Does Tmobile (US) HD2 work in China?

Hi, all,
I travel between China and US often. I am thinking about buying TMO(US) HD2, since it is a lot cheaper than anywhere else I have seen. Also, It comes with other goodies and full warranty. My concern is that will the phone work in China under 3G? I know there is iPhone in China (China Unicom). I think it operates on AT&T 3G (WCDMA). China Mobile uses TD-SCDMA. 3G on that is out of the question. If I don't get 3G, I guess EDGE is ok, I don't even think I get that speed on China Mobile. Don't really want to put close to $500 for an experiment.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated...

The USA T Mobile radio uses quad band (850/900/1800/1900) for the GSM freq. The 3G freq is 1700/2100.
China GSM uses 900/1800 for GSM and 3G. So, you will get EDGE speed but not 3G.
On a different note, you would be able to get 3G in Korea and Japan because they use 2100. You have to make sure that Auto is selected for you Network Type and Band Freq on the Band page for that to happen.

I'm thinking about getting an HD2 to use here in Japan.
It feels like a gamble. I have a SoftBank X01T and I've been using custom English roms. (I know the AP and password) (The Sim is with SoftBank).
I'm hoping it's possible to just get an HD2, pop the sim card in - set the AP and password as usual and it should be ok?
Any thoughts please.
Plus anything to backup the 3G working in Japan.

[Q] Bell Samsung Galaxy S in Europe

Hi everybody.
I'm currently in Canada, but I'm from Europe. I noticed Bell is offering Samsung Galaxy S for only 500 CAD without contract (thats 380 euros) which is not much, and I'm really tempted to buy it. The trouble is Bell is CDMA carrier, and europe is GSM. Bells site claims that Galaxy S is "Global Phone" which should mean that it supports european GSM frequences (I Guess). Does anybody know anything about this ? Would this phone work ok in Europe? Would I be able to use GPRS/EDGE/UMTS data connections in Europe?

I was surprised at first but the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell is actually a GSM phone!
I'm reading straight from the box:
EDGE / GPRS / GSM Quad band AND HSPA Tri band (850/1900/2100).
So it rocks in Canada and Europe! On 3G and 2G!
I got mine from Best Buy for $560 (including taxes, still a good deal compared to Europe I think).
And now using a Fido monthly plan without contract ^^

I recon you would get the best answer by asking a sales person in the store.
maybe even get it in writing incase it turns out to be bull****, so you can get a refund by shipping it back or something

3G runs on 850/1900/2100
you might only get the 1900 if you live in Europe
so it will be mostly 2G unless you are in good ares with 1900 signal to get 3G

If your really tricky, you will discover that the bell i9000m is actually a QUAD band gsm/wcdma phone.
850/900/1900/2100 WCDMA, and 850/900/1800/1900 GSM
The extra frequencies have to be enabled in the service menu though. (does not require root)

[Q] Samsung Spica or HTC Magic/Hero?

Hi. So I finally decided to purchase my first Android OS based phone. At the moment, the two phones available to me and in my price range (used, $200 and under,) are the Samsung I5700 Galaxy Spica and HTC Magic (plus a Hero I found for very cheap.)
Custom ROMs aren't too important to me, the stock apps (browser, calender, SMS,) built into Android easily meet my needs, but the Spica's spec sheet is very nice. Obviously the Magic/Hero is fairly dated now, so it doesn't really match up. But the Spica's 3G radio is not compatible with Canadian providers. I need a phone that I can switch from network to network here in Canada. Two to 3 years plans are out of my means currently, plus I don't really like contracts.
I guess what I'm really asking for is: is the Spica worth potentially paying more money for - is its support for Divx, its form factor, its display and its beefier CPU worth an extra $5 a month? Or should I just settle for a Magic/Hero?
EDIT: According to GSM Arena there's a NA version that supports, HSDPA 850 / 1900. Can I verify what bands the Spica supports by checking a menu in Android?

I have a non-NA Spica in Canada. The only networks it doesn't work for are Windmobile and Mobilicity because they use 1700MHz.

Right. And the other UTMS networks available all operate on 850/1900. So if you're using the non-NA version, which has HSDPA 900/2100, you wouldn't be able to use any 3G network in Canada? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just learning this stuff at the moment.
Personally, I'm going to go with either Koodo or Solo, because at the moment, because of where I'm at, they have the best available prepaid plan.

