Hi, all,
I travel between China and US often. I am thinking about buying TMO(US) HD2, since it is a lot cheaper than anywhere else I have seen. Also, It comes with other goodies and full warranty. My concern is that will the phone work in China under 3G? I know there is iPhone in China (China Unicom). I think it operates on AT&T 3G (WCDMA). China Mobile uses TD-SCDMA. 3G on that is out of the question. If I don't get 3G, I guess EDGE is ok, I don't even think I get that speed on China Mobile. Don't really want to put close to $500 for an experiment.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated...
Perry
The USA T Mobile radio uses quad band (850/900/1800/1900) for the GSM freq. The 3G freq is 1700/2100.
China GSM uses 900/1800 for GSM and 3G. So, you will get EDGE speed but not 3G.
On a different note, you would be able to get 3G in Korea and Japan because they use 2100. You have to make sure that Auto is selected for you Network Type and Band Freq on the Band page for that to happen.
I'm thinking about getting an HD2 to use here in Japan.
It feels like a gamble. I have a SoftBank X01T and I've been using custom English roms. (I know the AP and password) (The Sim is with SoftBank).
I'm hoping it's possible to just get an HD2, pop the sim card in - set the AP and password as usual and it should be ok?
Any thoughts please.
Plus anything to backup the 3G working in Japan.
Thanks if you can advise.

Hello if someone could help me with my 3G connection inquiry, I would greatly appreciate it.
I bought this phone unlocked from Hong Kong and brought it back to Canada. But the 3G connection through Rogers won't work. I am able to connect to edge (When i pop in my sisters sim card which has a data plan, as my sim card currently does not have a data plan).
I talked to Rogers and they said that everything is compatable (After mentioning the phone frequencies and speed capabilities) and that the only reason 3G isnt working is that I have not configured my phone properly for 3G and at this moment it is configured for 2G (Edge).
I then contacted HTC and they said the reason was because "for the Rogers network, their 3G signal is operated on the 850/1900 MHZ band and the Touch HD2 operates on the 900/2100 MHZ band." Could this be the reason? Will i never taste the pleasures of a 3G connection?
PLEASE HELP!!
since you have bought it in hongkong most probably you have the asian version. It comes with 900/2100 MHZ bands and as you mentioned ROger needs 850/1900 frequency.
You could also get Telstra version from Australia and unlock it as it has 850/1900 frquency so that you could get 3g. But not possible on the one you already have.
Yea its the frequencies. When I take my phones abroad, I always check what frequencies the country has. If the frequencies don't match, the phone won't work in terms of placing calls, 3G etc.
is there a way to unlock ?

There is no software that can get around this "problem"
It is purely a hardware limitation.
perhaps with flashing radio but i'm not shure

Nope, it still will not support the correct bands that he needs
This is a completely hardware related problem
simple solution....
simple solution...sell it or trade it fot the right one
Hi,
Will this phone work in Europe?
It says: HSPA/WDCMA: 900/2100 mHz
But i am also worried about the virgin branding, how hard is it to debrand and flash an Android phone, i only have PocketPC &Windows mobile experience.
If i "root" the phone ( that's what Android flashing is called, no?) will i be able to use any sim card on it, and will it work in Europe?
PS: Is android 2.2 available for legend or do i need a custom hacked rom?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I've heard people having success using the Virgin/Bell Legend in the US, on AT&T, So I'm thinking if the country you're going to has GSM, you'll be OK (not sure though).
You can unlock the phone for use on any carrier though, it's a totally different thing. http://www.htccode.com gets you an unlock code so you can use any SIM. (20 bucks isn't bad.)
However, we have yet to root our version of the Legend. Check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700898
There are versions of 2.2 out there for the legend, but we cannot flash them to our devices, as we have the ROM version 2.03.xxx.
Hope I could help!

Do you have an idea on wich band gsm network in Canada works?
A girlfriend comes over there for holliday and wonders if her mobile will work.
It's a dual band 850/1900.
The version Virgin/Bell sells in Canada has only 850/1900MHz HSPA support. That will not work (3G) in Europe. EDGE will still be available though.
As for branding, there really isn't any, physically or in software. There are a couple apps that are preloaded (a music app and a media app I believe) and that's it.

