will athena work on u.s. t mobile 3g network?

anybody in new york or been to new york with your athena to see if it works with the new upcomming t mobile 3g network? they say its running on 1700 freq.

anybody have luck or an answer for this one?

that would be a no then, 2100Mhz is what the athena is capable of AFAIK

I have used the Athena on both T-Mobile and AT&T Networks in the US without issues.

I also have had no problems with T-mo in my area (central NJ) using 3g. I'm using an x7501...TJ

that seems odd, Current roms do not have the T-Mobile US band included, nor is the current radio capable of running the t-mobile 1700 band in the USA. ATT band is 3g/UTMS 850/1900 and Europe is 3g/UTMS 800/2100
T-Mobile Edge would work fine though

Hi, sometimes the 3g pop's up on my x7501 its not all the time but next time it does I will take a screen shot of it. Maybe its an error I have no idea...TJ

So is it possible to get T-mo 3g on athena?
T-mo finally rooled out 3g in my area, I thought my athena was 3g capable and could fly through the internet and never deal with slate Flinstone tablets and EDGE again! Sadly we do?
Their 3g is rolled out on 1700/2100 band only, so to exit the EDGE stone age, we must buy the G1 (not even close to x7501) or ask a crazy question to those in the know. Is the frequency band offered on a phone limited and fixed by the ROM / hardware, or is it software driven where a patch / upgrade could expand it's operantional band to include 1700/2100 UMTS alongside the voice 850/1900 band?

I can connect easily to TMobile. I get the "E" sign showing on the antennae.

It is hardware driven. Unfortunately this is why I'm going to switch over to AT & T because of the downgrade to get 3g service from a phone that NO OTHER Networks in the world uses is pointless IMHO. I don't know what T Mo was drinking or smoking, and when I asked the level 1 techs they said no future talks or expectations of using the NORMAL 1900/2100 Frequency like other 3g networks. Sux if you ask me.

I got similar responses from the techs at T-mo except I also got a moment of false hope when one incorrectly told me that their 3g is on 1900, I went nuts trying, then called back & someone else told me that it was in fact on 1700/2100. As I've been reading, their reason (though a huge pain in the ass for us) was to separate voice and data so one wouldn't steal bandwith from the other. Makes sense, though it would be easier to deal with if I had some REAL options other than G1 and crappy kids phones.
Since T-Mo has the best price for some pretty decent service (except EDGE that is), I've heard of some T-Mo users getting just an AT&T data plan alongside T-Mo voice, I'm not sure how it's done, do you need 1/2 simms, or what. If you find yourself doing this, I would like to hear your feedback.
Otherwise, I'll keep my fingers crossed that HTC will use some common sense, and use 1700/2100 in future US versions.

HTC HD2 3G Not Detected!!!!!

Hello if someone could help me with my 3G connection inquiry, I would greatly appreciate it.
I bought this phone unlocked from Hong Kong and brought it back to Canada. But the 3G connection through Rogers won't work. I am able to connect to edge (When i pop in my sisters sim card which has a data plan, as my sim card currently does not have a data plan).
I talked to Rogers and they said that everything is compatable (After mentioning the phone frequencies and speed capabilities) and that the only reason 3G isnt working is that I have not configured my phone properly for 3G and at this moment it is configured for 2G (Edge).
I then contacted HTC and they said the reason was because "for the Rogers network, their 3G signal is operated on the 850/1900 MHZ band and the Touch HD2 operates on the 900/2100 MHZ band." Could this be the reason? Will i never taste the pleasures of a 3G connection?
PLEASE HELP!!

since you have bought it in hongkong most probably you have the asian version. It comes with 900/2100 MHZ bands and as you mentioned ROger needs 850/1900 frequency.
You could also get Telstra version from Australia and unlock it as it has 850/1900 frquency so that you could get 3g. But not possible on the one you already have.

Yea its the frequencies. When I take my phones abroad, I always check what frequencies the country has. If the frequencies don't match, the phone won't work in terms of placing calls, 3G etc.

is there a way to unlock ?

There is no software that can get around this "problem"
It is purely a hardware limitation.

3G Networks hardware LOCKING to each carrier by HTC

Among those of you with a deap knowledge of the inner working of HTC phone for 3G networks.
Is HTC doing something to phones for each carrier to lock the phone to a specific carriers 3G network and no other.
I'm asking because I was talking with a freind of mine who was given a HD2 as a part of a promotion for use on AT&T 3G network (850/2100). He uses T-Mobile and tried to get it to work with his T-Mobile SIM with no success. He also told me he had a conversation with someone from HTC that told him that he would no beable to get his HD2 to work on T-Mobile because the hardware will not work with T-Mobiles 3G network (1700/2100).
If this is the case does anyone know if it changable, is it a Firmware issue that can be changed or is it like hard wired physically?
Then the question is if we are buying these phone, some through contracts others outright, do we want to told whos service we have to use!!

3g is radio/hardware dependent. he'll unfortunately be stuck on EDGE.

