc. I'm assuming the snapdragon SoC drivers were handled by Microsoft for a few reasons:
Qualcomm worked very closely with MS to optimize the QSD8250 for Wp7. This leads me to believe that they wrote the drivers for it and would explain why every phone is using it. I mean why would samsung use a worse processor when they have their own superfast one.
SIM readers are so bog standard that I highly doubt the firmware for them varies from device to device.
2. Dell had 1 year or so to get this device working, why weren't these issues noticed during testing? I mean at most dell would have to just code a few drivers (wifi, screen, and camera), and they managed to screw that up too?
3. Dell CEOs has said developing for WP7 is a lot easier than Android...foot in mouth maybe? If it was easier why so many problems?
4. Dells mobile division was pretty good at one point of time. But the streak and aero, while good devices, were executed so poorly. Why did they ship with an ancient version of Android? What was dell thinking?
All that leads me to believe that while Dell has the potential to make a stellar product...bad management and terrible communication has lead to them ruining what could have been potentially good products. Maybe thats why the dell mobile division president was fired?
Yes and considering that Dell didnt screw up their flagship Android device Dell Streak must mean that they can pull off a very good product. Why this phone they messed up befuddles me. Maybe WP7 scared them.

I would give them a break, I understand that sometimes stuff like this happens with electronic devices. Thankfully Dell stopped took a step back and took feedback from the community with a number of issues already resolved as of now. While I don't like a new device having so many issues what I do like is a company owning up to them and doing what is necessary to fix those issues.
I certainly would not say the device is dead on arrival as people are obviously ordering it. Also your poll needs more options, I am not particularly loyal to Dell or this phone. I am just a realist who can comprehend that electronic devices can and normally do have issues.

Take this all back, the device may not be a failure but dell obviously is. They need to stick to computers and stay out of the phone game.

ATTN: Beta Streak owners... and FYI for everyone else

I just got off the phone with Dell for the 5th time today. I went through online support, and direct on the phone support to include several reps, and 2 supervisors (if they are really who they say they are).
According to them, the Beta streaks were 30 day devices only. They were supposed to work for 30 days and then stop working. To a degree, most did, since AT&T blocked the IMEI numbers on their networks. Some, like me, took them over to Tmobile and they still work with any GSM card. In any case, Dell's intention was to make the beta units "throw away" phones. Their beta program was designed to give the flavor so that beta owners would then purchase new models through whatever channels, be it AT&T or direct through Dell.
As such, and as with mine, they tell me, there is no support whatsoever for the beta units and that's why our Svce Tags do not appear anywhere but on our devices. They will not support them, and thus, the updates that were going out would never have reached our devices. This seems strange to me since a few months ago I did get an OTA that left the device on 1.6, but beyond that, <insert overly exaggerated shrug here> This information tells me that the only way we'll get the updates is by manually installing them ourselves. Considering the trash that Dell has put us with (the 2.1 farce in the UK, and now the 2.2 slap in the face recently) this is no surprise to me. I'm grateful that I didn't have to pay for this device, as I would be trying to organize a class action suit right about now... so I guess the soul searching begins. I like the phone... but now I hate Dell... I'll probably sell my laptop too. Do I stick it out with this streak, or do I go get something else with Froyo on it?
stick it out, bud, this is a nice peice of equipment, forget Dell, thats what XDA is here for. Not too long I'm sure we will se some dual core devices, until then I say go with the streak, or sell it for a decent price
Mine Streak is also a Beta unit but when I checked for an update it was there .. I downloaded it and installed it .. I am surprised it didn't work that way for you. Now I am only 99.99999% sure it is a beta unit .. whatever it is, I use Tmobile with it.
Yeah, I hate the way Dell has handled just about every aspect of handling the Streak.
But didn't they say that Beta Streaks (on 1.6) would get this 2.2 update first? Is there anyone still on 1.6 that actually GOT the update?
I'm using a Beta unit, and it's still working just fine. I wouldn't say that they considered them to be "throw away" devices, because from everything I've read (I've been following the Streak for more than a year now), they're basically just early full production units. Sure, there might have been a line of code in there to make it not work with ATT, but mine's on TMO and I couldn't be happier. (Well, except it'd be nice to have 3G bands lol!)
ShEEsh.... get a text editor from the market and go into your system>build.prop file using a Root Explorer... there's a line that I found in mine in that file that says "ro.build.CONFIG_HW_AUSTIN=1"... I take that Austin line to mean that this is the Beta hardware (because I KNOW mine is a Beta lol).... if yours says that, it's a beta. If it has =0, I'll bet it's an ATT unit....
I did get the update first and it installed fine.