Network
HSPA/WCDMA: • North America: 850/1900 MHz• Upload speed of up to 2 Mbps and download speed of up to 7.2 Mbps Peak Rate
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900MHz (Band frequency, HSPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.)
This has to work.
Ok great, so i will probably get this one.
Hi All
I have recently moved to Canada with my UK HTC HD2.
Since moving here I have changed my phone provider to Fido (Rogers Network). Internet seems extremely slow compared to my UK provider.
Someone told me that because I have a UK phone it is not using the correct bands for HSPA and that's why my internet access is so slow. Internet access is extremely fast on Wi-Fi so I know it's not a problem with the ROM etc.
Can anyone give me any ideas if this sounds correct - do I need to sell my UK HTC HD2 and purchase an American one to get over this problem?
Thanks
I think your friend is correct.
Rogers uses 850Mhz and 1900 Mhz, while in the
United Kingdom the bands used are 800Mhz and 1800Mhz (and some 2100Mhz),
Your UK HD2 is of European configuration, and should be able to cope with the Rogers frequencies. (See)
Your phone uses 900 - 2100 for 3G
Rogers provides it at 850 - 1900 , therefore your phone will slow down to GPRS speeds.
Have you tried flashing a new radio ROM?
If so, perhaps you should try another one.
At least in theory you could keep your phone and have mobile broadband.
What your friend is telling is true for dual band phones, however the HD2 is quad band..... Perhaps contact your provider (sometimes the dataplan has not been correctly activated, therefore access to mobile broadband is denied, and you will revert to the low GSM data band)
Otherwise contact HTC.
PS: Sorry for my ****-up
the t8585 (regular hd2) uses 900 and 2100 for 3g.
source
thats why canadian users with cash to splash go for the australian telstra model which uses 850/2100
You will only get GPRS and edge speeds, and no, the american wont get 3g either.
Yep....
I's official, I am cross-eyed, got the correct info, but wrong interpretation.
I stand corrected.
Thanks to both of you for the response .... I'm a little confused though!
So if I bought a T-Mobile USA model - that wouldn't give me 3G on the Rogers network I'm on? I have to buy an Australian Telstra model to get 3G?
Thanks!
*EDIT* ... Oh I think I get it now... I don't need to have the 850 and 1900 bands to use 3G on the Rogers network so long as I have one or the other - correct me if I am wrong please?
yea thats it, and the US hd2 has 1700/2100 which is why that one doesnt get 3g on rogers.
I get ya! Thanks for that.... so is Canada the only country that uses 1900? I'm asking because I now know that I can buy an Australian phone to suit the 850 but is there another country's phone apart from Canada that will use the 1900 band?
also I noticed something in my phone settings....there's an option to change my base band so I have selected 850/1900 GSM but it doesn't seem to have made a great deal of difference even after a reset
that's gsm, (calls, gprs and edge) nothing to do with the umts bands.
put umts bands into google, theres a Wikipedia page tells you what countries and networks use what bands.
Ok so I have to admit that in the middle of my excitement, I overlooked this and bought an HTC Legend International version from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0035ER8OO/ref=oss_product)
Where I live, we get 3G 850Mhz (similar to AT&T), but this phone being international and all only supports 3G on 900/2100 Mhz. I do get GSM 850 with super-slow Edge connection, but no 3G, which is like having a hot woman and not being able to "do" her.
My question is, can the radio on this phone be flashed to converto to 3G 850 (NAM Version) or is it my only option to sell this phone immediately?

You may only get faster GPRS/Edge speed by playing with some build.prop settings but that's about it AFAIK
Thanks for the reply, I just put it up for sale on my facebook and local market with the excuse that I bought it for my wife and she thinks is too complex and prefers Blackberry. hopefully someone will buy it and I can order me a new phone with the right 3G band support .
I want to get a Nexus S for myself, the unlocked without contract one, because I would like to use it in my home country (Malaysia).
So I would like to confirm one thing before I proceed:
I saw this from BestBuy forum FAQs:
Will an unlocked Nexus S work with carriers other than T-Mobile?
Yes, but it won’t run on 3G with all carriers. Speed and power will be reduced on non-3G networks.
Is that means that even though Nexus S did support the 3G band of my home country, it won't run on the 3G network?! Means that I can't use the 3G in my home country?
Anyone have answer for this? Anyone tried buy N1 and got the 3G working in country outside US?
gotta be 1700/2100 MHz i believe
Wont' work. Malaysia uses 2100mhz band for 3G.
The Nexus S on T-Mobile uses BOTH 1700/2100mhz AT THE SAME TIME for 3G.
It will work fine since the 3G band in Malaysia is 2100MHz and the Nexus S supports those bands.
I had the Nexus One (T-Mobile Version) in Thailand and it worked perfectly fine on 2100MHz 3G. My N900 worked as well.
Don't listen to nxt or slowz3r they have no idea of what they are talking about.

You wont have a problem with most 3g phones in Malaysia - most of the rest of the world uses standard frequencies and the nexus s and nexus 1 work just fine.
If a phone works in Europe then it'll be fine in malaysia, and indeed most of the rest of the world.
Most of the noise on here is from people in the US where there are some weird frequencies being used... you can only use 3g on T-Mobile there -at+t uses different frequencies, and sprint and Verizon use a completely different technology.
Thank you for all the useful replies!