There are 2 versions of the Spica and 3 of the Magic -
Magic: Rogers, T-Mobile USA (myTouch 3G), international
Spica: Rogers, international
As it would suggest, the Rogers versions of each of these phones works on the Rogers 3G network, as well as that of Telus, Bell and now Sasktel, as well as all of their subsidiaries, such as Solo, Koodo, Virgin, Fido, etc.
The T-Mobile USA myTouch will work with Wind Mobile, Videotron and Moblicity, providing you're in one of their coverage areas. Otherwise it will work with Rogers (and Fido) on their 2G network.
The international (anywhere but North America) versions of these phones won't work on any 3G network in Canada, so you can use only Rogers (and Fido) on 2G.
Similarly, there are 3 versions of the Hero, a Telus one that will work with Rogers, Telus and Bell; an international one that will work with Rogers on 2G and a Sprint one (that looks cooler too) that will only work with Sprint in the US, and doesn't take a SIM card.

I want to get a Nexus S for myself, the unlocked without contract one, because I would like to use it in my home country (Malaysia).
So I would like to confirm one thing before I proceed:
I saw this from BestBuy forum FAQs:
Will an unlocked Nexus S work with carriers other than T-Mobile?
Yes, but it won’t run on 3G with all carriers. Speed and power will be reduced on non-3G networks.
Is that means that even though Nexus S did support the 3G band of my home country, it won't run on the 3G network?! Means that I can't use the 3G in my home country?

Anyone have answer for this? Anyone tried buy N1 and got the 3G working in country outside US?

Wont' work. Malaysia uses 2100mhz band for 3G.
The Nexus S on T-Mobile uses BOTH 1700/2100mhz AT THE SAME TIME for 3G.

It will work fine since the 3G band in Malaysia is 2100MHz and the Nexus S supports those bands.
I had the Nexus One (T-Mobile Version) in Thailand and it worked perfectly fine on 2100MHz 3G. My N900 worked as well.
Don't listen to nxt or slowz3r they have no idea of what they are talking about.

You wont have a problem with most 3g phones in Malaysia - most of the rest of the world uses standard frequencies and the nexus s and nexus 1 work just fine.
If a phone works in Europe then it'll be fine in malaysia, and indeed most of the rest of the world.
Most of the noise on here is from people in the US where there are some weird frequencies being used... you can only use 3g on T-Mobile there -at+t uses different frequencies, and sprint and Verizon use a completely different technology.

GSM // (Global System for Mobile Communications) Also known as 2G, EDGE.
EDGE // EDGE is the new name for GSM 384. The technology was named GSM 384 because of the fact that it provided Data Transmission at a rate of 384 Kbps.
2G // Also known as GSM. Short for second-generation wireless telephone technology. Second generation 2G cellular telecom networks were commercially launched on the GSM standard in Finland by Radiolinja (now part of Elisa Oyj) in 1991.
3G // Short for third Generation, is a term used to represent the 3rd generation of mobile telecommunications technology. Also called Tri-Band 3G.

NETWORK BANDS & FACTS
T-Mobile offers GSM service in both the 850MHz and 1900MHz frequency bands.
T-Mobile utilizes the 1700MHz, 2100MHz, and 1900MHz frequency band for their 3G data network.
T-Mobile utilizes the 1900MHz frequency band for their entire network. (EDGE, GPRS, VOICE, TXT)
Europe and most of the world use the 900MHz and 1800MHz frequency bands for GSM. For a device to use T-Mobile USA and work in Europe, it would need to support the 1900MHz band and one or both of the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands used in Europe.

Yes, also the ATT SGH-i717 Note1 works as well. same radios can be flashed as well. So will sim unlock both phones work on T-mo. Some, like me, have better luck with T-mo radios that can be flashed.

HTC A9191 Ace, Euro bands (GSM quad band & 3G 900/2100mhz) - I can confirm voice and data work, but no 3G coverage in my area - I'm in a rural part of northern Indiana. Other's experience may vary.

What's the secret then? Cause, I have a factory unlocked Att Note i717 that just refuses to fully function on Tmobile. (User error clearly).
I just gave up and bought the Tmobile Note2.. Do tell?

I think it needs to use the fast.tmobile.com APN. Check with Howard Forums user milan03. He seems to know his stuff.

Found this thread and wanted to add that I have an unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY R800at that I am using on Tmo in Davis County UT (North of SLC) and I get hspa+ on it. Generally consistent speeds of:
5-7mbps down
1-3 mbp up

I will go for 1 month in USA during holidays and I would know if my (European) HTC One X+ (witch is unlocked) will works on T-Mobile 3G network...
The HTC One X+ is announced as compatible with these bands : HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
And accordind to the first post of this thread, T-Mobile 3G network is using these bands : 3G/HSPA: 850/1700/1900/2100 MHz
It seems that my HTC One X+ is not compatible with the 1700 MHz band... so do you think that my HTC One X+ couldn't be connected to T-Mobile 3G network... or maybe the compatibility with the others T-Mobile 3G bands are enough?