So let me get this right... You've got a FREE Dell Streak which is a BETA unit that you didn't pay for, that still works fine even though Dell had intended that it would have a short life span - and you're *****ing because they won't offer support on it?

Lol i have to agree..free unit,
I think you should leave the streak alone and jump into another device and that should be an iPhone 4. first the dell you got free is crap because can't be use with ATT.
second, it might never work with ATT , and that sucks cause you wanna use your free beta device there. third this thing has no warranty? so if you break your FREE device then they have to repair it for free too? damn that sounds like a hell of a deal. So if you have signed the paper on that marathon/race and read carefullly you will see that it clearly stated that the device is for 30 day testing, now you want to sue them because you want to use the device on ATT after the 30 day trial and aren't getting any support? I don't understand why the crying? don't want to be an a**hole but I don't get the point. this is like reading a review in newegg saying oh the package was very bad wrapped and when it got here it had 2 dins on each side of the package, and it has written "i'm kinky" all over the place so go ahead and mark 1 star just because of that, and has nothing to do with the actual device.
I currently own a BETA device I did pay for it and I won't be getting any warranty, am I crying about it? no, am I happy? can't be more happy to pay for this. So far my internal SD has given up had to buy one, no biggie, i have a bad USB cable, I haven't cry yet. still have my dignity and my upgraded streak on a working condition. Can't be anymore happier than what I am at the moment. Almost bought a samsung captivate and I'm glad I didn't.
Don't want to be mean but is just how I think that some of you just want the whole world in your feet without doing anyithing.
And the most important on these devices is not the warranty (that is third for me) it is the COMMUNITY, the community makes the device worth having.
You don't need Dell support .. their support is HORRIBLE .. Nobody knows what the person in the next cube knows... You can call 3 times, same question and get 3 different answers. The ONLY THING the beta user is lacking is warranty. But most people have voided their warranty over and over again ..
I traded my PAID FOR Dell Streak that was locked to ATT to someone with a Beta, that was locked OUT OF ATT .. Got my update before anyone else .. I am happy!! but still .. Dell does suck. I wouldn't buy from them again .. [unless they had a Streak, problems solved, that connects to Tmobile 4G ..
ALSO .. when I got a call from Dell last week saying "UNLOCKED Tmobile available now." I asked "is that with 3G or rather Tmobiles 4G .." There is not ANYONE there that can answer that question .. Shouldn't they know if they are calling YOU to purchase???
Couldn't agree more, sadly, that is the world we live in now.
Everyone wants everything GIVEN to them, and if not, they sue.
I use to kludge, hack stuff back in the DOS days...if it didn't work, oh well...wasn't suppose to anyway, but, when it did, it was a since of accomplishment & pride!
Now, if something doesn't go exactly the way someone wants it to, they get all bent out of shape.
Am I happy the 2.2 update hasn't hit my non contract bought directly from Dell streak? Nope...would I like the 2.2 update...yep, but, considering I came from a windows mobile 6.5 and earlier phone(s), that had to be tweaked out of the box just to get the #*$*! thing to run, I'm happy with 1.6.
We live in an "instant" world....24/7 internet, 24/7 news, 24/7 everything, and I for one think it has made us WORSE, not better....we have no patience anymore.

I'd expect TMobile to know if they were caling you since it's their network, but maybe not Dell. Do you know what band TMobile are using for their 4g service? if it doesn't match with what is on the Streak then it has no chance of working.

So let me get this right... You've got a FREE Dell Streak which is a BETA unit that you didn't pay for, that still works fine even though Dell had intended that it would have a short life span - and you're *****ing because they won't offer support on it?
I've got just two words for you m8
Grow up!

ok to all the cool people that actually read my post and got the gist of what it was saying, thanks for the advice and good words. To all the jerks like this dude, man, ease up.
For starters, I was information gathering. I called to find out why my svce tag wasn't showing up. my details of the events was called information SHARING... especially to other beta owners... hence the attn beta title...
now with that being said, the last thing was IF I had bought it I might be trying to organize a class action suit. It's a good device, but Dell is on the brink of ruining it with the crappy update and even crappier support to everyone not just me.
So, ok I'll grow up, if you, with obviously nothing better to do, will try to get a life...