He will have no issues using the phone with T-mobile usa. He will not get 3G because of the bands. He will just have edge. But calls, mms, text, email, and internet will all function properly.

I bought my HTC HD2 in USA (unlocked) and here in Peru, where I live, I cannot get it to work with 3G. If I lived in USA, is there a way to know with what carrier I would get 3G ?

So you are on Claro in Peru?
For 3G you need a phone with 3G 1900 support. If it is the T-Mobile version, that would have 3G on 1700/2100 bands which would be no good. If you got an AT&T handset (850/1900) it would work for 3G for you.
You need to understand what 3G support your version of the phone has. For example mine (Telstra Australia) is 850/2100 - which would not be able to pick up 3G in your network - however it works excellent with Telstra (850) in Australia and currently working well with StarHub (2100) in Singapore.
Your phone is quad band - but that is GSM quadband not 3G - it is 3G dual band and that is what is important for your connection.

Thanks for your response. Yeah, today I did my homework and found that my HD2 has UMTS (HSDPA) 900 - 2100 bands, a fact that is not good because Claro and Movistar in Peru operated the 850 - 1900 bands for 3G.
Question: is there a HD2 version with 850 - 1900 band ????

No, but the Telstra HD2 will pick up the 850MHz signals where they exist. There is no HD2 with the 1900MHz UMTS band at the moment

Would you mind pointing me in the direction of those BILLIONS of threads.
I've done searchs on hardware dependents, radio/hardware dependents, 3G radio.
There are so many way that is topic could be listed.
I'm finding nothing but my thread now just as before.

Erm, so AT&T gives a phone, for promotion of their service, and at the same time they should allow you to use another network? You've got too much hope there...

Should a UK HD2 act different on a Canadian Network?

Hi All
I have recently moved to Canada with my UK HTC HD2.
Since moving here I have changed my phone provider to Fido (Rogers Network). Internet seems extremely slow compared to my UK provider.
Someone told me that because I have a UK phone it is not using the correct bands for HSPA and that's why my internet access is so slow. Internet access is extremely fast on Wi-Fi so I know it's not a problem with the ROM etc.
Can anyone give me any ideas if this sounds correct - do I need to sell my UK HTC HD2 and purchase an American one to get over this problem?

I think your friend is correct.
Rogers uses 850Mhz and 1900 Mhz, while in the
United Kingdom the bands used are 800Mhz and 1800Mhz (and some 2100Mhz),
Your UK HD2 is of European configuration, and should be able to cope with the Rogers frequencies. (See)
Your phone uses 900 - 2100 for 3G
Rogers provides it at 850 - 1900 , therefore your phone will slow down to GPRS speeds.
Have you tried flashing a new radio ROM?
If so, perhaps you should try another one.
At least in theory you could keep your phone and have mobile broadband.
What your friend is telling is true for dual band phones, however the HD2 is quad band..... Perhaps contact your provider (sometimes the dataplan has not been correctly activated, therefore access to mobile broadband is denied, and you will revert to the low GSM data band)
Otherwise contact HTC.

the t8585 (regular hd2) uses 900 and 2100 for 3g.

yea thats it, and the US hd2 has 1700/2100 which is why that one doesnt get 3g on rogers.

also I noticed something in my phone settings....there's an option to change my base band so I have selected 850/1900 GSM but it doesn't seem to have made a great deal of difference even after a reset

that's gsm, (calls, gprs and edge) nothing to do with the umts bands.
put umts bands into google, theres a Wikipedia page tells you what countries and networks use what bands.

[Q] Bell Samsung Galaxy S in Europe

Hi everybody.
I'm currently in Canada, but I'm from Europe. I noticed Bell is offering Samsung Galaxy S for only 500 CAD without contract (thats 380 euros) which is not much, and I'm really tempted to buy it. The trouble is Bell is CDMA carrier, and europe is GSM. Bells site claims that Galaxy S is "Global Phone" which should mean that it supports european GSM frequences (I Guess). Does anybody know anything about this ? Would this phone work ok in Europe? Would I be able to use GPRS/EDGE/UMTS data connections in Europe?

I was surprised at first but the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell is actually a GSM phone!
I'm reading straight from the box:
EDGE / GPRS / GSM Quad band AND HSPA Tri band (850/1900/2100).
So it rocks in Canada and Europe! On 3G and 2G!
I got mine from Best Buy for $560 (including taxes, still a good deal compared to Europe I think).
And now using a Fido monthly plan without contract ^^

maybe even get it in writing incase it turns out to be bull****, so you can get a refund by shipping it back or something

3G runs on 850/1900/2100
you might only get the 1900 if you live in Europe
so it will be mostly 2G unless you are in good ares with 1900 signal to get 3G

If your really tricky, you will discover that the bell i9000m is actually a QUAD band gsm/wcdma phone.
850/900/1900/2100 WCDMA, and 850/900/1800/1900 GSM
The extra frequencies have to be enabled in the service menu though. (does not require root)