Finally...some good news

Hello fellow DVP owners, I've been following all the issues we've had pretty closely and stalking DellCares twitter quite a bit. I know everyone has been focused alot on the issues with it but this is the first official word we've had that Dell is looking to address some of the issues.
emed795 Hi Erik, just wanted to let you know that DVP memory and other issues to be addressed in future sw update. No ETA yet. Thanks, AB 6:00 PM Jan 13th via CoTweet
im_thatoneguy Software update for DVP camera in progress, no ETA on it yet. Let us know how troubleshooting steps worked for you. SV 5:39 PM Jan 6th via CoTweet
Hopefully WiFi is also included in this update........
Saw the Twitter post. Hmm, well, another promise. Hope they do something. Of course, we'll have to go through the long, long wait, but this sort of goes with Dell's MO--problems addressed (in part) in the future. At least in my experience with them. It'd be nice to avoid problems at the get-go, but as they say, "Remaking the world, now that is folly."
At least they're not being adamantly silent about it.
Too little too late and still no mention of an international release. I've given up on that phone and everyone should at least until MWC. There are alternatives if you can't wait and if you can there will be stuff at MWC.

The phone works fine for me, can even use wifi with a workaround so I'm quite happy with it. With the DVP being one of only 2 options for T-Mobile US users there really isnt much of a choice if you want a WP7 phone. You guys in Europe have more options to choose from, but if the issues are resovled it will be one of the best WP7 devices. And again MWC may bring new devices but I doubt they will be US bound so again the DVP still looks like a good buy to me. Even the camera can be made to produce good pictures with some adjustment of the settings, so this update will definitely be a plus.

What has the tech world come to when we pay for a premium product and we are forced to accept work arounds to get it to work. I understand that some fixes are always needed but most are usually software related (WP7 being new) but this device seems to have more issues that are directly related to the unit itself.
I have to say every time I hold one I am drawn to it but I have a hard time with a unit that costs this much and has these kinds of issues.
I hope that Dell can get the fixes out there quick so that we can get more of these in people's hands.

I understand your point but is there a perfect device? Even the phone to rule all phones (iphone) has issues (bumper anyone?), the WP7 OS itself has a reproducable bug on every handset with the MP crashing, yet we still use it. Problem with the Dell was the high expectations of the device since it was first leaked, then we had to deal with the release delays, shipping issues, virtually no communication from Dell and then after finally getting the device bugs that affected what could be considered fundamental functions. Probably led many to either give up and purchase something else or return it after receiving it and feeling it didnt live up to the expectation.
However the fact that I am happy to use a workaround does not mean I have accepted the faults and overlook them, I and others have contacted Dell and told them about the issues and as any decent company would they have responded with an upcoming fix (more than we can say for HTC and the pink camera bug on the HD7). This is what I would expect of any company and since Dell has responded I'm OK with a workaround till the fix is released. If there was another bug free device available to me I would have switched to that, but there isnt on my carrier so I still use it as I personally have no other option on T-Mo US. This whole saga could have gone better and will obviously be a factor in any future decision about purchasing a Dell smartphone but for now I feel satisfied with the choice I made, all things considered.
I think I am willing to be a bit more forgiving, given that I used to be a Software Developer. I understand the qualms of getting bugs fixed ASAP, but the SDLC doesn't allow it all the time. I am also willing to cut Dell some slack because the guys in the Mobility team have been awesome. Sure, customer service at Dell, as a whole, sucks monkey balls, but once they have you transferred to the right team, they're quite helpful. I think a huge issue for a lot of people is that they don't like talking to people from India, and then that's where all the bashing starts. I guess it depends on your tolerance level?!
If it is a concession, I spoke to someone in the Mobility team yesterday evening and they confirmed that these issues (camera, bluetooth, WiFi, etc.) are known and have been escalated. She did not know about how soon the update would roll out.
I think if they continue to communicate with us early adopters and roll out a software update to address some of these core issues, they'll at least have one happy camper on their side.
I am pretty patient with my devices these days, and with purchasing a first gen device (from a company with little experience in mobile) I am even more forgiving. Worst case scenario, I sell the phone and buy something else, lesson learned. From my experience with Dell (currently and past) they get fixes out, it just takes some time.
I won't be making any of those decisions on this phone until we see the issues with memory and camera fixed (WiFi is much less of an issue for me because I'm in a "4G" zone.) For now, I love the form factor, and I get more questions and "wow's" than anyone else when they see me pull the thing out with the giant DELL logo on the back (teh sex).
I'm generally happy; I have very few problems. The worst one was Monday the phone locked up while charging overnight so my alarm didn't go off.
I'm much more irritated by Dell's almost total silence on what issues they're aware of, which are being investigated, etc, etc. Heck, the twitter feed is the only confirmation we have that they even consider the RAM reports from the WP7 API an issue to investigate!
Still, the device is very responsive and performs very well as I suck its battery dry on Xbox Live, so I'll hang on to it and wait patiently for updates.
Thanks for pestering Dell for us!

I disable 3G in the Cellular settings, but I have had 1 crash with that turned off so it may not be a consistent fix.
That just made my week. Hopefully it comes soon.
efjay, I've been trying your workaround and I think it's working. Thank you!

Good to hear, don't know why it doesn't work for me anymore but hopefully Dell's fix won't be long.

Kudos for WMPoweruser calling out Dell

http://wmpoweruser.com/editorial-microsoft-intervene-with-dell-now/
I can't thank them enough for not letting Dell off the hook. You know damn well that Dell is just trying to wait this thing out until it would be an outdated device anyhow and most of us just move on without them having to repair all these units.
As far as Dell wanting to refund some of us 50% of what we are paying (100% if you ask them, but it is 50% if you do the math) they should also have to buy us out of our mobile contracts, for those that signed a brand new contract in order to get this phone. I completely changed carriers to T-Mobile to get this device. Without the device I would have gone somewhere else. In the end, I feel these dead-beats (Dell board members in latin terms) owe me close to $1000 for this entire mess, in order to put me back in the same exact situation I was in before I got suckered into buying one of these lemons.
I second that and lets wait for a response from Dell. Can you also tip wpcenteral and engadget on the same.

I have tipped engadget and gizmodo about 4 times each on this issue and that both don't seem to care.
I agree, this is a good idea...

I think wmpoweruser is the only blog that will take this up, that's more their style to be confrontational. I tipped wpcentral but they seem too close to MS sources and wont want to rock the boat so they probably wont carry this. engadget and gizmodo's lack of response is not surprising since they are both pro-apple sites.

Which is exactly why I thought they would jump all over this and use this to report why Microsoft's business structure of relying on third parties to produce your hardware leaves you at their mercy.
I sent it off to thisismynext.com, see if they will pick it up for something relating to customer service and business partnerships.
I doubt anyone other than WMPoweruser will report it. The simple reason is that WMPU doesn't get any demo units/juicy stuff from Companies/MFG'rs. All the rest have a big parent company who has close relation with big companies and don't want to disturb the news supply chain. They don't have the balls to even speak-up unless its a widespread issue where they get to cover-up their ass.

Looks like Dell has responded (or responded by its absence at the MS media party today)... they are stepping away from the consumer business.

I would not go that far. From personal experience with MS and Dell , future mango testing cannot be done until the final firmware fix is in. The primary concern, so I'm told, is the reporting of memory. Without the final fix in place, they cannot test mango. My guess is that Dell has not provided a date yet. I know mango runs well on the VP with the test build of the firmware. It runs real well. I can't wait. If you look at the MS update about Dell, the book is not closed.
Update: Dell is not off the list of WP7 hardware manufacturers. Microsoft told us that the Round Rock gang simply isn't one of the "partners ready to go" do the Mango tango right now
I'm not looking for anything beyond mango, but seeing as how the at&t version just came out it would be really disheartening to not get mango.
Really hope you are right. I'm cautiously optimistic .

Its taking this long to get a fix in place for existing phones, if they cant get it done I wont hold out hope for Mango if I were you. You are much better off just selling the phone then (if you can) and getting one from an OEM who has more experience making smartphones. For me if the DVP gets Mango is irrelevant as I will be importing the first Nokia WP7 handset I can, my only concern is using a crash-prone handset for 6 more months, not sure my sanity would be preserved after that much mental torture!

...and this is it in a nutshell. All future updates are surely at risk, without the firmware update. though I personally think it will come, its easy for me to say because I'm one of the lucky ones with few problems with the phone. Until the update is out and working.....Mango is off the table for everyone because it does not offer the firmware fix...only Dell can do that
While a hand full of you have working devices; I have had 5 and all have been complete garbage. None of them can run day one WinMo7 OS for more than 10 minutes tops, without being a complete disaster. In all honesty, I can't see any of the 5 I have had running Mango without going into cardiac arrest.
